David D. Griffin, 77, of Bradenton, died Aug. 24, 2002, in Bradenton.
A visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Brown & Sons Funeral Home, 5624 26th St. W. A service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A committal service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Pastors Herb McMillan and Glen Gardner will be officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, Attn. Memorials, P.O. Box 21475, St. Petersburg, Fla. 33742.
Born in Evansville, Ind., Mr. Griffin came to Manatee County from Hanna City, Ill., in 1984. He attended White Chapel United Methodist Church in Glasford, Ill. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He belonged to International Union of Operating Engineers (AFL-CIO) Local No. 649 in Peoria, Ill.
Survivors include his fiancee, Ruth Healey; two daughters, Sally J. Tempro and Susan, both of Bradenton; two sons, Roger, of Sugar Grove, Ill., and Thomas, of Pekin, Ill.; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Michael J., "Mike" Keffer Sr., Manatee County
Michael J. "Mike" Keffer Sr., 46, of Manatee County, died Aug. 25, 2002, in Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, 720 Manatee Ave. W. A service for friends will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Skyway Memorial Gardens in Palmetto. Memorial contributions may be made to H. Lee Moffitt Center, c/o Foundation, 12902 Magnolia Drive, Tampa, Fla. 33612, or Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
Born in Bradenton, Mr. Keffer was a lifelong resident of Manatee County. He worked as a field superintendent with Siesta Key Utilities for 27 years. He was Protestant.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel, and a daughter, Michelle, both of Palmetto; and a son, Michael J. Jr., of Bradenton.

Patrick J. Bowen, Parrish
Patrick J. Bowen, 61, of Parrish, died Aug. 25, 2002, in his home.
A memorial service will be Sept. 6 at St. Francis X. Cabrini Church, 12001 69th St. E., Parrish. Inurnment will be at the church. Memorial donations may be sent to St. Francis X Cabrini Church, 12001 69th St. E., Parrish, Fla. 34219.
Born in Wyandotte, Mich., Mr. Bowen came to Manatee County from Muncie, Ind., in 1999. He served in the U.S. Army. He attended St. Francis X. Cabrini Church.
Survivors include his wife, Theresa; three daughters, Debra Davis of Bunker Hill, Ind.; Kelly, of Anderson, Ind.; and Susan Brumley, of Tampa; a son, Patrick Jr., of Muncie; a sister, Carolyn Taylor of Naples; a brother, James J., of Naples; and five grandchildren.

Charles Richard, "Dick" Mallett, Bradenton
Charles Richard "Dick" Mallett, 78, of Bradenton, died Aug. 25, 2002, in Blake Medical Center.
A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Temple Beth El, 2209 75th St. W. American Legion Kirby Stewart Post No. 24 will conduct military honors at the temple. Burial will be at Skyway Memorial Gardens in Palmetto. Following graveside services, the family will observe Shiva through Friday at sundown at the residence. Rabbi Barbara Aiello and Cantor Anna Federick will be officiating. Toale Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth El Religious School, 2209 75th St. W., Bradenton, Fla. 34209.
Born in New York City, Mr. Mallett came to Manatee County from Newport, R.I., about 13 years ago. He retired as an industrial engineer. He was a member of Temple Beth El. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He belonged to the Brotherhood at Temple Beth El and the Astronomy Club of Bradenton.
Survivors include his wife, Nathalie E.; a daughter, Elizabeth Jane of Vineland, N.J.; two sons, Mitchell C. of Bradenton and Donald B. of Fort Worth; and five grandchildren.

Nathan Kulbersh, Bradenton
Nathan Kulbersh, 84, of Bradenton, died Aug. 26, 2002, in Blake Medical Center.
A funeral service will be 9 a.m. today at Temple Beth El, 2209 75th St. W., with Rabbi Barbara Aiello and Cantor Anna Federick officiating. Burial will be at Temple Beth Sholom Cemetery in Sarasota. Following the burial the family will observe Shiva through Thursday evening at the residence. Toale Brothers Funeral Home South Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth El (Etz Chaim Fund), 2209 75th St. W., Bradenton, Fla. 34209.
Born in Atlanta, Mr. Kulbersh came to Manatee County from New Haven, Conn., in 1987. He retired as chief engineer with the hand tool division of Sargent and Co. in New Haven, Conn. He was a member of Temple Beth El, MIT Alumni Association, Boston Latin School and Bnai Jacob Temple in Woodbridge, Conn.
Survivors include three sons, Richard, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Michael M., of Bradenton, and Elliot S., of Southfield, Mich.; a sister, Sophie Singal of Milwaukee; a brother, Benjamin, of Israel; and four grandchildren.

