Hartley W. McHaffie, 94, of Davenport died Saturday, August 2, 2003 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport, Iowa. Celebration of Life Memorial services will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, August 6th in the chapel of Davenport Lutheran Home, Davenport.
Mr. McHaffie was born March 15, 1909 in Des Moines, Iowa to Alonzo and Mamie (McCless) McHaffie. He married Elfrieda H. Hertle November 7, 1959 in Des Moines.
He was a registered pharmacist with the family’s drug store, McHaffie Pharmacy, Des Moines, until his retirement in 1961. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and most recently, Risen Christ Lutheran Church. He enjoyed his family, flying and golfing.
Survivors include his wife Elfrieda, daughters and sons-in-law Sheila and Myron Thorberg, Davenport, and Sharon and Sterling McCain, Plover, Delaware, grandchildren Lisa Phifer, Julie Stroup, Eric Thorberg and Kristie Roberts, and a sister Edith Gurwell, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois.

Hazel H. Cowles, 85, of Davenport, Iowa died Monday, August 4, 2003 at Crest Health Care Center, Davenport. Celebration of Life services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 6th at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be noon until service time at the funeral home. Private burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens. Memorials maybe made to Ridgecrest Retirement Village or Zion Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Cowles was born April 3, 1918 in Davenport to Bernhardt J. and Clara (Bruning) Friedholdt. She married Robert E. Cowles May 29, 1941 in Davenport.
She had been a homemaker and loved to travel.
Survivors include her husband Robert, Davenport, sister and brother-in-law Anita and Gaylord Steffen, Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by sisters, Veronica Wulf and Agnes Evans and a brother, Bernhardt Friedholdt.

Remembrance services for T.J. Vesey, 70, of Rock Island, will be held 11 AM Saturday, August 16, 2003 at the Pentecostal Church of God, Davenport. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mr. Vesey died Saturday, August 9, 2003 at Trinity Medical Center – West Campus in Rock Island.
T.J. Vesey was born September 18, 1932 in Jackson County, Mississippi, a son of Alex and Queen Victoria (Scott) Veasley. On December 24, 1951, T.J. was united in marriage to Marie Steward in Mississippi.
Mr. Vesey worked in the Parts Department at John Deere Harvester for 26 years, retiring in 1990.
Memorials may be made to the family.
Survivors include his wife, Marie, Rock Island; daughters Lowerence Peniston and Florence Pugh, both of Rock Island; Betty Vesey, Milwaukee, WI; Charlene Cole (Wayne), Davenport; Janet Vesey, Rock Island; Nanette Vesey, Davenport; Chris Vesey, Rock Island; and LaTonya Vesey-Davis (Robert), Milwaukee, WI; sons, Tommy Vesey and Harry (Sabrina) Vesey, all of Rock Island; Jerry (Bessie) Vesey, Bettendorf; Alvin (Colette) Vesey, Davenport; and DeWayne Vesey, Rock Island; 52 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie (Leon) Stewart, Jonestown, Miss.; brothers, Willie Veasey, Davenport; Clay (Dorothy) Vesey, Rock Island; and Alex Vesey, Jr. (Ethell), Chicago.
Mr. Vesey was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters, and 3 brothers.

Ferne H. Cather, 91, former longtime resident at 2606 Westwood Place, Davenport, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at Bettendorf Health Care Center, Bettendorf. Celebration of Life services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, August 8th at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday, August 7th at the funeral home. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or St. John’s United Methodist Church, Davenport.
Mrs. Cather was born October 9, 1911 in Sullivan, Illinois to Francis A. and Cora M. (Aurand) Brown. She married Thomas Cather May 29, 1940 in Davenport. He died in 1996.
She was an administrative assistant in Data Processing at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1982 after more than 45 years. Her memberships included St. John’s United Methodist Church, The 15 Year Club of Rock Island Arsenal, and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Ferne was stationed stateside during WW II as a Wave in the U.S. Navy. She enjoyed traveling, especially to England, reading, and was an avid Illini fan. Her family was of utmost importance to her.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Michael and Carol Cather, Davenport, grandchildren and their spouses, Todd (Neely) Cather, Brooklyn, New York, Tricia (Harold) Wallace, Las Vegas, Anthony Cather, Iowa City, Iowa, Amanda Cather, Las Vegas, and Alissa Cather, Davenport, and great-granddaughter Sydney Wallace. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Lloyd Brown.

