Fred Walter Bryant

Funeral services for Fred Walter Bryant, 65, of Dover, were held Monday, July 2, in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover. Mr. Bryant died Sunday, June 24, 2007, in Green Valley Nursing Home, Dover.

Mr. Bryant was born May 17, 1942, in Cordova, Md., son Anna Perry, now of Dover, and the late Andrew Bryant.

He received his education at Robert Moton High School, Easton, Md.

He worked as a farmhand for the better part of his life.

Mr. Bryant loved to go fishing at any opportunity; it was his one and only relaxing hobby.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Bryant is survived by four sons, Fred E. Bryant of Dover, Derrell Collins, Fred Collins and Bruce Bryant, all of Maryland; and a daughter, Desi Marie Bryant of Baltimore.

He also is survived by a special friend, Bessie Wiggins of Dover; four sisters, Ina Sanders of Dover, Doris and Willie Thurman of Newark, Rosella Bryant of Dover, Sadie Forsythe of Star, Md.; a close friend, Abraham Ramos of Dover; an uncle and aunt, Charles Sr. and Lillian Jackson of Dover; an aunt, Rosella Jackson of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Interment was in Whatcoat Cemetery, Dover.

Mary Lee Crenshaw

Funeral services for Mary Lee Crenshaw, 91, will be held Thursday, July 5, in Boone Wells Funeral Home, Greenville, Miss. Mrs. Crenshaw died Thursday, June 28, 2007, in Westminster Health Village, Dover.

Mrs. Crenshaw was born Feb. 25, 1916, in Lepanto, Ark., daughter of the late Lafayette Madison Bow and Maggie Sewell Bow.

She worked as a maternity ward nurse’s aide in Greenville for 40 years. She enjoyed embroidering and gardening.

Mrs. Crenshaw loved animals, especially her cats. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church, Greenville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Lee Crenshaw, in 1980; a son, James P. Crenshaw, in 1994; and a sister, Geneva Terry.

Mrs. Crenshaw is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Shirley M. and Matthew Spinella, of Dover and Teresa Crenshaw and Jack Foley of Dover; and a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas J. and Faith Crenshaw, of Broken Arrow, Okla.

She also is survived by a granddaughter, Jere Lynne Chaffee; a great-grandson, Christopher Chaffee; grandson John Zatlokovicz Jr. and his wife, Debra; great-grandson John Zatlokovicz III; great-grandson James Paul Zatlokovicz of Dover; granddaughter Tammy Kowalski and her husband, Nathan; great-granddaughters Jessica and Grace Kowalski of Hawaii; granddaughter Kim McLaughlin and her husband, Derek; great-grandsons Brian and Brett McLaughlin; great-granddaughter Bailey McLaughlin of Broken Arrow; grandson Thomas Crenshaw Jr. and his wife, Kelly; great-grandchildren T.J. III and Gabby Crenshaw of Texas; granddaughter Laura Hirsch and her husband, Henry; great-grandsons Christian Marvel of Silver Spring, Md., and Michael Spinella and his wife, Leslie; great-granddaughters Angela and Rachel Spinella; great-great-grandson Sebastiano of Delaware City; granddaughter Tracy Hynes and her husband, Pat; great-grandchildren Lindsey and Andrew Hynes of Lewes; and grandson Scott Spinella and his wife, Cathy, of Dover.

Interment will be in Greenville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Crenshaw’s name may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or Westminster Health Village, 1175 McKee Road, Dover, DE 19904; or a charity of choice.

Edwin Carleton Dill

Funeral services for Edwin Carleton Dill, 66, of Dover, will be held at noon Friday, July 6, in the Dover Fire Department station, 103 S. Governors Ave., Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier. Friends and firemen may gather from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus St., Dover. Mr. Dill died Thursday, June 28, 2007, in his home.

Mr. Dill was the son of the late Edwin D. Dill, who died in 1995, and of Helen Melvin Dill, who died in 1999.

Mr. Dill served in the Army National Guard.

He retired after a 35-year career as an insurance agent for Home Beneficial and American General. He enjoyed playing softball, bowling, working outdoors and going to firemen’s conventions.

Mr. Dill was a lifetime member of the Camden-Wyoming Fire Co. and the Robbins Hose Co. No. 1 Inc., now known as Dover Fire Department. Joining Robbins Hose in 1969, he held many administrative offices, including trustee, member of board of directors, vice president and president, from 1990 to 1992. He was chairman of the committee restoring Engine 8, a 1954 Mack, and served on numerous truck committees. He represented the Dover Fire Department on county and state levels as a delegate. He also was a member of Camden-Wyoming Moose Lodge.