Fern V. Hall, Lake Worth and formerly of Bradenton
Fern V. Hall, 91, of Lake Worth and formerly of Bradenton, died Aug. 25, 2002, in Bishop Gray Inn in Lake Worth.
A visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Friday at Shannon Funeral Home Town Chapel, 1015 14th St. W., Bradenton. A service is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the funeral home. the Rev. Richard Nussel and the Rev. Herb Loomis will be officiating. Burial will be held in private. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 603 11th St. W., Bradenton, Fla. 34205.
Born in Central City, Ky., Mrs. Hall came to Manatee County in 1930. She was a homemaker. She attended First United Methodist Church of Bradenton. She was a longtime member of the church's Methodist Women's Club.
Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Cates of Wellington; two sons, Dr. Royce O., of Bradenton and Tanzania, Africa; and Anthony V., of Atlanta; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a great great-grandchild.

Mary F. Hays, Ellenton
Mary F. Hays, 82, of Ellenton, died Aug. 25, 2002, in Manatee Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Westminster Asbury, the Towers. Cremation will be private. Robarts Funeral Home in Sarasota is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 4151 37th St. E., Palmetto, Fla. 34221.
Born in Louisville, Mrs. Hays came to Manatee County from Nashville in 1990. She was a former real estate saleswoman. She attended St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Sister Leslie of Ellenton, and Donna J. of Bradenton.

Richard Urban Furlong, Bradenton
Richard Urban Furlong, 90, of Bradenton, died Aug. 24, 2002, in Blake Medical Center.
A memorial mass will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 3100 26th St. W., with Fr. James Archambault officiating. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes, 43rd Street Chapel, is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Westside Club of Neighborly Senior Services, 5512 26th St. W., Bradenton, Fla. 34207 or Westminster Woods, 5700 24th St. E., Bradenton, Fla. 34203.
Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Furlong came to Manatee County from Meshoppen, Pa., in 1995. He retired as vice president, insurance agent and fire inspector for Pye Karr Ambler Insurance Co. in Jenkintown, Pa. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Diane M. and Patricia A. Lakey, both of Bradenton; two sons, Richard F., of North Wales, Pa., and Thomas T., of Roaring Springs, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

Laura E. Bedell, Bradenton
Laura E. Bedell, 84, of Bradenton, died July 30, 2002, in Casa Mora Rehabilitation and Extended Care.
Memorial Mass will be at a later date. Brown and Sons Funeral Homes, 26th Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238.
Born in Schenectady, N.Y., Mrs. Bedell came to Manatee County from there in 1954. She retired as a bank teller. She attended Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Bradenton.
Survivors include two daughters, Joan M. Curto and Dawn Ausborn, both of Bradenton; a son, Harry J., of Bradenton; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Robert Lee Crawford, Palmetto
Robert Lee Crawford, 57, of Palmetto, died July 25, 2002, in Mariner Health of Palmetto.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday at Westside Funeral Home, 704 11th St. W., Palmetto, and 9-11 a.m. Saturday at Saint James African Methodist Episcopal Church, 2315 Fifth Ave. Drive E., Palmetto. Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. J.C. Sanders officiating. Burial will be in Mansion Memorial Park in Ellenton.
Born in Shamrock, Mr. Crawford came to Manatee County from Copeland in 1953. He was employed at Bradley Tire Co. for many years. He was Methodist.
Survivors include three sons, Marcus, Reggie, and Robert Jr., all of Palmetto; a sister, Dannie Richardson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four brothers, Lewis, Johnny, Henry, and Ed, all of Palmetto; and two grandchildren.

Catherine M. Quirk Goodwin, Bradenton
Catherine M. Quirk Goodwin, 80, of Bradenton, died July 29, 2002, in Bradenton Health Care.
Memorial service will be in Falmouth, Mass., at a later date. Inurnment will be in Bourne National Cemetery in Bourne, Mass. National Cremation Society, Sarasota Chapter, is in charge of cremation arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to The Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 W. 168th St., New York, N.Y. 10032.
Born in Weymouth, Mass., Mrs. Goodwin came to Manatee County from Falmouth in 1986. She retired as an elementary school teacher from the Weymouth school system. She was a member of Saint Colmans Catholic Church in Brockton, Mass.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Clifton A. Goodwin; three daughters, Ann Wigglesworth of Belmont, Mass., Jane Cappiello of Brockton and Susan McDermott of North Falmouth; two sons, Thomas, of Brookline, Mass., and John, of Hanover, Mass.; a sister, Helen Johnson of Kingston, Mass.; two brothers, Edward Quirk of Hanover and John Quirk of Onset, Mass.; and nine grandchildren.

William A. Malthaner, Kennett Square, Pa.
William A. Malthaner, 87, of Kennett Square, Pa., formerly of Bradenton, died July 24, 2002, in Linden Hall Nursing Home in Kennett Square.
Graveside service was at Mendham Cemetery in Mendham, N.J., at an earlier date. Foulk Funeral Home Inc., West Grove, Pa., is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, 101 E. Market St., West Chester, Pa. 19380.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Malthaner came to Manatee County in 1976. He retired in 1976 as an electrical engineer from AT&T Bell Labs after 39 years of service. He was a member of Church on the Rock in Palmetto. He was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Survivors include two sons, John, of Landenberg, Pa., and Jim Kane of Holmdel, N.J.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