Mildred N. Imming, 83, of Davenport, died Monday, January 12, 2004 at the Kahl Home, Davenport, Iowa. Celebration of Life services will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, January 16th at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be 5-7:00 P.M. Thursday, January 15th at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Mrs. Imming was born April 29, 1920 in Blue Grass, Iowa to Tony and Alma (Coates) Wendland. She married Bernard C. Imming December 25, 1942 in Davenport, Iowa. He died in 1981.
She retired in 1986 after 20 years as secretary with the former Quad City Builders Association, now known as Illowa Builders Exchange, Inc., Rock Island. She belonged to Holy Family Catholic Church, Davenport, and to the National Association of Letter Carriers Auxiliary #129, Davenport.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Nancy L. and Les Kingsbury of Palm Coast, FL; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry L. and Rebecca Becky Imming of Bettendorf and John L. and Linell Imming of Brandon, FL; grandchildren, David Kingsbury of NC, Susan Kingsbury of CA, Douglas and Jeffrey Kingsbury, both of FL, Karen Imming of WI, Jeremy, Ashley and Justin Imming, all of IA, Brent Williams of FL and Michael Imming of FL; sister, Marcella Marcie Vieth of Davenport; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ada Ott and Vivian Puls, and two brothers, Leo and Clarence Wendland.

Robert J. Thompson, 83, passed away Sunday, July 27th at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus.
Celebration of Life Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, July 31st at Grace Lutheran Church, 1140 E. High Street, Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4-7 P.M. Wednesday at Weerts Funeral Home. Burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park, Davenport.

Robert was born May 13, 1920, the son of Howard and Georgia (Morrison) Thompson. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1938, and from the University of Illinois in 1942. He served in World War II.
He married Shirley Peterson on August 20, 1949. She died April 13, 1981. He married Carolyn M. Miller on July 18, 1987.
He retired from Bendix Instrument and Life Support Division in 1981, after 30 years, the last 16, he was comptroller.
Bob loved the game of golf and was a member of the Senior Golf League that played on Tuesdays at Duck Creek Golf course. He was a Cub fan and loved watching Illinois football and basketball games. He played the trumpet in the marching band of the University of Illinois.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church having served as treasurer for many years and a former member of the choir. He loved to sing. He was a member of the Plus 60 Club and the Tri L at his church. He was a member of the Elks, Davenport and the Moose Lodge in Davenport.
He loved to travel and especially take cruises.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn, son Rev. John R. (Leslie) Thompson, Danville, Illinois, daughters Kathleen (Timothy) Wahlig and Janet (Tony) Lopez of Bettendorf, step sons Lloyd Alan Miller, Phoenix, Arizona and Brian (Celinda) Miller, Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Grandchildren, Erik and Jessica Thompson, Chad and Krista Wahlig, Amanda and Matthew Lopez. Step grandchildren: Nichole and Natalie Miller, Tampa, Florida and Alex Miller, Tennessee.

Dorothy B. Lage, 98, of Pleasant Valley, Iowa, died Thursday, July 31st, 2003 at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport. Celebration of Life services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, August 4th at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be 11:00 A.M. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, Bettendorf or to a favorite charity.
Mrs. Lage was born March 15, 1905 in LeClaire Township, the eldest daughter of Detlef H. and Ella (Mess) Boege. She married Herbert J. Lage October 29, 1936 in LeClaire, Iowa. The couple operated a dairy farm in Pleasant Valley Township until their retirement in 1974. Mr. Lage died in 1975.
Before her marriage Mrs. Lage had been a teacher. She had a life-long interest in local history and has written histories of several Scott County river towns. Her other interests included gardening and music.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Ramona and James Baker, Bettendorf, grandchildren John Baker, Anchorage, Alaska and Mary Beth Baker, Bettendorf, great-granddaughter Jennifer Ann Baker, several nieces and nephews and a special friend Lilah Bell. She was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and a grandson.

