Wanda M. Gibbs 77, a resident of the Solon Nursing Care Center, formally of Cedar Rapids, died January 23, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Services will be held at 3 PM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Dr. Barbara Schlachter of Christ Episcopal Church will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Monday in Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, and Tuesday after 2:30 PM at the chapel.

Surviving to honor her memory are her three daughters, Cindy (Michael) Fountain of Cedar Rapids, Gayla (Frank) Stastny of Newhall, Iowa, and Laura (Steve) Kirk of Narka, Kansas, a brother Lee Borron of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, sister Barbara Payne of New Braunfels, Texas, nine grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother Everett.

Wanda was born February 16, 1932 at Three Sands, Oklahoma to Everett and Lucille Harp Borron. She married Bob Lee Gibbs on July 31, 1949 in Sedan, Kansas. He died in 1980.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Janice Jean Grout, 71, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at the St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Dr. T. Edwards Breed, Vicar Divaker Pathak, and Rev. Mark Kukkonen will officiate with entombment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Janice was born December 12, 1938 on her parents Roger and Bernice Pearson’s farm near Postville, IA, and passed away in her sleep on February 6, 2010 in her home. Jan graduated from Luana High School in 1956.
Jan and Marvin were married on July 3, 1970 in Marion, IA. Survivors include her husband Marvin. Son Mark (Tammy) Graybill of Rochester, MN, and sister Judy (Lyle) Boebel of Cedar Rapids. Grandchildren Michael Monahan, Stephanie Graybill, Christopher (Sohkeng) Graybill, Aaron Graybill of Rochester, MN, and Kayla Grout of WV. Great grandchildren Liheng Graybill, Isaiah Monahan of Rochester, MN. Nephews Larry (Gina) Boebel of Swisher, James Boebel of Cedar Rapids. Great nephews Nathan, Kory, and Brandon Boebel. Great niece Lindy Boebel. Stepchildren Tom Grout of WV and Paige Grout of Cedar Rapids.
Brothers-in-law: Donald (Helen) of Creston, Dale (Jean) of Riverside, CA, Harold (Pearl) of Mount Ayr, Charles of Newton, Ken (La Donna) of Cedar Rapids, Ron (Nancy) of Des Moines, Robert of Berwick; sister-in-law Ruth (John) Hoy of Adel.
She was preceded in death by her parents Roger and Bernice Pearson.
Jan was employed by various companies such as Bell Telephone Company, Collins Radio, Skelgas, and retired from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Jan loved music starting with the clarinet and piano in high school and playing the piano and organ mostly for church activities, and singing in her church choir and Midwest Chorale. She was a member of the Voices of Hope during Freedom Festival. Jan enjoyed bowling and golf leagues. Jan gave freely of her time by volunteering at Community Free Health Clinic and various church activities and service projects. Jan enjoyed other leisure activities including Yoga at the Fusion Yoga Studio and trips with her husband with a travel club. Jan enjoyed her walks outside and feeding the birds on her back deck. Jan was a devout Christian, showing Christ-like love for everyone she knew and encountered.
A memorial fund has been established to benefit the Community Free Health Clinic, 947-14th Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52401. Phone # 319-363-0416.

Mary Martha Gilmore-Deke
Born in Independence, Iowa on September 23, 1947
Departed on March 19, 2010. Resided in Marion, Iowa.

Mary Martha Gilmore-Deke, 62, of 1905 Hunters Creek Way, Marion, passed away Friday morning, March 19, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Rev. Greg Williamson will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and at the church after 9:30 AM on Monday.

Survivors include her husband Sonny, son Mark Anthony Gilmore and friend Jennifer Gard of Phoenix, Arizona, siblings, Virginia Sleeper of Independence, Jerald (Dixie) Smith of Waverly, Karen (Jim) Connell of Independence, Clifford (Pam) Smith of Burlingame, Kansas, and Diane (John) Kurtz of Independence, step-daughters Sonda (Jeff) Maneman of Marion, and Kamila Demuth and friend Robert Wells of Cedar Rapids, step-grandchildren Jacob, Ryan, Samuel, and Cole, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Lois Smith, first husband Steve Gilmore, and a brother-in-law George Sleeper.

Mary was born September 23, 1947 in Independence, Iowa, to Theodore and Lois Anderson Smith. She graduated from Independence High School in 1965, and from Paris Academy of Beauty in Cedar Rapids. She moved to Phoenix in 1971 working in various areas of insurance claims. She married Steve Gilmore. They had a son Mark in 1974. In 2007 she moved to Marion, Iowa, and married Sonny Deke on June 30, 2007. She continued to work from her home until her retirement in September of 2009. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She volunteered at Mercy Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed gardening, traveling, and spending time with her family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 915 27th Street, Marion, Iowa, 52302, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Lloyd G. Goettel
Born in Allamakee County, IA on February 2, 1914

