William 'Billy' Jutte III, 58, Keokuk

William “Billy” Jutte lll, son of William and Dixie Clemmons Jutte, died on Jan. 9, 2017, at age 58.

Billy was born on June 27, 1958, in Keokuk.

He is survived by his parents and his sister, Julie.

Billy was a member of the First Congregational Church in Keokuk.

He graduated from Keokuk High School in 1976. He attended Southeastern Community College for two years before transferring to Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., where he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration. After college, he moved to Tucson, Ariz., where he worked as an adjuster for Farmers Insurance.

In 1985, he married Lisa Wallum.

Billy was an avid sports fan; he watched and played sports of all kinds. He was mentored by Dick Bishop on the basketball court and Carl Huiskamp on the golf course. He ran several marathons, traveled to Mexico for scuba diving, and even attended a Muhammed Ali fight.

Family and friends were important to Billy. He was blessed to have faithful friends like David Varner and Larry Beard.

A celebration of his life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk, with Pastor Shawn McAfee officiating. Burial will follow in Frazee Cemetery in Wayland, Mo.

Memorials may be made to United Presbyterian in Keokuk or Hoerner YMCA.

Betty Albright, 80, Keokuk

Betty Albright, 80, of Keokuk, passed away on Jan. 8, 2017, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Betty was born on Feb. 7, 1936, in Villisca, the daughter of Clark and Laura Martin Neal.

She was united in marriage to Dale Albright.

A long-time resident of Keokuk, Betty was a member of Emmanuel Methodist Church, where she sang and served as the choir director. She was employed at Jacks and later at Shopko at the jewelry counter, and retired in 2001.

Betty spent much of her free time volunteering for numerous activities at her church and the local schools. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed her collection of angels she gathered during her travels.

Betty is survived by two sons, Mike (Debra) Albright of Milton, Fla., and Robert (Genia) Albright of San Bernardino, Calif.; four grandchildren, Linda (John) Peacher of Keokuk, Chris (Dustin) Ison of Keokuk, Dylan Albright of Jackson, N.C., and Robert Albright II of San Bernardino, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Brittney (Darek) Ison, Cole Peacher, and Andrew Nelson, all of Keokuk; two great-great-grandchildren, Parker and Addalynn Lynch, both of Keokuk; her sister, Patricia Parrish of Banning, Calif.; and her nephew, Alan Parrish of Torrance, Calif.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Martin Neal.

A celebration of her life will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Centers, 917 Blondeau St., Keokuk, with Pastor David Barrett officiating.

Burial will follow in Etna Cemetery in Missouri.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with family meeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Emmanuel Methodist Church in Keokuk.

DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Centers is in charge of arrangements.

Stephen Dye, 63, Keokuk

Stephen DeLoss Dye, 63, of Keokuk, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017, at his home.

He was born Jan. 5, 1954, in Keokuk, the son of Robert Lee Sr. and Josephine Dresden Dye.

On Nov. 27, 1978, he was united in marriage to Katherine Daw in Kahoka, Mo. She survives.

Other survivors include four daughters, Dawn Adams of Fort Collins, Colo., Tonya Lee Holmes (Neal) of Keokuk, Bobbie Ismail (Mike) of Keokuk and Stephanie Sosa (Brau) of Knoxville, Tenn.; a son, Stephen Tyler Dye (Jeriann) of Keokuk; 17 grandchildren, Sabrina and Owen McMahan, Taylor Jobe, Billie Holmes, Mary K. Holmes, Elijah Ismail, Austin Salyers, Arim Ismail, Hamzah Ismail, Saundra Castillo, Ilana Castillo, Karina Ramirez, Natalia Sosa, Andrea Sosa, Bailey Hansen, Colt Dye and Lane Dye; a sister, Orma “Punky” Dye Andrews (Steve) of Keokuk; brothers, Robert Lee Dye Jr. (Cathy) and David Dye, both of Keokuk; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Karen and Chuck Colvin, Jim and Tia Daw, Eric and Kelly Daw and Dan and Teri Abston; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Dye Sr.; mother, Josephine Rebo; and a nephew, Jason Andrews.

Steve was a veteran of the U.S. Army and proudly served his country.

He had been the owner/operator of Economy Plumbing in Keokuk for the past 20 years.

Steve was devoted to his family, and his most favorite thing to do was spend time with them. His son, Tyler, was his right-hand man and they were together constantly. He loved shooting pool and restoring his classic cars. Steve enjoyed getting together with the guys and playing cards. He adored his special dog, Primo, who truly was man’s best friend. Steve leaves for his family a lifetime of wonderful memories. He will never be forgotten.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with Pastor Sylvia Tillman officiating. Burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the funeral home, with family meeting with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Mary Martin, 85, Iowa City

IOWA CITY – Mary Alyce Martin, 85, of Iowa City, formerly of Eldon, Mo., passed away Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, at Melrose Meadows Assisted Living.

A gathering will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Thursday at the Heritage Center, Milton. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery, Milton, with Pastor Chad Courter officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Disabled Veterans Foundation, Essence of Life Hospice, or Trinity Southern Baptist Church of Versailles, Mo.

Mary was born on July 1, 1931, in rural Scotland County, Mo., to Orin and Ruby Barton Cone.

