Edwin Worth Bruere, age 80, passed away October 10, 2008 in Omaha, NE. Formerly of Cedar Rapids, IA. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lyle M. Bruere, and his parents, Worth and Rose Bruere. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Nina and Dr. Gilbert Head, Omaha, NE; son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Diane Bruere, Glen Ellyn, IL; grandchildren, Cassandra, Spencer, and Talia Head; Forrest, Adam, and Maxwell Bruere.

Ed was a graduate of Alliance High School and the University of Nebraska. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked 40 years with Bishop Buffet. He started his career in Omaha. He continued his training in Rockford Illinois, where he became assistant manager. He then transferred to Cedar Rapids, where he worked his way up from assistant to acting manager at the downtown Bishops and to manager at Lindale Plaza. He later became Vice-President and he joined the Board of Directors. His friends said, "He always spoke well of everyone and looked out for the welfare of other people." In his retirement he enjoyed volunteering at his church and spending time with his valued friends and family. He was a kind and gentle man who will be dearly missed.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 22, at 11:00 A.M., at Christ Episcopal Church, 220 40th St. NE. Memorials to the church.

Gary D. Brislawn
Born in Central City, IA on December 4, 1942

Gary D. Brislawn, 65, of Center Point, died Saturday November 22, 2008 in his home from a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Center Point. Friends may call on Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Monday from 4-7 p.m. and after 10:00 a.m. at the church onTuesday. The Rev. Mike Ellson and Ken Graham will officiate. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of Jeannie of 39 years, a daughter, Denise Allison (Brian) of Marion, and a son, Aaron Brislawn (Denise) of Center Point, his mother, Violet Brislawn of Marion, a sister, Diana Smith of Hiawatha, and two brothers, Wilber Brislawn of Colorado and Larry Brislawn of Hiawatha. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob, Ben Katelyn and Kailee.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Gary was born December 4, 1942 in Central City, the son of Owen and Violet Knapp Brislawn. He married Jeannie O’ Deen on September 6, 1969 in Cedar Rapids. Gary was employed at Quality Auto in Marion as a front end specialist and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Center Point. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Gary enjoyed working on cars, boats and spending time at the cabin. His favorite was spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a very loving husband, dad and grandpa. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Instead of flowers, memorial may be sent to Iowa City Hospice, Center Point
United Methodist Church, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.

George Benning
Born in Glandorf, Ohio on May 26, 1926
Departed on November 24, 2008. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

George Benning, beloved husband, devoted father and cherished grandfather passed away on November 24, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center, following a prolonged illness. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 28, 2008, from 5-8 p.m, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with a rosary at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., with burial with military honors following at Mt. Calvery Cemetery. Following the burial, a luncheon will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Family Center.

George is survived by his wife Helen (Kennedy). Along with his wife he is survived by his seven children: Kathy Irvine, Richard Benning (Peggy), Tom Benning (Sheryl), Ray Benning (Valerie), Mike Benning, Mary Noland (Jim) and Jenny Clendenin (J.T.); his brother Tom Benning (Donna); and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents Henry and Katherine (Kortokrax) Benning and eight siblings: Jerome, Raymond, Anthony, Richard, Dorothy, Ruth, Adeline and Mary Benning.

George was born on May 26, 1924, in Glandorf, Ohio. He attended Central Catholic
High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After high school he served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1949 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Singing with the Notre Dame Glee Club was one of the highlights of his college experience. He later received his masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of California-Berkley. George worked for Farnsworth in Fort Wayne, Indiana and General Motors AC Sparkplug in Milwaukee,Wisconsin. He ultimately accepted a job with Collins Radio Company, later known as Rockwell Collins International, rising to the position of Vice President of Advanced Technology & Engineering. He remained in the position until he retired in 1990.

Most importantly, George had a tremendous love of life. He cheered for Notre Dame and the Chicago Cubs, golfed with friends, and enjoyed a competitive game of bridge with his family. George was a very active member of his church St. Pius X where he served on numerous committees. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. George was a passionate supporter of education and served on many advisory boards. He also loved to learn. He consistently challenged himself, devouring books and magazines and a diverse array of subjects including religion, politics, avionics and astronomy.

Of all George’s activities, he cherished spending time with his family the most. Despite his professional accomplishments his family came first. George will be remembered most, however, for his sharp wit, sense of humor, positive attitude, loyalty and desire for the happiness of his family and friends. He remained strong and upbeat until his last day. Finally, he wanted his wife, children and grandchildren to all know he loved them dearly. His love of God, family and friends was apparent to anyone who may have known him. All will miss his exemplary faith, values and smile. The family would like to thank all the staff at Mercy Medical Center and St Luke’s Hospital for the care they gave to George this past year.

