Lorena Dickerson, 95, Carthage, Ill.
CARTHAGE, Ill. – Lorena May Dickerson, 95, of Carthage, Ill., passed away at 2:35 a.m. Friday, April 7, 2017, at Heartland Healthcare Center in Macomb, Ill.
Lorena was born Nov. 26, 1921, the daughter of Charles and Frances Elizabeth Coker Dickerson in Carthage.
She had worked as a clerk and bookkeeper for Sherrick Drug in Carthage and also had managed the Woodbine Movie Theatre in Carthage for many years, taking tickets, running the concessions and even running the movies at times.
Lorena is survived by two great-nephews, Michael and Richard Hursh; and a cousin, Wanda Brodie.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Evalena Dickerson Schneider; and her brother, Virgil Claude Dickerson.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage. Printy Funeral Home in Carthage is in charge of arrangements.

Lucelle Rachel Beatty
Born in Palo, Iowa on January 1, 1900
Departed on December 28, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids,, IA.

Lucelle Rachel Lewis Beatty, 98 years, of Center Point, entered the presence of her Lord on December 27, 2009. Memorial services at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Per Lucelle’s wishes there will be no visitation.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Kenneth Lewis. Survivors include daughters Barbara Failor (William) of Ankeny and Eloise Dennis (Dr. Robert) of Lewis Bottoms, a son Lt. Col. (Ret.) Joseph Beatty of Center Point, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She was born February 2, 1911 in Palo, to Claude Ira and Alice McClintock Lewis. Lucelle graduated from Palo Consolidated School and attended Coe College and Iowa State College. She married Archie C. Beatty on September 28, 1929. He died March 26, 1987. Her great-grandfather, Thomas Lewis, became the first family to settle west of the Cedar River in 1839. He received title to his farm in Fayette township as a land grant patent signed by President James K. Polk, and the area was known as Lewis Bottoms. Lucelle remembered fondly her heritage in Lewis Bottoms and contributed much to the recording of its history. Her wealth of knowledge was shared to the very end.
She was employed at Younkers Department Store for over 20 years. She was a member of First Christian Church, Green’s Grove Sewing Circle, Center Point Historical Society, Apple Creek Card Club, Federated Garden Club, and Knights of Pythias.
She enjoyed piecing quilts, needlework, flowers, and especially cooking and baking which she shared abundantly with family, neighbors and friends. Even in her last few years she was able to remain in her home with her cats and Jesus as her constant companions.
Memorials may be given to Lewis Bottoms Heritage Fund at Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation.

Roy Sapp, 76, Keokuk
Roy M. Sapp, 76, of Keokuk, passed away on April 12, 2017, at his home after a courageous battle with ALS.
Roy was born Sept. 20, 1940, in Keokuk, the son of William and Ruth Marie Smith Sapp.
He was united in marriage to Alice Petty on July 12, 1958, in Keokuk. She survives.
A lifelong resident of the Keokuk area, Roy was employed as a traffic and customer service manager at Midwest Carbide Corporation for 37 years, until his retirement in 1997. He was an avid golfer, and could often be found playing rounds at Deer Run Golf Course in Hamilton, Ill. He loved watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and bowling, and spent 20 years wintering in Texas. Roy also was a member of the Swing Easy Dance Club and the Circle Square B Dance Club. He especially loved dancing with his wife, Alice.
Roy is survived by his wife, Alice of Keokuk; his son, Todd (Teresa) Sapp of Oklahoma City, Okla.; his daughters, Kim (Mike) Steinkruger of Charles City and Dena (KJ) Cannon of Keokuk; his brother, William A. (Ruth) Sapp of Ashland City, Tenn.; grandchildren, Jessica (Joe) O’Neil, Matthew Sapp, Lori Cannon, Amber (Andy) Hall, Andrew Sapp, Emily Terry, David Steinkruger and Jonathan Steinkruger; great-grandchildren, Daniel Sapp, Tyler Durham, Derick Peltz, Hayden Sapp, Jason Sapp, Grace and Molly O’Neil, Tres Cannon, Heidi Cannon-Spring and Brayden and Jackson Hall; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, and his stepfather, Ernest D. Curfman.
A celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Centers, 917 Blondeau St., Keokuk, with burial to follow in Sandusky Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, directly before the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to U. of I. Foundation, 1 West Park Road, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, IA 52244-4550. Designate donations for ALS Research Fund, Account No. 30-514-007.

