Beverly A. 'Bev' Brown

May 9, 1940 - March 9, 2004

Beverly A. "Bev" Brown, 63, of Keokuk died at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born May 9, 1940, in Keokuk, the daughter of H.H. "Bud" and Jane Craig Brown.

Ms. Brown's interests were varied. She enjoyed singing, spectator sports and working in community projects such as City of Christmas, Civil War Reenactment festivities and Red Cross.

She was a member of the Keokuk Area Group Home board, Friends of the Keokuk Animal Shelter and loved animals.

Ms. Brown also delivered meals to shut-ins and took patients to chemotherapy and radiation treatments as a volunteer for Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Keokuk, where she worked on many committees of the church, was a member of the choir and was interested in the Keokuk Catholic Education System.

Ms. Brown graduated from Keokuk High School and worked various office positions before embarking on a learning trip to Seattle, Salt Lake City and Boston.

She was a graduate of Des Moines Practical Nursing. She then was employed by St. Joseph Hospital and Keokuk Area Hospital until she retired.

Survivors include: two brothers, her twin, Richard Brown and his wife Vicki of Clarksville, Va., and Craig Brown and his wife Mary of Green Valley, Ariz.; a niece, Beverly Baker of North Quincy, Mass.; and four nephews, Richard Brown of North Easton, Mass., Craig Brown of Denver, Colo., Chris Brown of Quincy, Ill., and Ryan Brown of Clarksville.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Friday at All Saints Catholic Church with the Rev. Paul Connolly officiating.

Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. today at Greaves Mortuary, Keokuk, with family meeting friends from 6 to 9 p.m. A Christian Vigil Service is at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Area Group Home or All Saints Catholic Church.

Isaac Edward 'Pops' Tate Jr.

April 12, 1941 - March 17, 2004

Isaac Edward "Pops" Tate Jr., 62, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at his residence in Keokuk.

He was born on April 12, 1941, in Lewis County, Mo. He was the son of Isaac and Liza Mariata Dade Tate Sr.

He had lived in Davenport for 40 years and had been employed as a welder. He had lived in Keokuk for the last two years.

Mr. Tate served with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed fishing, playing pool, and bingo.

Survivors include: eight children, Barbara Ann Hatfield of Keokuk, Ray Anthony Tate of Alexandria, Mo., Emma Marie Tate, Valerie Elaine Tate, Isaac Junior Tate, Wallace O. Tate Crouch, Vanessa Tate and Anthony Isaac Tate; a sister, Katherine M. Hodges, of Canton, Mo.; five grandchildren, Colby Tate, Jordan Tate, Tyler Hatfield, Erika Hatfield and Layke Hatfield; and nieces, nephews, and friends of the family including Ellen Tate of Keokuk.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wilbur and Isaac's twin Julian; and two sisters, Mary Lou and Doris Marie.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk, with Rev. Sylvia Tillman officiating.

Burial will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites.

Visitation will be Sunday at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. with the family meeting friends during that time.

Alan F. Lee

Dec. 4, 1927 - Feb. 28, 2004

SANTA FE, N.M. - Alan F. Lee, 76, of Santa Fe, N.M., died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at St. Vincent's Hospital, in Santa Fe.

He was born Dec. 4, 1927, in Neenah, Wis., the son of Margretha and Charles Lee.

The family later moved to Rockford, Ill., where he attended junior and senior high school. He received his bachelor of arts degree and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Grinnell College, where he was involved in activities of the NAACP.

He then attended the University of Munich in Germany for postgraduate work, and stayed on in Munich to work at Radio Free Europe.

He subsequently enlisted in the Navy, was admitted to Officer's Candidate School and served as a lieutenant J.G. in the South Pacific.

Upon his discharge from the Navy he attended Columbia University for two years and earned a master's degree in international affairs. It was there he met his wife, Lynn Fisher. They married on Nov. 17, 1956, in Lake Placid, N.Y.

He entered the Foreign Service that same year and served at a number of posts over the next 10 years: in intelligence and research in Washington, D.C.; as vice-consul in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; as Aide to the Ambassador in Bonn, Germany; as a student of the Turkish language for nine months at the Foreign Service Institute in Washington; and as economic officer in the Central Treaty Organization in Ankara, Turkey.

Mr. Lee resigned from the Foreign Service in 1966, moving his family of five children to Keokuk, the birthplace of his wife. There he took on the position of vice president and secretary of the Hubinger Company, an independent corn-refining company. When Hubinger's was acquired by H.J. Heinz, he left the company and, with his wife, started Lee Travel Associates, a travel agency. They later added a second office in Fort Madison. After eight years in the business, they sold the agencies and moved to Santa Fe.

Mr. Lee then went into real estate, working as manager of AAA Travel for a short time and eventually developing his own company, Alan Lee Real Estate.

