WINTERS

Barry Jonathon Winters

Barry Jonathon Winters, a former Woodland resident, died Nov. 3, 2003, in Boston. He was 23.

Born Oct. 28, 1980, to George and Paula Winters in Quartz Hill, he was raised in Southern California, then moved to Woodland in September 2003. In 1998, he graduated from Paraclete High School in Palmdale. He later served in the Peace Corps, and often participated in political campaigning for the Green Party.

He was passionate about the environment and loved children. He built computers for inner-city schools, he trained children to use computers and the Internet and he donated much of his inheritance to charities, like the World Wildlife Fund and the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade.

Described as a devoted brother and uncle, compassionate and dedicated friend and intelligent, humorous man, Winters "was a courageous, beautiful spirit finally set free from his earthly pain" by taking his own life in the city he loved, a friend said. His loved ones hope he has finally found his peace, the friend added.

He is survived by his sister Janette Winters-Hubbard of Pomona and intimate friend Holly Bishop of Davis.

In keeping with the wishes of the deceased, no services will be held.

WINTERS

Beverly I. Winters

Beverly I. Winters died at her home in Woodland Monday, June 27, 2005 at age 80.

Mrs. Winters was born Jan. 28, 1925 in Redding. She had been a Yolo County resident for 46 years. She attended Chico State. For 20 years, she was employed with Wesco Trailer Manufacturing. She volunteered for the literacy program as a tutor and at the Woodland Senior Center with the Meals on Wheels program, help start the Tele-Care program and with the Tax-Aide program serving seniors and low-income residents. In addition, she was a past president of the Soroptimist Club.

Survivors include Mrs. Winters' daughter, Kathy Martin and her husband Sam of Robbins; her son, Ad Jordan and his wife Kimberly of Woodland; and her grandchildren, Chris Martin and his wife Shane, Sam Martin and his wife Andrea all of Woodland, Cherie Martin of Folsom, Stephanie Jordan of Chico and Michelle Jordan of Reno, Nev.

The family requests memorials in Mrs. Winters' name be directed to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, 95617 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Services: Respecting the wishes of Mrs. Winters, private services were held. The Neptune Society assisted the family with arrangements.

WINTERS

Thelma G. Winters

Thelma G. Winters died in Woodland Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005 at age 94.

Mrs. Winters was born Aug. 11, 1910 in Fresno. She was a 1928 graduate of Davis High School and was retired from UC Davis Library. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, a member of the Yolo Thursday Club, Davis Library Club, Woodland Senior Center Handicrafters and Community Care Car.

Survivors include Mrs. Winters' daughter, Patricia Kappeler and her husband Gerald of Woodland; her son, Donald E. Winters of Woodland; her grandchildren, Robin Mullin and her husband Steven of Alameda, Jennifer Gastineau and her husband Randy of Woodland, Dierdre Vannucci of Lodi, Denise Warner of Winters, Scott Winters of Plain City, Utah and Heidi Shields and her husband Wade of San Diego and her great-grandchildren, Courtney, Heather and Sydney Gastineau of Woodland, Sean, Erin, Kate and Michaela Mullin of Alameda, Jacob and Kelsey Warner of Winters and Tanner and Emilee Shields of San Diego. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gertrude (Lillard) and Oliver Tufts Hoag.

The family requests memorials in Mrs. Winters' name be directed to Woodland Senior Center, 630 Lincoln Ave., Woodland 95695 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

WION

Mary B. Wion

Mary Bourland Wion died Nov. 10, 2001, in Woodland. Born on March 16, 1922, in Cottonwood, she was 79 years old. She lived in Winters her entire life, except for four years she lived in La Pine, Ore.

For 40 years she ran a fruit and nut ranch and was financial secretary for Pioneer Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school, and was also active in the Winters Parent-Teacher Association. She traveled the country with her second husband, Robert Wion, in a recreational vehicle for about 10 years.

She loved to play bingo, horseshoes and a card game called Pedro. She was also involved in the Rebekahs.

She married her first husband, Clarence, in Carson City, Nev., on Nov. 19, 1941; he died in 1974. She married her second husband in 1979; he died in 1990.

She is survived by her two daughters, Joan Jackson of Atlanta and Jean Carlson of Arbuckle; six stepchildren, Robert Wion, Michael Wion, Carol Souza, Richard Wion, Roberta "Dee Dee" Cutlip and Katherine Allen; her sister, Lena Marsh of Rio Linda; and five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relations.

