William R. Klawitter
Born in Elkhart, Indiana on June 30, 1945

William R. Klawitter, 65, died from esophageal cancer on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at home surrounded by his family. Memorial service: 3 p.m. Sunday at First & Cedar Christian Church at 840 – 3rd Avenue SE by the Rev. Fred Darbonne.

Bill was born in Elkhart, IN to Richard and Rachelle Klawitter. After serving in the Army in Germany (1967 – 1969) he traveled extensively in Europe. A graduate of Manchester College and Indiana University, Bill had a lengthy career in computer programming and software development. He was employed at the University of Iowa.

Bill is survived by his wife, Joyce Henning; his son, Dan; daughter, Amber (Beau) Nelson and grandson, Wesley; a sister, Kris (Tim) Sieracki of Indiana; brother, Karl (Victoria) Klawitter of New York; and his beloved nieces and nephews, and in-laws .

Bill enjoyed a great cup of coffee, a good cigar, a challenging game of chess, working out at the gym, computers, and reading the New York Times. He was a man of strong faith and studied the Bible extensively. Bill was a true scholar, a lifelong learner, and dedicated to human freedom. Bill served as a deacon at Cedar and First Christian and most recently supported the New Church Start project there.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the New Church Start project may be made in Bill’s name at the church address above.

Marie Marcella Kelty
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on December 21, 1915
Departed on September 24, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Marie Marcella Kelty, 94, a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids died Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Oldorf Hospice House, Hiawatha of natural complications of old age.

The will be no visitation or service. Her body has been cremated. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Marie was the manager of Fanny Farmer Candies in the Paramount Building for 25 years, earning many awards and citations for her excellence.

She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Paul J. Kelty, a niece and her husband, Lana and Richard McBride of Naples, Florida and a nephew, George Blazek of Chicago, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mollie Blazek.

Kenneth M. Kaness
Born in Boone, Iowa on June 13, 1932
Departed on October 1, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Kenneth Marvin Kaness, 78, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 1, 2010.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 7, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Faith and Life Center in Marion, officiated by Rev. Perry Fruhling. Graveside service with military honors will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel and after 9:30 a.m. at the church on Thursday.

Ken was born on June 13, 1932, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Pearl O. and Sadie Irene (Torkelson) Kaness. Ken graduated from Boone High School in 1950, and attended AIB in Des Moines. Ken served actively in the Navy from 1953 to 1955, and in the reserves until 1957. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1958. On June 15, 1958, Kenny was united in marriage with Mary Ellen (Simmons) in Bonaparte, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Ellen; sons Paul of Cedar Rapids, and David of Richardson, TX; daughter Sue Ellen and son-in-law Todd Stelling of Cedar Rapids; grandson Austin Hansen of Richmond, VA; grandson Kyle Kaness of Cedar Rapids; granddaughter Payton Stelling and grandson Ryker Stelling, also of Cedar Rapids; cousin Louise McKeever of Crystal Lake, IL; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth Calvert of Elgin, IL; Glenn and Margaret Louise Heald of Auxvasse, MO; and Alfred and Frances Jolliffe of Waukee, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Tom and Jerry in infancy, and James; stepfather Andrew Frelund; mother- and father-in-law, Dorothy and George Simmons; brother-in-law, Leo Calvert; and sister-in-law, Myrna Jeanne Kreiger; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

After graduation, Ken worked at Link-Belt Speeder/FMC as a cost accountant for 27 years, retiring in 1985. He then worked at LeFebure, Norand, Goss, and J.E. Adams, retiring for a second time in 1998.

Ken was most proud to coach his kids in baseball and softball. He also volunteered his time with Boy Scout Troop 33 for several years. Ken was a long-time member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. He served as captain of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Bowling team for over 50 years and was a member of St. Mark’s 50+ fellowship group. Ken loved the outdoors and working in the garden and yard. He enjoyed growing tomatoes for his girls even though he didn’t like them. Ken was a lifelong, passionate Iowa Hawkeye fan. His other passion was to cheer on the Jefferson High School Softball teams and was a staple at home games. He never forgot a face, although names escaped him, and he never said a bad word about anyone.

Kenny loved his family tremendously and was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He especially cherished his grandchildren. Ken lived a full and wonderful life and he will live on in each and every one blessed to be touched by his presence. He will be greatly missed!

The family requests no flowers. Memorials in his name may be directed to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or St. Luke’s Hospice.

Special thank yous to his Hospice nurse, Amanda, his doctors, his care givers, the Hospice volunteers, and all those who visited with him over the last few months. You brought him comfort during his final journey.

Barbara Jean Kulish
Born in Algona, Iowa on October 30, 1944
Departed on October 10, 2010. Resided in Marion, Iowa.

