Jarred Daniel Smarte, 3 days

LAUREL - Jarred Daniel Smarte of Laurel died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, in A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, Wilmington. He was three days old.

Jarred was born at Christiana Hospital, Wilmington.

He is survived by his parents, Ricky Allen Smarte and Tanya Lynn Groton Smarte, both of Laurel; a brother, Justin Tyler Smarte, at home; his paternal grandparents, James A. Smarte and Mona Richards Smarte, both of Seaford; his maternal grandparents, Donald Groton and Linda Boyce Groton, both of Laurel; his paternal great-grandmother, Julia Richards of Seaford; and his maternal great-grandmother, Doris Boyce of Laurel.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Christ Evangelistic Church in Laurel, where friends may call prior to service.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Seaford.

Holcomb D. Bailey, 80

HARRINGTON - Holcomb D. Bailey of Harrington died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, in Courtland Manor Nursing Center. He was 80.

Mr. Bailey was born in 1918, in Jacksboro, Texas, the son of the late Chester A. Bailey and Eunice C. Bailey.

He was a rancher in San Angelo, Texas.

Mr. Bailey was a World War II veteran. He served in the U.S. Army, first in the Air Corps within the Army Air Forces until 1947, then in the Signal Corps, retiring in 1954, following service in the Korean conflict, as a chief warrant officer.

Mr. Bailey also was an honorary colonel in the Confederate Air Force.

He was an avid leather worker and saddle maker.

He was employed as a manager of the catalogue department with Chick's in Harrington, most recently.

Mr. Bailey had lived in Delaware for the past 11 years.

He is survived by a brother, Arthur Bailey Jr. of Rio Rancho, N.M.; and a sister, Chestalynn Patterson of Arlington, Texas.

Service will be noon Friday at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery Chapel, Bear.

Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Cemetery Columbarium, Bear.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the American Heart Association of Kent County, P.O. Box 1977, Dover, DE 19903.

Rosetta M. Chandler, 71

MILLSBORO - Rosetta M. Chandler of Millsboro died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, in Beebe Medical Center. She was 71.

Ms. Chandler was born in Frankford, the daughter of the late Raymond Rickards and Estella Rogers Rickards.

She was a homemaker.

Ms. Chandler was a member of the Indian River Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert G. Chandler, in 1990; a brother, Ronald Rickards, in 1995; and a son, Richard Chandler, in 1984.

She is survived by four sisters, Thelma Wells and Jean McCabe, both of Frankford, and Margaret Lynch of Selbyville, and Rosalie Furbush of Dagsboro.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services in Frankford, where friends may call one hour prior to service.

Burial will be in Carey's Cemetery, Frankford.

Milton Johnson, 62

LINCOLN - Milton Johnson of Lincoln died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, in Bayhealth Medical Center-Kent General Hospital, Dover.

Mr. Johnson was born in Accomac, Va., the son of the Cora Johnson of Atlantic, Va., and the late Russell Johnson.

He was a truck driver for many years. He recently retired from San Del Trucking, haven driven trucks hauling peppers for many years.

Mr. Johnson will be missed dearly by his loving family and friends.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Joyce Johnson of Lincoln; four sons, Milton Johnson Jr. of Lincoln, Vincent Sachell of Georgetown, Edward Taylor of Holly Hill, S.C., and Douglas McCray of Hartly; two daughters, Martha McCray of Camden-Wyoming and Connie Townsend of North Carolina; five brothers, Russell Johnson of Atlantic, Harvey Johnson of Dover, Harold Johnson of Atlantic, Ricky Johnson of Dover and Jerry Johnson of Wilmington; three sisters, Sharon Thomas, Grace Hill and Estelle Payton, all of Atlantic; two stepsons, Joseph Hill of Hartly and Jerrod Bradick of Lincoln; a stepdaughter, Dawn Renaie Weaver of Chincoteague, Va.; 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 13 step-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Highway, Harrington, with pastor Delores Williams of the Cathedral of Love Church, Lincoln, officiating.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 1977, Dover, DE 19903.

Pauline Brake, 78

GREENWOOD - Pauline Brake of Greenwood died of an abdominal arterial aneurysm Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in her home. She was 78.

Mrs. Brake was born April 2, 1921, in Cape Charles, Va., the daughter of the late Roy Hughes and Laura Morris Hughes Brown.

She did factory work and domestic work in the Greenwood area.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Brake.

She is survived by a son, Louis Laws of Greenwood; a daughter, Vernita Hughes of Syracuse, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 205 N. West St., Milford.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at Young's Funeral Home, Seaford.

Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Concord.

Jacqueline Emory Carter, 53

BEAR - Jacqueline Emory Carter of Bear died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, in her home. She was 53.

Mrs. Carter was a social worker for the state of Delaware for nine years.

She was a member of Maple Dale Country Club, Dover.

She is survived by three sons, Edward Allson, James Allson and Kenneth Allson, all of Dover; two daughters, Donella Wilkins of Greenwood and Inez Clements of Milford; three brothers, David Emory of Dover, Donald Emory of Wyoming and Danial Emory of Wyoming; a sister, Janie Griggs of Dover; and one grandchild.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Kay Conaway Delcher, 64

YORK, Pa. - Kay Conaway Delcher of York died of natural causes Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, in York Hospital. She was 64.

Mrs. Delcher was born April 28, 1934, in Pocomoke City, Md., the daughter of the late Wellington Conaway and Marion Prost Conaway.

She graduated from Pocomoke High School.

Mrs. Delcher married Charles D. Delcher Sept. 16, 1975.

She was a member of Christian Life Church, York, and of its intercessional prayer group and its Women that Win group, and taught Sunday school.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, John Bromley, Steve Bromley and George Bromley, all of Delaware; two daughters, Lisa Gandy of Seattle and Paula Delcher of York; and nine grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at John W. Keffer Funeral Home Inc., 2114 W. Market St., York, with the Rev. Barry A. Falkenstine officiating.

Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday and 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, York.

The family suggest memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association, 5020 Ritter Road, Suite 106, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; or to the American Heart Association, 2997 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion, PA 17356.

Elsie M. Metheny, 88

WYOMING - Elsie M. Metheny of Wyoming died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, in the Methodist Manor House, Seaford. She was 88.

Ms. Metheny was born in Wyoming, the daughter of the late John Morton Melvin and Clara Hutchison Melvin.

She was a homemaker.

Ms. Metheny was a member of the Adult Fellowship of her church, and a member of the Wyoming United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, William P. Metheny Sr., in 1977; and a son, Eugene Metheny, in 1996.

She is survived by two sons, William P. Metheny Jr. of Stafford, Va., and Dr. Robert M. Metheny of La Plata, Md.; a daughter, Carole Campbell of Bloomsburg, Pa.; a brother, Clifton D. Melvin of Hartly; a daughter-in-law, Marion Metheny of Dover; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three nieces; and a nephew.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wyoming U.M. Church in Wyoming, where friends may call one hour prior to service.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Benevolence Fund, Methodist Manor House, 1001 Middleford Road, Seaford, DE 19973.

William Edward Robb Sr., 83

CAMDEN - William Edward Robb Sr. of Camden died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998, in his home. He was 83.

Mr. Robb was born Nov. 20, 1914, in Henderson, Md., the son of the late Thomas Robb and Mamie Dukes Robb.

He was a farmer.

He also was an inspector for the state Department of Agriculture, retiring in 1980.

Mr. Robb was a member of the Wyoming United Methodist Church, a member of its Adult Fellowship, a past president and member of the Caesar Rodney Ruritan Club, a member of the Delaware State Farm Bureau and a member of the Capitol Grange.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Marie E. Robb, in 1997; and a sister, Mary Roden.

He is survived by a son, William E. Robb Jr., and his wife, Nancy, both of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; two daughers, Anna Marie Glaus, and her husband, Gordon, both of Greensburg, Pa., and Norma Jean Courtney, and her husband, Carlton, both of Dover; a brother, T. Dukes Robb of Harrington; a brother-in-law, Richard Roden of Henderson.; eight grandchildren, Michael Courtney, Garry Courtney, Jeff Courtney, Donna Fugate, Carolyn Wildrick, Thomas Robb, Sonja Belville and Deborah Glaus; and five great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Pippin Funeral Home in Wyoming, where friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be sent to the Wyoming United Methodist Church or to the Caesar Rodney Ruritan Club.

Hazel M. Elliott, 94

LAUREL - Hazel M. Elliott of Laurel died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998, in Harrison House, Georgetown. She was 94.

Ms. Elliott was born in Bethel, the daughter of the late Augustus Marine and Katie Marine.

She worked as a lab technician for the E. I. DuPont Co. in Seaford for 25 years, retiring in 1968.

Ms. Elliott was a member of the Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Seaford, and a member of the Laurel Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Elliott of Laurel and Margie Wells of Wilmington; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Short Funeral Home in Laurel, where friends may call one hour prior to service.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel.
