Thomas B. Cavanaugh
Was Waterbury deputy fire chief

WOLCOTT - Thomas B. Cavanaugh, of Peach Orchard Drive, former Waterbury deputy fire chief, husband of Eileen (Shea) Cavanaugh, died Thursday morning at Wolcottview Manor. He was 90 years old.

Thomas was born Sept. 6, 1918, in Waterbury, son of the late James and Margaret (Bergin) Cavanaugh. He attended local schools, graduating from Wilby High School. He served in the Army as a sergeant during World War II, specializing in engineering, and serving nine months in the European Theatre.

In 1946, Thomas was appointed a permanent member of the Waterbury Fire Department. He was acting lieutenant for Engine Co. 2, and in 1959 was promoted to the rank of captain and assigned to Engine Co. 4 "A" Group. In 1965, Thomas was promoted to the rank of battalion chief and assigned to Truck 3. Finally, in 1970, he was promoted to the rank of deputy fire chief, retiring in September 1983 at the age of 65, after 37 years of service to the City's fire department.

While Thomas enjoyed an illustrious career in the Waterbury Fire Department, he was also a member of the Waterbury Elks, AOH Club and the Waterbury Area Fire Chiefs.

Besides his wife of Wolcott, Mr. Cavanaugh is survived by his sons, James, John, Edward, Francis and Timothy, all of Waterbury, and a daughter, Mary Ellen Squatriglia of Naugatuck. He also leaves four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas James, and a sister, Mildred Moore.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Monday at SS. Peter & Paul Church. Burial will be in New St. Joseph Cemetery, Waterbury. Friends may call at The Snyder Funeral Home, 114 Willow St., Waterbury, on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked contributions in Thomas' name be made to the Waterville Fire House, 1551 Thomaston Ave., Waterbury 06704.

Mrs. Rita M. Mangini
Saint Mary's Hospital retiree

WATERBURY - Rita M. (Morin) (Martone) Mangini, 92, of Waterbury, passed away Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at Saint Mary's Hospital. She was the widow of Carmine Martone and Anthony F. Mangini.

Rita was born Aug. 5, 1917, in Waterbury, daughter of the late Eugene and Claudia (Ouellette) Morin. She retired from Saint Mary's Hospital in 1981 after 17 years of service. For many years she had been employed at SS. Peter & Paul Church. She was a member of St. Leo the Great Church and the AARP. She enjoyed bingo and crossword puzzles.

She leaves her sons, Donald Martone and his wife, Charlotte, of Prospect and Charles and Catherine Martone of Sciota, N.Y.; her brothers, Robert Morin of Waterbury, Leo Morin of Naugatuck and Ernest Morin of Indianapolis, Ind.; her sister, Jeannette LaVallee of Waterbury; her grandchildren, Donald (Melissa) Martone Jr., Marlene (Ronald) Rinaldi, David Martone, Mark (Stacy) Martone, Angela (Michael) Lopaska, John (Karin) Martone, Philip Martone, Lisa (Bob) Baron, Lynn (Gregg) Secula, Dina Shepard and her fiance, Craig Kenny; her step grandchildren, Kelly, Kathleen, John and Matthew Stankes; 19 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and her daughter-in-law, Judy Martone. She was predeceased by her son, James.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Leo the Great Church, 14 Bentwood Road, Waterbury. Friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Family and friends may call at Woodtick Memorial, 420 Woodtick Road, Wolcott, on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, P.O. Box 1612, Waterbury 06721.

Jane Basnight Byrd
State corrections worker

WATERBURY - Jane Basnight Byrd, 62, passed away on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Hartford Hospital. She was the devoted wife of Odess L. Byrd.

Mrs. Byrd was born in Elizabeth City, N.C., on June 23, 1948, daughter of the late Herman and Lenora B. Reid. She graduated from P.W. Moore High School in Elizabeth City, and received an A.S. degree from Mattatuck Community College in Waterbury. She was formerly employed by the State of Connecticut Department of Corrections.

Mrs. Byrd was surrounded by Jehovah's Witnesses her entire life and made a formal dedication to Jehovah in 2005.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Aresta Johnson (Kevin), and three sons, Winifred Thompson, Obee Byrd and Keith Byrd, all of Waterbury. She was also the loving grandmother to her four grandchildren, Obee, Kaison, Daija and Aiden, all of Waterbury. Her sisters and brothers will forever cherish her memory: Verneice Teasley, Ernesta Turner (Laverne), Reba Turner (Carlton), Tammy Reid, Larnetta Brothers (Lindale), Ronnita Spence (Morrell), Tarrie Reid (Angela), Melvin Reid (Eula), Arnell Reid (Gina) and Montre Reid. Jane was predeceased by a brother, Winfred D. Hughes. She will also be dearly missed by her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Brenda Byrd (Bill), Thelya Warden, Gail Fox (Carlton), Ulyssess Byrd (Janice), Richard Byrd, Peter Byrd (Lucinda), Rodney Byrd and Daniel Byrd. Jane leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends, including Kai Graves and Dionne Scott, and her beloved two aunts, Adelaide Hinton and Willie Mae Freeman.

Robert P. Parent

TERRYVILLE - Robert P. Parent, 72, husband of Patricia (Konitski) Parent, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday from the Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St., Terrryville, to St. Thomas Church, Thomaston, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m.

