Leo R. Schneider

Oct. 25, 1928 - Feb. 27, 2003

SARASOTA, Fla. - Leo R. Schneider, 74, of Sarasota, Fla., died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Kensington Manor in Sarasota, Fla.

He was born on Oct. 25, 1928, in Freeport, Ill., the son of George and Marie Deery Schneider. He married Marjorie Piggott on June 26, 1966, at the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Hamilton, Ill. She survives in Sarasota.

Additional survivors include: two brothers, George Schneider of Elgin, Ill; and Norman Schneider of Freeport.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim.

Mr. Schneider was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served for two years.

He had been employed as a draftsman at the Structo and Rexam companies.

Mr. Schneider enjoyed boating, fishing and playing the organ.

Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, with Robert Wagner officiating. A flag presentation will be held at the graveside by Hamilton V.F.W. Post #5256.

Memorials have been established.

Lamporte Funeral Home of Hamilton is in charge of arrangements.

Frances H. Reno

May 23, 1931 - June 16, 2003

KEOSAUQUA - Frances H. Reno, 72, of Keosauqua, died at 5:23 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2003, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

She was born on May 23, 1931, near Pulaski, to Forrest D. and Ruth Widmer Hartzler. She married Max E. Reno on Sept. 26, 1948, at the Pulaski Mennonite Church. He survives.

Additional survivors include: three sons, Stephen and his wife, Joanna, of Ankeny, Marcus of St. Petersburg, Fla., and R. William of Phoenix, Ariz.; son-in-law, Stephen Shriver of Bonaparte; seven grandchildren; four sisters, Hazel Fry of Green Valley, Ariz., Ellen Lowe of Batavia, Ill., Christine Botts of Bloomfield and Gertrude Saylor of Mountain Pine, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Heidi Shriver; a brother, John Hartzler; and a sister, Florence Lowenberg.

She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1948.

Mrs. Reno worked with her husband in Reno Feed Service in Bonaparte and Reno Real Estate and Auction Service in Bonaparte, Keosauqua and Bloomfield and she served as her husband's secretary while he was a state senator from 1964-1968.

Mrs. Reno was a member of Bonaparte Baptist Church, Chapter AB, P.E.O., Bonaparte and the Thursday Bridge Club, Keosauqua.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Bonaparte Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Caston officiating.

Cremation will follow the service with burial at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bonaparte Cemetery.

Open visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua with family meeting friends from 3 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Bonaparte Baptist Church and the American Diabetes Association.

James W. Huiskamp

Nov. 23, 1905 - July 7, 2003

CEDAR RAPIDS - James W. Huiskamp, 97, longtime Keokuk resident and banker, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at the Cottage Grove Nursing Home in Cedar Rapids.

He was born Nov. 23, 1905, the son of James W. Huiskamp Sr., and Eva Logan Huiskamp. He married Jean McManus on May 16, 1934. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include: a brother, Carl Christian Huiskamp and his wife Lucille of Keokuk; a sister-in-law, Nadine Huiskamp of Phoenix, Ariz.; four children, Sister Julia Huiskamp of East St. Louis, Ill., James Edward Huiskamp and his wife Nancy of Cedar Rapids, William Gerard Huiskamp and his wife Colleen, of Moline Ill., and Jane Langford of Nauvoo, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his brother, William Logan Huiskamp.

Mr. Huiskamp was a graduate of Keokuk Senior High School and the University of Iowa. He was the last known survivor of the College of Law, Class of 1928. He was a lifelong Hawkeye fan.

Mr. Huiskamp inherited his family's love of baseball. As a young man he witnessed the famous home run in the Cubs-Yankees World Series when Babe Ruth pointed to the spot where he would hit the next pitch.

He played ball for his father as a teen and on various amateur teams including the Young Indians. Later he coached the YMCA senior division of Little League.

Mr. Huiskamp served as vice-president of the State Central Bank for many years and also was a director of that bank and of Security State Bank. He was a member of the Iowa Banker's Association and the Iowa Bar Association.

Always proud of his Keokuk heritage and anxious to promote his hometown, Mr. Huiskamp was a life long contributor to numerous civic endeavors.

Mr. Huiskamp was a district president of Rotary. He acted, directed and wrote plays for the Keokuk Little Theatre. He served several terms as a member of the Keokuk School board and was finance chairman during his tenure.

In his retirement years, Mr. Huiskamp undertook several pro bono cases to benefit the city and citizens of Keokuk. This included a case to draw the Iowa boundary lines and several successful utility rate cases which netted thousands of dollars of refunds to Keokuk rate payers. He was a major donor with his brothers and mother for the building of the present day public library.

