Eugenia Ponton

Native of Puerto Rico, survived by family
Eugenia Montero Ponton, 88, of Independence Circle in Ellijay, died Feb. 13, 2006.
Ponton was born on Nov. 17, 1917, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the daughter of the late Avelino and Marie Bartola Garcia Montero.
She was a homemaker and of the Jehovah Witness belief.
She was preceded in death by her husband Angel Ponton; daughter Cynitha Andrade; and son David Ponton.
Survivors include children Angelo and Anna Liese Ponton of Canton, Carlos Ponton of Sunrise, Fla., Martha and Joe Anglerau of Chandler, Ariz., Evelyn and Clifford Abernathy of Blue Ridge, Marie Ponton of Cooper City, Fla., and Elizabeth and Alex Simpson of Ellijay; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and sister Rosa Pacheco of New York and Lelia Montero of Florida.
Memorial services were held Feb. 18, from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness in Ellijay with Richard Hendrix officiating.
Bernhardt Funeral Home of Ellijay was in charge of the arrangements.

Arlis Richeson

Loved to dance, bingo, native of Polk County
Arlis Leroy Richeson, 78, of Copperhill, died May 11, 2006, at Erlanger Medical Center.
Mr. Richeson was born June 1, 1927, in Polk County, to the late William Richeson and the late Ella Madison Richeson.
He loved to dance and play bingo.
Survivors include his brother Arthur Richeson of Copperhill.
Funeral services were held May 13, from the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Scott Baugh officiating. Music was provided by the “Singalongs, ” the group consists of Herb Arp, Marilyn Seabolt, and Edith Williams.
iIntermentfollowed in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Johnny Harris, James Ross, Scott Irons, Tony Irons, Chip Arnold and Charlie Harper.
The Finch-Cochran Funeral Home of McCaysville was in charge of the arrangements.

Ida Ash

Enjoyed sewing, owned farm and general store
Ida Johnson Ash, 93, of McCaysville, died June 2, 2006, in Buford, Ga.
Mrs. Ash was born Nov. 11, 1912, in Fannin County, to the late Joseph Holmes Johnson and the late Roxanne Lance Johnson.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and being a grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mrs. Ash owned and worked a large farm and also owned a general store.
She was preceded in death by her husband Vivid Ash; son Wendell Holmes Ash; grandson Wendell H. Ash Jr.; brothers Boyd Johnson and Luther Johnson and sisters Edna Dover and Hazel Hughes.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Gary and Carol Ash; sister Ruth Mashburn; granddaughters and their spouses Garol and Bill Orr, Ava and Peter Eraumas and Shannon Ash; grandson Gary Ash Jr.; great-grandchildren Alexandria Orr, Cristina Orr and Ashton Sellers.
Funeral services were held June 5 from the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Russell officiating.
iIntermentfollowed in Colwell Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers included Gary Ash Jr., Bill Orr, Randy Lance, Thomas Ash, Nathan Johnson and Randall Dover.
Honorary pallbearers included Harold Johnson, Kennon Mashburn, Larry Mashburn, Eugene Dover and Robert Miller.
The Finch-Cochran Funeral Home of McCaysville was in charge of the arrangements.

Janice McVey

Employed at Whitepath, native of Gilmer County
Janice Mae McVey, 59, of Blue Ridge died on May 28, 2006, at her home.
Mrs. McVey was born in Gilmer County, Ga., to the late Morris William and Dessie Mae Parks Brackett.
Mrs. McVey worked as a production line worker at Whitepath Fab Tech. She was a member of the Sugar Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Sidney Lee McVey.
Survivors include her daughter Ann Patterson of Blue Ridge; brother Gene Brackett of Blue Ridge; granddaughters Kristy, Brittany and Kayla Patterson, all of Blue Ridge; and great-granddaughter Sydney Nichole Patterson of Blue Ridge.
Funeral services were held on May 30, from the Sugar Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Jess Posey and the Rev. Harold Weeks officiating.
Music was by the Sugar Creek Church Choir. iIntermentfollowed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers included Dan Floyd, William Hughes, Bobby Thrasher, William Earl Thrasher, Jimmy McVey and Matt Floyd.
Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Nichols