Lillian V. Bishop
Born in Ottumwa, IA on February 10, 1921

Lillian Violet Bishop, 87, a resident of Heritage Nursing & Rehab, died there Wednesday November 26, 2008 following a long illness. Memorial services: 3:30 p.m. Monday December 1, 2008 at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel, where friends may call after 2:30 p.m. Inurnment: Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret (Richard) Hamed of Cedar Rapids, and Sandra (Carlton) Goughnour of Fargo, North Dakota, six grandchildren, John (Kelly) Holley, Susan (Peter) Cacioppo, Brian Hamed, Erin Goughnour, Jennifer Goughnour, and Molly Goughnour, and five great grandchildren, Keagen, Brennan, Jacob, Julia and Lexus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merrill Hoyt Bishop, her parents, two brothers, Harold and Jack Heap, and a sister, Lucille Johnson.
Lillian was born February 10, 1921 in Ottumwa, the daughter of Ernest and Anna Olson Heap. She married Merrill Hoyt Bishop on August 23, 1946 in Ottumwa. Lillian was a member of Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids, past elder and organist at the East End Presbyterian church in Ottumwa, and member of McDowell Musicians Club, and American Guild of Organist. Wilfred Joseph Donnelly

Wilfred “Bill” Joseph Donnelly formerly of Cedar Rapids passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 5, 2011 at Don and Marilyn Anderson Hospice Care in Madison, Wisconsin. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church by the Rev. Gerald Condon and Rev. David Beckman. Interment: Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Bill is survived by his loving wife Kay of 66 years, Madison, Wisconsin, son, Tom (Nancy) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, son, Tim of Madison, Wisconsin. Son, Terry (Donna) of Madison, Wisconsin, and a daughter, Lisa Donnelly Angell of Mt. Prospect, Illinois, 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; James and Mary Donnelly, brothers, James, Thomas, John, a sister, MaryAnn Donnelly Parret, a daughter, Mary Lane Donnelly and a granddaughter, Tatem Donnelly.

Bill was born on March 14, 1918 in Cascade, Iowa. He and Kathryn Margaret Renk were united in marriage on January 22, 1945 at Sacred Heart Church in Monticello, Iowa. Shortly after WWII, having served 7 years in the United States Navy and discharged with the rank of Chief Petty Officer, he and Kay moved to Cedar Rapids. They raised their 4 children and made numerous and long time friends. Bill worked at Culver Motors as Parts/Service Manager in Cedar Rapids before joining and ultimately retiring from the Post Office in 1983. He and Kay moved to Madison, Wisconsin in 2001 to be closer to their son Terry and his family. Nothing made Bill’s Irish eyes smile more than being with family, friends and reminiscing about growing up in Cascade. His 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren were a great source of pride and joy to him. He leaves them with countless happy memories and the chance to tell of the times spent with their Grandpa Bill. During his years as a husband and father he gave his family unconditional love, encouragement, a set of values to live by and always led by example. His faith in God and mankind was unwavering. Bill will be missed forever but never forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory can be made to St. Matthew Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids or Camp Courageous, Monticello, Iowa.

Judith K. Birgerson
Born in Crawfordsville,Indiana on September 11, 1945

Judith K. Birgerson, 63, of 3841 Lost Valley Rd SE, died Wednesday November 26, 2008 in the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy of complications resulting from a 35-year battle with Systemic Lupus. Friends may call on Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dr. Kay Slocum. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer Boettger (Allan) of Cedar Rapids, two grandsons, Jordan and Micah, two sisters, Pat Cleveland of Sherwood, Oregon, and Jean Huff (Stan) of West Melbourne, Florida, and an uncle, Archie Krout (Alberta) of Crawfordsville, Indiana. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Judie was born September 11, 1945 in Crawfordsville, Indiana, the daughter of Lyle and Eva Kendall Powell. She graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1963 and the University of Indianapolis (then Indiana Central College) in 1967. She taught at McKinley Jr. High School before joining Rockwell Collins where she worked for 32 years. She was serving as Director of Information Services before retiring from Rockwell in 2004. She was named Woman of the Year by the American Business Women's Association in 1976 and was inducted into the Univerisity of Indianapolis Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.
Judie was a member of First Lutheran Church, P.E.O. Chapter MG, and the University of Indianapolis Alumni Association. She enjoyed journaling, her book club, the WNBA, and was an avid Yankees, Colts and Pacers fan. Her greatest joy was her family and friends, most especially her grandsons. She was a source of kindness, support and inspiration to all with whom she met. Her strength and perseverance will never be forgotten.
