Shelly S. Mills Hoelzen, 54, of 917 21st Avenue S.W. died Tuesday August 14, 2007 in St. Luke's Hospital following a long illness. Services: 2:00 p.m. Saturday at New Life Community Church by the Rev. Kurt Jergensmeier. A private inurnment will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A visitation will be today from 5-7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial- Grant Wood Chapel.
Survivors include her husband of 32 years, Gregory D. Hoelzen, three daughters, Helena R. Mills, Holly A. Hoelzen, Heather L. Hoelzen and a son, Eric R. Hoelzen Brooke McGuire all of Cedar Rapids, her siblings, Chuck Mills of Plainfield, Connecticut, Christine Mills of Cedar Rapids, Pam Mills-Simon of Gig Harbor, Washington, and John Mills of Highmore, South Dakota, two grandchildren, Keaton and Machenzie of Cedar Rapids.
Her parents preceded her in death.
Shelly was born November 18, 1952 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Charles and Helen Donisthorpe Mills. She married Gregory Hoelzen on May 13, 1975 in Burlington. Shelly was a childcare provider. Shelly was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Her love for children has shown through the loving care of her grandchildren and her work at Dollhouse Nursery and Early Beginnings/My First School. Shelly enjoyed the simple pleasure in life such as her family, music, nature, cooking, animals, games and laughter.
Memorials may be made to Make A Wish Foundation in lieu of flowers.
Reminder: The visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Grant Wood Chapel at 800 Second Avenue S.E.

Herbert Charles Hunt

Herbert Charles, 89, died Tuesday August 14, 2007 in his daughter's home in Dexter, Michigan, of congestive heart failure. A funeral service will be held at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. Fourth Ave. Ann Arbor, on Friday 3:00pm with visiting at 2:00pm. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Survivors include his daughter, Nancy Mike Poulin, his son, Jno Anne Hunt; grandchildren Chris Sarah Ramsay, Scott Margaret Ramsay, Gianna Hunt, Jno Hunt Jr., and Brendan Hunt; a step grandchild Jennifer Aaron York; great-grandchildren Lee Anne, Henry, and Anna Ramsay; and two brothers Stanley and Paul Mary Hunt. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Harriett Mae Greer Hunt, and his two sisters, Lois Parker and Clarice Morris. Herbert was born April 8, 1918 in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Leland and Ruth Shaw Hunt. He met Harriett while attending Coe College. They were married June 7, 1940 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Iowa, where they were faithful members for 66 years. Herbert worked for Allen Motor Company for two years before going to work for Quaker Oats for 42 years. He loved to work outside in his garden, work on his stamp collection, and play cribbage with his family. Memorial contributions may be made to Arbor Hospice and Homecare, Oak Valley Dr., Ann Arbor, MI 48103

Gary Lee Harbit
Born in Ft. Dodge on July 30, 1946

Gary Lee Harbit, 61, of 2608 197th Avenue, Manchester, died Tuesday September 4, 2007 in St. Luke's Hospital following a long illness. Services: 11:00 A.M. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Manchester by the Rev. Jean Rabary. The visitation will be on Thursday from 4-8 P.M. at First Lutheran Church in Manchester. Burial: Oakland Cemetery, Manchester. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife Norma; a stepson, Randy Mary Walton of Victor; a step daughter, Gina Walton of LaPorte City; and 6 grandchildren, Ashley, Sean, Dakota, Hunter, Brayden, and Blake. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Gary was born July 30, 1946 in Ft. Dodge, the son of John and Leona Cernin Harbit. He married Norma Olson on November 30, 1985 in Cedar Rapids. Gary graduated from Washington High School in 1964 and received a BS degree in Business Administration from the University of Dubuque in 1969. He was a Controller for Midamar Corporation. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Drum and Bugle Corps and a Commercial, Single and Multi Engine Pilot with instrument ratings. He enjoyed woodworking, remodeling, hunting and fishing but he loved flying his Piper Arrow and spending time with his dogs Bubba, Samson, and Mindy.

Rachel Fern Hanson

Rachel Fern Hanson, 96, of 378 27th Avenue SW, died at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House, Tuesday, September 18, 2007, after complications of surgery. Services: 1 p.m. Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Dr. Kay Slocum of First Lutheran Church. A visitation will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories after 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Dave Schulze of Cedar Rapids; 5 grandchildren, Janet Mike Evans, Luanne Brian Carter, Gary Schulze, John Pam Schulze, and Bob Schulze; 4 great grandchildren, Chad, Kelsey, Cody, and Rachel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arthur, a brother, Joseph Green, a sister Lenora Taylor, and a great granddaughter, Nicki.

