SHIRLEY EDITH LACKEY

Mrs. Shirley Edith Lackey age 92 of Shirley Lane Blairsville passed away on Wednesday Oct. 21, 2009 at her home following an extended illness. Mrs. Lackey was born on Nov. 20, 1916 in Union County, the daughter of the late John P. Hedgecock and the late Minnie Gertrude Beavers Hedgecock. She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Lackey, one son, Sammy Lackey and by three daughters, Sarah Lackey, Emma Lee Collum and Martha Sue(Susie) Dockery. Mrs. Lackey was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Lackey are two daughters and one son-in-law, Reita Wright of Rawlins, WY., Jolynn and Ray Ingram of Blairsville, three sons and one daughter-in-law, Donald and Doreen Lackey of Blairsville, Bruce (and special friend Sue Hughes)Lackey of Blairsville, Gary Lackey of Blairsville, one brother, Thomas R. Hedgecock of Greenville, TN., many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday Oct. 24, 2009 at 2:00pm from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Evan Hughes officiating. Special music will be presented by the Mt. Olivet Church Choir. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Harold Thrasher, Travis, Eugene Lackey, Kevin Dyer, Anthony and Joe Don Collum. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Weston Lackey. Interment will follow in the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery.

HAZEL M. DUVALL

Mrs. Hazel M. Duvall age 85 of Ricky Brown Rd. Blairsville passed away on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009 in the Clay County Care Center following an extended illness. Mrs. Duvall was born on Aug. 12, 1924 in Union County, the daughter of the late Lon Morgan and the late Dovie Brown Morgan. Hazel and her husband Clinton owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Blairsville for over twenty years. She was a loving mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Duvall in 1990, a daughter-in-law, Marcia Duvall in 1984 and a brother, Cline Morgan. Mrs.Duvall was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Duvall are one son, Michael Duvall of Blairsville, one sister, Marie Brown of Blairsville, three nieces, May Lee Cheek, Marcella Turner, Meroline Lanham, four nephews, Charles and Cecil King, Ron and Danny Duvall, two grandchildren, April and Jon Krieger of Blairsville, Jeremy Duvall of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday Oct. 27, 2009 at 11:00am from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Gary Patterson and Rev. Tommy Seay officiating. Special music will be presented by Danita Kennedy, Debbie Owenby and the Revival Baptist Church Ladies Trio. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Bruce Cheek, Barry Patterson, Ben Dyer, Jeremy Duvall, Josh Kennedy and Jon Kennedy. Serving as honorary pallbearers, Charles, Cecil and Dustin King, Ron and Danny Duvall. Interment will follow in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Monday evening after 5:00pm.

LARRY WAYNE HOPKINS

US Air Force

Mr. Larry Wayne Hopkins age 54 of Rushy Glen Drive Blairsville passed away on Monday Oct. 26, 2009 in the Missions Hospital in Asheville, NC. following an extended illness. Mr. Hopkins was born on Oct. 6, 1955 in Rochester, NH., the son of Nancy Hunt Hopkins and the late Donald Robert Hopkins. He was a veteran of the US Air Force. Larry loved flying remote controlled airplanes. He was a very loving father, son, brother and grandfather. Larry was of the Episcopal faith.

Surviving Mr. Hopkins are his mother, Nancy Hopkins of Blairsville, one daughter, Jennifer Hopkins of Tampa, FL, one sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Charles Simard of Blairsville, Uncle, Rev. Marshall and Rev. Victoria Hunt of Cape Cod, MA, aunt, Rae and Walter Wilson of Grand Lake, CO., five grandchildren, Melinda, John-John, Gabby, Taylor and Dillon, several cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Interment and graveside services will be held on Thursday Oct. 29, 2009 at 1:00pm from the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. with Chaplain See officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Military Honors Division from Dobbins Air Force Base.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday Nov. 14, 2009 at 2:00pm from St. Clare’s Episcopal Church with Rev. James Yeary and Rev. Marshall Hunt officiating. The family will meet with friends following the services. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to St. Clare’s Church in memory of Larry.

BRUCE LEE BABCOCK

Age 51, Bruce passed away after an intense though short battle with cancer. Bruce was born in Lansing, Michigan - The son of George and Shirley Babcock. He was married to Betsy Jarrad (his high school sweetheart) on June 6, 1981. During their happy marriage of 28 years they had two beautiful daughters; Laura Michelle (21) and Lindsay Ann (19).