Resident of Mineral Bluff, survived by family
Mary Lou Nichols, 73, of Mineral Bluff, died May 23, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Mrs. Nichols was born July 12, 1932, in Murray County to the late Truman Patterson and Effie Payne Patterson.
She was a member of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Nichols was preceded in death by her husband, Walt Nichols.
Survivors include her son Gregory Nichols of Mineral Bluff; mother Effie Patterson of Blue Ridge; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held May 25, 2006, from the Mineral Bluff Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Payne, the Rev. Gary Parris, and the Rev. Harold Crowder officiating. Music was provided by Shelia Thomas and the Crowder family. iIntermentfollowed in Chastain Memorial Park.
Pallbearers included Wayne Baxter, Ricky Baxter, Ronnie Payne, Donnie Payne, Jerry Justice, Billy Nichols, Tommy Nichols and Bobby King, Jr. Honorary pallbearers included Chad O’Neal, L. H. Long, Wayne McClure, Jimmy Nichols, David Justice, Jason Bradburn, Shawn Bradburn, Tommy Bryant, Dan Long, Scott Long and Tony Petty.
The Henry-Cochran Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge of the arrangements.

Glenda Weaver

Native of Fannin County, survived by family
Glenda Sue Weaver, 62, of Blue Ridge, died May 26, 2006, at her home.
She was born April 4, 1944, in Fannin County, to the late Lester Weaver and the late Elzie Kirby Weaver.
Survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law Cecil and Oleta Weaver of Atlanta, Allen and Betty Weaver and Roy and Beverly Weaver, all of Blue Ridge, and Raymond and Melissa Weaver of Estacada, Ore.; and sisters and brother-in-law Jean Anklowitz of Alexander, Va., and Faye and Bob Townsend of Blue Ridge.
Funeral services were held May 30 from the Henry-Coch-ran Funeral Home chapel.
iIntermentfollowed in Chastain Memorial Park.
Pallbearers included John Weaver, Craig McEachern, James M. Weaver, James Allen Weaver, Roy L. Weaver, Daryl McEachern and LaneHolloway.

Sylvia Evans

Helped establish Gilmer-Fannin Animal Shelter
Sylvia Evans of Cherry Log, died May 31, 2006, at the home of her daughter.
She was born in 1920 in Coal Valley, Ill., the daughter of the late Clarence L. Edwards and Rose Nitz Edwards.
Mrs. Evans was at one time employed by Emory University as a secretary to the biochemistry department.
After moving to Cherry Log, she and her husband were instrumental in the establishment of the Gilmer-Fannin Animal Shelter.
She was preceded in death by brother Adrian Edwards; and husband Thurlow Evans in 1991.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Judy Evans of Cherry Log, Janis and Jack Burel of Ellijay and Adrienne and Fred Bettress of Snellville, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law Thurlow and Virginia Evans of Good Hope, Ga.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Chance Animal Sanctuary, P.O. Box 997, Blue Ridge, Ga., 30513 or to the Wilderness Society, 1615 Main St. NW, Suite 200, Washington, D.C., 20036.
Bernhardt Funeral Home of Ellijay, was in charge.

Elvin Deal

Deacon of Mount Zion, CS plant operator
Elvin Woodrow Deal, 89, of Copperhill, died May 31, 2006, at his home.
Born in Copperhill, he was the son of the late Ira Jeffery Deal Sr. and Ida Mae Pless Deal.
Mr. Deal was a CS plant operator for Cities Service Co. He was a member and deacon of Mount Zion (Tumbling Creek) Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a son Charles Edward Deal, and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife of over 67 years Lucille C. Deal of Copperhill; son and daughter-in-law James Elvin and Berniece Deal of Copperhill; daughters and sons-in-law Margaret Jean and Tommy Jones of Copperhill, Betty Sue and Richard Locke of Copperhill and Wanda and Larry Morrow of McCaysville; brother James Bobby Deal of Copperhill; sisters and brothers-in-law JoAnn and Marvin Poole of Blue Ridge and June and Sal Tabone of Rome, Ga.; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held June 2 from the Akins of Blue Ridge chapel with the Rev. Lloyd Deal and the Rev. Gerald Payne officiating. Music was by the Deal family.
iIntermentfollowed in Mount Zion (Tumbling Creek) Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Matthew D. Deal, Scott Verner, Eddie Verner, Donald Jones, Donnie Jones and Chris Wimpy. Honorary pallbearers were Lloyd Deal, Rodney Wimpy, Jimmy Verner, Jeff Kyle, Dr. Santorufo, the staff of Adventa Hospice in Athens, Tenn., and the membership of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge of the arrangements.
