Randolph E. Morse

Randolph 'Randy' E. Morse, age 75, of Stockbridge, Ga., formerly of Dallas, Ga., passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2005.

Mr. Morse was a retired truck driver from Southern Wood Piedmont after 20 years of service. He also worked at Rambo Nursery as a truck driver.

Survivors include: his loving wife of 43 years, Betty Courson Morse; children and step-children, Wayne and Jeanette Lazenby of Dublin, Ga., Linda and John Stubbs of Stockbridge, Ga., Milton and Kathy Morse of Smyrna, Ga., lee and Diane Morse of Dallas, Ga., Sandra Morgan of Jonesboro, Ga., Robin and Dale Shaw of Jonesboro, Ga., Penny and Larry Campbell of Melrose, Wis., and Randalie Morse of Riegelwood, N.C.; 27 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A memorial service was held on Monday, April 25, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Abundant Life Church of God in Dallas, Ga., with Bishop Thomas Blagg officiating.

Pope Dickson & Son Jonesboro Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Carl D. Spaid

Mr. Carl Douglas Spaid, age 76, passed away Saturday morning, May 14, 2005, at his home.

A native of LeHew, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Alpha G. Spaid and Mabel Heishman Spaid of Gore, Va. He had lived most of his adult life in Candler County. After serving 20 years in the Army and Air Force, he retired as a TSgt., having served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After retirement he was a farmer in Candler County, being named “Man of the Year in Soil Conservation,” in 1981. He was a member of the Metter United Methodist Church, the Candler County Young Farmers, and served as President of Candler County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed square dancing, woodworking, playing cards, tending to his garden and pecan orchard, and spending summers at his home in the mountains.

Survivors include: his wife of 47 years, Betty Watson Spaid of Metter, Ga.; daughters and son-in-law, Jan. S. Rowell of Douglas, Ga., and Dee S. Houser and husband Mark of Tucker, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, David Spaid and wife Pat of Elberton, Ga.; grandchildren, Jamie Rowell of Douglas, Ga.; Jessica Danielle and Brittany Nicole Spaid both of Elberton, Ga.; stepmother, Ridgely Spaid of Gore, VA; step-brother, Charles Grady of Gore, WA; step-sisters, Marium LaFollette of Winchester, WA, and Virginia Orndorff of Gore, VA, and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mr. Spaid was preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel Watson Spaid; brothers, Charles Spaid, Russell Spaid and Clifton Spaid of Gore, VA, and one sister, Violet Spaid Jones of Stephen City, VA.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 16, 2005, at 2 p.m., Morgan Family Funeral Home in Metter, Ga. Interment followed in the Rosemary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 5102 Paulsen St., Bldg. 4, Savannah, Ga. 31405 or The Georgia Sheriff’s Boys Ranch, 5671 GA Hwy., 122 E., Hahira, Ga. 31632.

Louie Waters

Mrs. Louie Lee Odom Waters, age 93, of New Bern, NC, passed away on Friday, May 12, at her residence. She is the widow of the late Louie James Waters.

Survivors include: Son, James S. Waters, Greensboro NC; Daughter, Rosalyn W. Gilreath, Griffin, Ga.; Ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held 11:00 AM, on Monday, May 16, 2005 at the Centenary United Methodist Church in New Bern, NC, with Rev. Danny Allen and Rev. Charlene Guider officiating.

Graveside services will be held 10:00 AM, on Wednesday, May 18, at the Douglas City Cemetery in Douglas, GA., with Rev. Benji Varnell officiating.

Jack Whitworth

Mr. Jack Stribling Whitworth, age 74, of Douglas passed away on Friday, May 6, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas. Mr. Whitworth a native of Stephens County, Georgia was born June 27, 1930, son of the late, Clarence and Quilla Henson Whitworth. He was a US Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and he had retired from Crider’s Poultry, Inc. in Stillmore, Ga. He was a member of the Douglas Saint Paul Catholic Church.

Survivors include: Wife, Myrtlene Mullis Bryan Whitworth; Sons, Michael Whitworth, Houston, TX, Walt Bryan, Douglas, Ga. and Kenny Bryan, Soperton, Ga.; Sister, Joanne Mason, Westminster, SC; Brother, James Ray Whitworth, Benton, LA; Nine grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

First wife, Theresa Albert Whitworth and a brother, Clarence Whitworth, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held 11:00 AM, on Monday, May 9, at the Saint Paul Catholic Church with Father Dan O’Connell and Rev. Benji Varnell officiating. The Saint Paul Church Choir provided the special music. Burial was held in the Stephens Memorial Gardens in Toccoa, Ga., on Tuesday, May 10, at 2:00 PM.