Bruce was passionate about his career-in-law enforcement starting as a patrol officer and working his way up to a Traffic Homicide Investigator in Broward County, Florida. After working hard throughout his entire life Bruce was able to build their dream house on the very top of a mountain in Blairsville, Georgia.

Bruce enjoyed traveling and had many adventures during his 51 years, including visiting most of the 52 states with his family and doing freelance work in the Caymen Islands (where on one trip he encountered a Russian Ship). One of his goals was taking a motorcycle trip across the country which he accomplished this spring. Though he lived in Florida for most of his adult life he remained a diehard Tigers and Lions fan, never losing his optimism for his Detroit teams even when the going got tough.

He is survived by his wife and children, his sister Sherry Piacenti (Dominic) of Lansing, his brother Robert (Debra) of Ypsilanti, his niece Jennifer Schick (Jack) of Lansing, his nephew Tony Piacenti (Tammie) of Raleigh, NC, his niece Rachel and nephews Stephan and James Babcock of Ypsilanti. His mother and father-in-law Julie and Bud Betts of Harrison, his brother-in-law Mike Jarrad (Joann) of Virginia Beach, VA, his sister-in-law Jodie Beavers (Paul) of Shepherd, his sister-in-law Susan Morris (Jeff) of Eaton Rapids, his brother-in-law Doug Betts (Marigene) of Battle Creek and their children. Bruce has made many friends throughout his life and career who became as special to him as family.

The Memorial Service will be held in Lansing, Michigan at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund at nleomf.com in memory of Bruce Babcock.

DELLA "REE" MARIE YOUNG

Mrs. Della "Ree" Marie Young age 88 of Old School House Rd. Young Harris passed away on Tuesday March 17, 2009 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Young was born on Dec. 20, 1920 in Towns County, the daughter of the late Harrison Shook and the late Verdia Arrowood. She was a native and lifelong resident of Towns County. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Young, four daughters, Dorothy, Hildred, Mildred and Helen Young, four grandchildren, Sarah, Sabrina, Dwayne and Michael. Mrs. Young was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Young are one daughter, Cathy Wimpey of Clarkesville, six sons and four daughters-in-law, Tony and Charlotte Young of Young Harris, Ray L. and Opal Young of Blairsville, Jerry Young, Dennis and Joy Young, Dwight and Debbie Young and Gary Young, all of Young Harris, two sisters, Opal Ingram of Young Harris, Ida Keys of Hiawassee, nine grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday March 19, 2009 at 11:00am from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Seay and Rev. Jeff Young officiating. Special music will be presented by Charlotte Young and Tim and carol Renshaw. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Jerick, Justin and William Young, Damon Youngblood, Dustan and Jason Young, Larry Brown and Frank Collins. Interment will follow in the Pine Log Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-9pm.

THOMAS EUGENE "TOMMY" PASSMORE

Thomas “Tommy” Eugene Passmore, age 60, of Blairsville GA, passed away after a long illness. Tommy was born in Jacksonville, FL on July 7th 1948. Tommy was an artist and was known for his extraordinary artwork and his unique individuality. He had a natural quality for quick wit and humor and an extreme devotion and love for his family and friends. He had a laid back positive free spirit and a great love of God and Country. Tommy was a free thinker. From his early childhood, Tommy exemplified great talent in many areas. Tommy loved to read. He was able to read a junior bible (a gift from his grandparents) by the time he was five years old. He was also encouraged by his grandmother Passmore who recognized his passion and talent for art. His grandmother Passmore, bought him presents of paint and brushes on his birthdays. His passion for art was foremost in his character and his genius of art was matched by his love of reading, music, poetry and philosophy. He always enjoyed school, learning and good humor. Tommy was involved in many extra ordinary activities in life. Tommy sailed on the Regina Maris, the oldest clipper ship licensed in the world when he was 17 years old. This is a famous ship in which Tommy did a painting of and that many books have been written about. Tommy inspired his sister Renae to become an artist. As a child, Renae would slip into Tommy’s sketch books and peer at them for long periods of time. Tommy inspired many others with his expressive philosophies. He will always be remembered for his originality, his extreme knowledge of history, his philosophical idealisms and his kindness towards others. He moved our hearts with his love of God and Country. He believed in liberty, freedom, and justice above all other honors. His heart was committed to love, truth and peace. He expressed this in his artwork. Tommy started studying art when he was 8 years old. Tommy inspired and enlightened many people with his expressive philosophy. He inspired his friends, family, and those around him with words of hope, love, and kindness. He was an understanding and forgiving person. He understood life’s hardships and challenges in ways that some of us could not imagine; he had an unflinching integrity and trust in God that could not be taken from him, regardless of his difficulties or circumstances. He believed above all other things, that God would take care of each of us as long as we followed God.