Rachel was born on July 10, 1911 in Columbus Junction, Iowa to Jacob and Maude Luckey Green. She married W. Arthur Hanson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He died in 1983. She was a bookkeeper for Barron Motor and New Era Industries, working for over 20 years before retiring in 1964. Rachel was a member of First Lutheran Church, The Rebekah Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, Malta Chapter #415, and Kings Daughters. Rachel was an avid reader, and also listened to over 2000 books on tape. She also loved to do crossword puzzles.

A memorial fund has been established.

Dale E. Hefflefinger
Born in Mechanicsville, Iowa on July 11, 1927
Departed on September 20, 2007. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Dale E. Hefflefinger, 80, of 3125 Michelle Ct. SW, died Thursday, September 20, 2007, in St. Luke's Hospital following a short illness. Services at 10 AM Monday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. David Mosher of Trinity Lutheran Church in Walford will officiate. Burial with military honors in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Chapel from 3 to 5 PM on Sunday and after 9:30 AM on Monday. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include three sons Larry and wife Rita and Steven and wife Debbie all of Solon, Iowa, and David and wife Kathy of Cedar Rapids, two daughters Donna Reynolds and husband Art of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Lynn Struck of Cedar Rapids, a sister Mary Hespler of San Diego, California, 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and his life companion Thelma Wagner of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gladys, son Gary, and two brothers Donald and Darrell.

Dale was born July 11, 1927 in Mechanicsville, Iowa to Clyde and Verna Henderson Hefflefinger. He first married Jeanne Abney in 1948 in Cedar Rapids. They divorced. He married Gladys Palmer on April 15, 1961 in Kahoka, Missouri. He served with the Marine Corps during WW II from April 17, 1945 to June 13, 1946. He was a machinist for Collins Radio from 1944 to 1952 and a model maker for Square D from 1959 to 1985. He lived in Lake Havasu City, Arizona for 12 years. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Goodfellows since 1961. He loved sports and being outdoors.

A memorial fund has been established.

Alfred E. Hirschfeld
Born in Wauwatosa, WI on October 28, 1913

Alfred E. Hirschfeld, 93, of 401 26th Street NW, died at the Hiawatha Care Center, Monday, October 15, 2007, after a long illness. Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Jonathan Offt of Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and at the chapel after 12 p.m. Thursday. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Winifred; two sons, Robert Margaret Hirschfeld of Cedar Rapids and Donald Debra Hirschfeld of St. Louis, MO; a daughter, Susan Donald Meek of Cape Coral, FL; three grandchildren, Robert and Brent Hirschfeld and Kathryn Marquis; and two great grandchildren, Zachary and Nathan Hirschfeld.

Alfred was born on October 28, 1913 in Wauwatosa, WI to Alfred and Mary Hirschfeld. He married Winifred Block on November 2, 1935 in Milwaukee, WI. He was Vice President of Administration at Cherry Burrell, retiring in 1984 after 43 years. Alfred was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Elks Club. He was an avid golfer.

Kenneth D. Holvenstot

Kenneth "Ken" D. Holvenstot, 81, of Cedar Rapids died Monday, December 3, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center following an extended illness. Memorial Services: 11:00 A.M. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. William Harnish will officiate. Friends may call on Monday at the Cedar Memorial Park Family Center, where family will greet friends, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. It was Kenneth's wish to donate his body to the University of Iowa.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynda Hofer of Cedar Rapids; a son, D.J. Holvenstot Kim of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Christina Niesz, Kenny, Katie, Hilary and Shelby Holvenstot; two great grandchildren, Christian Everson and Ava Anderson; Kathy Hauskins, a special niece and his former wife, Thelma Fye who both assisted with his care.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Hauskins; and a son-in-law, Brad Hofer.
Ken was born October 4, 1926 in Cedar Rapids the son of Elmer and Lillian Jelinek Holvenstot. Ken retired from Kilborn Photo Products in 1978 and was previously employed by several small businesses as an accountant in the Cedar Rapids area. Ken was an active alumnus of the Coe College Chapter of Lambda Chi Fraternity. He was also the founder and chapter president of House Corp in Iowa City. He was a member of Mt. Hermon Lodge #263 A.F. & A.M., the Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite, El Kahir Shrine, the Kiwanis Club, and Kings Fellowship. The Jaycee's was the organization that Ken was most involved with locally, statewide and nationally. Ken married Thelma Pickerill in 1957. They later divorced but remained good friends.