Mr. Dill is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sara Johnson Dill of Dover; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Diane Snyder Dill of Dover; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Dill of Dover.

Interment with full firemen’s honors will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Dover Fire Department, 103 S. Governors Ave., Dover, DE 19904.

Betty L. ‘Bootsie’ Durham

Funeral services for Betty L. “Bootsie” Durham, 67, of Dover, were held Monday, July 2, in the Immanuel United Methodist Church, Cheswold. Mrs. Durham died Thursday, June 28, 2007, at home, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Durham was born Aug. 11, 1939, in Bridgeton, N.J., daughter of the late Samuel and Margaret Loatman.

She worked with W.L. Wheatley of Clayton and transferred to Campbell Soup Co. of Chestertown, Md. Following Campbell Soup she worked for Cocamacamo Transportation (Reichold Chemical Transportation), where she retired.

Mrs. Durham became a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church Dec. 24, 2006.

She enjoyed crocheting, reading, cooking, traveling, going to craft shows and collecting “Jan Hagara” figurines and dolls.

Her biggest joy was spending time with her family. She was especially close to her sister, Beatrice, and her husband, Jim Munson, who were traveling partners with her and her husband.

Mrs. Durham is survived by her husband of 43 years, Albert Durham Sr. of Dover; and four children and the spouses of three, Albert II and Heike Durham of Dover, Alberta Durham of Dover, Kathy and Vernon Hagan of Crosby, Texas, and Minous “Mick” and Rosemary Durham of Hartly.

She also is survived by eight grandchildren, Eric Durham and his fiancée, Leslie Lorah, Christina Hagan and her fiancée, Zeb Ewell, Jennifer Hagan, Samantha Hagan, Trey Hagan, Brandon Durham, Kamron Darling and Aaron Durham; a great-grandchild, Aidan Matthew; three sisters, Beatrice Munson, Isabel Durham of Bridgeton, N.J. and Anna Coker of Dover.

Interment was in the Immanuel UMC cemetery.

Calver Hudson Everett

Funeral services for Calver Hudson Everett, 95, formerly of the Dover area, were held Friday, June 29, in the Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming. Mr. Everett died Monday, June 25, 2007, in Milford.

Mr. Everett was born Nov. 5, 1911, in Chesapeake City, Md., son of the late Hiram Everett and Ann Elizabeth Hudson Everett.

He was one of the Greatest Generation, having been born before automobiles were readily available and travel was by horse and buggy, and being raised in a home with no electricity or plumbing. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and received his first Bible from his teacher in 1924. He married during the Great Depression and served as a U.S. Army Air Forces civilian aircraft observer during World War II.

In 1976 at the age of 62, Mr. Everett retired from the Capital School District and moved to Florida with his wife. They lived in St. Petersburg for many years before returning to Delaware. He worked for many years for Diamond State Dairies as a delivery driver and also for a local plumbing business.

He enjoyed his retirement with his family and friends and was an avid reader of history. The Everetts enjoyed boating, and spent many years cruising on the Chester River in Maryland on their boat, the Nancy J. One of his greatest accomplishments was hand building a wooden sailboat at his home in Dover.

Mr. Everett was a life member of the Capitol Grange and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Nancy J. Everett; and two sisters, Yola Dukes and Florence Argo.

Mr. Everett is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Ann and Francis Nichols of Dover; a sister, Sarah Pienkowski of Wilmington; three grandsons and their wives, Francis Jr. and Diana Nichols of Chestertown, Md.; Jon and Melanie Nichols, and Michael and Carole Nichols, all of Dover.

He also is survived by six great-grandchildren, Jonny Nichols and his wife, Susan, Robert Nichols and his wife Ariane, and Matthew Nichols, all of Dover, Heather Nichols of Chestertown, and Tina and Justin Nichols of Dover; a great-great-grandson, Jon Wesley Nichols of Dover.

Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Everett’s name may be sent to the Wyoming United Methodist Church Building Fund, 112 Broad St., Wyoming, DE 19934.

Barbara Ann German

Funeral services for Barbara Ann German, 67, of Magnolia, were held Saturday, June 30, in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Milford. Ms. German died Tuesday, June 26, 2007, in her home surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. German was born Aug. 20, 1939, in Louisville, Ky., daughter of the late Paul and Anna Leona Helm.

She enjoyed playing bingo, spades and many computer games. Her favorite was frequent visits to Midway Slots in Harrington.

Ms. German is survived by two brothers, John Helm of Illinois and Charles Helm of California; a devoted husband of 46 years, Roy W. German; four loving children, Frederick German, Paul German, both of Louisville, William German and Christina German of Magnolia; a special son, Sterling Nelson of Louisville; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.