Wendell Ash, 76, Wyaconda, Mo.
WYACONDA, Mo. – Wendell M. Ash, 76, of Wyaconda, Mo., died Thursday, April 13, 2017, at Scotland County Hospital in Memphis, Mo.
Funeral services are pending at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka, Mo.

Marilyn Peper, 89, Waco, Texas
WACO, Texas - Marilyn Schmidt Peper, 89, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, in Waco, Texas.
She was born on Feb. 6, 1928, in Keokuk. She was a graduate of Keokuk High School where her older brother had bestowed on her the nickname Bones in her freshman year, a name that stuck with her throughout high school and followed her in later years in her hometown, and Iowa State Teachers College (now known as the University of Northern Iowa), where she obtained a teaching certificate. After graduation, she began flying as a hostess with Trans World Airlines, where she met a pilot, Howard L. Peper, whom she later married on May 20, 1951. After several years in Keokuk and then in the Chicago area where they began raising their three sons, they moved to Dallas, Texas, in 1965. When her husband died prematurely in 1968, Marilyn returned to school at Southern Methodist University, receiving her master of liberal arts degree, and began many years of teaching mathematics related courses in Dallas area public schools and the local community college. She also focused the balance of her life on the upbringing and support of her three sons.
Marilyn took up painting later in life and loved to paint landscapes. She was a diehard Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers fan, and always enjoyed playing bridge and Scrabble and working crossword puzzles. She also especially enjoyed the lifelong friendships and support of her sisters in P.E.O. and hosting small dinners for friends.
Marilyn is survived by her three sons, John Peper of Houston, Texas, Dr. William “Bill” Peper (Amy) of Crawford, Texas, and James “Jim” Peper of Dallas; six grandchildren, Adriane Mraz (Danny) and William “Will” Peper of Houston, Austin Peper of Belton, Texas, Barron Peper of Seattle, Wash., Hanna Fischer of Tyler, Texas, and Blaine Fischer of Crawford; three great-grandchildren, Meredith, Marshall and Madeline Mraz, of Houston; and many nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Ella Leu Schmidt; her brother and sister, Carl Schmidt Jr. and Julia “Judy” Huiskamp; her daughter-in-law, Ann Peper; and her granddaughter, Amanda Peper.
A graveside service and burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk, with arrangements having been made through Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Lela Liegerot, 89, Hamilton, Ill.
HAMILTON, Ill. – Lela Louise Liegerot, 89, of Hamilton, Ill., formerly of Keokuk, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017.
Graveside inurnment will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Keokuk National Cemetery, with Brother Bill Hauser officiating.
DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Centers in Keokuk is in charge of arrangements.

