John Manly Pollard Sr.
WILMINGTON, N.C. - John Manly Pollard Sr. of Wilmington, N.C., died Monday, December 16, 2002, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Simpsonville, S.C., on October 22, 1915, the son of the late, John Andrew and Daisy Mayfield Pollard.
Mr. Pollard was a long time member of Grace United Methodist Church, a member of the Crusader's Sunday School Class, a life member of the United Methodist Men, and was Layman of the year in 1990, and was a after school tutor at the church. He was a longtime volunteer for Mother Hubbard's Cubbard, a veteran of the United States Navy during WW II, a graduate of Furman University. He managed Fertilizer Manufacturing Plants for forty-two years starting with Virginia Carolina Chemical Company.
Surviving are his loving family, his wife of sixty-four years, Mary Elizabeth O'Donnell Pollard of the home; three sons, Fred D. Pollard and wife, Charlotte of Taylors, S.C., John Manly Pollard Jr. and wife, Caroline and Thomas C. Pollard and wife, Brooke Lamson, both of Wilmington, N.C.; a sister, Mildred Holcomb of Greenville, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Nathan Pollard, Nancy McGinnis, John M. Pollard III, Amy Pollard, Amanda Pollard, Elizabeth Pollard, and Alice Pollard; one great-grandchild, Michael McGinnis; many nieces and nephews and friends.
"Manly was a good man. Everyone who knew him benefited from his goodness."
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bob Bauman. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Mother Hubbard's Cubbard, c/o Grace United Methodist Church, 401 Grace Street, Wilmington, N.C. 28401.

Michael O'Neal Brown
ALBANY - Pastor Michael O'Neal Brown, 43, of 150 Five Oaks Drive, Covington, died Thursday, December 12, 2002, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gethesemane Worship Center with interment in Riverside Cemetery.
A native of Morgan County, Pastor Brown moved to Albany in 1977. He was a graduate of both Albany State University and Georgia College and State University. While matriculating at Albany State (College) University, he met and married Paula McLaughlin and their union produced two daughters, Paulette and Erica. He later met and married LeDeadra Sullivan and their union produced two children, Michael Joshua and BreAnnah.
He was employed as a special education teacher by the Newton County School System in Covington, GA. He was founder and senior pastor of Kingdom Life Ministries.
In addition to the family mentioned, survivors include his father and step mother, Pastor George C. Brown Sr. and (Gloria); seven brothers, George Brown Jr. (Doris), Melvin Brown Sr. (Maurice), James Brown, William Brown (Nancy), Frankie Brown (Patricia), Lonnie Brown (Jennie), and Robert Brown (Duana); four sisters, Pastor Stella Head (Samuel Sr.), Bertha Harris (Charlie Sr.), Pastor Mary Proby-Gray and Lenita Franklin (Tracy); two uncles; two aunts; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and the Christian Community.

ALBANY - The funeral service of Devon Butler, 54, of 5610 Florida Short Route, Dawson, who died Thursday, December 19, 2002, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Johnny Roberts and the Rev. Gerald Ross will officiate. Interment will follow in Leary City Cemetery. Rhett Butler, Hunter Butler, Don Butler, Stan Roberts, Damon Roberts and Todd Winder will serve as pallbearers.
A native and life long residence of Albany, Mr. Butler was a Baptist and had been employed with Oxford Construction Company as asphalt manager for the past twenty five years.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Butler of Dawson; his mother, Loraine Butler of Dawson; a sister, Dinah Gay of Albany; three brothers, Donnie Butler and Tony Butler, both of Albany and Johnny Butler of Jackson, MO; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Mathews Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorials to the American Cancer Society, Dougherty-Lee Unit, 1507 N. Slappey Blvd., Albany, GA 31701.

ALBANY - Jack Childs, 70, of 127 Turnkey Circle, Leesburg, died Tuesday, December 17, 2002, at his residence.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wooden Grove Baptist Church in Leesburg. Burial will follow in Kennon Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Clay County. The Rev. Henry Lee Holsey will officiate.
A native of Clay County, Mr. Childs was a member of Wooden Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Yolando Marilyn Atherton Childs of Leesburg; three daughters, Jacqueline Yvonne (James) Scott of Hallandale, FL, Cassandra Childs and Valarie Childs, both of West Palm Beach, FL; nine sisters, Laura Mae Mitchell and Christine Best, both of Chicago, IL, Bernice (Ralph) Mitchell of Jacksonville, FL, Lou Ella (Frank) Inman of Hallandale, FL, Hazel C. Bryant, Mary Lee Ward, Betty Jean Mitchell and Cherry Mitchell, all of Leesburg, and Shaffie B. (AB) Long of Orlando, FL; one brother, Rufus (Amy) Childs of Ft. Gaines; one granddaughter, Arnessa Yvonne Green of Hallandale, FL; three grandsons, Sean Daniels, D'vante Daniels and Larenz Daniels, and one Godson, Omar Phillips, all of Hallandale, FL.