Gladys F. Magers, 93, of Davenport, Iowa died Monday, August 11, 2003 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport. Celebration of Life services will be held 11 A.M. Wednesday, August13 at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be 4-7:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 12th at the funeral home. Entombment will be in the Oakdale Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Davenport. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Oakdale Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Magers was born February 14, 1910 in Quincy, Illinois to George J. Schumacher and Marie (Kurk) Schumacher. She married Kermit D. Magers December 29, 1934 at Salem Church in Quincy, Illinois. He died February 8, 1992.
In 1954 she and her husband took over ownership of the former Tri City Hobby Center and changed the name to Major Art & Hobby Center. Gladys, Kermit and their son Tom operated the business until the senior Magers retired in 1982. Gladys continued helping out Tom well into her 80’s. She enjoyed visiting with long-time customers and friends. She especially enjoyed seeing 2nd and 3rd generations of families returning to pursue hobbies.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Tom and Marjorie Magers of Davenport, grandchildren Sarah and her husband Stephen Williamson, Chicago, Jane and her husband Jamie Franco, Davenport, and Matthew, Davenport, one great-granddaughter Madeline Williamson, Chicago and special cousins in Quincy, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Dorothy M. Dwyer of Quincy.

William R. "Bill" Johnson, 71, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Friday, January 9, 2004, at his home.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday , January 12, 2004, at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be Sunday, January 11 from 1:00-3:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park, Davenport. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. John's United Methodist Church.
Bill was born November 16, 1932, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Leonard R. and Hazel (Ick) Johnson. He married Shirley Ouderkirk on June 12, 1954, in Davenport.
After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he returned to Boone, where he began his career in banking. In 1965 he moved his family to Bettendorf where he was vice president of commercial lending at Northwest Bank and later, at Metro Bank in East Moline. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1954. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Davenport.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley, his daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Larry Toll, Sioux Falls, S.D., and his daughter, Julie Johnson, Chicago, Ill.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents.

MATTHEW A. SCHWABE

Matthew A. Schwabe, 28, formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa died Friday, January 9, 2004 at Trinity West Hospital, Rock Island, Ill.
Celebration of Life Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 14 at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 13 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport. A memorial fund will be established.
Matthew was born June 15, 1975 in Moline, Ill., the son of Gregory Lee Schwabe and Mary J. (Boeh) Peterson.
Matthew was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. He was a pioneer subject in spinal cord research, in an effort to improve the lives of other spinal cord injured patients.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Mary J. and Clair A. Peterson, Bettendorf, Ia., father and stepmother, Gregory Lee and Cathy Schwabe, Moline, Ill., one sister, Brittany Schwabe, three brothers, Joshua A. Schwabe, St. Petersburg, Fl., Jacob T. and Luke A. Peterson, both of Bettendorf, maternal grandmother, Marguerite Brooks, Bettendorf, paternal grandparents, Jack and Anna Fae, Moline, Ill., and paternal great-grandmother, Avis Shaus, Thompson, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Kenneth J. Boeh.

ROBERT WAYNE CHILDS

Robert Wayne Childs, 55, of Davenport, Iowa, formerly of Greenwood, Mississippi, died Saturday, January 31, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport, Iowa.
All services will take place in Memphis, Tenn. Burial will be in Memphis National Cemetery. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, has assisted the family with local arrangements.
He was born July 11, 1948, in Greenwood, Miss., the son of Carmen (Birch) and Howard Childs. He married Ann Mounger on September 1, 1969, in Greenwood, Miss.
Wayne served his country as a Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. Army, serving one tour of duty in Vietnam. He retired as a highly decorated veteran in 1989 after 20 years. He then flew as a pilot for the former Eastern Airlines.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-laws, Lorie and Michael Myrick of Birmingham, AL, and Shelley and Jeremy Austin of Anniston, AL; sisters, Martha Childs, Greenwood, MS, Deborah Childs Wilt, Gulfport, MS, and Mary Catherine Underwood, Greenwood, MS; one brother, John Childs, Florida; and a special friend, Susan Brand, Davenport. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Kelley Lynn, and his brother, Frank Birch Rule.