Interment was in Community Cemetery, Milford.

William O. Glanden

Graveside services for William O. Glanden, 83, of Frederica, were held Monday, July 2, in the Barratt’s Chapel Cemetery, near Frederica. Mr. Glanden died Thursday, June 28, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.

Mr. Glandon was born in Willow Grove, son of the late Herbert and Mary Ann Glanden.

He served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Air Army Forces during World War II.

Mr. Glanden, a farmer, drove for the Delaware Association for the Blind for more than 40 years. Even after retirement, he continued to drive for them.

In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening. He also enjoyed micro-midget racing, modified racing and horse racing. He was a jack of all trades who loved to tinker. He was very inventive, modified many objects and could do most anything.

Mr. Glanden was a loving family man who enjoyed life and lived to tease and joke with his family and close friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Virginia Glanden of Frederica; a son and daughter-in-law, William H. and Carolyn Glanden of Greenwood; two daughters and a son-in-law, Virginia L. Crabtree of Stevenson, Ala., Susan A. and David States of Wilmington; a brother, Dawson Glanden of Dover; a sister, Mildred "Millie" Glanden of Stewart, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Beverly Harmon, 43

DOVER - Beverly Harmon of Dover died of heart failure Sunday, Sept. 6, 1997, in Kent General Hospital. She was 43.

Ms. Harmon was born March 4, 1955, in Milford.

She was a child-care worker in Dover.

She is survived by a son, Brian Harmon of Dover; a daughter, Helen Harmon of Millsboro; her mother, Annie Payne of Dover; three brothers, Arnold Harmon of Milford, Atlas Payne of Milton and Kevin Payne of Georgetown; three sisters, Sherita Cannon of Arlington, Va., Deborah Payne of Wilmington and Priscilla Payne of Dover; five grandchildren; aunts; uncles; cousins; and other relatives and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Zion AME Church, Ellendale, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Arrangements by Young's Funeral Homes, 309 North St., Milford.

Genevieve Ruth Potts, 70

NEW CASTLE - Genevieve Ruth Potts of New Castle, formerly of Sudlersville, Md., and Smyrna, died of heart failure Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, in Arbors at New Castle Nursing Home. She was 70.

Ms. Potts was born in Sudlersville, the daughter of the late William Edward and Julie Irene Jeffers Bratcher.

She was educated in the Queen Anne's County, Md., school system.

During her working career, she had been employed as a cook at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., and later went to work as a cook in the family restaurant at Dudley Corners, Md. Her last place of employment was for Metal Masters in Smyrna, where she operated a machine making latches.

Ms. Potts and her late husband raised a family of two.

In her spare time, she enjoyed doing handcrafts and working in her garden, where she raised all kinds of flowers. She was very family-oriented and enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren.

Ms. Potts was a member of Jeffers Chapel, where she participated in their homecoming celebrations, and a member of St. Daniel's in Barclay, Md.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 14 years, Raymond Thomas Potts, in 1964; and by a daughter, Genevieve Diane Potts, in 1970.

She is survived by a daughter, Denise Potts McGhee, and Mrs. McGhee's husband, Daniel, of New Castle; four brothers, Stanford Bratcher of Sudlersville, and Windfield Bratcher, Terry Bratcher and George Bratcher, all of Wilmington; three sisters, Emily Orr of Trenton, N.J., and Marion Kennedy and Sylvia Wilmore, both of Sudlersville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, at Community Baptist Church, Barclay, where friends may call two hours prior to the service. The Rev. William Ward will officiate.

Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Pondtown, Md.

Harvey A. Hudson, 93

BETHANY BEACH - Harvey A. Hudson of Bethany Beach died of heart failure Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, in Beebe Medical Center. He was 93.

Mr. Hudson was born in Ocean View, the son of the late Will Hudson and Annabell Mitchell Hudson.

As a young man, he was a manger for American Stores, and opened the first American Stores in Salisbury, Md.; Ocean City, Md.; and Chincoteague, Va.

Later, as a manager for poultry farms, he became interested in poultry diseases and studied diseases at Vineland Laboratories in Vineland, N.J., after which he was employed by Towsends Inc. of Millsboro until his retirement at age 75.

Mr. Hudson was a member of Mariner's Bethel U.M. Church of Ocean View.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna, in 1969; and by a son, Raymond Hudson.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lois J. Hudson; a son, George Hudson of Dagsboro; a granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mariner's Bethel Cemetery, Ocean View.

Friends may call 8:30-9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, West Avenue, Ocean View.

Instead of flower, the family suggest contributions made in his memory to the Building Fund of Mariner's U.M. Church in Ocean View.