Mr. Huiskamp was a devoted member of the Congregational Church.

Funeral services are at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Greaves Mortuary in Keokuk with Rev. R.M. Lukoskie officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Visitation is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greaves Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Public Library or to Griffin Center, East St. Louis.

Ve Starr Wardlow

May 6, 1917 - Sept. 8, 2003

MONTROSE - Ve Starr Wardlow, 86, of Montrose, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at the Montrose Health Center in Montrose.

She was born on May 6, 1917, in Keokuk, the daughter of Hugh E. and Ve Starr Tweedy. She married Gale Wharton in 1936 in Fort Madison. She later married Ellis Wardlow on Dec. 2, 1954, in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1984.

She graduated from the Montrose High School with the Class of 1935.

Mrs. Wardlow was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose and a member of the Christian Home Study Club.

She loved music and enjoyed singing in the church choir.

She also enjoyed arrowhead hunting and antiquing. She was an excellent seamstress and cake decorator.

Mrs. Wardlow was a loving mother and grandmother and treasured the times she spent with her family.

Survivors include: a daughter, Carol Christensen and her husband, Guerden, of Montrose; a son, Stan Wardlow and his wife, Laurie, of Montrose; 13 grandchildren, Eric Lanman (Santya), Starr Lanman (Tom Greenfield), Hope Krebill (Ron), Ryan Christensen, Mark Lanman (Gina), Alisa Parker (Tom), Karen Nolte (Rich), Laura Wardlow, Greg Wardlow, Mike Gibbons, Matt Gibbons, Nick Gibbons and Natia Gibbons; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; former daughter-in-law, Ann Haas of Nauvoo, Ill.; three sisters, Marjorie Lind of Keokuk, Elizabeth Dresser and her husband, Harry, of Montrose and Virginia Pezley and her husband, John, of Argyle; a brother, David Tweedy and his wife, Elsie, of Montrose; four sisters-in-law, Phoebe Tweedy of Donnellson, Pearl Tweedy of Montrose, Edith Tweedy of Montrose and Alta Tweedy of Oregon; a brother-in-law, Eston Woodruff of Keosauqua; her best friend, Olive Megchelson of Montrose; nieces and nephews; and cousins.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Starr Wharton; a son, Alan Wharton; four brothers, Jim, Kenneth, Hugh and Jay Tweedy; three sisters, Mildred Lee, Katheryn Lowenberg and Florence Woodruff; three brothers-in-law, Merton Lind, Harry Lee and Carmi Lowenberg; and a sister-in-law, Fern Tweedy.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Montrose Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose, with the Rev. Elliott George officiating.

Friends may register after 1 p.m. Friday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with family meeting friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Montrose Methodist Church.

Dorothy E. Mearion

March 6, 1906 - Sept. 25, 2003

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Dorothy E. Mearion, 97, of Washington, D.C., a former Keokuk resident, died at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at the Fairland Adventist Nursing and Rehab Center in Silver Springs, Md.

She was born March 6, 1906, in Keokuk, the daughter of John W. and Lulu McElroy Mearion.

She had been a resident of Washington, D.C., since 1941.

She had been employed at the Office of The Treasurer in Washington until retiring in 1972.

She was a member of the Trinity AME Zion Church in Washington.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and cousins.

There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Ronnie Braggs officiating.

Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk.

Doris Wood North

March 13, 1919 - Sept. 25, 2003

ISSAQUAH, Wash. - Doris Wood North, 84, of Issaquah, Wash., formerly of Keokuk, died at Overlake Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003.

She was born on March 13, 1919, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Emil and Alice Wood.

She was raised in Kansas City and graduated from Northeast High School in Kansas City in 1937 and from the University of Kansas in 1939.

She married Ray S. North June 28, 1941, in Kansas City.

They lived in Keokuk and Clinton for 35 years before retiring to Bonita Springs, Fla., in 1984.

They moved to Issaquah in 1996.

In her leisure time she enjoyed traveling, cruises, RV traveling, quilting and spending time with her friends and family.

In addition to her husband survivors include: two sons, Edward North of Redmond, Wash., Charles North of Keene, N.H.; two daughters, Judy Wright of Bonita, Calif., and Carol North of St. Louis, Mo.; sister, Norma Glorioso, of Kansas City; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Sunday at the Pine Lake Convenant Church, 1715 228th Ave. SE, Sammamish.

Burial was in the Tahoma National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the above church.

Arrangements were handled by the Flintofts Issaquah Funeral Home, in Issaquah.