She was united in marriage to Leo Richard Martin on March 6, 1969, in Versailles, Mo.; he preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 2012. Mary was a member of Trinity Southern Baptist Church of Versailles.

Mary enjoyed working with youth throughout much of her life including at the YMCA in Keokuk and with Leo in her church. She was happy when she was outside with her plants, on the Mississippi River or the Lake of the Ozarks. She loved all animals, and throughout her life she raised and cared for a large assortment of animals including dogs, cats, parakeets, chickens, ducks hummingbirds, a turkey and horses. Mary and Leo made many lasting friends and experienced much joy showing their Missouri foxtrotters and Tennessee walking horses including world grand champions.

In addition to her husband, Leo Martin, Mary was preceded in death by her stepdaughter, Joyce Hutcherson.

Mary is survived by her brother, Eugene Cone of Iowa City, formerly of Milton, and his three children, Pamela Humble of Hamilton, Ill., Richard Cone of North Liberty and Pat Cone-Fisher (Scott) of Iowa City; three stepchildren, Leo “Dick” Martin Jr. (Mary) of Eldon, Mo., James “Jim” Martin (Sandy) of Barnett, Mo., and Rose Miller (Ed) Moorseville, N.C.; stepson-in-law, Ron Hutcherson of Elk Creek, Va.; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Carol Bryant of Holbrook, Ariz.; her beloved Sheltie, Sadie; and many extended family members.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the kind staff at Melrose Meadows and Essence of Life Hospice.

Arthur Menke, 91, West Point

WEST POINT – Arthur William Menke, 91, of West Point, passed away at 9:25 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

He was born July 15, 1925, in rural Houghton, the son of Henry H. and Catherine Holtkamp Menke.

Survivors include his wife, Joan of West Point; and four children, including locally, Jennifer (Roger) Fullenkamp of West Point and Sam (Suzanne) Menke of Donnellson.

His body has been entrusted to Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

Friends may call after noon Tuesday at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m., with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. that evening at the funeral home.

A memorial mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point, with Father Dennis Hoffman as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in West Point, with full military rites by the West Point American Legion Holtz-Geers Post No. 668. A luncheon will follow at the West Point American Legion.

Barbara Varner, 79, Keokuk

Barbara Jean Varner, 79, of Keokuk, died at 3:44 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at Great River Hospice House in Burlington.

Barbara was born July 29, 1937, in Keokuk, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret O’Day Ette.

She was united in marriage to Lloyd McLaughlin. He preceded her in death in 1965. She married George “Jody” Varner and he preceded her in death in 1984.

She lived most of her life in Keokuk and attended St. Vincent schools and St. Peters Catholic Church.

Barbara enjoyed crocheting and loved to travel. She especially enjoyed the Mississippi River and watching the eagles. Barbara collected chicken figurines and enjoyed eating chicken. She dearly loved her grandchildren.

She is survived by four children, David (Brenda) McLaughlin of Georgia, Lloyd McLaughlin of Keokuk, Patty (Bob) Traver of Zion, Ill., and Dennis McLaughlin of Keokuk; a stepdaughter, Sheila (Gene) Davis of Wilmot, Wis.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; five brothers and sisters, Margaret Belknap of the Quad Cities, Mary Claybaugh of the Quad Cities, Mike Ette of Center Point, Janet Rhodes of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Donald Ette of Loveland, Colo.; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; two children, Susan Varner and James McLaughlin; stepson, Phil Varner; and brothers and sisters, Joe Ette Jr., Richard Ette and Helen Ette.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Center, 1212 Concert St., Keokuk, with the Rev. Marty Goetz officiating.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the family of Barbara Varner.

DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Centers is in charge of arrangements.

Anthony 'Tony' McCarty, 31, Keokuk

Anthony W. “Tony” McCarty, 31, of Keokuk, died Sunday, Oct. 30 2016, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Tony was born Jan. 15, 1985, in Keokuk, the son of Lonnie McCarty and Terri Clark.

A lifelong resident of Keokuk and the Hamilton, Ill., area, Tony was self-employed in construction.

He followed NASCAR and was a huge Hawkeyes and Colts fan. He loved fishing while on the river; that was his most peaceful time. Tony loved to sing karaoke.

Tony is survived by his two boys, Conner and Brayden McCarty of Montrose; his father, Lonnie McCarty of Keokuk; stepmother, Jane; his mother, Terri (Larry) Vahle of Quincy, Ill.; four brothers, Tyler McCarty, Tim McCarty, Dillan McCarty and Sean McCarty; five sisters, Whitney (Brent) Morgan and Evita Helm, both of Quincy, and Danielle McCarty, Samantha McCarty and Chloe McCarty, all of Keokuk; maternal grandmother, Sandy Clark; maternal grandfather, Dennis (Laury) Clark; maternal grandmother, Evelyn McDowell; paternal grandmother, Bernice McCarty; maternal great-grandmother, Betty McDowell; a nephew; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and cousins.

Tony is preceded in death by his brother, Lonnie Joseph McCarty Jr.; paternal grandfather, Charles McCarty; maternal grandfather, Terry McDowell; great-grandfather, Erine McDowell; stepfather, Richard Helm; and nephew, Ethan Morgan.

A celebration of his life was at 1 p.m. Saturday at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Centers, 917 Blondeau St., Keokuk, with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery.

Visitation was at 3 p.m. Friday at DeJong-Greaves, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials have been established.
