Joe Enzor, 78, Citrus Grower

WINTER HAVEN -- Mr. Joe Kendrie Enzor Jr., the grandson of the late Ben Hill Griffin and a third generation citrus grower, died of cancer Monday (Aug. 16, 2004) at home. He was 78.

"Everyone knew that he loved God's good earth, " said Donna H. Enzor, his wife of 26 years, noting that a preacher once described him as a man who would leave this earth better than he found it.

"He loved to grow things. We've always had animals. Some of them friends would give us and some he would pick up along the roadway. He had a tremendous passion for God's creatures."

Born in Lake Wales on Dec. 4, 1925, Mr. Enzor graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in agriculture and citrus. He was an Army veteran of World War II. While serving in India, he bonded with a baby tiger who was not yet weaned and had lost its mother. Following the war, he gave the tiger, which he named "Sugar, " to the Calcutta Zoo.

"The best way to describe him was his kindness, decency and gentleness toward mankind, " his wife said.

His career in the citrus industry started at the University of Florida Citrus Experiment Station in Lake Alfred and took root in the many groves he owned.

Mr. Enzor was an avid Florida Gators fan and saltwater fisherman. He also enjoyed growing orchids, a passion he developed in high school.

"We have over 300 orchids right here at the house, " Donna Enzor said of her husband, who was a member of the American Orchid Society and the Ridge Orchid Society of Bartow. "He designed an orchid tank that is self-contained and had it built to his own specifications. Some of his friends refer to it as the `Club Med' of orchids." Mr. Enzor was a Boy Scout leader in Winter Haven and a member of the Elks Lodge of Winter Haven, the Florida Gator Boosters Club and the University of Florida Alumni Association. He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church of Winter Haven.
