Age 64 years. Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Complex on Saturday, September 20, 2003 after a lengthy illness, Gerald Barnes, aged 64 years.
Leaving to mourn his loving wife Mary; sons: Jerry and Kevin; daughter Debbie Morgan (George); four grandchildren: Nichole, Lisa, Bliss and Kaitlind; sisters: Evelyn, Joan and Judy (Vic); brothers: Dave (Ruby), Ross (Betty), and Jim; sisters-in-law: Alma (Len), Lil and Frances; brother-in-law: Bill (Nellie); also a number of nieces, nephews and a large circle of relatives and friends.
Resting at Barrett's Funeral Home, 1081 Topsail Road, Mount Pearl on Sunday from 10am-12noon, 2-4pm and 7-9pm; and on Monday from 10am-12noon. Bruce Bursell Barrett
passed away suddenly at his residence on Sunday, March 16, 2003, Bruce Bursell Barrett (Past Master of Avalon Lodge and member of Mazol Shrine). Aged 56 years. Leaving to mourn with fond memories his loving wife Colette (nee Edstrom); daughter Kym; two sons: Robin and Morgan; brother David Barrett (Elizabeth); sister Elizabeth Tessier; sisters-in-law: Marjorie McPherson and Judy Edstrom (her son Adam Marsh); brothers-in-law: Dr. Harry Edstrom (Grace), and Bob Edstrom; also a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Passed peacefully away at the Escasoni Complex, on May 30th, 2002, after a long illness, Douglas A. Batten. Aged 78 years.
Leaving to mourn his sisters Betty Scott (husband Scottie), their daughter Gloria and granddaughter Kristin; Madge McDonald, Joan Branton and Marg Brocklehurst; brothers Robert (Clara ) and Edward of Toronto; special nephew Allen; as well as a number of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Ralph (Allan) Benson
called home to eternal rest on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 (Allan) Ralph Benson of Mount Pearl, NF formerly of Grates Cove, age 49 years.

Frank Breen
passed away peacefully at the Palliative Care Unit at the Miller Centre on Thursday, January 9, 2003, Frank Breen of 503 Southside Road at the age of 89 years. Predeceased by wife Emma and two sons: Michael and Frank Jr. Leaving to mourn four daughters: Marjorie Derbyshire (Charles), Florida, Catherine Cantello (Sonny), Pennsylvania, Mary Kurilko, Pennsylvania and Martha Breen, Ontario; two sons: Robert (Dot), St. John's and John, British Columbia; one brother Mike, Ontario; ten grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and one special grandson Michael, age 3 1/2, who resided with him. Also leaving behind many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Thank you to all the doctors, VON nurses, Healey's Pharmacy, the DVA and all family and friends who dropped by to see him.

Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Center on Monday, January, 27, 2003, Uriah G. (Roy) Bursey, aged 81 years. Second World War Veteran, Royal Navy (JX216796), and employee of the Provincial Government, Department of Transportation for 34 years. Leaving to mourn his loving wife and best friend of 58 years Irene (Fagner) Bursey; son Melvin (Carolyne), Halifax; daughter Pauline Heath (Wayne), Mt. Pearl; grandchildren: Geoffrey Bursey (Pamela), Deidre Lavoie (Rick), Christopher Heath (Tammy), Michelle Francis, Daniel Gagnon; great-grandchildren: Leigh Bursey, Krae Taylor; brother Frank Bursey (Dorothy); sisters: Mable Halliday, Evelyn Power; sisters-in-law: Doreen Wall (Bursey), Beatrice French; special sister-in-law Jessie Fagner; special niece Shirley Pitcher (Oliver); as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends. Passed peacefully away after a short battle with cancer at the Palliative Care Unit St. Clares Mercy Hospital on Monday, June 3, 2002, Gertrude Burt age 59 years. Predeceased by her daughter Elsie, parents; Silas and Levina Hibbs and sister Byrlnn Randall.
Leaving to mourn with loving memories her devoted husband of 42 years, Cyril Burt, two loving daughters Betty (Ron) Barker and Alice Lane. One devoted son Ivan (Linda), nine grandchildren, Ron (Jr), Adam, Jennifer, Marybeth, Samantha, Heidi, Kerrianne, Jannessa and Andrew. Three sisters, Bessie (Martin) Burt, Daisy (Dwight) Langdon and Mabel Keats; three brothers; Art (Olive) Hibbs, Norman (Janet) Hibbs and Rex (Marg) Hibbs. Passed peacefully away at the Hoyles Home on June 7, 2002, Gladys Sophie Butt, aged 58 years. Predeceased by her husband Roland in 1976.