Friends are invited to a visitation Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Smith's Colonial Chapel, 14 Main St. in Winters. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith's, with a graveside service to follow at noon at the Winters Cemetery.

A fellowship will follow at the Wesley Hall on Russell Street in Winters.

Donations in her memory may be made to Parkinson's disease research.

WION

Funeral services held for Richard Dee Wion

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 10, at Smith's Colonial Chapel for Robert Dee Wion who died on Friday, April 5, 1991 at Woodland Memorial Hospital. Burial followed at the Winters Cemetery.

Mr. Wion was born at Grand Island, Nebraska, on August 23, 1917, and was 73. He was engaged in the building industry most of his life and was later a building inspector for Yolo County for 15 years. He retired in 1980. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He lived in Winters for 40 years and had moved to La Pine, Oregon, just three years ago. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 111 and a member of Rebekah Lodge No. 249, both in Woodland.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Wion of La Pine, Oregon, and eight children: Richard Theodore Wion of San Rafael, Carol Ann Susa of Hewitt, Minnesota, Katherine Juanita Allen of Poplar, Roberta Dee Cutlip of Lumberport, West Virginia, Robert Charles Wion of Winters, Michael Lawrence Wion of Woodland; one brother, David Wion of Cottonwood; and two sisters, Louella Triplett of Harriman, Tennessee and Winnefred Fish of Forest Grove, Oregon. He is also survived by 31 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

The family prefers that any remembrances be memorial contributions in his memory to the Heart Fund.

WIRTH

John Weldon Wirth

John W. Wirth passed away at Woodland Memorial Hospital from complications following a brief illness on Monday, May 2, 2005 at age 67.

John was born Dec. 2, 1937 in Woodland to the late Kincheloe and Frieda (Bremer) Wirth. John was a lifelong resident of Yolo County. John was raised in the rural areas of the Plainfield District in the midst of the family's farming and livestock ranching. He attended Plainfield Elementary School and was a Class of '57 graduate of Woodland High School. Among other activities John was a member of V.L.S., lettering in football. John was a member of a memorable 1955 varsity football team ranked in the top 10 for northern California and later inducted into the Woodland Athletic Hall of Fame. Following high school, John enlisted in the Army and served in the years following the Korean War. Following John's military service and entry into a farm and ranch operation, John married Judy Strack. Although they were unable to finish their lives together, John and Judy set up household and ranching in the Capay Valley, where John established a ranching enterprise and Judy was a school teacher in Esparto.

John was an avid outdoor sportsman and enjoyed countless memorable experiences hunting and fishing with family and his many wonderful friends.

John was preceded in passing by his younger brother Phillip Wirth, his father Kincheloe Wirth and his mother Frieda Bremer Wirth.

Services: In accordance with John's wishes, there will be no burial services. There will be a gathering and celebration of John's life for family and close friends at a soon to be announced date. Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors of Woodland is assisting the family with arrangements.

The family requests remembrance donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

WIRTH

Judy L. Wirth

Judy L. Wirth died in Lake Oswego, Ore. on Jan. 13, 2006 at age 63.

Mrs. Wirth was born on Sept. 17, 1942 in McMinnville, Ore. to the late Edwin L. Strack and Leona L. Strack. She lived most of her life in Yolo County. She was a 1960 graduate of Woodland High School. She was a yell leader and held other student body positions while in high school. She attended UC Davis and graduated in 1964. She was a school teacher in the Esparto School District for many years and later worked as a mortgage broker in Yolo County.

Survivors include Mrs. Wirth's mother, Leona L. Strack of Beaverton, Ore.; her sister, Nancy Tauman and her husband Chuck of Portland, Ore.; and her nieces, Jessica T. Hamilton of Portland, Ore. and Allison Tauman Stupak of New Haven, Conn. She was preceded in death by her husband John W. Wirth.

The family requests that memorials in Mrs. Wirth's name be directed to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Executive Plaza, 11350 McCormick Road, Suite 906, Hunt Valley, Md. 21031.

Services: Mrs. Wirth was interred at Mt. Crest Abbey in Salem, Ore. where her father and grandmother are laid to rest. Autumn Funerals and Cremations of Tigard, Ore. assisted the family with arrangements.