Vern Berry, 97, of Bettendorf, Iowa died Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at Bettendorf Health Care Center, Bettendorf. Celebration of Life services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, January 17th at Asbury United Methodist Church, Bettendorf with a visitation one hour prior. Visitation will be 4-6:00 P.M. Friday, January 16th at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Bettendorf Health Care Center, Midwest Writing Center, Rock Island, or Asbury United Methodist Church, Bettendorf.
Mrs. Berry was born July 19, 1906 in Macomb, Illinois to Oscar and Jessie (Brown) DeMoney. She married Rex Hanford Berry May 24, 1925 in Davenport. He preceded her in death August 8, 1976.
She and her husband owned Berry Motor Company, a garage in Tipton, Iowa, for 32 years. She was best known as a cook and author, widely published in magazines such as Nostalgia, Weight Watchers magazine and Reminisce. She was a senior winner in a Pillsburys Bake Off contest. At 88, she published Roots and Recipes- Six Generations of Heartland Cookery. She helped produce How Iowa Cooks, a cookbook in Tipton, Iowa. She appeared many times on Paula Sands Live doing cooking demonstrations and won many trips and prizes including one to Cuba. She was especially known for her famous cinnamon rolls.
Her memberships included Asbury United Methodist Church, and she was a Member Emeritus of the National League of American Pen Women, Inc.
Survivors include daughters, Doris (Towle) Meier and Barbara Laake, both of Davenport; grandchildren, Kathy and Dick Meier of Davenport, Marcia and Jerry Ludden of Rock Island, David Towle of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jerry and Karen Laake of Davenport, Mary and Bob Engel of Waxahachie, Texas, Patricia Sifert of Davenport, Mark and Rhonda Laake of Galesburg, Illinois, John and Jen Laake of Davenport, and Matt Laake of Waxahachie, Texas; step-grandchildren, Chris and Gary Janes of Davenport, Lisa and Steve Shippy of Rock Island, and Mark and Tina Meier of Rochester, Iowa; 15 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.

Mr. Jones was born December 27, 1919 in Winterset, Iowa to Charles A. and Alice (Watkins) Jones. He served with the U.S. Army during WW II. He married Mary A. Jensen April 12, 1946 in Modesto, California.
He was an inventory specialist with the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring July of 1979. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Davenport, and DeWitt American Legion, Post #238. He enjoyed golf and watching football.
Survivors include his wife, Mary of DeWitt, Iowa; daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Randy Cain of Davenport; son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Patty Jones of Rock Island, Illinois; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Charles Paul, and a brother, Earl.

ALVIN A. OETZMANN
November 30, 1915 - February 9, 2004

Alvin A. Oetzmann, 88, of Davenport, Iowa died Monday, February 9, 2004 at his residence. Celebration of Life services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, February 12th at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, Pastor Dan Mixdorf officiating. Visitation will be 4-8:00 PM Wednesday, February 11th at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or Genesis Hospice Care of VNA.
Mr. Oetzmann was born November 30, 1915 to Emil and Reada M. (Wiese) Oetzmann. He married Joyce Benning August 28, 1940 in Davenport, Iowa. She died April 18, 1999.
He farmed in Scott County for over 46 years, retiring in 1976. In addition to farming he enjoyed gardening, his fruit trees, caring for his yard, and especially mowing the grass. His family was of the greatest importance to him, especially spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church, Eldridge, and a member of Scott County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Martin Ruwe of Walcott; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth L. and Sue Oetzmann of Davenport; grandchildren, Brian and Jodi Ruwe, Tracey and Jeff Ruge, Beth and Todd Graff, and Tim and Jennifer Oetzmann; nine great-grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren; brother, Roland Oetzmann of Eldridge. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, sisters, Edna Tank and Alice Goettsch, and brothers, Lloyd and Clarence Oetzmann.
The family would like to thank Pastor Dan Mixdorf, Genesis Hospice Care of VNA, Guardian Home Care, and especially Rose Weber and Becky Yaggie for their excellent care.

Velma M. Hill, of Davenport, Iowa, died Friday, February 6, 2004 at her home. Celebration of Life Services will be Tuesday, February 10 at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be 3-6 P.M., Monday, February 9, at the funeral home.. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport. Memorials may be made to Genesis VNA Hospice.
Mrs. Hill was born November 30, 1913 in Donahue, Iowa to John and Emma (Holland) Erps. She married Roland H. Hill June 26, 1949 in Davenport. They were married fifty-four years. Velma owned and operated Velmas Beauty Shop from 1935-1980, when she retired.
Velma was a fifty-year member of Northwest Turners, Liedertafel, and Phythian Sisters .
She enjoyed playing cards and traveling.
She is survived by her husband, Roland; a niece, Colleen (Erps) Rueth, Atlanta, Georgia; nephews, Douglas Erps, Maryland, and John Erps, Davenport; and sister-in-law, Janet B. Paul, Phoenix, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her sister, Lucille Chandler, and brothers, Clarence and Melvin Erps.