Passed peacefully away at her residence in St. John's, on Saturday, September 13, 2003, Wilhelmina (Gill) Caines age 81 years.
Predeceased by husbands: Herbert Gill and Ted Caines. Left to cherish the memory of a loving mother are her children: Rick Gill (Pauline), Wanda (Wayne Fost), and Gordon Gill (Shelley); a devoted grandmother to Gregory and Peter Gill, Jason and Jeremy Fost, Mark and Brian Penney and granddaughter Julie Gill - 'her precious angel'. Also survived by three stepchildren: Marilyn Burt, Bruce and Derrick Caines; sisters-in-law: Rosalie Dawe, Pamela Rose, and Dorothy Acreman; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and her dear friends.

Kathleen Shirley (nee Dalton) Christopher
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of a very special wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend. Kathy passed peacefully away at the Health Science Centre on July 28, 2003, aged 48 years, after a sudden illness.
Predeceased by her father Fred; brother Freddie; mother-in-law Mary Christopher and father-in-law John Christopher.
Mourning her deeply: beloved husband and best friend of 24 years, Bernard; precious daughter Amanda (fianc' Danny); gran's special angel Erin; mother Mary; sisters: Beth Seaward (Frank), ON, Alice (Derrick), Shirley (Rob), Halifax; brothers: Rick (Carolyn), Randy (Allison) and Mike, Edmonton; sisters-in-law: Bernadette Doyle (Pat), Lena Chafe (Gil) and Mary Kerrivan; brothers-in-law: Steve (Mercedes), John (Georgina), Dickie (Linda), Paddy (Darlene), Burnaby, BC; as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends.

Cassie Lillian Clarke (nee Moore) passed peacefully away at her home on Saturday, January 11th, 2003 in the presence of her loving family, Cassie Lillian Clarke, aged 84 years.
Predeceased by her husband Raymond (1994), daughter in law Alexa (2001), great grandson Nicholas Blagdon (2001), and son Raymond (2002). Left to mourn her passing are sons; Harris (Joan), and Gary; daughters; Gladys (Norman Mason), Barbara (Maurice Quinton), and Gail (Roger Norman); daughter in law Bernice; fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother in law Rupert Clarke (Jean) and a large circle of other relatives and friends including caregivers; Linda Evans, Margie Lethbridge, Sandra Penney and Kay Yetman.

David Andrew Clarke
Passed peacefully into God's hands, at the Hoyles-Escasoni Complex on Wednesday, January 22, 2003, David Clarke, nine days shy of his 85th birthday, formerly of Heart's Desire, St. John's and most recently of Kelligrews, long- time employee of Stokes Construction.
Predeceased by his first wife, Mary Howard (1980), second wife Rita Meaney (Randell) (1993), brothers Bernard and Lawrence, and sister Veronica. Leaving to mourn his daughter Lorraine Clarke (Paul Matthews), granddaughter Andrea Bugden, step-children Marie Hibbs (Hector), Rita Coles (Wade), Ann Oldford, Mary Dawe (Reginald), Margaret Peddle, and Suzanne Dawe (Tony), sister Stella Yetman of Massachusetts, dear friend Stella Walsh of Kelligrews, and a wide circle of other relatives and friends. Special thanks to the staff at the transition unit, Hoyles-Escasoni for their loving care.

William James (Jim) Clarke World War Two Veteran, 59th Heavy Artillery Regiment (#971622), retired CNR Policeman. passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on January 24, 2003.
Predeceased by infant son Richard, parents James and Martha Clarke, brother Fred and sister Helen Samson. Leaving to mourn loving wife of 53 years, Audrey (Curlew), son: John (Debbie Fry) of St. John's, daughters: Linda Boehner (Robert) of Darthmouth, Nova Scotia, Melanie Stanley (Paul) of Mt. Pearl, Janice Langille (Andrew) of Trepassey.
