DEXTER

Genevie Dexter

Genevie Dexter, a longtime resident and respected member of the Winters' community quietly passed away late Thursday evening at Sutter Davis Hospital. She was 92 years old.

Ms. Dexter was born on March 31, 1910 to Elmer and Ivy Dexter in Winters. She was one of three children born to them. She grew up in Winters with her sisters and graduated from Winters High School, in 1928. Following graduation, she went on to UC Berkeley to study Botany; however she ended up receiving a degree in physical education with a minor in health.

Ms. Dexter then moved to Southern California where she took a teaching position at Excelsior High School in the Los Angeles area. For the next 13 years she taught volleyball, rhythm, folk, and modern dance to football players to help them with coordination and rhythm. She even had a drill team. During this time she received her master's degree in health education in 1948, returned home to Winters, and became the consultant on physical education for the State Department of Education.

For the next 25 years, Ms. Dexter traveled the state many times to meet with school officials to aid in setting up physical education programs. She further helped schools develop classes for the physically disabled. She received her doctorate in health education, EdD, from Stanford University.

After her retirement at the age of 65, she became Winters representative on the Yolo County Commission on Aging for the next 10 years. She also volunteered to get the first elderly nutrition program going in Winters, making sure that all who couldn't get out received a hot meal at home. Above all of her accomplishments she was a devote Christian. Her undaunting faith helped her to reach her goal in life, which was to help people.

Mrs. Dexter was a staunch member of the Pioneer Presbyterian Church for many years serving as an Elder and Deacon, as well as, Superintendent of the Sunday School program. In 1984 Ms. Dexter was named Citizen of the Year for her contributions to the community of Winters. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Ms. Dexter is survived by her two sisters, Alice Binns of Sacramento and Gwendolyn (Horace) Shell of Davis. She is further survived by her nephews Richard and wife Rosie Binns of Reedly, Thomas and wife Karen Shell of Lakewood, CO., Charles and wife Emily Binns of Sacramento, and niece Susan and husband Dr. Tom Winston of Wharton, TX.

She is also survived by grand nieces and nephews Tisha and husband John Hankard of Sacramento, William Binns of Sacramento, Christina and husband Jim Gagnon of Fresno, Victoria Binns of Sacramento, Jenny Janice and Steven Winston of Wharton, TX. Kay Binns of Sacramento and five great nieces and nephews further survive her.

Friends are respectively invited to attend a graveside service for Ms. Dexter at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 at the Winters Cemetery, 415 Cemetery Dr., Winters. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 at Smith's Colonial Chapel, 14 Main St., Winters.

BYRNE

Paul Francis Byrne

Paul Francis Byrne died Nov. 7, 2004, at Sierra Health Care after a long illness. He was 86.

Friends are invited to a prayer and rosary service at 6 p.m. today at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. in Davis. A funeral Mass will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at St. James Church, 14th and B Streets. Burial will be at the Davis Cemetery.

Born Aug. 18, 1918, on a farm near Edensburg, Pa., he was one of nine children born to Harvey and Caroline Coons Byrne. He spent his youth in Pennsylvania and graduated from Edensburg High School. In 1939, he joined the U.S. Army Air Forces and was stationed at Wheeler Field in Hawaii.

On Dec. 7, 1941, he survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He was returning from early Sunday morning Mass when the first bomb was dropped on Wheeler Field and he was pursued by fighter planes strafing the planes on the runway. He continued to serve in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

On his return to the States, he was assigned to Travis Air Force Base where he met Private Eileen Cardy in 1944. They were married in 1945 and, following discharge from the service, they moved to Davis. He returned to Travis Air Force Base as a federal civil service employee and was aircraft maintenance supervisor until his retirement in 1973.

He was an active member of the Reliable A’s Model A Ford Club; the Davis Dynamos Walking Club, a chapter of the American Volkssport Association; and was a volunteer at the Davis Senior Center and the Meals on Wheels Program for many years. He and his wife were Seniors of the Year in 1993.

In 1987, he was honored to be chosen by KOVR-TV to be part of a small group taken to Rome, Italy, for a special audience with Pope John Paul II and visits to sacred sites. The trip was filmed and was shown as "Flight of the Faithful" as part of KOVR news.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Merle and Robert Byrne; and by his sister, Lucille (Byrne) Ronan.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eileen; his son, Robert Michael Byrne and his fiancee, Norma Sepulveda of Clearwater, Fla.; his daughter, Cheryl Ann Rudd and her husband David Rudd of Valencia; his grandchildren, Robert Rudd and his wife Aili of Ankeny, Iowa; Karen (Rudd) Lamb and her husband Eugene Lamb of Lakewood, Colo.; Kelly (Byrne) Smith and her husband Curt Smith of San Diego; Amy Lynne Byrne of San Diego; and Sarah (Byrne) Ames-Waitt and her husband Andres Ames-Waitt of San Diego.

He is also survived by his brother, Arthur; his sisters, La Verne, Betty, Mary and Alma, all of Pennsylvania; five great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to all of the staff and caretakers at Sierra Health Care for the compassionate, loving care he received for the past five months.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.

ALEXANDER

Robert Bruce (Bob) Alexander, Sr.

Robert Bruce (Bob) Alexander Sr., a Davis resident since 1968, died Dec. 11, 2004. He was 81.

A celebration of his life will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Howard Johnson Hotel, 4100 Chiles Blvd.

