Stephen W. Stearns, 59, husband of Judy Riedel, of South Windsor, died Thursday (December 16, 2004) at Hartford Hospital. Born on September 5, 1945, son of Russell W. and Helen (Kinzle) Stearns of Plainville, MA, he had lived in South Windsor for the last 15 years. Besides his wife and parents he leaves a sister, Sandra and her husband Thomas Malone of East Greenbush, NY; three nephews, Bradford and his wife, Lori Malone, Gregory and Zachary Malone and two canine companions, Jesse and Chance. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, December 28, 7:30 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor, CT. His family will receive friends prior to the service, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hartford Hospital Cardiac Unit, 80 Seymour St., Hartford, CT 06102.

John B. Sawyer

SAWYER, John B. John B. Sawyer, 74, of Vernon, husband of Myrna Montena Sawyer, died Monday, (December 13, 2004) at home. Born in Ticonderoga, NY the son of the late John and Margaret O'Dell Sawyer, he lived in Vernon 20 years. He was president of Brainard Ford Truck Sales of Hartford prior to his retirement. John was an active volunteer for the Hockanum Valley Community Council Transportation Group and the Manchester Memorial Hospital for over ten years. He was a proud U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the Talcottville Congregational Church. Besides his wife Myrna, he leaves his son and daughter-in-law, John Michael and Marsha Sawyer of Warren Center, PA; his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Blair Tomalonis of Enfield; his sisters, Lillian Barber and Florence Wells of Glens Falls, NY; nine grandchildren, David, Abigail, Hannah, Rebekah, Lydia, Susanna and Eliana Sawyer of Pennsylvania and Brian and Matthew Tomalonis, both U.S. Marines serving in Iraq. He was predeceased by his brothers, Francis and Maurice. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 17, at 11 a.m. at the Talcottville Congregational Church, 13 Elm Hill Rd., Talcottville. Burial will be in Valley Falls Cemetery, Vernon, with full military honors. Friends may call at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Rd., Rte. 83, Vernon on Thursday, December 16 from 5 - 8 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to the Hockanum Valley Community Council Transportation Group, 155 West Main St. Vernon, CT 06066.

Richard Newton

Services: A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 23, 10 a.m., at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m., at St. Mary’s Church, 42 Spring Street, Windsor Locks. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in Windsor Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation: His family will receive friends on Wednesday, 4-7 p.m., at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home.
Richard Kenneth “Dick” Newton, 70, of Windsor Locks, formerly of Windsor, beloved husband of Delores C. Newton, passed away peacefully on Sunday, (December 19, 2004) at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born June 13, 1934 in Hartford, the son of the late Kenneth and Rose (Massaro) Newton. Dick grew up in Windsor, and Keene, NH. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed first in Japan, then in Great Falls, Montana, where he met and married Delores. Dick returned to Connecticut, living in Rocky Hill for nine years, before returning to Windsor, where he resided for 30 years. From 1956 until 1965 he was employed by Palmer Sheet Metal. In 1965, Dick opened a meat store, “Meatland, ” in the Wilson section of Windsor. In 1970 he began working in sales for Climate Equipment of West Hartford. He was employed by William Raveis (Coccomo Associates) Real Estate and Home Services of Windsor since 1990. Dick was a member of the Elks and a past president of the Lion’s Club of Windsor. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Chris of Middletown, and Ken and Amy of Wethersfield; a daughter, Patty Scavotto and son-in-law Michael Scavotto of Windsor Locks; five grandchildren, Zachary and Matthew Newton, Jennifer and Ashley Newton, and Shannon Scavotto; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Dick was predeceased by his brother, Fredrick P. Newton; and his sister, Marjorie M. Newton. After his family, he was passionate about playing and watching golf, loved being with friends, and watching UCONN women’s basketball. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 23, 10 a.m., at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m., at St. Mary’s Church, 42 Spring Street, Windsor Locks. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in Windsor Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery. His family will receive friends on Wednesday, 4-7 p.m., at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Connecticut, 2139 Silas Deane Hwy., Rocky Hill, CT 06067. Though he is gone from our sight he will live and be loved in our hearts.

