George J. Piro, Sr.

George J. Piro, Sr., 84, World War II veteran and former Greenwich plumber of Rye Brook, N.Y. died July 3, 2010.

He was born Oct. 18, 1925 in Wilkes Barre, Pa. to George and Anna Novak Piro.

He was raised and educated in Pennsylvania and moved to Stamford at the age of 13. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater and was a retired plumber for Local #777 in Greenwich, Ct.

Piro is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Filomena Piro of Rye Brook, NY.; a son, George Piro, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Norwalk; a daughter, Mary Wolf and husband Richard of Annandale, Va..; a sister, Bernie Moccia of Trumbull; a brother, Edward Piro of Norwalk; and four grandchildren: Jonathan and Julie Wolf and Samantha and Daniel Piro. He was predeceased by his brother Michael Piro and sister Mary Boasso.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on July 8 at Corpus Christi Church 136 in Port Chester, N.Y. Interment followed at St. Mary's cemetery in Rye Brook, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations in memory of Piro may be to Autism Speaks 1060 State Rd. Princeton, NJ 08540.

Edward Rupp

Edward Rupp, 88, World War II veteran and former Greenwich resident of Crossville, Tenn. passed away June 8, 2010.

He was born on Sept. 6, 1921 in Greenwich to John and Nellie Chemilowiz Rupp. He retired after many years with Homelite where he worked as an experimental mechanic. He and his wife Jeanne lived in Greenwich and Rock Hill, S.C. before moving to Crossville after his retirement.

Rupp was a U.S. Navy veteran having served our country during World War II. Throughout his tour he served on many ships and submarines, including the USS Cowell, USS Billfish, USS Puffer as well as many others.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Rupp of Crossville; a daughter, Noelle Garland and her husband, Dr. Ty Garland also of Crossville; a brother, Frank Rupp, his wife, Josephine and their children, Frank Jr. and JoAnne of Greenwich; three grandchildren: T.J. Garland, John Garland and April Garland; and two nephews, Keith and Kevin Filanowski. He was preceded in death by his sister, Stephanie Filanowski.

Memorial services were held June 11 at Chapel of Hood Funeral Home in Crossville. Full military honors were given. Hood Funeral Home and Crematory in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Brady Routh

Dorothy Brady Routh of Greenwich, and Boca Raton, Fla., passed away June 24, 2010, peacefully in her home in Boca Raton, surrounded by her family.

She married John S. Routh, Jr. of Greenwich, and Boca Raton, FL, who predeceased her in 2001. They raised six children: Rylee Routh of Charleston, SC, Brenda and her husband Reed Whitacre of New York, N.Y., Lorraine Routh Nelson of Stonington, Isabel Reddy of Durham, N.C., John S. Routh of Greenwich, and Michael R. Routh of San Jose, Calif. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Felice Reddy, Julia Reddy, Stephanie Ruley, John David Ruley, John Maxwell Routh, Annaliesa Routh, Caroline Routh, Monica Nelson and Claire Nelson.

Funeral services were held in Boca Raton. A Memorial Service will be held July 18, 2010, 2pm, at the Blind Brook Club, Purchase, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the New York-Presbyterian Hospital Fund for Medicine or to the Boca Raton Community Hospital.

Nicolena Sabito

Nicolena Sabito, 88, a lifelong resident of Greenwich, passed away on July 2, 2010. Sabito was born on Nov. 9, 1921 in Greenwich to John and Conchetta Strazza. She served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Roch's Roman Catholic Church for many years. She spent the last six years as a resident of Nathaniel Witherell nursing home.

She is survived by her son John Sabito and daughter-in-law Maria Sabito of Fairfield; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Sabito of Greenwich; and her four grandchildren: Marissa Dawson, Dannielle Sabito, Jason Sabito and John Sabito Jr. She was also predeceased by her husband, Frederick D. Sabito; her son, Frank J. Sabito; three brothers, Charles Strazza, Jerry Strazza and Rocco Strazza; and a sister, Mary Belfatto.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on July 8 at St. Roch's Church. Internment followed in St. Mary cemetery in Greenwich.

Elene C. Sechi

Elene C. Sechi, a Greenwich native and Greenwich hairdresser and cosmetologist, died on June 24, 2010 at Greenwich Hospital.

She was the daughter of Helen and Frank L. Salerno of Greenwich and the wife of Nino S. Sechi for 59 years.

Following graduation from Greenwich High School, she attended J. M. Wright Technical School and was a licensed hairdresser and cosmetologist in Greenwich. She worked in full service beauty salons in Greenwich for over 10 years.