Tommy was preceaded in death by his brother, James Allen Passmore of Blairsville, GA, his nephew and niece, Charles “Israel” and Christy Hughes, his paternal grandparents, Thomas Dewitt and Claudia Cooper Passmore, his paternal great-grandparents, Jeff and Emma Cooper and Rose Mease, his maternal grandparents, James Edgar Bennett and Pearl Bennett Bay, his maternal great-grandparents, King Henry and Mary Elizabeth Bennett, his maternal great-grandparents, John and Mary Grimm Buckalew, his uncle and aunt, John (Red) and Emma Dane Carter, his uncle, Charles “Chester” Alton Bennett, his uncle, James “Clinton” Bennett, and his namesake, David Eugene Bass.

Tommy is survived by his parents, Thomas D. and Mary Elizabeth Passmore of Blairsville, GA, his brother and sister-in-law, George and Debbie Passmore of Aiea, HI, his brother and sister-in-law, David and Lianne Passmore of Honolulu, HI, his brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Jennifer Passmore of Gainsville, GA, his sister, Loella Passmore of Blairsville, GA, his sister, Renae Rockwood of Blairsville, GA, his sister-in-law, Lynn Passmore Carter of Hayesville, NC; Tommy was very fond of his nephew, James Wesley Passmore, and his wife, Pamela Passmore. He is also survived by many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Tommy’s family would like to thank all of his friends for all that they have done over the years to help him. You may have seen Tommy walking to town from Pat Colwell Road. You may have given him a ride at some time or bought him a meal. “Thank you, ” as Tommy would say. The community has been very gracious to our beloved Son, Brother and Friend. We love you and thank you for what you have done to help Tommy. A special thanks to all of the doctors, nurses, police and emergency personnel that have helped Tommy. We will always be grateful for the love and kindness you have shown.

MILDRED DAVIS SCHUTT

Mrs. Mildred Davis Schutt age 83 of Wesley Mtn. Drive Blairsville passed away on Wednesday March18, 2009 in the Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta following an extended illness. Mrs. Schutt was born on April 12, 1925 in Waycross, GA, the daughter of the late Daniel Davis and the late Laura Tuten Davis. Mrs. Davis loved animals and loved life. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mrs. Schutt was of the Christian faith.

Surviving Mrs. Schutt are one daughter, Stacey Drinnen of Port Charlotte, FL, two sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael and Beverly Schutt of Blairsville, Marty Schutt of Port Charlotte, FL, six grandchildren, Michael Schutt, Susan Bruhn, Adam Schutt, Andrew Schutt, Crystal Jones and Christopher Schutt, seven great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 22, 209 at 5:00pm from the Mountain View Chapel with Michael and Marty Schutt and Stacey Drinnen officiating. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Union County Humane Society in memory of Mrs. Schutt.

EDWIN GEORGE SHAW

US Army

Mr. Edwin George Shaw age 86 of Hillcrest Drive Hiawassee passed away on Tuesday March 17, 2009 at his home following a brief illness. Mr. Shaw was born on June 28, 1922 in Toledo, OH, the son of the late George Stanley Shaw and the late Mildred Thompson Shaw. He was a veteran of the US Army. He retired with over thirty years of employment with CBS Channel 13 in Tampa, FL. Edwin was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Shaw in 2004.Mr.Shaw was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving Mr. Shaw are one daughter and son-in-law, Edwina and Robert Fimbel of Lutz, FL, two grandchildren, Daivd M. Fimbel, Michelle D. Fimbel, two great grandchildren, Peyton M.Fimbel and Pierce T. Fimbel, many other relatives and friends also survive.

No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to a favorite charity of your choice in memory of Mr. Shaw.