Active Pallbearers were: Billy Crider, Dick Worrell, Milton Clements, M. J. Lott, Wayne Johnson, Karl Dockery, and Charles Cross Jr. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the Saint Paul Catholic Church Building Fund.

Sims Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Sarah K. Harper

Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Kirkland Harper, age 84, of Broxton, passed away early Saturday morning, May 7, at Coffee Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.

Mrs. Harper, a native of the Chatterton Community of Coffee County, was the daughter of the late Ben Josh Kirkland and the late Courtney Elizabeth Johnson Kirkland. She was the widow of the late Jesse Harper, a member of the Weir Center Senior Citizens of Coffee County and the Broxton Church of God.

Survivors include three daughters, Neita Donovan and husband Al, of Broxton, Sharon Cox and husband John, of West Green, and Linda Faye Baggett and husband Berry of Brunswick; four brothers, Ed Kirkland of Clairmont, Ill., Dan Kirkland of Brunswick, George Kirkland of Waynesville, Ga., and Noah “Red” Kirkland of Callahan, Fla.; three sisters, Ruby Burch of Douglas, Peggy Joiner of Lake Seminole, Ga., and Eva Withers of Jacksonville, Fla.; special friends, Juanita Pitts of Douglas, and Dennis and Denise Craft of Broxton; a special nephew, Eston Kirkland of Broxton; 13 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Mrs. Harper was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kellie Baggett Elliott and two brothers, J.H. Kirkland and Clifton Kirkland.

Funeral Services were held Monday, May 9, at 1 p.m., at the Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home with Rev. Joey Copeland and Rev. Jeff Morrow officiating. Special musical selections, “I’ll Meet You By The River,” and “Precious Memories,” and “I’ll Meet You In The Morning,” were rendered by Paul Hutcheson and Derwood Buchan, with Scott Roberts accompanying at the piano. Soloist Rev. Jeff Morrow sang “Stroll Over Heaven” with Verneal Grantham accompanying at the piano. Rev. Jeff Morrow also sang “Sheltered In The Arms of God” acappella at the gravesite. Interment followed in the Chatterton Grove Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Jesse Brian Bowen, Anthony Bowen, Harvey Ogden, Scott Ogden, Jason Ogden, and Michael Johnson.

Members of the Adult Sunday School Class of the Broxton Church of God and the congregation served as Honorary pallbearers.

Ricketson Funeral Home of Douglas was in charge of the arrangements.

Latrelle Barnes J. Poole

Latrelle Barnes J. Poole, age 70, of Waycross, Ga., passed away Tuesday morning, May 10, 2005, at the Satilla Care Center after an extended illness.

Mrs. Poole was born in Clinch County, Ga., to the late C.D. Barnes and Laura Mae Danforth Barnes. She was a homemaker and a member of the Waycross Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include: her five children, Randy Jewell and wife, Rhonda, of Douglas, Ga., Ricky Jewell and wife, Penny, of McDonough, Ga., Rodney Jewell and wife, Ladon, of Waycross, Ga., Lynelle Davis and husband, Bennie, of Waycross, Ga., Richard Jewell and wife, Debbie, of Douglas, Ga.; nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mrs. Poole was preceded in death by a son, Billy Joe Jewell and a brother, Parnell Barnes.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 12, at 11 a.m. at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery.

