James C. Daragan Jr.

James C. Daragan Jr., 79, died Sunday, August 15, 1999 at the Iroquois Nursing Home. Mr. Daragan's last residence was Carriage House East in Manlius, NY., but he was born in Danbury, CT.

Mr. Daragan attended Georgia Tech University and graduated from Tri State College of Indiana where he received his Civil Engineering Degree.

Mr. Daragan was employed as a Civil Engineer for the American Electric Power Corporation in Danbury for 30 years until his retirement in 1983.

Mr. Daragan was a Navigator in the Army Air Force during World War II and was shot down over Germany on a mission. He was a Prisoner of War for 14 months.

Mr. Daragan is survived by his wife, Katherine (Tretler) Daragan of Manlius, NY; two daughters, Patricia Daragan Axelrod of West Brook, CT and Sharon Daragan of Danbury, CT; a step-son, Eugene Cross, Jr. of Bridgeport, NY; three step daughters, Linda Hill of Cuyler, NY., Debra Aiken of Middlegrove, NY. and Laurel Baum of Manlius, NY., in addition to several grandchildren.

A service will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 1999 at the Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home, Inc., 4612 So. Salina Street, Syracuse, NY. Burial will follow in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Onondaga Hill, NY.

Calling Hours will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 1999 at the Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home.

Contributions in Mr. Daragan's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of CNY, 441 West Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, NY 13204.

Cecelia L. McNiff

Cecelia Leah (Hardman) McNiff, 90, died peacefully in Danbury, at the home of her son, Robert McNiff and his wife, Mary, on Friday, August 13th. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Joseph P. McNiff in May of 1989.

Mrs. McNiff was born in Willimantic, August 8, 1909, daughter of the late John and Leah (Beruby) Hardman. She had lived in Holyoke, MA, for much of her life, prior to moving to Danbury in 1992. Cecelia carried out her life with decency and purpose as a loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother and mother-in-law.

In addition to her son and daughter-in-law in Danbury, she is survived by a sister, Elaine Mielke of San Diego, CA; seven grandchildren, including Elizabeth and Kelly McNiff, Joseph McNiff and his wife, Marni, all of Danbury; two other sons, Russell McNiff and James McNiff of Holyoke; a great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service of prayer and remembrance was held at the family plot at St. Jerome Cemetery in Holyoke on Saturday.

Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, was in charge of the arrangements. Contributions may be made to: Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut, 30 West St., Danbury, CT 06810.

Alvin Ruml

Alvin Ruml of Redding, Conn. died on Monday, August 16, 1999 at his home. He was 74.

Mr. Ruml was born in Bronxville, N.Y. to the late Beardsley and Lois Treadwell Ruml. He attended Phillips-Exeter Academy and Harvard University. He graduated from Washington Square College and New York University School of Law. Mr. Ruml served in World War II as a lieutenant in the Air Force.

Long active in Redding affairs, Mr. Ruml donated his time generously. He developed a plan providing tax relief for the elderly in Redding. This was one of the first such programs in Connecticut. In addition, he served on the regional school board until 1972. He was chairman of the Board of Finance, on which he had served since 1972. He was a founding member of Redding Open Lands, Inc., a longtime member of the Democratic Town Committee and the Investment Committee of Danbury Hospital. He was also on the board of New Pond Farm. He was a member of the Century Club and the Harvard Club in New York City.

In addition to his wife, Elizabeth Ruml of Redding, Mr. Ruml is survived by a daughter, Lois Ruml Reinert of Cupertino, Calif.; a son, Treadwell Ruml II of Redlands, Calif.; five stepdaughters, Elizabeth Williams, Susan Kulowiec, Sarah Meehan and Mary Williams, all of Redding, and Kathleen Primus of East Norwalk, Conn.; and seven grandchildren.

Contributions in Mr. Ruml's memory may be made to the Dorothy Day Hospitality Center, 11 Spring St., Danbury, CT 06810.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 28, noon, at the Congregational Church in Redding Center, Conn.

Jane B. Wells

Jane B. Wells, of Sewanee, Tenn. died on August 12, 1999 in Sewanee. She was 86.

She was born in Fairfield, Conn. and lived in Redding, Conn. for 66 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Wells, and her daughter, Edith Wells Grenier.

