William Harman, 66, Phosphate Industry

LAKELAND -- Longtime Polk County resident William "Bill" Harman Jr. of Mulberry died of complications from diabetes Saturday (Aug. 20, 2005) at Lake Morton Plaza. He was 66.

Born May 29, 1939, in Washington, D.C., he moved to Lakeland in the early 1950s as a junior high school student. Graduating from Lakeland High School in 1957, he played tackle position on the football team. Later, he returned to his alma mater to referee some of the varsity and junior varsity football games.

"He used to say, `When the game was over, 50 percent of the people were happy with his decisions, and the other 50 percent were just plain mad, ' " said his wife, Joyce Harman.

Mr. Harman was a referee for little league, high school and some semi-pro football games for 15 years.

"He really missed his time when he wasn't (refereeing), " his wife said.

Shortly after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served until 1962.

He received a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Auburn University in 1966. In his family, he was the second of three generations of William Harmans to attend Auburn University.

He worked in the phosphate industry until his retirement.

He was a member of Highland Park Church of the Nazarene.

Mr. Harman is survived by his wife, Joyce Harman, Mulberry; daughter, Rebecca Cariaga, Lakeland; sons, William Harman III, Lakeland, and James Harman, Greer, S.C.; and six grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Florida Inc., 1 Davis Blvd., Tampa, FL 33606, and the American Diabetes Association, 1101 N. Lake Destiny Rd., Suite 415, Maitland, FL 32751.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Park Church of the Nazarene.

ALAN FRIEDMAN, 67

Insurance

LAKELAND -- Mr. Alan Kirk Friedman of Lakeland died of cancer Sunday (Aug. 14, 2005) at his home. He was 67.

He was born on Oct. 27, 1937, in San Diego, Calif., and moved to Lakeland in 1999 from Rochester, N.Y. He worked for many years in the commercial insurance industry. He was a member of the Stardust Dance Center in Plant City. He was Jewish.

Mr. Friedman is survived by his wife, Judi Friedman, Lakeland, daughters, Elyse Matson, San Diego, and Kim Foreman, Canandaigua, N.Y.; sons, Michael Friedman and Russell Friedman, both of San Diego; brother, Marc Friedman, San Diego; and five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 115. S. Missouri Ave., Suite 500, Lakeland, 33805.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Schalamar Creek Golf and Country Club.

GRACIE PITTS, 47

WINTER HAVEN -- Funeral services for Ms. Gracie Pitts of Winter Haven, who died Aug. 11, 2005, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church, 200 Ave. R. N.W. Visitation will be on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in Rolling Hills Cemetery.

BETTY BENNETT, 73
Dry Cleaner

LAKELAND -- Mrs. Betty S. Bennett of Lakeland died Monday (Aug. 22, 2005) of cancer. She was 73.

Born April 3, 1932, in Lake Moore, Ohio, Mrs. Bennett moved here in 1993 from Ohio. She was a retired owner of a dry cleaning business.

Mrs. Bennett is survived by her husband, Richard Bennett; daughter, Linda Kory, Tallmadge, Ohio; son, Dennis Sears, Wadsworth, Ohio; stepdaughters, Cynthia Craze and Kathleen Eup, both of Akron, Ohio; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, Auburndale.

NORMAN YOUNG, 87

Assistant Advertising Manager

DAVENPORT -- Mr. Norman Young of Davenport died of heart failure Aug. 17, 2005, in Davenport. He was 87.

Born in Springfield, Mass., on June 9, 1918, Mr. Young came to Davenport from St. Petersburg several years ago. He was a retired assistant advertising manager for Heublein Inc. of Hartford, Conn. He also taught advertising classes at Hartford and Western New England colleges. He received his master's degree from Boston University. He served aboard the USS Tisdale in the Pacific during World War II. He was an Episcopalian and served at St. Peters and St. Matthews Episcopal churches in St. Petersburg.

Mr. Young is survived by his wife, Dorcas Young; daughter, Koarin Foss, St. Petersburg; one grandson.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Sunday in the chapel at the Crossroads Health Center in Davenport.

ANNA SPELL, 78

Homemaker

WINTER GARDEN -- Mrs. Anna A. Huggins Spell of Winter Garden, formerly of Winter Haven, died of kidney failure Saturday (Aug. 27, 2005) at Health Central Park Nursing Home in Winter Garden. She was 78.

Born in Holley, N.Y., on Dec. 12, 1926, she lived in Winter Haven before moving to Winter Garden 15 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a Catholic.

Mrs. Spell was preceded in death by her husband, McElroy Huggins. She is survived by her daughter, Rose Ann Riley, Winter Garden; sons, Paul David Huggins, Ronald C. Huggins, Mark Huggins, all of Dundee, Lewis Charles Huggins, Patrick Huggins, both of West Palm Beach, James Huggins, Ocala; sisters, Florence Passarall, Viola Starkeweather, both of Batavia, N.Y., Lucy Strollo, Port St. Lucie; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 this evening at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, 2425 West Havendale Blvd., Winter Haven. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Park.

FRED WILBER, 87

Truck Driver

BABSON PARK -- Mr. Fred H. Wilber of Babson Park died of heart failure Aug. 18, 2005, at home. He was 87.

Born in Scranton, Pa., on Sept. 21, 1917, he came to Babson Park from Chenango Bridge, N.Y. He was a retired truck driver for Swift and Co. in Hallstead. He was a member of Nimmonsburg United Methodist Church.

Mr. Wilber was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor Thatcher Wilber. He is survived by his wife, Norma Wilber; daughters, Nina Pierson, Nicholson, Pa., Sandy Wilber Granick, Tunkhannock, Pa.; stepsons, Chris Withers, Richmond, Va., Mark Withers, California; brothers, Bill Wilber, Montrose, Pa., Stan Wilber, Philadelphia; sister, Ruth Brown, Great Bend, Pa.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nimmonsburg United Methodist Church memorial fund, 918 Upper Front St., Binghamton, NY 13905.