Jimmy Whitley

Mr. Jimmy Larry Whitley, age 65, of Douglas, Ga., passed away on Friday, April 29, 2005, at Coffee Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mr. Whitley, a native of Coffee County, Ga., was born on June 5, 1939, the son of Pauline Cato Whitley and the late Junious Felton Whitley. He was a retired insurance agent employed 40 years with Liberty National Life Insurance and a Veteran of the United States Air Force. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include: his wife, Patricia Browning Whitley of Douglas, Ga; one son, Gregory Felton Whitley and wife Angela, of Glenville, Ga.; his mother, Pauline Cato Whitley of Douglas, Ga.; two sisters, Shirley Whitley Johnson and husband, Roger Larry, of Monroe, Ga., Jennell Whitley Trowell and husband Harry, of Loganville Ga.; two grandchildren, Amber Grace Whitley and Phillip Blake Futch; several nieces, nephews and a brother-in-law, David Vann. Mr. Whitley was preceded in death by one sister, Joan Carol Vann.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 1, 2005, at the Central Baptist Church near Douglas with Rev. Wes Brown, Bryan Cannington and Robert Moore officiating. Soloist, John Baker sang, “Go Rest High On That Mountain” and soloist, Alison Bailey sang, “Wind Beneath My Wings,” with Margie Cason accompanying at the piano. Interment followed in the Central Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were nephews: Chris Johnson, Chad Johnson, Lee Vann, Glenn Vann, Eddie Royal, and Ricky Trowell.

Honorary pallbearers were: Employees of Liberty National Life Insurance Company, Allen Vaughn, Sammy Peterson, Paul Hutcheson, Dan Miller, Johnny Walton, Wayne Baker, Ronnie Anderson, Billy Joe Cato, Tony West, Osman Lewis, and Laurence Day.

Jack Whitworth

The Saint Paul Church Choir provided the special music. Interment was held in the Stephens Memorial Gardens in Toccoa, Ga., on Tuesday, May 10, at 2 p.m.

Arthur Corbitt

Mr. Arthur Corbitt, age 80, of Willacoochee, Ga. passed away Monday morning, May 2, 2005 at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Ga. following a brief illness.

A native of Coffee County, Mr. Corbitt was born June 13, 1924, the son of Ike and Eva Vickers Corbitt. He had made his home in Davie, Fla., for over 30 years before moving back to this area 18 years ago. He was a retired Superintendent in the Steel and Truss Industry. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II and participated in the Normandy invasion of Europe. He served as a paratrooper and was later captured and served the last nine months of the war as a prisoner. His military decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge, Purple Heart, ASF Red Star Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars. He attended the Willacoochee United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Lois Highsmith Corbitt of Willacoochee, Ga.; two sons James Corbitt and Jimmy Corbitt, both of Willacoochee, Ga., one daughter, Carolyn Simpson and husband Gary of Willacoochee, Ga.; two brothers, Marshall Corbitt of Willacoochee, Ga., and Vickers Corbitt of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Carlue Dowd of Uvalda, Ga., Essie Mae Wilson of Vidalia, Ga., and Eva Dell Turman of Brunswick, Ga., four grandchildren: Timothy Corbitt, Jason Corbitt, Gary Simpson, Wendy Osborne and husband George; one great-grandchild, Aiden Cole Osborne and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Corbitt were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at Arna Cemetery in Willacoochee, Ga., with Rev. Eddie Morrison officiating. Special music included “How Great Thou Art” rendered by Craig McKinnon, soloist, with taped accompaniment and “Amazing Grace” rendered by the congregation, led by Craig McKinnon. Interment followed at Arna Cemetery with Military honors rendered at the graveside by an Honor Guard Contingent from Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Serving as active pallbearers were Timmy Corbitt, Jason Corbitt, Michael Gillis, George Osborne, Fred Douglas and Britt Tillman.

Relihan Funeral Home of Pearson, Ga., was in charge of the arrangements.

Michael D. Glover

Mr. Michael Deon Glover, age 29, passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2005.

Mr. Glover was the youngest of six children, he was born on January 10, 1976, to the late Alvin Glover and Evone Glover. He attended Coffee County Schools and was employed with Gold Kist.

Survivors include: his wife, Sherry Glover; one daughter, Ashanti Glover; three step-daughters, Tiffany, Monquie, and Tasha; his mother, Ms. Evone Glover; mother-in-law, Levonia Sutton and husband John of Kingston, N.C.; father-in-law Willie Duffie; four sisters, Patricia Austin and husband Lester of Bowling Green, Ky., Barbara Gibson of Waycross, Ga., Paula Simpson and husband Daniel of Douglas, Ga.; and Vivian Glover of Miami, Fla.; two brothers, Mark Glover and wife Anita, and Alvin Glover, Jr.; three special uncles, Hal Presley and wife Carolyn, William Glover and wife Pauline, and Marildon Glover and wife Julia; two step-grandchildren, Kee and Richard, and a host of family and friends. Mr. Glover was preceded in death by one sister, Anita Glover Calhoun.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 23, 2005, at 2 p.m., New Salem Baptist Church in Ambrose, Ga., with Rev. Edward Glover, officiating. Special musical selections were rendered by the New Salem Baptist Church choir, with soloists Marildon Glover and Joyce Hilliard rendering a solo each. Interment followed in the Evergreen City Cemetery in Fitzgerald, Ga.