Survivors include her sons, Thomas Wells of Sewanee, Tenn. and Charles Wells of Ridgefield, Conn.; her brother, Leo Brzozowski of Huntington, Conn.; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in Redding, Conn. at the convenience of the family.

Edward Jack Cosgrove

Edward Jack Cosgrove, 76, of Pinehurst, N.C. died on August 11, 1999 at Future Care-Chesapeake in Arnold, Md. after an illness of two months.

He was born in Middletown, N.Y. on July 15, 1923 and attended high school in Danbury, Conn.

With the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. Cosgrove landed on Normandy Beach on D-Day and received a Bronze Star for bravery and a Purple Heart.

He was employed at Becton-Dickenson, a medical supply company, in various positions, including sales manager, engineer and plant manager. Mr. Cosgrove enjoyed golf. He had previously lived in Coral Gables, Fla. and had been a resident of Pinehurst for 10 years.

Mr. Cosgrove is survived by a son, Ken Cosgrove of Severna Park, Md.; a daughter, Phyllis Confer of Madison, Conn.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date. Interment will be private. There are no calling hours.

Maurice F. Le Roi

Maurice (Mory) F. Le Roi, 63, died suddenly on August 13, 1999 while at work for Contact Systems, the company where he was employed for 23 years. He was previously employed by Amphenol for 20 years. He was also a First Lieutenant in the Mill Plain Fire Department and bowled in numerous leagues over 20 years. He was treasurer of the Blue Trail Wireless CB Club of New Milford and an active electronics enthusiast. He was known for his constant pursuit of perfection in everything he did. He was an avid fan of classical and country music and liked to collect model trains. He had a wry sense of humor and was known to his extended family as "Mr. Fix-It." His humor and his fixing will be sorely missed.

Maurice was born in Danbury to Francois and Stanisla Le Roi on May 22, 1936. He was predeceased by his father, mother and sister, Germaine Marks-Fodo. He is survived by his brother Marcel Le Roi of Southbury, his wife Elisabeth (Betsy) and their daughter Diana of New Milford; daughter Bonnie Wojasiak of California, three grandchildren (Jenny, Michelle and Michael); and daughter Sandra Bates of California and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Aug. 22 at 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, New Milford opposite Pettibone School on Rt. 7. Reception to follow at same location. Memorial contributions may be made to the Housatonic Friends Quaker Meeting, PO Box 43, New Milford, CT 06776.

Leo C. Corcoran

Leo C. Corcoran, died Aug. 17, 1999 at Harborside Glen Hill Convalescent Home at the age of 94. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Betty) Lowry Corcoran and had lived at 19 Brookfield Meadows, Brookfield.

Mr. Corcoran was born in Archibald, Pa. Aug. 15, 1905, son of the late Michael and Anne Murphy Corcoran. He graduated from Pace University with a degree in accounting and worked for Joseph E. Seagrams Co. as head of the payroll dept. for over 40 years, until his retirement in 1970.

Mr. and Mrs. Corcoran settled in Brookfield over 20 years ago. He was a member of St. Joseph Church and was deeply devoted to his family. He is survived by his son Eugene Corcoran of Bronx, N.Y.; his daughter Mary (Ginger) McGrade and son-in-law, Dr. John McGrade of Brookfield; his grandchildren, John Corcoran of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and Kerry McGrade Bomba and Dr. Sean McGrade both of Brookfield; his great grandchildren Molly Bomba, Christopher and Melissa Corcoran, and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, Rt. 133, Brookfield on Friday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ridgefield. Friends may call at the Brookfield Funeral Home, 786 Federal Rd., Brookfield on Thursday. from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church in his memory.

James C. Rooney

James C. Rooney, age 56, of New Milford, Conn., formerly of Brewster, N.Y., died on August 16, 1999.

Mr. Rooney was born on April 17, 1943 in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. to the late Daniel J. and Angela (MaGee) Rooney Sr. He graduated from St. Lawrence O'Toole School and Brewster High School.

Mr. Rooney had lived in Brewster for most of his life, residing in New Milford for the past two years. He was a member of St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in Brewster.

