Betty J. Polton, 77, of 1428 8th Street NW, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in Living Center West following a sudden illness. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday in St. James United Methodist Church. Rev. Jim Turner will officiate. Friends may register at the church after 10 AM on Saturday. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include her husband Richard 'Dick', a daughter Gail Johnson and husband James of Apple Valley, California, two sons William 'Bill' and wife Cherri of Cedar Rapids, and Steven and wife Stacey of Phoenix, Arizona, six grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and her pet Parrot 'Scooter'.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a daughter Rebecca 'Becky' Polton.
Betty was born February 15, 1925 in Marion, Iowa to William and Myrta Sommers Yule. She married Richard A. Polton on November 7, 1948 in Marshalltown, Iowa. She had worked for Collins Radio as an assembler, and for the Cedar Rapids School District lunch program. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.
Betty loved her family and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Doris Marie McGowan
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on May 26, 1929
Departed on October 29, 2011. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Doris M. McGowan, 82, a resident of the Meth-Wick Community, died October 29, 2011 following an extended illness. Funeral services will held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at the Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 also at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Burial will take place at Palo cemetery.

Surviving are her children, Richard (Joyce) McGowan of Cedar Rapids, IA, Gary McGowan of Minnesota, Thomas (Celia) McGowan of Norfolk, CT, Christine McGowan of Washington, IA, Robert (Catherine) McGowan of Martelle, IA, Michael (Ruth) McGowan of Riverside, IA and Mary (Mary Beth) McGowan of Minneapolis, MN; her brother, Donald (Pauline) Elarton of Martelle, IA; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard, her sister Donna Cones and her brother John Elarton.

Doris was born May 26, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the daughter of Warren and Fern (Hills) Elarton. She was united in marriage to Richard McGowan on December 18, 1949 in Cedar Rapids. She, Richard and the family took many memorable fishing vacations to northern Minnesota. Richard preceded her in death in September 1986. She enjoyed archery and wrote a monthly column that was published in a national magazine about the sport. She retired after more than 20 years of service from Rockwell Collins. She was a volunteer chaplain at St. Luke’s Hospital for 10 years. She had attended and raised her children as a member of Ellis Park Church of God, and later was a member of the Assemblies of God. She was a helpful, giving and loving person who helped anyone that needed it. She will forever be remembered for deep faith in God and her unwavering relationship with Jesus Christ.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Doris’ honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern Iowa Chapter, 317 7th Ave. SE, Ste. 402, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401.

Kenneth E. Millsap
Born in Anamosa, Iowa on May 19, 1932
Departed on March 6, 2012. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Kenneth E. Millsap, 79, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Funeral Mass: 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, by the Rev. Phil Thompson. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday after 12:30 p.m. at the church.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene Millsap; his children, Mark (Cheryl) Millsap of Olathe, Kan., Karol (Barry) Davis of Lake Dallas, Texas, Mary (John) Klein of Sykesville, Md., and Kent (Ana) Millsap of Hiawatha, Iowa; his grandchildren, Brandon (Heather) DeSotel, Kathryn (Pete) Glasser, Michaela (Mike) Gunsaulus, Reid (Stephanie) DeSotel, Sarah Udelhofen, Alison (Monte) Headley, Jenna Udelhofen, Shannon Davis, Anafer Millsap, Easton Davis, Keana Millsap, Keara Millsap and Kael Millsap; and his great-grandchildren, Abagail DeSotel, Nick Sapin and Madden Gunsaulus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Susan DeSotel; and a brother, Bruce Brainard Millsap.

Kenneth was born May 19, 1932, in Anamosa, Iowa, the son of Kenneth and Ardis (Brainard) Millsap. He married Margaret Eileen (Marlene) Cahalan on Oct. 22, 1955, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Kenneth was a detective for the Cedar Rapids Police Department from April 1958 to March 1981, and was co-owner of M & J Feed in Cedar Rapids with his wife Marlene.

He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a charter member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and a member of the Fairfax American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing chess and doing crossword puzzles. He was an avid reader, boater and Hawkeye, Bears and Cubs fan.

More than anything else, Kenneth loved spending time with his family - especially his grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.

Marvelyn Verna Ann McGrath
Born in Kostza, Iowa on September 1, 1933
Departed on March 9, 2012. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Marvelyn Verna Ann McGrath, 78 of Cedar Rapids passed away March 9, 2012 at home with family at her side after a short battle with cancer. A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 15 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Walford. A service of remembrance will be held on Friday, March 16 at 10:30 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, Walford with burial at Koszta cemetery west of Marengo. Rev. David Mosher will officiate. Cedar Memorial Westside-Chapel is assisting the family.