A native of Durham, N.C., Mr. Day attended the public schools of Dougherty County and was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church.
Survivors include a devoted wife, Irene Day; stepson, Henry Rachel; father, Robert Day of Durham, N.C.; brothers, Lafayette Adams, Larry Day (Dorothy), Dwight Day, Gary Day, Roderick Day and Maurice Adams of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Gwendolyn Day Henderson (Willie) and Valerie Day; five step grandchildren; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.
Visitation will be 6 p.m.-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

ALBANY - Robert Clyde Giddens, 88, of Albany, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2002, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hall & Hall Chapel with interment in Riverside Cemetery. The Rev. Eron White will officiate.
Mr. Giddens was born in Nashville, GA, and had lived in Albany for the past 43 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Mae Giddens; a son, Jimmy Giddens; and a daughter, Gail Giddens Dalton.
Survivors include his present wife, Ruby Giddens of Albany; sons, Donald Giddens of Leesburg, Elroy Giddens of Los Angeles, CA, and Jackie Giddens of Albany; daughters, Dorothy Bryant of Leary, Jane O'Neal of Dawson, Margie Mason of Birmingham, AL, and Sandy Christmas of Centerville, TN; sisters, Janette McSwain of Tifton, and Hattie Burguss of Ocilla; 10 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
The family is receiving friends at the home of Donald Giddens in Leesburg and will be receiving friends at Hall & Hall Funeral Home today from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

ALBANY - Holiday Tucker, 91, of 443 Gator Pond Road, Smithville, died Friday, December 13, 2002, at Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church in Smithville with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Henry Lee Holsey will officiate.
A native of Lee County, Mr. Tucker was a retired farmer and had attended Lee County public schools. He was a member and chairman of the deacon board at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, chairman of the usher board, and treasurer of the Congress of Christian Education. He was born July 21, 1911.
Survivors include his wife, Glendora McClary-Tucker of Smithville; a daughter, Charlie Lue (Elijah) Reddick of Smithville; six stepdaughters, Elaine (Ronald) Barner of Americus, Eileen (Dann) Vickers of Albany, Connie McClary of Palm Bay, FL, Belinda Clayton, Debra Clayton and Patricia (James) Crumbley, all of Smithville; a devoted granddaughter, Gussie Mae (Ulysee) Bess of Albany; six stepsons, Bobby McClary of Smithville, Oliver (Elaine) McClary of Leslie, Otis (Dorothy) McClary, Kenneth McClary and Ronnie (Angela) McClary, all of Atlanta; one sister, Willie Lue Abron of Hartford, Conn; brother-in-law, Willie James (Gussie) Owens; two sisters-in-law, Lillie Mae (Lewis) Thompson and Hazel (Clarence) Robinson; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The remains of Mr. Holiday will lie-in-state at the church on Saturday from noon until the funeral hour.

The funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Sardis Baptist Church in Dawson with interment in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Shellman. The Rev. Donald Walker will officiate.
A native of Terrell County, Mr. West was a laborer for Primus Industries. He was a graduate of Terrell County High School in Dawson and attended New Beginning Holiness Church in Dawson.
Survivors include his grandmother, Ruby Goodman of Albany; eight sisters, Ozie Dell West, Evone Billings, Constance Coleman, Anita Edwards and Venessa Goodman, all of Albany, Sherlyn West of Dawson, Tracy West and LaShonda West, both of Valdosta; nine brothers, Robert West and Eddie West, both of Atlanta, Ronnie West of Bronwood, Donnie West and Nakia West, both of Dawson, Terry West, Riness West and Issac Goodman, all of Albany, and Derek Bell of Valdosta.
The remains of Mr. West will lie-in-state at the church Saturday evening from 3 p.m. until the funeral hour.

ALBANY - Oscar West Jr., 56, of 113 Old Smithville Road, Leesburg, died Monday, December 16, 2002, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at House of God Saints in Christ in Leesburg with interment in Mt. Pleasant Church cemetery in Leesburg.
Mr. West was born February 2, 1946, to the late Oscar West Sr. and Doris Porter West of Leesburg, GA. Four brothers preceded him in death, Bennie West, Gatewood West, Jerry West, and Paul West, all of Lee County, GA. He received his education in Lee County, GA. He was a member of House of God Saints in Christ Church of Leesburg, under the leadership of Bishop A.F. Caldwell Sr.
To cherish his loving memories are his mother, Doris West of Leesburg; daughter, Stephanie West of Leesburg; Goddaughter, Ashley Hill of Albany; five sisters, Ora (Jerome) Williams, Azzie (James) Eady of Albany, Shirley (Willie) Wallace, Dorishell (Leonard) Terrell and Theresa (Booker) Washington of Leesburg; six brothers, Joria (Mary) West, Jimmy West, Willie (Flora) West, Crawford (Gloria) West, of Leesburg, Julius (Barbara) West of Smithville, Kennedy (Linda) West of Dawson, and Phillip (Theretha) Covin of Albany; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