Born March 28, 1923, in Pratt, Kan., he served in the Marine Corps in World War II. In 1947, he moved to the valley with his wife, Alice and son, Robert Jr., and started his long career in the automobile business at Capitol Chevrolet. He had two more children, Gary and Peggy. After 20 years, and many moves, he came back to Davis with his second wife, Barbara, and their two daughters, Ann and Mary. In 1968 he opened Alexander Toyota.

After the sale of the dealership, he was involved in several automotive businesses. His last great venture was Rent-A-Wreck, which he ran until he retired in 2002.

He was involved with volunteer work, such as the American Cancer Society, Yolo County Mental Health, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Cache Creek Lodge. After 39 years of being involved with the Elks Lodge in Woodland, he was made a lifetime member.

His family says he always enjoyed a good game of golf, and managed to keep playing until a month ago, when age and a severe north wind curtailed his final round. He was described as a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Barbara Elizabeth.

He is survived by his children, Robert Alexander Jr. of Davis, Gary Alexander of Hawaii, Peggy Alexander of Sacramento, Ann Finch of Oregon and Mary Gillis of Davis.

He is further survived by 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

ALFORS

John T. Alfors

John T. Alfors of Davis died Dec. 27, 2005, after a lengthy struggle with leukemia. He was 75 years old.

Born Nov. 24, 1930, in Reedley, he grew up in Parlier. He received a Ph.D. in geology from UC Berkeley in 1959. He did extensive studies on Fresno County silicates, and the mineral Alforsite was named to honor him for this work.

He worked as a geologist for the state of California in the Divisions of Mines and Geology and moved to Davis when the state offices moved from San Francisco to Sacramento in 1970.

His hobbies included gardening and camping, and he was awarded many trophies for his exhibition chrysanthemums. He worked as a volunteer propagator at the UC Davis Arboretum and enjoyed folk dancing with the Kaleidoscopes in Sacramento.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Davis; daughter, Barbara of Santa Monica; and son, Mike and his wife Linyu of Sacramento.

At his request, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to send contributions to the UC Davis Arboretum at arboretum.ucdavis.edu.

ALI

Soraya Ali

Soraya Ali died peacefully in her sleep Sept. 8, 2001, at her Chico home. Born April 1, 1979, in Brno, Czechoslovakia, she was 22 years old.

Raised in Davis, Ali graduated from Davis High School in 1998. She had been attending Butte College in Chico for the past 2 1/2 years and was a member of the Kappa Sigma sorority.

Ali is survived by her mother and stepfather, Visse P. and Tyghe Storm of Davis; her father, Ibrahim Ali of Sydney, Australia; her brothers, Sasha and Nikolas Storm of Davis; and her grandparents, Elen Boyarenko and David and Noni Storm of Davis.

She will also be missed by numerous other relatives all over the world, including aunts and uncles Todd and Nancy Storm of Davis; Steven Pahlavan of Thousand Oaks and Timaurie and Derek Holzl of Bellingham, Wash.

Friends are invited to attend a funeral service at 3 p.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church, 200 W. 14th St. in Davis. A private burial will be held at the Davis Cemetery.

Davis Funeral Chapel is assisting with the arrangements.

BABBIN

Lee Babbin

Service Friday for Lee Babbin

Memorial services will be held Friday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. in the Babbin family home at 830 Robin Lane, Sacramento, for Lee McGinnis Babbin, 72, wife of Dr. George Babbin, who died in Sacramento January 30, 1988.

A native of Pennsylvania, she is survived by her husband; daughters, Barbara Candy and Susan Boeger; sons, George W. and John Babbin, and seven grandchildren. She also leaves sisters, Olive Faust of Pennsylvania, Dorothy Claycombe of Arizona and Joanne Mancarelia of Maryland.

Her husband, George Babbin, was the Winters doctor during World War II, when Dr. H. G. Potter was called into the service.

BACHMAN

Denyse Rene Bachman

Denyse Rene Bachman passed away unexpectedly at Stanford University Hospital on Thursday, April 24, 2003, at the age of 34.

She was born in Modesto, Ca. on May 19th, 1968 to John Lackey currently of Fresno, and Alta (Dismore) Philan of Modesto, both of whom survive her.

After graduating from Modesto High School, Denyse married her husband Tab K. Bachman, on April 12, 1987, and began their married life in Woodland, where they have resided since. Denyse had a great joy of life and continued her education, working towards her accounting degree and setting her goal of eventually becoming a CPA. She had been employed with SEDEXO Food Services at University of California, Davis for the last 15 years.

Her hobbies included cooking, computing and scrapbooks. She had an extensive group of friends who shared a love of computer games. Together with her husband, they had spent many days and weeks traveling along the northern coast of California which was an especially favored place of Denyse. Together with her husband Tab, they have been the den parents of Cub Scout Pack 130 of Woodland, which her son William is a member. She is survived by her husband of 16 years, Tab Bachman, her son, William D. Bachman; sisters, Debbie Faria of Modesto and Kim Staffieny of the bay area; and her in-laws, Dennis and Rose Bachman, and Denise Roberts Miller of Woodland.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003, at Woodland Presbyterian Church, 1324 Columbia Drive, Woodland, (located at the intersection of Gibson Road and County Road 98). Pastor Gene Crumley and Pastor Kathy McIntosh-Smith will be officiating. Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the charity of donor's choice.