Hector Trocchi

TROCCHI. Hector Trocchi, 95, of South Windsor, died Monday, (December 20, 2004) at his home. Born January 30, 1909 in the Providence of Montreale, Italy, son of the late Emidio and Matilda (Salvatore) Trocchi. He lived in Simsbury and Windsor before moving to South Windsor in 1965. Hector was employed for 42 years at Pratt & Whitney before retiring in 1974. He was an avid golfer and was a former member at the Manchester Country Club. He is survived by two sons, John Trocchi of Glastonbury and Jim Trocchi and his wife, Frances of Windsor; a daughter, Karen Taylor of Glastonbury; a brother, Anthony Trocchi of Simsbury; a sister, Rose Pricone and her husband, Salvatore of West Hartford; six grandchildren, Jacqueline Trocchi, Mark Trocchi, Timothy Trocchi, Kimberly Taylor, Raeann Trocchi and Michael Trocchi; two great grandchildren, Dylan and Hanna Victoria. He was predeceased by three brothers, Louis, Frederick and Zeno. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, December 23, at 10 a.m., at St. Gertrude Church 550 Matianuck Ave., Windsor. Joseph Warren Helme

HELME, Joseph Warren Joseph Warren Helme, 74, of Ellington, beloved husband for 48 years of Ruth (Littell) Helme, died peacefully at Hartford Hospital on Sunday, (December 12, 2004) from cancer. He was born on January 1, 1930 in Chester, NY, the son of the late Frank C. and Beatrice (Parkin) Helme. Joe was a graduate of Chester High School and Stevens Institute of Technology. He served in the United States Navy from 1953-1957. He moved to Wethersfield in 1957 and to Ellington in 1961. His favorite place to spend time was the family cottage in Old Saybrook. Whether in Ellington or Old Saybrook, if it was in need of repair, Joe was the first on the scene with a car full of tools at the ready. He had a life-long career with Cuno as Plant Manager in Stafford Springs and Talcottville, retiring as Vice President of Manufacturing in Meriden in 1995. Joe served the Town of Ellington for many years as a member of the Board of Finance, the Water Pollution Control Authority and the Charter Revision Commission. Joe is survived by his wife, Ruth; a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie Helme-Brother and James Brother of Ellington; and his sons and daughter-in-law, William, Amy and Thomas Brother; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and John Costello of Tolland; and their children, Johnny, Dan and Laura; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Jr. and Kassy Helme of Western Springs, IL and their children, Kady, Joseph III, Robert and Abigail; and daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Jeff Woodbridge of Springfield, VA and their children, Erin and Jeffrey. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 16, at 11 a.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Rd. (Rte. 83) Vernon. Interment will be in Ellington Center Cemetery, Ellington. Calling hours will be Wednesday, December 15, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joe's name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 18 North Main Street, West Hartford, CT 06107 or the Hall Memorial Library, 93 Main Street, Ellington, CT 06029.

Sharon (Clark) LaJoy, 62, of Granby, beloved wife of Walter “Wally” LaJoy passed away peacefully Saturday December 18, 2004 at Meadowbrook of Granby. Born on August 3, 1942 in Syracuse N.Y. she was the daughter of the late Orville and Phyllis (Hunt) Clark. Sharon spent her years growing up in Cazenovia NY, then relocated to Granby where she has lived for most of her life. She retired from the former G. Fox & Co. Hartford after many years of dedicated service. Besides her husband she is survived by a stepson, Steven LaJoy; a brother, Mark Clark of Crestview FL; a stepsister, Patricia Emerson and her husband Shain of Cazenovia NY; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday December 21 at 11:00 am at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home 364 Salmon Brook St. Granby. Interment will follow in Mt. St. Benedict cemetery Bloomfield. ZIMMERMAN, Josephine Josephine Zimmerman, 90, widow of Preston Zimmerman, formerly of Brian Road, South Windsor, died Tuesday, (November 30, 2004) at a local convalescent home. She was born in Manchester on February 5, 1914, the daughter of Mary Elizabeth (Vennard) Brown and Thomas Brown of Manchester, who were formerly of Portadown and Lurgan, Ireland respectively. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband and a brother, Thomas R. Brown of Manchester. Mrs. Zimmerman had lived in Rockville before moving to South Windsor in 1954. She worked with her husband at The Professional Hearing and Speech Aid Service until his death in 1991. She is survived by a son, Joel P. Zimmerman and his wife, Nancy D. Zimmerman of South Windsor; a daughter, Roseann George Burr and her husband, Thom Burr of Colchester; and five grandchildren, Kristen, Rebecca and Andrea Zimmerman and Robert G., Jr. and Maryjo George. A Memorial service will be held TODAY, December 2, at Wapping Community Church, 1790 Ellington Road, South Windsor, at 7 p.m. The Reverend Mark B. Abernethy will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in Josephine's name, to The Wapping Community Church Music Fund. The family wishes to thank the staff of Chestnut Point and Kettle Brook Care Centers in East Windsor for their kindness and compassion during a difficult time.