Mr. Rooney was a coordinator of accomodations for many celebrities who attended the annual Muscular Dystrophy Telethon in Las Vegas, Nev.

Mr. Rooney is survived by a cousin, Mr. Robert C. Rooney of Danbury, Conn. He was predeceased by two brothers, Daniel J. Rooney III on April 19, 1986 and Ronald F. Rooney on September 7, 1991.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, 10 a.m., at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in Brewster. There will be a private cremation.

Friends may call on Monday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Ave., Brewster.

Frederick C. Mead

Frederick C. Mead, age 92, of 116 South Main St. in Newtown, Conn. died on Thursday, August 19, 1999 at his home.

He was born in Greenwich, Conn. on Dec. 11, 1906, son of the late Sanford and Grace (Child) Mead. A resident of Newtown since 1914, Mr. Mead was a graduate of Newtown High School, Class of 1924. He was a graduate of Rensselaer College, Class of 1928.

Mr. Mead was a civil engineer employed by the State of Connecticut for 35 years until his retirement in 1971. He belonged to the Civil Engineer Association, State of Connecticut, and was a member of the Newtown Congregational Church.

He is survived by one nephew, John S. Mead of Newtown; one niece, Mary E. Buxton of Newtown; 10 grandnieces and grandnephews; and six great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, 11 a.m., at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St. in Newtown with Rev. Steven Gordon officiating. Interment will be in Newtown Village Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Marie J. Sandidge

Marie J. Sandidge died on August 18, 1999 at her home, 51 Main St., The Commons, in Danbury, Conn., at the age of 93. She was the wife of the late Robert Sandidge.

She was born on July 2, 1906 in Yonkers, N.Y., daughter of the late Stephen and Francis Kozel Bozik. She received her early education in Yonkers and graduated from the White Plains School of Nursing. Mrs. Sandidge was employed for many years as a registered nurse for the New York Telephone Company. She served in the WACs in World War II as an Army nurse. She was a member of St. Peter Church in Danbury and a member of the AARP.

Mrs. Sandidge is survived by her sister, Mildred Halas of Danbury; a stepdaughter, Barbara McKinney of Bradenton, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, 9 a.m., at St. Peter Church in Danbury. Burial will be in Wooster Cemetery in Danbury. There are no calling hours.

The Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White St., Danbury is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Nethercott Sr.

Richard Nethercott Sr., formerly of Port Chester, N.Y. and Bethel, Conn., died August 18, 1999 at his West Chesterfield, N.H. home.

He was the loving husband of the late Nora E. Alworth; devoted father of Michael Nethercott of Guilford, Vt. and Richard Nethercott Jr. of West Chesterfield, N.H.; and loving brother of Raymond and Larry Nethercott, both of Port Chester, N.Y., Jack Nethercott of Somers, N.Y., Anne Ravenda of Bethel, Conn., Jane DeGraw of Greshan, Ore., Linda DeBell of Port Chester, N.Y. and Regina Nethercott of Rye, N.Y.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, 1 p.m., at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Brattleboro, Vt.

Calling hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Max E. Carr Funeral Home, 147 Western Ave., Brattleboro, Vt.

John W. Leibold Jr.

John W. Leibold Jr., age 81, husband of the late Jean (Brown) Leibold of 52 Mt. Nebo Road, Newtown, CT, died August 20, 1999, in Bethel Health Care.

Mr. Leibold was born in Waterbury, CT, Sept. 6, 1917, son of the late John and Ruth (Ruffles) Leibold.

A lifelong resident of Newtown he was a graduate of Newtown High School. Prior to World War II he assisted his father in the operation of his dairy farm.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Leibold served in the 29th Division as a staff sergeant. He was in the Normandy invasion. On July 17, 1944, during the attack on St. Lo, he was wounded in action. He is the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal.

He was discharged at the Cushing General Hospital, and returned to Newtown. For a short while, he worked for the Big Y Feed Store in Monroe. He then established his own building business and continued to build houses until his retirement in 1989.

He is survived by a son and daughter, John W. Leibold III and Mary Lewis, both of Newtown; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at 11:00 a.m. at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main St., Newtown. Cremation will follow. Friends may call Monday from 7 to 9:00 p.m.