While her children were attending Hamilton Avenue School, she was active with the PTA and served as treasurer and on executive boards as program and scholarship chairman. She organized a women's handcraft group called "Busy Fingers, " which made gift items for Christmas sales and served as chairperson of fashion shows, buffet suppers and school fairs.

A communicant and life-long parishioner of St. Roch Church in Chickahominy, she sang in its adult choir and later became choir director for St. Roch from 1969 to 1993. Sechi was chairman of the Liturgical Committee, where she served for 14 years and was also cantor from 1972 - 1999. Under the late pastor, the Rev. Anthony Intagliata, she directed a slide presentation to parishioners explaining Christian signs and symbols as pictured in the stained glass windows of St. Roch Church. Her love of music also led her to join the Connecticut Playmakers, a community theater group, where she served for many years on its board of directors, appeared in and co-produced and produced various Broadway shows such as "Shenandoah", "Showboat", "Two for the Seesaw, " "Cabaret, " "Man of La Mancha, " and "Side by Side by Sondheim."

Sechi was also responsible for costume design, make-up and props for the Playmakers over the years for such shows as "1776", "Robber Bridegroom", "Brigadoon", "Once Upon a Mattress", "Arts in the Park" and Playmakers on Wheels". One of her greatest enjoyments was designing Easter bonnets for a Playmakers' presentation of Irving Berlin's classic, "In Your Easter Bonnet."

During those years she was also a member of the St. Mary Church Adult Christmas Choir from 1986 to 2008.

For several years she was proprietor of "The Little Hutch, " a beads and handcrafts shop on Greenwich Avenue. In 2008 she was honored with the bronze medal of St. Augustine by Bridgeport Bishop William Lori for her many years of volunteer service to St. Roch.

In addition to her husband, Sechi is survived by three children: Steve and his wife, Patty of Greenwich; a daughter, Lou Ann and her husband, Robert of Westport; and a son, Joseph and his wife, Toni of Greenwich. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Taryn, Tristen, Taylor, Katie and Jessie; and a sister, Mary Ann Dobratz, a nephew and grand nephew, all of Seattle, Wash. She was predeceased by a brother, Frank Salerno.

A funeral mass was held on June 29 at St. Roch Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sechi's memory to St. Roch Church, 10 St. Roch Avenue, Greenwich, Ct., 06830.

Amerigo Aldo Stroili

Amerigo Aldo "Moe" Stroili, 84, World War II veteran and a Greenwich resident, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2010.

He was born to Francesco Benedetto and Enrica Tosoni Stroili on Oct. 23, 1925 in Cavazzo Carnico, Italy. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Stroili enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing on his computer, and spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a man who touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity, and maintained his trademark sense of humor throughout his life.

He is survived by two sons, Frank and Ken; his daughter-in-law, Margaret; his brother, Charles Stroili; three grandchildren: Allison, Mark, and Christopher. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Comfort Stroili and a brother, Eddie Stroili.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on July 7 at St. Roch Church. Internment followed in St. Mary cemetery in Greenwich.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to American Lung Association of Connecticut, 45 Ash Street, East Hartford, CT 06108-3272.

Roberta Rodney Buscher

Roberta Rodney Buscher, former Greenwich resident of New Canaan, died on Feb. 14, 2010 with her children by her side.

Known simply as "Grammie" to many, she was born in New Brunswick, N.J. and was the youngest daughter of Edward and Estelle Rodney.

Buscher was a model for Miss America in New York City before her marriage, and her love of fashion and fitness continued throughout her lifetime.

She was also an avid fan of UConn women's basketball and the New York Giants. Family and friends will remember her for her love of coffee and chocolate, a warm, loving smile, grace and understated elegance, and love for her family.

She leaves her two daughters, Susan Oppenheimer of Monroe and Nancy McGann of Glastonbury; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Michelle Buscher of New Canaan; her granchildren, Michael and Sarah Buscher, Kelly and Eden McGann, and Greg and Brooke Oppenheimer; and her three great-grandchildren: Grayden, Braveny and Breyer. She was predeceased by her sisters, Edwina Whitman and Dorothy Van Deursen, and by her husband of 58 years, John Edward Buscher.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 27 at the First Congregational Church of Old Greenwich. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, her memory may be honored by contributions to The First Congregational Church, Women's Ministry, 108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT 06870; the Greenwich Hospital Development Office at 5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich, Ct 06830; or to the charity of one's choice.