Active pallbearers were Todd Grady, Robert Moore, Bert Presley, Daniel Bivens, Randall Grady, and Hal Presley, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers were John Sutton, Clarence Brown, Jimmy Dale Glover, Willie Duehart, Jerome Williams, Jr., and Dereck Glover.

McIver Funeral Home of Douglas, Ga., was in charge of the arrangements.

George Griffin

Mr. George Ashley Griffin, age 76, of Wray, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas. Mr. Griffin, a native of Coffee County, was born November 1, 1928, son of the late Franklin (F. R.) Reynold and Drucilla Harper Griffin. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a retired farmer and an engineer with the State of Georgia Highway Department until his retirement.

Survivors: Wife, Virginia Harper Griffin; daughter, Catherine (Bruce) White, Douglas; son, Frank (Verdie) Griffin, Douglas; sister, Ella Jane Shaffer, Wray; grandchildren, Joseph Griffin White, LaRay Griffin, Ashley Griffin and Sarah Catherine Atkinson; two step grandchildren; four great grandchildren and nine step great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 7, at the Bushnell Chapel Church near Douglas with Rev. Roy Davis, Jr. and Rev. Toby Gale officiating. Special music was provided by soloist Rev. Toby Gale as he sang “Go Rest High On That Mountain” and by Janie and Man Kirkland who sang “Long, Long Journey” with Lois Mills, pianist.

Burial followed in the New Hope Church Cemetery near Ambrose. Active pallbearers were: Joseph White, Ashley Griffin, Wayne Harper, Reyn Nugent, Bunny Grantham, Adam Key, Jason Andrews, Sidney Shahee Kirkland and LaRay Griffin. Honorary pallbearers were: Rob Smith, Dennis Paulk, Jerry Paulk, Winston Paulk, Ricky Yarberry, Talley Purvis, Milo O’Steen, Lonnie O’Steen, Wilbert Phillips, Dan Paulk, Leon Kirkland, R. W. Spivey, Dutch Griffin, Warren Fowler, Jerry Davis, Cleon Buchan, Sammy Lastinger, Bonwell Royal, Jerry Harper, Walter Ray, J. H. Benson, James Griffin, David Evans, Jimmy Atkinson, Jimbo Atkinson, L. R. Fuller, Jack Brantley, Vickers Smith, Lamar Hill, Teresa P. Lynwood Horton

Mr. Lynwood Horton, age 63, of Brunswick, Ga., passed away early Sunday morning, April 24, 2005, at the Southeast Georgia Medical Center in Brunswick, following a brief illness.

Mr. Horton, a native of Douglas, was a retired Serviceman of Sears-Roebuck. He had worked with the local Sears-Roebuck Store prior to moving to Brunswick. He was the son of the late Burnis Wilburn Horton and the late Clarine Kelly Horton and a member of Pine Haven Baptist Church of Brunswick, Ga.

Survivors include: his wife, Betty J. Ricketson Horton of Brunswick, Ga.; one son, Michael Horton and wife Pam of Brunswick, Ga.; one grandson, Mikey Horton of Brunswick, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mr. Horton was preceded in death by one brother, the late Michael Van Horton.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday evening, April 26, 2005, at 4 p.m., at the Chapel of Ricketson Funeral Home, with Rev. T.W. Barnard and Rev. Sammy Chancey officiating. Special musical selections, “Beulah Land,” and “Our First Day in Heaven,” rendered by soloist, Dewayne Holt, with taped accompaniment. Phyllis V. Ricketson provided soft musical hymns for the prelude and postlude. Interment followed in the Reedy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Gary Phillips, Charles Rowell, Grady Carver, Sr., Ben Daniels, Doyle Baker, and Bill Kirkland.

Honorary pallbearers were W.A. and Willie Mae Baker, Dr. Arlis Burch and Libba Burch, Sonny and Terri Thompson, Tharion and Margaret Pittman, Buddy Willis, Don Wells, and Mary Clark.

Ricketson Funeral Home of Douglas, Ga., was in charge of the arrangements.