Marv was born on September 1, 1933 in Koszta, Iowa to Vernon Young and Neta Cronbaugh Young. On May 26, 1951, she married Fred McGrath in Norfolk, VA. He preceded her in death in 2003 as well as her parents; one sister, Evelyn; one great granddaughter, Lana.

Survivors include three children, Evie Reusch (Al) of Macomb, IL; Dale McGrath (Sandy) of Norway and Mitchell McGrath (Sandy) of Amana; 8 grandchildren, Jamie Wyse, Dan Reusch, Kristi Reusch, Christy Thurman, Cathi Miller, Mike Weber, Tyson Caffrey, and Andy Caffrey; 10 great grandchildren and a brother, Leon Young (Barbara) of Blairstown.

She played piano in her youth and graduated from Blairstown High School in 1951 and worked at Kmart west in Cedar Rapids for 24 ½ years before retiring. Her husband, Fred and she spent time together mushroom and arrowhead hunting. Marv enjoyed listening to music, traveling, socializing regularly with Widows and Widowers, Ladose, as well as hot air ballooning, flower gardening, and being with family and especially her great grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established in her name.

Gerald C. Myers
Born in Bremer County, Iowa on December 3, 1933
Departed on March 19, 2012. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Gerald C. “Jerry’ Myers, 78, of 1119 Crestview Drive SE died Monday March 19, 2012 at his home after a long illness. Memorial services at 1:00 PM on Saturday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories where there will also be military rites. Rev. Nick Longworth will officiate. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM on Friday.

Survivors include his wife, Myrna, three sisters, Betty Bruncheon of Charles City, Helen McCalley of Hudson and Lavone Meechan of Santee, California; sons, Steven (Marie) Myers and Stan (Lynn) Myers all of Arizona and Stuart (Paula) Myers of Virginia; sons, Stephen Sandquist and Jon (Jean) Sandquist all of Minnesota, Rob (Todd Pope) Sandquist of Cedar Rapids and a daughter, Julie (Kyle Birkemeyer) Cole of Minnesota. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sue; 4 brothers, Don, Bob, Alvin and Ivan; and 2 sisters Grace and Dorothy.
Jerry was born on December 3, 1933 in Bremer County, Iowa the son of Chauncey and Bertha Myers. He married Myrna L. Bixby on February 13, 1982 in Cedar Rapids. Jerry was a lab tech at Rockwell and retired from there after many years of service. After retirement he worked part time at Fareway Foods. Jerry was a veteran and proudly served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

John O. Naber
Born in Tipton, Iowa on December 8, 1925
Departed on December 27, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

John O. Naber, 84, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, December 27, 2009. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dr. Herbert Isenberg will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A private burial will take place prior to the funeral services at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.

Survivors include his wife Eileen; two sons, Steve (Eileen) of Laguna Niguel, CA, and Craig of Dallas, TX; one daughter, Barbara Rich of Dallas, TX; two grandchildren, Leslie and Jeffery of Laguna Niguel, CA; a sister, Grace Leverenz; a brother William W. (Dawn); as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Mearl and Wendell; and brother-in-law Jack Leverenz.

John was born December 8, 1925 in Tipton, Iowa to William and Clara Maude (Melson) Naber. He married Eileen Dircks on June 8, 1950 at St. John’s Church in Clarence, IA. Upon graduation from Tipton High School he spent a year at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, WI. He served his country during WWII in the United States Army 24th Infantry Division band. After his discharge he enrolled in the Engineering School at the University of Iowa. After receiving his Civil Engineering degree he served as the assistant County Engineer for Cedar County for three years. In 1953, John changed careers and entered the insurance business. He was employed by Amerus Life for over 50 years. He was past president of Life Underwriters, CLU, General Agents & Managers, and Estate Planning Council. John was a member of Downtown Rotary Club and was named a Paul Harris Fellow, Elks Club, VFW Post 788 and long time member of Cedar Rapids Country Club. The church was always a big part of his life, and he served on many boards and committees and was a choir member for many years.

John loved his family and was proud of their accomplishments. He enjoyed traveling, bridge, golf and he was an avid Hawkeye fan. His love, zest for life, fun loving nature and humor will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Hospice of Mercy (http://www.mercycare.org/services/hospice/index.aspx) or to Westminster Presbyterian Church (http://www.crwpc.org/).

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Matthew Anderson, Rebecca, Niki, Joe Kane and all the other Hospice workers who shared their love and compassion to make this journey possible.
