Joan J. Harper, 86, of West Ridge Care Center, died there, Monday, February 23, 2009 after a short illness. Services: 3 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel by the Rev. Fred Darbonne of First Christian Church. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel one hour prior to the service.

Survivors include her children, Barbara (Loren) Cohen and Susan Harper, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; Jeff Harper of Swisher and David Harper of Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Donald and a brother Reed Jeffrey.

Joan was born January 31, 1923 in Cedar Rapids to Glenn and Muriel Jeffrey. She was a graduate of Franklin High School, and attended all of their reunions until her health prohibited it. Joan was a member of First Christian Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Luke’s Hospice, Witwer Center Meals, or West Ridge Care Center.

The family would like to express sincerest appreciation to the staff of West Ridge Care Center and St. Luke’s Hospice for the warm and loving care provided to their mother.

Kenneth William Heefner
Born in Walker, Iowa on August 30, 1921
Departed on February 23, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Kenneth (Ken) W. Heefner, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died February 23, 2009 at Higley Mansion Care Center following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, February 27, 2009 at Christ Episcopal Church. Rev. Dr. Barbara H. Schlachter will officiate. Friends may call from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 26, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, and at the church after 10:00 AM on Friday. Interment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter Dianne Schumacher and husband Jim of Chandler, AZ; grandson Aaron Schumacher and wife Candi of Phoenix, AZ; step grand daughters Leah Hupp and husband Christopher of Plymouth, MN, and Christina Cason and husband Randy of Gilbert, AZ. Also surviving are 11 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marianne, a brother Melvin, a sister Gladys, and an infant son James Clinton Heefner.

Kenneth William Heefner was born August 30, 1921 in Walker, Iowa the son of Roy A. and Sadie V. (Elgin) Heefner. He served his country honorably in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII, stationed in England. He was united in marriage to Marianne L. Foushee on September 23, 1941 in Cedar Rapids; she preceded him in death in 2005. He was employed at Iowa Manufacturing for 36 years, and retired in 1986 after the company had changed to Cedar Rapids INC. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, and was a Mason. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church where he was an active member and volunteered often.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial donation be made to Christ Episcopal Church, Higley Mansion Care Center, or to Hospice of Mercy.

Irma Marie Hamm
Born in Marshall County, IA on February 21, 1926
Departed on March 3, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Service: Saturday, March 7, 2009

Irma Marie Hamm, 83, of 2975 F Avenue NW, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center, following a brief illness. Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Barry Foster of Cedar Rapids Christian Center. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel and after 12:30 Saturday at the Chapel of Memories. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her children, Linda Williamson of Laughlin, Nev, Richard Hamm of Clarion, Doug (Kathleen) Hamm of Ft. Wayne, Ind, and Donna Foord of Sandpoint, Idaho; sister, Thelma Clemons of Marshalltown; grandchildren, Kelley Hamm, Aimee Simmons, Colleen Pentsos, Craig Hamm, Dustin Hamm, Dylan Foord, Kate Foord; and seven great grandchildren.

Irma was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent; stepson, Gary Hamm; grandson, Alan Williamson; three brothers; and a sister.

Irma was born on February 21, 1926 in Marshall County to John and Addie Norman. She married Vincent Hamm on March 10, 1951 in Cedar Rapids. He died in 2003. She was a waitress at the Flame Room in Cedar Rapids for many years. She was an active member of Foursquare Gospel Church, now known as Cedar Rapids Christian Center. Irma was an avid Hawkeye and Cubs fan; enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends; crocheting, traveling, and camping.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Rapids Christian Center Building Fund.

Glenna L. Hamblin
Born in Homestead, Iowa on May 25, 1925
Departed on March 7, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Glenna L. Hamblin, 83, of 510 16th St SE, died Saturday March 7, 2009 in her home from a long illness. Family will greet friends on Sunday March 15, from 11:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. at Prairie Oak Lodge, at Squaw Creek Park, Cedar Rapids, where a luncheon will be served. A celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Richard M. Hamblin, three sons, Richard P. Hamblin (Cristy) of Cedar Rapids, James D. Hamblin (Sharon) of Cedar Rapids, and Jeffrey L. Hamblin (Nancy) of Hazleton, two sisters, Bertina Eckman of Amana, Ruby Sherman (Lyle) Sherman of Amana, a brother, Lloyd Trimpe (Mary Ann) of South Amana, 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Her parents, three sisters, Marianne, and Alma Trimpe, Roma Sherman, a brother, George Trimpe, and a brother-in-law, Richard Eckman preceded her in death.
Glenna was born May 25, 1925 in Homestead, Iowa, the daughter of John and Johanna Steinke Trimpe. She married Richard M. Hamblin on September 1, 1947 in Homestead, Iowa. She worked at Jims Vernon Heights Pharmacy as an accountant. She was active in P.T.A., Cub Scouts and cooking for Jacksgarage Men’s Fellowship Group on Thursday nights. Richard and Glenna owned and operated Wood Crafts by Hamblin. In her spare time she enjoyed camping, and was a great cook. The family would like to extend a special thanks to St. Luke’s Hospice and Cinda Johnson for the loving care they gave to Glenna. Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Hospice.

Patricia L "Cookie" Hughes
Born in Beckley, West Virginia on August 11, 1941
Departed on March 29, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Patricia L. “Cookie” Hughes, 67, of 2223 Brookland Dr. NE, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital following a short illness. Services at 1 PM Thursday at New Covenant Bible Church, Pastor Bob Westfall and Pastor Kim Pagel will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and after noon Thursday at the church.

Survivors include her husband John “Bob”, two daughters Jackie (Wally) Holkum of McAlester, Oklahoma, and Sheila (Lynn) Williams of Cedar Rapids, a brother Donald (Phyllis) Crook, and a sister Linda Maxey, all of Richmond, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cookie was born August 11, 1941 in Beckley, West Virginia to Webster and Ollie Faye Bennett Crook. She married Bob Hughes on June 11, 1960 in Richmond, Virginia. She worked for the Department of Defense as a contract specialist. She was a member of New Covenant Bible Church, and the Eastern Iowa Heirloom Quilters Guild. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Memorial contributions may be made to the New Covenant Bible Church building fund.

Hazel Irene Hunter
Born in Cedar Rapids, IA on September 1, 1921
Departed on April 28, 2009. Resided in North Aurora, Illinois.

Hazel Irene “Derb” Hunter, 87, of North Aurora, IL and a former resident of Cedar Rapids died April 28, 2009 in Illinois. Memorial Services will be 1:00 PM Saturday June 20, 2009 at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by Rev. Fred Darbonne. Inurnment at Cedar Memorial Garden of Tranquility.

Survivors include two daughters; Virginia Kay Avril of Monrovia, CA and Joanne (Joseph) Klima of Aurora, IL and a son Joe (Judith) Hunter of Aurora, IL. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Her husband Robert, a sister, a brother and her parents preceded her in death.

Mrs. Hunter was born September 1, 1921, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of William and Jennie Mae (Tollenaar) Derby. She graduated from McKinley High School and then graduated from Mt. Mercy Commercial School with a Business Certificate. She worked many years in retail and retired from Malloy Piano Company as a sales clerk and ‘Girl Friday’. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, wife and friend.

A memorial has been established to assist Cedar Rapids flood relief.
