John "Jack" McAndrew Jr.

SEGUIN, Texas – John “Jack” McAndrew Jr., 88, of Seguin, Texas, died Sunday, July 9, 2017, at the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in Seguin.

He was born on Dec. 28, 1928, in Keokuk, the son of John Loren and Rosa G. Long McAndrew.

On Oct. 28, 1947, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Ladene Ellison at the Shrine of St. Patrick in St. Patrick, Mo. She preceded him in death on Feb. 18, 1995, in Edmond, Okla.

Born and raised in Keokuk, he attended St. Vincent’s grade school and for two years attended St. Peter’s High School. In 1945, his family moved to a farm in the diamond neighborhood near Kahoka, Mo. Jack then graduated from Kahoka High School in 1947. After he graduated, he married Kathryn and they lived on a farm in the Clark City area and engaged in farming with his father. In 1950, he left the farm and engaged in construction, working for Baker Quarry, B. Fred Brooks, O.C. Whitaker and Cameron Joyce & Company.

In 1952, he was employed by Mason & Hanger-Silas Mason Company at IAAP in Burlington as a safety inspector until June 1965. During that time, he was active in Boy Scouts and Little League, was president of Notre Dame High School Athletic Board and a member of Civil Defense and Knights of Columbus. His job took him to Jeffersonville, Ind., Albuquerque, N.M., and Camp Mercury, Nev., for training in special weapons, and he participated in “Operation Double Tracks” at the Nevada Test Site. Jack was selected to be a radio teletype operator and cryptographer on the Department of Defense Radio Network and also selected to a 16-man team to monitor accidents with special weapons, anywhere in the Defense Network. He was given a citation with the Safety Department for having set a “world record” for operating without a lost time accident, in the Hi-Explosives Industry.

He then moved back to Kahoka, where he opened the John Deere dealership on North Montgomery Street. In 1968, it was moved to a new building, located on Highway 136. He later joined long-time friend Delbert Shaffer and developed Edgewood Estates, a housing subdivision. He also built and developed Hickory Hills Campground on Highway 136 East adjacent to where he lived. In 1979, he sold these business ventures and relocated to Edmond, and in 1996, moved to Horseshoe Bay, Texas.

Jack became an avid fisherman, traveling all over the U.S., Canada, and Alaska in the quest for trout and salmon. His favorite place was Bennet Springs, Mo. He also kept active building sets for the local Hill Country Theatre. When he was not helping build something, somewhere for his family (which he loved doing), he was on the road, traveling the United States and abroad, attending live theatre, concerts and Spurs basketball games, which became one of his favorite pastimes.

Jack was a member of St. Paul Apostle Catholic Church in Horseshoe Bay, and a lifetime member of third-degree Knights of Columbus and a long-time member of Kahoka Kiwanis Club.

Left to cherish his memory are two sons, Mark S. (Laura) McAndrew of McKinney, Texas, and Michael J. McAndrew of Prosper, Texas; three daughters, Jeanne (Mark) Samii of Seguin, Lucinda “Cindy” Logsdon of Phoenix, Ariz., and Melinda “Mendy” (George) Roberts of San Antonio, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Theresa Baker; a son, John L. McAndrew III; two brothers, Thomas E. and Richard H. McAndrew; a sister, Mrs. Rose Ann Glazer; and a niece, Lori McAndrew.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kahoka. Burial will follow in the Kahoka Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Friday, with the family meeting with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka. A rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Cal Farley Boys’ Ranch, St. Michael’s Church or the Shrine of St. Patrick.

Suzanne "Sue" Hoerner Jackson

Suzanne “Sue” Hoerner Jackson bid adieu and so long to this life at 3 p.m. July 6, 2017, at Brookdale Senior Living Community, eager to reunite with family and friends after a long and honorable battle with Alzheimer’s – one she didn’t lose – the clock just ran out!

Sue was born on March 6, 1928, in Tulsa, Okla., to parents Richard Norris Hoerner and Kathryn Pontius. She survived her younger brother, Dick Hoerner Jr., whom she will be teasing again soon.

Sue grew up in Sand Springs, Okla., and Keokuk, with horses and horseback riding in her blood. She was a graduate of Earlham College (a family tradition), competing and later teaching within the Equestrian Program – a program and building that now bears her name and legacy. She also was a graduate of Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Chicago, where she was courted and heart won by C. Charles “Charlie” Jackson Jr., also from Keokuk.

Sue and Charlie Jackson raised their family in Wayzata, Minn., and were early members of the Wayzata Community Church and Wayzata Country Club. For more than 50 years, she dedicated herself to community causes and charities, including the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the Earlham Equestrian Program. If you ever bid on a needlepoint still life, our mother probably made it.

She already is deeply missed by her surviving children, Sandy Jackson (Steve Young), Chuck Jackson (Beverly), Kathy Parker (Steven) and Bruce Jackson (Marta); and six grandchildren, Jacob, Jack, Emily, Blake, Lucas and Mia; sister-in-law, Anne Hoerner; niece, Marie Hagberg (Carlton); and nephew, Wynn Hoerner (Colleen) – ready to continue the journey ahead.

Few will forget the many parties, political and charitable fundraising events that were had at homes in Wayzata, where so many happy times and friendships were made. A few legendary stories will remain sealed until further notice.

By her request, there will be no public service, with a private interment taking place with family members at the Hoerner Family Mausoleum in Keokuk.

Gifts in honor of Suzanne Hoerner Jackson may be directed to the Boys and Girls Club of the Twin Cities, Camp Voyageur, 690 Jackson St., St. Paul, MN 55130, or the Golay Endowment for the Equestrian program, Earlham College, Institutional Advancement Office, 801 National Road West, Drawer 193, Richmond, IN 47374.

Godspeed to a loving and dedicated mother. You will be forever cherished.