Arminda 'Mindy' Bishop, 97, Keokuk
Arminda Grace “Mindy” Bishop, 97, died April 11, 2017, at Mercy Hospice-Johnston.
Mindy was born July 19, 1919, at her home in the Drake University neighborhood. Her parents were Ora and Frederick Bishop.
Arminda attended school in Des Moines and graduated from North High School in 1937. She continued her education at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines.
Mindy was employed in Des Moines at Adel Clay and at Plumb Supply. She moved to Keokuk in 1958 and began employment with Hoerner Boxes Inc., editing “The Box Score” trade magazine. With the merger of Hoerner and Waldorf, Mindy relocated to St. Paul, Minn., from 1966 to 1969. She returned to Keokuk in 1969, working for the Daily Gate City newspaper until 1972. In 1973, she returned to work for Hoerner-Waldorf in Keokuk, as the plant personnel assistant there until retirement in 1981.
Mindy was a talented musician who shared her faith and voice throughout her life by singing in Des Moines and Keokuk area churches and community events. Serving the community was a vital part of Mindy’s life. She was a leader in the Keokuk Concert Board, Lee County Historical Society, the BPW Board, and the Iowa Society for the Preservation of Historical Landmarks.
Arminda was preceded in death by her parents, Ora and Frederick Bishop.
She is survived by close friends, Susan Tinder, Joan Cramer, Bonnie Gilpin and many others.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Centers, 917 Blondeau St., Keokuk.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.
Burial will be Monday in Oaklawn Cemetery, Oakland.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Keokuk Fine Arts Council, and Des Moines North High School Alumni Association.

Lola Brown, 85, Montrose
MONTROSE – Lola J. Brown, 85, of Montrose, died Monday, April 10, 2017, at Fort Madison Community Hospital.
She was born on Aug. 26, 1931, in Fairbault, Minn., the daughter of William and Joy Shepard Wulf.
She graduated from Keokuk High School with the Class of 1949.
On Nov. 26, 1950, in Keokuk, Lola was united in marriage to Larry Brown.
She is survived by her husband, Larry of Montrose; a son, Gordon (Linda) Brown of Montrose; two daughters, Diane (Dennis) Grossman of Farmington and Carla (Curtis) Varnold of Parker, Colo.; six grandchildren, Denise (Jason) Evans, Dawn (Eric) Conklin, Dana (Justin) Huling, Joshua (Jillian) Varnold and Nathan Varnold; two stepgrandchildren, Craig Carter and Rebekah Carter; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ronald Brown; and a sister, Marian Almendinger.
Lola was a member of the United Methodist Church in Montrose. She also was a member of the King’s Daughters and the Red Hat Society and served on the Montrose Library Board and the Election Board for many years.
She enjoyed bowling, playing card games, working crossword puzzles and reading. She was a skilled seamstress, and also made knitted and crocheted projects for her family and friends. She was a wonderful cook and made a delicious pot of ham and bean soup. Everyone looked forward to her Christmas cookies, raisin bread and cinnamon rolls. Lola enjoyed being a homemaker and farmer’s wife, and spent her life making a wonderful home for her husband and children.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with the Rev. Goldie Laymon officiating. Private burial will be in the Montrose Cemetery.
Visitation will be an hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with family meeting with friends at that time.
Memorials may be made to Montrose Methodist Church or Montrose Library.

Patricia A. Anderson
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on January 9, 1946
Departed on June 27, 2011. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Service: Thursday, June 30, 2011
Patricia A. Anderson, 65 of Cedar Rapids died Monday June 27, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer that was diagnosed in November of 2010. Memorial services at 11:00 AM on Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Private inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 6 PM on Wednesday.
Survivors include a daughter, Angela (Daren) Campbell of Jacksonville, North Carolina, a son Aaron (Amber) of Spooner, Wisconsin; her mother, Genevieve Hall of Cedar Rapids and two sisters, Sheri Yancey of Cedar Rapids and Judy (Earl) Sigwarth of Toddville. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Andy and Chloe Campbell and A.J. Anderson; two nephews, Trent Sigwarth and Derek Yancey; and a dear friend, Patti Welter. She was preceded in death by her father in December 2005 and a nephew Travis Sigwarth in July of 2006.
Patricia was born on January 9, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Donald and Genevieve Fritz Hall. Patricia graduated from Jefferson High School in 1964 and later from the Young School of Cosmetology. She was a hair stylist for over 45 years the last 24 years at the JC Penney Styling Salon.
Patricia enjoyed going to the casino, baking, gardening, taking care of her three kitties, and especially the time she spent with her beloved family and many many friends.
A memorial fund has been established in Patricia’s name.
