Eugene Joseph Karlik Sr., 76

MILTON - Eugene J. Karlik Sr., of Milton, formerly of Wilmington, died Thursday Feb. 26, 1998, at home. He was 76.

Mr. Karlik was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Joseph H. and Maria Danes Karlik.

He worked as an auto mechanic for Delaware Oldsmobile in Wilmington for many years. He also worked for Short's Garage in Wilmington, retiring in 1977.

Mr. Karlik was an Air Force veteran.

He was a member of Temple Lodge 11 A.F. and A.M. of Wilmington

Mr. Karlik was a NASCAR fan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Woodring Karlik in 1988, and a son, Joseph H. Karlik in 1977.

He is survived by two daughters, Jo Ann Melson of Wilmington, and Gail and Richard Smith of Milton, with whom he lived with; a son, Eugene Karlik, Jr. of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; a brother, Robert Karlik of Wilmington; and four grandchildren.

Service will be 6:30 p.m. Saturday, at the home of Richard and Gail Smith, R.D. 3 Box 22, in Milton.

Burial will be private.

Instead of flowers the family suggest contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, Southern Division, 600 DuPont Highway, Georgetown, DE, 19947.

Joseph Delandor Lovett, 52

SEAFORD - Joseph Delandor Lovett of Seaford, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. He was 52.

Mr. Lovett was the son of Mrs. Hazel Lovett of Queens, N.Y., and the late Allen Lovett.

He was raised by his uncle and aunt, Alfred Thomas and the late Alice Thomas of Royal Oak.

He is survived by his wife, Linda L. Lovett; a daughters, Denika Lovett; three sons, Marcus Lovett, Joseph D. Lovett Jr. and Joseph Norman; and a stepson, Warner Johnson Jr.

Service will be at noon Monday at Union Baptist Church, 233 Glenwood Ave., Easton, Md.

Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Easton.

Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Beulah, Md.

Michael C. Acquaviva, 39

GREENWOOD - Michael C. Acquaviva of Greenwood, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 39.

Mr. Acquaviva worked for I.G. Burton & Co. for the last eight years in the Mr. Goodwrench department.

He enjoyed flying and playing golf.

Mr. Acquaviva was a member of Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford, where he was in the choir. He was also a member of the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. Barber Shop Quartet in Milford.

He was preceded in death by his father, Col. Onorio Acquaviva.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia D. 'Cindy' Acquaviva; his mother, Gilberta L. Acquaviva of Milford; a brother, James F. Acquaviva of Boone, N.C.; and a sister, Lynn M. Acquaviva of Milford.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Johnstown Cemetery near Greenwood.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Avenue United Methodist Church, Choir Fund, 20 N. Church St., Milford, DE 19963.

Dr. Stuart B. McMunn, 38

SEAFORD - Dr. Stuart B. McMunn of Seaford, died of cancer Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, in his home. He was 38.

Dr. McMunn was born in New Castle, Pa., the son of Dr. H. Earl McMunn of New Castle, Pa., and the late Dorothy B. McMunn.

He was a graduate of New Castle Senior High School, a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and a graduate of Temple University School of Medicine.

He was a medical doctor specializing in family practice in Georgetown and an affiliate with Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.

Dr. McMunn was a member of Epworth Fellowship Church in Laurel, a past member of Highland Presbyterian Church in New Castle, Pa., and a member of the American Medical Association. He was also a member of the Delaware Medical Society and a member of the American Board of Family Practitioners.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Lisa McMunn of Seaford; a son, Trevor Allan McMunn, at home; a daughter, Kelsey Elizabeth McMunn, at home; a brother, Forrest E. McMunn of Canberra, Australia; a sister, Susan M. Simpson of Edinburg, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Epworth Fellowship Church in Laurel, where friends may call two hours prior to the service. Friends may also call from 7-9 p.m. today at the Short Funeral Home in Laurel. Jerry Denton, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the McMunn Trust Account, c/o Mellon Bank Trust Dept., P.O. Box 8888, Wilmington, DE 19899.

Evangelist Shirley Alicon Cornish Cofield, 62

CHICAGO - Evangelist Shirley Alicon Cornish Cofield of Chicago, and formerly of Easton, Md., died after a lengthy illness Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, in her home. She was 62.

Mrs. Cofield was born in 1935 in Easton, the daughter of Marvin Harris of Cambridge, Md., and the late Dorothy Cornish Gibson.

She attended Talbot County, Md., public schools.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Bishop Arthur Cofield; two daughters, Brenda R. Jackson of Easton and Tracilyn R. 'Tre' Cofield of Chicago; four sons, Harry Roberts Jr. of Ridgely, Md., Arthur M. 'Sydney' Cofield, Jr. of Chicago, Artie Cofield of Richmond, Va., and Robert Levi (Robert Brooks) Cofield of Chicago; two granddaughters, whom she helped raise, Tori A. Brummell of Easton and Shawn-Dae McDowell of Minnesota; two sisters, Gloria Harris of Newton, Md., and Francis Mills of Grasonville, Md.; five grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Union Baptist Church, where friends may call two hours prior to service.