During his years as a business executive, he served on many boards and civic associations. In Keokuk he was a member of the Rotary Club; sat on the Board of Directors of State Central Savings Bank and the Salvation Army; and was president and a member of the Board of the Keokuk Art Center.

Over the last 20 years he was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Santa Fe.

Mr. Lee retired for good in 1998 and he and his wife spent their time traveling with friends and family, enjoying concerts and art events, gardening, and becoming involved in local Democratic Party activities.

While living in Iowa he spent many hours sailing on the Mississippi River and in his retirement years he loved to sail on the Sea of Cortez.

Adding to his fluency in German and his general interest in languages, he had been studying Spanish for several years with Fernando Mayans at the Santa Fe Community College.

He had recently begun a new activity that brought him great joy and fulfillment, tutoring Patrick Sena's fourth grade class at Salazar Elementary School.

He was known as Boppy to his seven grandchildren.

He was a man of great honor, intelligence and compassion and will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends.

Survivors include: his wife of Santa Fe; five children - daughter, Carolyn Lee and son-in-law Ted Larsen of Santa Fe, daughter, Elizabeth Lee of Santa Fe, son, David and daughter-in-law Christine Lee of Boston, son, Robert Lee of Phoenix and daughter, Catherine Lee of Boston; seven grandchildren, Alex Delecluse and Madeleine and Nicholas Larsen of Santa Fe, Celia and Emmet Raney of Santa Fe and Rachel and Justin Lee of Boston; and a sister, Barbara and brother-in-law, Bill Higgins of Toquerville, Utah.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. Bede's Episcopal Church in Santa Fe, followed by a reception at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Salazar Partnership, 978 Indian Ridge Road, Santa Fe, N.M. 87501, in care of the Alan Lee Memorial. The donations will be used to provide reading books for the elementary school students for them to begin their personal libraries. Donations may also be made to MoveOn.org Voter Fund, P.O. Box 9063, Berkeley, CA. 94709.

Arrangements are under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service, 1399 Luisa Street, Santa Fe.

Larry Michael Grice

Aug. 29, 1945 - March 29, 2004

Larry Michael Grice, 58, of Keokuk died at 6:15 p.m. Monday, March 29, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

He was born Aug. 29, 1945, in Keokuk, the son of Charles Richard and Olivia Rosencrans Grice.

He moved from Florida to Keokuk in 1995.

Mr. Grice had worked at the Keokuk Country Club as Golf Assistant and then owned Southeast Iowa Golf Cars.

He was a member of Keokuk Elks Lodge #106.

He was an avid fan of the Miami Dolphins, University of Miami Hurricanes and the St. Louis Cardinals.

He loved the game of golf.

Survivors include: a daughter, Kimberly Minter and her husband, Jim, of Keokuk; twin sons, Keith Grice and his wife, Toni, of Florida and Kevin Grice and his wife, April, of Florida; four grandchildren; his mother of Keokuk; a brother, Gary Grice and his wife, Diana, of Keokuk; a sister, Becky Overton and her husband, Mark, of Mount Pleasant; and three nephews and a niece.

He was preceded in death by his father and several aunts and uncles.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Park with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating.

Burial will follow.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday at DeJong's Funeral Home with family meeting friends from 7 to 9 p.m. A public Elks memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Elks Fairview Golf Course.

Scott Edward Bryant

July 17, 1967 - May 17, 2004

DONNELLSON - Scott Edward Bryant, 36, Donnellson, died Monday, May 17, 2004, in Fort Madison.

He was born July 17, 1967, in Keokuk, the son of Edward and Alice Young Bryant.

He married Micki Beaird on July 23, 1988, in Keokuk. She survives.

He was a graduate of Central Lee High School, Donnellson, with the Class of 1985. He had been employed as a CERT officer at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison for 17 years.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk.

He was a member of the N.A. Hunting Club, the Green Acres Country Club and the AFSCME Union.

He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt, especially bow hunting. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing and riding Harley Davidsons.

He was a loving husband and father, and cherished the times he spent with his family.

He was proud to be able to coach his daughter's softball team.

Additional survivors include: two daughters, Brooke Bryant and Bailie Bryant, both of the home; his parents of Montrose; his parents-in-law, Kenneth and Sally Beaird of Keokuk; a brother, Bradley Bryant and his wife, Denise, of Montrose; two sisters-in-law, Tammi Kircher and her husband, Ed, of Keokuk, and Terri Christenson and her husband, Mike, of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Doug Beaird and his wife, Mary, of Burlington; two nephews, Kole Bryant and Dilan Beaird; five nieces, Megan Kircher and Kali Kircher, Molly Christenson and Anna Christenson, and Hilary Beaird.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church of Keokuk, with the Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Paul Evangelical Cemetery, Donnellson.

Visitation is after 4 p.m. today at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with family meeting friends from 6 to 9 p.m.

A memorial has been established for his childrens' education fund.