Barbara Jean Kulish, 65, of 2640 Clark Ave, Marion, passed away Sunday, October 10, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 AM Thursday at the Antioch Christian Church in Marion. Burial will follow in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, and from 9 AM to service time on Thursday at the Church.

Surviving to honor her memory are her husband of 44 years Leonard, three sons Christopher (Cheryl) Kulish of Chaska, Minnesota, Craig (Julia) Kulish of Center Point, Iowa, and Michael (Nicky) Kulish of Castle Rock, Colorado, three brothers Roger (Gayle) Fickbohm of Wayzata, Minnesota, Tom (Audrey) Fickbohm of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Larry (Gayle Gonsior) Fickbohm of Port Wing, Wisconsin, one sister Eileen (Jim) Gebel of New Hampton, Iowa, and ten grandchildren, Nathan, Laura, David, Joshua, Samantha, Micah, Zach, Shelby, Victoria, and Sophia. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Richard Fickbohm.

Barbara was born October 30, 1944, in Algona, Iowa, to Thomas and Dorothy (Wichtendahl) Fickbohm. She married Leonard Kulish on April 11, 1966 in Lawler, Iowa. She was a member of Antioch Christian Church. She was employed at Mercy Medical Center from 1992 to 2007, and after her retirement she volunteered at the front desk.

Barbara was a devout Christian. She was a wonderful loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She enjoyed dancing with her husband, her aerobic classes, and her friends. She especially enjoyed spending time with her ten grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A memorial fund has been established.

George A. Krug Jr.
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on June 8, 1954
Departed on October 29, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

George A. Krug Jr. 56, died Friday at his home that he shared with his father, George Krug, after an extended illness. Services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Daniel Krueger of Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and at the chapel after 10:30 AM on Wednesday.

George was born in Cedar Rapids and was one of four children, born to George and Betty Krug. He attended Kennedy High School graduating in 1973. He went on to Iowa State University where he received his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1978. Following graduation he was employed by Rockwell Collins until his retirement. George enjoyed and found great satisfaction in designing and building new projects.

George is survived by his father George A. Krug of Cedar Rapids, his brother Kevin and wife Barbara of Swisher, sister Sheryl Dunston and husband Dennis of Woodland, CA, and sister Pamela and husband Richard of Cedar Rapids. George was the proud Uncle to Sean Dunston of Woodland, Chad Ruhberg of Cedar Rapids, IA, Danielle Perleberg of Milwaukee, WI, and Jenni Markt of Center Point, IA., and Great Uncle to Delainey Markt. He was preceded in death by his mother Betty, grandparents, and nephew Trent Van Lengen.

George enjoyed following sports, especially the Cyclones, baseball, music, movies, and loved spending time with his family. Upon his retirement George devoted himself to caring for his parents. George had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed laughing. He had a warm, gentle heart reaching out to those in need.

A memorial fund has been established in George’s memory.

Gilbert Edward Klein
Born in Cedar Rapids on July 13, 1927
Departed on October 30, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Service: Tuesday, November 2, 2010

Gilbert (Gib) Edward Klein, 83, of Cedar Rapids, IA, peacefully passed away at his home on October 30th, 2010, following a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be Monday, Nov 1st, 4-7pm. at Cedar Memorial Chapel 4200 1st Ave NE.

There will be a Vigil Service at 7pm. Funeral Mass Tuesday, Nov 2nd 11am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Hiawatha. Tuesday morning visitation 1 hour prior to Mass at the church. A luncheon will follow. He will be buried at St . Francis Cemetery, Dyersville.

Gib, Klein was born July 13, 1927 to John and Clara (Schmitt) Klein. Gib grew up on a dairy farm in Rural Elk Grove Township, near Cuba City, Wisconsin. He was the youngest son of 14 children. He attended grade school at “the little red school house” close to the family farm. He then attended Cuba City High School. In 1950 he earned a B.A. degree in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.

Gilbert married Marilyn (MaryLou) Westermeyer of Dyersville, IA on October 22th, 1952. They were blessed with 58 years of marriage, 9 children, 33 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Survivors include Marilyn, Krystal (Dewayne) Rahe, Kevin (Brenda), Michele (Paul) Ray, Dana (John) Miller, Chuck (Joni), Rhonda (Jim) Nissen, Ken (Siulin), Jon (Lisa) and Jason (Regina).

Gib and Marilyn are members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish and former members of St. Pius X Parish. Gib served as a board member for St. Pius X Grade School and Regis High School. He owned Gib Klein Company for 30 years. In retirement, he volunteered at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

His faith and family were his most precious possessions.

We would like to thank Mercy Hospice staff and other caregivers for their love and support. In lieu of flowers, a Klein Charitable Memorial Fund has been established.