Burial will be the family plot in Chapel Cemetery.

Roland C. Larson, 82

REHOBOTH BEACH - Roland C. Larson of Rehoboth Beach died of respiratory failure Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, in the Harbor Healthcare Center, Lewes. He was 82.

Mr. Larson was born in 1916 in Chester, Pa., the son of the late Louis Larson and Mary Folley.

He worked at Darby Creek Joint Authority in Philadelphia as a sanitary treatment operator, retiring in 1971.

Mr. Larson moved to Rehoboth Beach in 1981 from Ridgely, Md.

He is survived by his wife, Eloise 'Lois' Gilman of Rehoboth Beach; two sons, Louis M. Larson of Reston, Va., and William Larson of Pickering, Ontario, Canada; and a sister, Margaret Minor of Zellwood, Fla.

Service and burial will be held privately at a later date.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the charity of your choice.

Alfred R. Pierce, 47

DOVER - Alfred R. Pierce of Dover, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, in Kent General Hospital. He was 47.

Mr. Pierce was born in Wilmington, and he was a lifelong resident of Delaware.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1973 as a supplyman, serving in Vietnam, where he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Mr. Pierce was employed by Marble Craft in Wilmington as a tile-setter helper for the past four years. He was previously employed by the Port of Wilmington as a forklift driver for two years.

He was a member of the Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen Union No. 1, located in Philadelphia.

Mr. Pierce enjoyed fishing, hunting, auto mechanics and bowling, and was best described as enjoying life.

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Margaret Pierce; four sons, David Zimmerman, Alfred Zimmerman and John Zimmerman, all of New Castle, and Donald Zimmerman of Wilmington; two daughters, Roxanne W. Horseman of Rehoboth Beach, and Barbara D. Pierce at home; four brothers, Leo J. Pierce Jr. of Wilmington, Arthur Pierce and Andrew Pierce, both of Millsboro, and Robert Pierce of Alaska; two sisters, Ruth Degal of Wilmington and Dorothy McHall of Connecticut; and ten grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Beeson Memorial Services of Christiana-Elkton, U.S. 40, Fox Run, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Mary Hicks, 70

DOVER - Mary Hicks of Dover, died Saturday, April 11, 1998, in Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla. She was 70.

Mrs. Hicks was born in 1927, the daughter of the late Rev. Fisher and Sarah Harris.

She was reared in a loving and caring home while being educated in the Frederica and Woodside schools.

Mrs. Hicks was employed by Swift & Co. in Felton for over 15 years before receiving training in Texas for employment as a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector, a position which she held over 21 years.

She was formerly a member of Bethuel Seventh-day Adventist Church in Dover.

Mrs. Hicks developed many long and lasting friendships over the years. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Eloise Dixon, and one brother, Bootsie Harris.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Lee Hicks; four children, Joan Biddle of Felton, Ellsworth Collins of Philadelphia, Benjamin Hicks of Walterboro, S.C., and Charles Hicks of Mission Hills, Calif.; five grandchildren, Cheryl Collins, whom they raised, Stacey Hicks, Robert Biddle, Charles Hicks Jr. and Sterling Hicks; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel Goldsborough of Frederica and Ella King of Camden, N.J.; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; two daughters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Service will be at noon Monday at St. James Union A.M.E. Church, Andrew Lake Road, Frederica, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Albert H. Ross, 80

MILFORD - Albert H. Ross of Milford, died of congestive heart failure Thursday, April 16, 1998, in Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 80.

Mr. Ross was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.

He was a millwright for General Foods Corp. in Dover for 32 years before retiring in 1983.

Mr. Ross was a member of the Milford Elks Lodge 2401, B.P.O.E., and of the Milford Moose Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Lorraine Ross, in 1981, and a grandson, Rodney J. Harrington, in 1994.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Robert K. Russell Sr. of Ellendale; a sister, Eva Paddock of Canada; a granddaughter, Amy Reed of Lincoln; and a great-grandson, Tyler Reed of Lincoln.

Service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford, where friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Monday.

Burial will be in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, U.S. 113, Frederica.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Rodney J. Harrington Scholarship Fund, c/o Milford High School, Milford, DE 19963.

Violet Beulah Huffer, 90

TOWNSEND - Violet Beulah Huffer of Townsend, formerly of Kennedyville, Md., died Thursday, April 16, 1998, in the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown, Md. She was 90.

Mrs. Huffer was a homemaker and had worked as a home nurse and companion during the 1970s and 1980s, taking care of the elderly.

She was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Townsend, the Kennedyville Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's Club, the Townsend Women's Club and the Lower New Castle County Republican Women's Club.

Mrs. Huffer was an avid gardener.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest F. Huffer, in 1969, and a daughter, Virginia Daniels, in 1996.

She is survived by two sons, Donald E. Huffer of Millington, Md., and Glenn E. Huffer of Laurel; a son-in-law, with whom she lived, Allen 'Dick' Daniels; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kennedyville Methodist Church, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Friends may also call from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, Main Street, Townsend.
