Norma Mathis

Norma Mathis, 83, a Greenwich resident for over 35 years, died on April 2, 2010. She was raised in New York City, and attended the Calhoun School and the Juilliard School of Music where she studied piano.

Mathis was a lifelong supporter of the arts, particularly music and theater. She performed many roles as a member of The Acting Company in Greenwich for more than 25 years. Mathis also worked for the architect Richard Foster for 19 years until the office closed in 2000; prior to that, she worked for the financial firm Chronogram, both in Greenwich. She was also a strong supporter of animal rights and conservation organizations.

A memorial service at the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich will take place on Saturday, June 5 at 11 am.

Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association and the Greenwich Adult Day Care in Cos Cob.

Claire Anne Mathews

Claire Anne "Nancy" Mathews, 66, of Old Greenwich, passed away on May 3, 2010 at The Nathaniel Witherell Home in Greenwich.

She was born in Greenwich to Thomas and Claire Mathews and was a lifelong resident of town. Mathews attended Greenwich schools and the University of Connecticut, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She went on to earn a law degree from Suffolk Law School in Boston.

Mathews worked in the airline industry for TWA (later American Airlines) for more than 30 years. After retiring from the airline, she was a longtime volunteer at The Nathaniel Witherell.

She will be remembered as a thoughtful, strong-willed woman who enjoyed life.

Her interests included gardening, cooking, and especially the beach at Tod's Point in the early morning.

In addition, she read and travelled extensively and was familiar with the great cities and the food and culture on all of the continents.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Carol Mathews of Suffield; her niece Stacy Mathews of Greenwich; her nephew and his wife, Owen and Susan Mathews of Wilmington, Del.; her niece Hillary Mathews of Boston, Mass.; and her nephew Graham Mathews of Phoenix, Ariz.

She was predeceased by her sister, Sheila Mathews.

Burial will take place today at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Cemetery, followed by a private memorial service.

Gene G. Pangaro

Gene G. Pangaro, 58, of Greenwich, passed away on April 27, 2010.

He was born in Port Chester, N.Y. to Susan Tortora Pangaro and the late Gustav Pangaro. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Jeff Pangaro and his wife Keisha; his daughter, Amy Hatcher and her husband Kevin; his brother, Ronald Pangaro and his wife Ginger; and his four grandchildren: Michael, Christopher, Jayna and Giovanna. He was predeceased by his father in 2009.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at Sacred Heart Church. Internment followed in St. Mary cemetery in Greenwich

Nikolas Bona Pavelic

Nikolas Bona Pavelic, 21, a former resident of Old Greenwich, died as the result of a motorcycle accident on April 24, 2010 in San Francisco, less than 100 yards from the Pacific Ocean and his home in the Sunset section.

Pavelic was born in New York City, Dec. 27, 1988 to Mercy Bona and Radovan Pavelic.

He went to Old Greenwich School and graduated from Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, Calif. He was a student at San Francisco State University.

His many friends in Old Greenwich will remember him as a high-spirited young man who enjoyed life each day.

In addition to his parents, Pavelic is survived by his sister Thana; his grandmother, Angelique Salic; an uncle, Ivan Pavelic; an uncle, Chris Pavelic, aunt Euginie and cousins Christopher and Chase, all of Greenwich.

He is also survived by his uncle Milan Srskic and his wife, Ellen and their daughters Tammy, Anne, and Stephanie; his uncle, Branko, aunt Saba and cousin, Tatiana Krmpotic in the U.S. and by his many other uncles, aunts, cousins and family living in Croatia and Serbia.

Grace A. Portanova

Grace A. Portanova, 88, died on April 29, 2010 at her residence. Born in Greenwich, she was a daughter of Pat and Elisa Caravella.

Portanova was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and resided in Myrtle Beach Golf and Yacht Club.

Survivors include her husband, Nicholas M. Portanova, Sr. of Myrtle Beach; a son, Nicholas Michael Portanova and his wife, Susanne of Cary, N.C.; three grandchildren; a brother, Louis Caravella of Greenwich; and a sister, Pat Richter of Manassas, Va. She was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Joseph Paul Portanova; brothers, Dom Caravello and Auggie Caravella and a sister, Angie Brooks.

Funeral services was held on May 4 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel with Father Andrew Trapp officiating. Entombment followed at Hillcrest Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to American Arthritis Foundation, 200 E. Woodlawn Rd. Ste. 156 Charlotte, NC 28217. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Albert M. Roth

Albert M. Roth, 81, of Boynton Beach Fla., passed away on April 9, 2010.

He was born in Port Chester N.Y. on Nov. 23, 1928 and was a longtime resident of Greenwich.

Roth is survived by his wife, Phyllis, sons, Albert J. Roth of Milford and Andrew J. Roth of Hanover NH, daughter Allison J. Roth of Woodstock, VT, and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert, and three sisters: Alice, Margery and Elizabeth. A memorial service will be planned for a later date.

Alfred Francis Camillo Sr.

Alfred Francis Camillo Sr., 80, a Greenwich native who lived most of his life in his hometown, passed away on Feb. 14, 2010.

He was born on Aug. 18, 1929 to Robert and Rose Cofone Camillo. He spent his early years growing up in Greenwich's Italian neighborhood known to many as "Chickahominy, " and spent his days in the neighborhood tending to animals, playing baseball, and filling the streets with his amazing vocals which reminded all who heard him of his idol, Frank Sinatra.

In 1950, Camillo entered the U.S. Marine Corp. where he was stationed in Albany, Ga. and served as an assistant drill instructor.

In 1953, he started his own business, Camillo Carting, a waste disposal company, which he continued to work every day until he became afflicted with diabetes in the late 90s. He ultimately divested the business in 2002.

Family and friends will remember Camillo as a man with a quick wit and extraordinary character, a captivating storyteller with a warm smile, and a proud Marine.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen Cuddihy Camillo; two sons, Gary Camillo and hhis wife Diane of Fairfield and Alfred "Fred" Camillo Jr. of Greenwich; a daughter, Francine Pennella and her husband Anthony Pennella; and two grandchildren, Ben and Ali of Stamford.

He is also survived by his sister, Ann Camillo Giandurco of Port Chester, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Margaret "Mickey" Camillo; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marie Prizio, and a daughter, Donna Marie, as well as a brother, Joseph Camillo.

A funeral mass took place on Feb. 18 at St. Agnes Church in Greenwich.