Mrs. Ruth R. Lapides
Formerly of Waterbury

WOODBRIDGE - Ruth R. Lapides passed away peacefully at home in Woodbridge on Feb. 10, 2011. Her zest for life, love of family and friends and creative spirit was ever present in her passion for the arts, her warm and hospitable home, and her many paintings, sculptures and garden. Mrs. Lapides was the beloved wife for 54 years to the late Robert E. Lapides, and daughter of the late Dr. Harry S. and Gladys L. Rosenberg of Meriden.

Mrs. Lapides attended St. Margaret's School, now the Chase School, in Waterbury, and graduated from Barnard College with a B.A. in history in 1947. Her lifelong involvement in the arts of New Haven was honored twice. In 2005, she received the C. Newton Schenck III Award for Lifetime Achievement and Contribution to the Arts from the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, a cast bronze award which she had designed in 1993. In 2010, Mrs. Lapides was the recipient of the New Haven Symphony Women of Note Award.

She pursued her artistic talent in the 1960s when she began painting with watercolors, acrylic and oils. Always on top of the current trends in art, fashion and style, she began creating oversized abstract paintings. She could be often found exploring MoMA and the galleries of New York City. Mrs. Lapides began sculpting, inspired by the aluminum manufactured at her husband's company, United Aluminum Corporation in North Haven. Kaiser Aluminum purchased several of her sculptures for their national headquarters in Oakland, Calif., and also produced a video on Mrs. Lapides' work, which was shown on public television. She was awarded commissions for cast bronze sculptures for local and national charities and organizations. Mrs. Lapides' tree of life sculptures are installed across the U.S., including the Leadership Development Center of the YWCA in Phoenix, Ariz., and the Michael J. McGivney Center for Cancer Care of the Hospital of Saint Raphael's in New Haven, in 1993. She created a bronze sculpture in 1995 for the Brennan Center for Justice in New York City, which was presented to former Justice Brennan of the U.S. Supreme Court by his law clerks.

Mrs. Lapides was an active leader in the arts community. She motivated countless others to actively connect with New Haven's leading arts organizations. As president of the O.C. Marsh Fellows program, Mrs. Lapides entertained the crowd as she introduced the monthly speakers. Over five decades, she served as a member of the boards of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, Creative Arts Workshop, Yale Art Gallery Associates and the New Haven Symphony Auxiliary, and she was also a fellow of Branford College at Yale.

Juana Muriente Pietri
Formerly of Waterbury

ADJUNTAS, Puerto Rico - Juana Muriente Pietri, 93, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, after a long illness.

She was born Nov. 10, 1918, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. She lived in Waterbury, Conn., for many years, retiring to Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, in 1980. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was predeceased in death by her husband, Santiago Pietri.

She is survived by her son, Domingo Pietri and wife, Carmen, of Adjuntas; a daughter, Concepción Bergoderi and husband, Luis Bergoderi, of Oakville; seven grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

She retired from Uniroyal after many years of service. She enjoyed reading, cooking and spending time with friends and family. She was very much loved by many and will be dearly missed.

Mrs. Sharon Lockwood
Beacon Falls resident

BEACON FALLS - Sharon Lockwood, age 67, of Beacon Falls, entered into rest Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at Bishop Wicke Health and Rehab Center. She was the beloved wife of Harold Lockwood.

The Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, is entrusted with Sharon's arrangements.

Brian F. Maietta Jr.
Wolcott High School graduate

WOLCOTT - Mr. Brian F. Maietta Jr., age 43, of Wolcott, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, at Saint Mary's Hospital.

Mr. Maietta was born on Jan. 6, 1968, in Waterbury, son of Patricia (Biase) Traver and Brian Maietta Sr. Brian was a graduate of Wolcott High School. He adored his family and friends and was always there for anything they needed. He enjoyed NASCAR, loved to spend time on Cape Cod and loved animals.

In addition to his mother, Patricia Biase Traver and her husband, Edward, of Wolcott and his father, Brian F. Maietta Sr. and his wife, Harriet, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Brian is survived by his brother, Michael Maietta and his wife, Jodi, of Waterbury; his grandmothers, Lena Maietta of Waterbury and Evelyn Traver of Wolcott; his aunt and godmother, Judy Biase of Waterbury; his aunts, Shirley Schwartz of Southington, Alice "Elaine" McGann of Southington, Sharon Barone of Waterbury and Barbara Hughes of Waterbury. He also leaves his nephew, Jake Maietta of Waterbury; his goddaughter, Molly McKinnon of Southington; his stepbrother, Robert Visconti, and stepsister, Cindi Visconti, both of South Carolina; as well as several cousins, extended family and beloved friends. He is predeceased by his grandparents, Alice and Patrick Biase, and grandfather, Frank Maietta.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Leo the Great Church, 14 Bentwood Drive, Waterbury, on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in St. Thomas cemetery in Southington. Family and friends may call at Maiorano Funeral Home, 95 Willow St., Waterbury, on Monday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.

Mrs. Laura F. Formaggioni
Memorial Mass Feb. 26

TORRINGTON - Laura F. Formaggioni, 76, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. She was the wife of Albino Formaggioni.

Laura was born in Torrington Dec. 13, 1934, the daughter of the late Silvio and Catherine Cremasco.

In addition to her husband, she leaves a daughter, Ida Keesler and husband, Tom; sons, Jack and Craig Formaggioni; a brother, Teddy Cremasco; and sisters, Pina Josefow, Marie Oakley, Betty Perry, Roseanne Cremasco, Silvia Dickinson and Linda Jones; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers Mario and Luciano Cremasco, and a sister, Isabelle Milanesi.

A memorial Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at St. Peter's Church.