Lloyd G. Goettel, 96, a resident of the Meth-Wick Community, died May 4, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Memorial services will take place at 4:00 PM, Saturday, May 8, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids. Rev. Thomas E.S. Miller will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, May 7, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church. Private family inurnment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Surviving are his children, Bruce (Sharon) Goettel of Virginia Beach, VA, Dennis (Karla) Goettel, Steven Goettel, and Susan Goettel all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Dan (Kelly) Goettel, Curtis (Vickie) Goettel, Lisa Goettel, and Bryan (Kate Melloy) Goettel; great grandchildren, Victoria, Austin, and Georgia; brother John (Dorothy) Goettel of Harpers Ferry; brother-in-law Donald Ebinger of Flagstaff, AZ; and sister-in-law Marjorie Ebinger of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Velma, sisters Lois Munz and Alice Mae Schild, and brother Arlyss Goettel.

Lloyd Gottlieb Goettel was born February 2, 1914 on the farm homesteaded by his family in rural Allamakee County, Iowa, the son of Daniel and Esther (Hacklander) Goettel. He attended Prairie Lafayette School and was a 1931 graduate from Waterville High School. Prior to college he worked on the family farm. In 1938 he graduated from Western Union College (Westmar). He was united in marriage to Velma K. Ebinger on September 10, 1938 in Des Moines, Iowa. They shared 67 years of blessed marriage. Velma preceded him in death in 2005.

His teaching career spanned 43 years which included positions at Linn Grove, Thompson, and Mt. Vernon schools. In 1943 he commenced 38 years of teaching in Cedar Rapids at Franklin High School/Junior High School. At Franklin Senior High School he was the head varsity track and sophomore football coach. When it became Franklin Junior High School he continued as freshman football and track coach. He officiated football and basketball for 34 years and served as the president of the Cedar Rapids Athletic Officials Association. For his athletic achievements he was inducted into the Westmar College Athletic Hall of Fame, and received the Don Taft Memorial Award from the LFCA. He was a gifted carpenter and many Cedar Rapids homes exhibit his craftsmanship.

Lloyd was previously a member of Salem EUB Church. Since 1960, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was an elder, trustee, Sunday school teacher and youth advisor, making many mission trips with the church’s youth. Upon retirement he and Velma managed the Linn County Community Food Bank for 10 years. He was a member of Lions Club International for 25 years where he served as the Sight Committee chairman. He won the Lion of the Year Award and received the Lions Club Melvin Jones Fellow Award for his humanitarian service to the community. In 1992 he and Velma moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas where they were members of the Bella Vista Presbyterian Church. In 2002 Lloyd and Velma returned to Cedar Rapids, making their home at the Meth-Wick Community.

Lloyd touched thousands of lives through his teaching, coaching, church and community. He lived his life in the comfort of God’s love and grace. We know that he is now joyfully embraced by his Lord and all those faithful family and friends that have gone before.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the following: First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids; Horizons/Flood Them with Love, 819 5th Street SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52401; or the Orville Rust Scholarship Fund at Washington High School.

The family would like to extend their grateful appreciation to the entire staff at St. Luke’s Hospice for the extraordinary care given to Lloyd and his family.

Ivyl Eleanor Graessle
Born in Lamotte, Iowa on September 22, 1915

Ivyl Eleanor Graessle, 94, died May 6, 2010, at Meth-Wick Manor. She was surrounded by family and secure in the knowledge that she was greatly loved. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 10, at First Lutheran Church. Rev. Dr. Kay Slocum will officiate. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Ivyl was born Sept. 22, 1915, in LaMotte, Iowa, to August and Sylvia (Kringle) Felderman. She met Harold Matthew Graessle at a dance in Dubuque and they began a 65-year marriage on Sept. 24, 1932. They danced into their 80s, often in ballrooms with live music such as the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. Ivyl once danced with Welk himself.

She and Harold raised two daughters. When their youngest was in high school, Ivyl began a short but enjoyable career as a dental assistant in Webster City. They spent their retirement years in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids and wintered in Arizona. They celebrated their 50th anniversary by riding in a gondola in Venice.

Ivyl’s passions were her family, cooking, dining, and stylish dressing. She was an outstanding bridge player. She loved life, had a wonderful sense of humor, and was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren’s biggest fan. She was a lifelong Lutheran and a member of First Lutheran Church. In her final 13 years she experienced great quality of life at the Meth-Wick Community, where she was nurtured by friends and staff.

Ivyl is survived by two daughters, Patricia Ann (Kenneth) Lauer, of Cedar Rapids, and Shirley May (Sherwin) Taradash, of Sarasota, Fla.; four grandchildren, Dee Ann Rexroat (Imran Farooqi) of Mount Vernon, Iowa; David (Prudence) Rexroat of Overland Park, Kan.; Scott (Kecia) Lauer of Cedar Rapids; and Brian (Becki) Lauer of St. Louis; seven great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lyle (Lillian) Felderman, of Brea, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, sister, and two brothers.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran or Iowa Hospice.
