Elaine Delores Novak, 84, of Methwick Woodlands, died there Wednesday, November 6, 2007 following a long illness. Services: 11:00 A.M. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home on Friday from 4PM to 7PM. The Rev. Jim Bonewald will officiate.
Survivors include three sons, Tom Novak Donna of Monroe City, MO, Patrick Novak Julie of Cedar Rapids and John Novak Marsha of Solvang, CA; and five grandchildren, Jeff, Michelle, Laura, Emily and Sarah.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Joseph in 1975; a sister, Doris Lanphere and a brother, Don Holsapple.
Elaine was born May 16, 1923 in Davenport the daughter of Earl and Wilma Durbin Holsapple. She married Joseph John Novak on September 8, 1947 in Cedar Rapids. He died in November 1975. She worked for 22 years at Boyson Jewelers. She was a member of Knox United Presbyterian Church and the Audubon Society.

Barbara Lindsey Nassif
Born in Niotaze, Kansas on November 20, 1914

Barbara Louise Lindsey Nassif was born on November 20, 1914 in Niotaze, Kansas. Her parents were James Sankey Lindsey and Hortense Ryden Lindsey. Barbara had an older brother, Hugh Victor Lindsey, a younger brother, James Ryden Lindsey of Anamosa, and a younger sister, Mary Pauline Miles of Cedar Rapids.

Barbara graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, studied with the Woodbury School of Design, and attended classes at Coe College and the University of Iowa. She studied painting with various Midwest artists, including Marvin Cone and others. Barbara was an expert seamstress and worked in the fashion departments of various department stores. Her designs and drawings were featured in local publications. During World War II, Barbara taught painting for the Red Cross at the Shick Veteran's Hospital in Clinton. She also taught art classes from her home in Cedar Rapids and gave talks on "Anyone Can Paint" and "Painting Is Fun" to educational and social groups, including the Jane Boyd Community Center. In 1946, her play, "Centennial Sampler" celebrating the centennial of Iowa statehood won first prize given by the Iowa chapter of the National League of American Pen Women.

Barbara married M. Morey Nassif on May 16, 1937. Together, the couple opened the Iowa Floor Covering Company in Cedar Rapids, which Barbara continued to operate as long as possible during her husband's nearly three-year war service. The couple had two children: Patricia Nassif Acton, a lawyer and educator and spouse, Richard, Lord Acton; and Robert Lindsey Nassif, a musical theater composer and educator.

The Iowa Floor Covering Company later expanded to include interior design services and was called Nassif's Interiors, located at the corner of First Avenue and 15th Street SE in Cedar Rapids. Barbara became a well-known interior designer in the Midwest region. She gave numerous talks about decorating and was a member of the American Society of Interior Designers A.S.I.D. Nassif's Interiors became known for an innovation called "Old House, " a three-story house that featured Barbara's designs in every room. Nassif's Interiors was sold after Morey's passing in 1971.

Barbara was an avid student of the bible and biblical history. She gave talks to civic, social, and religious groups about her bible collection and on the subject of Archeology and the bible. For over thirty years, she was in the public ministry of Christian Science in Cedar Rapids. Barbara loved to travel, and her travels took her to such places as the Middle East and Russia. At various times in her life, Barbara was active in many local clubs and organizations, including the Cedar Rapids Women's Club, the P.T.A., the Women's Committee of the Cedar Rapids Symphony, Zeta Phi Eta an honorary speech organization, the Mayflower Chapter of the D.A.R., the Priscilla Alden Chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonists, and the B.E.A.R. Book Club. She was a lifetime member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Cedar Rapids, and The Mother Church in Boston, Massachusetts.

It was Barbara's wish there be no services.

Carole Jean Petersen
Born in Omaha, Nebraska on January 8, 1938
Departed on May 19, 2002. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Carole Jean Petersen, 64, of 3504 Random Road S.E., died Sunday at Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. Memorial services: 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church by Rev. J. Robert Burkhart officiating. Private family interment will be held prior to the memorial service at the church. Friends may visit with the family at the Cedar Memorial Family Center & Library on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be no public viewing at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to St. Paul's United Methodist Church or Friends of the Library.

Surviving is her husband Don, three sons; Mitchell and wife Beverly of Winnetka, Illinois, Marshall and wife Jennifer of Cedar Rapids and Rod and wife Kimberly of Columbia, Missouri, a sister, Connie Marshall and husband Thomas of Grinnell, Iowa, a brother, Rodd Peterson and wife Lou of Barrington, Illinois and 4 grandchildren, Mark, Robert, Tate and Morgan.

Carole was born on January 8, 1938 in Omaha, Nebraska to G. Earl and Gladys Dusenberry Peterson and was married to Don Petersen on August 11, 1962 in Cedar Rapids. She was a 1956 graduate from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Iowa State University in Ames in 1960 where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority.

After receiving her degree in teaching from Iowa State University, she taught school in Glastonbury, Connecticut and at Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Chapter KG of PEO, the Junior League of Cedar Rapids, and the BBC Book Club. She was also a member of the Quilter's Quorum, Good Bears of the World and Joy Group.

Carole honored God in her life and believed that being a mother was the most meaningful passion in her life. She felt that each family home should have a Bible, a rocking chair and a flag. These represent a family's faith in God, the importance of family, and service to country. Carole was a great teacher and learner, and touched the lives of many people. She will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends.

David Scott Nelson

David Scott Nelson, 54, of Cedar Rapids, died June 9, 2007 in his home following a courageous battle with complications of diabetes. Funeral Services will be held 3 PM, Thursday, June 14, 2007 at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Dr. William Pugliese will officiate. Friends may call from 4 to 7 PM Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Survivors include his numerous close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Robert C. and Bernice M. Nelson.

David Scott Nelson was born March 14, 1953 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the beloved son of Robert C. and Bernice M. Svoboda Nelson. He was a 1971 graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington High School. He graduated from Drake University in 1975 with a BA degree in political science. In 1978 he received his J.D. Degree from the University of San Diego, San Diego, CA. He was self-employed as a local attorney for 25 years. He was a member of the Iowa State Bar Association, Elk's Club, El Kahir Shrine, Drake University Alumni Association, Christ Episcopal Church, and the YMCA. He was previously a member of the Coralville Investment Club. He enjoyed golf, politics, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a generous friend to many and will be greatly missed by those who's lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Karen Ann Neal
Born in Cedar Rapids, IA on April 27, 1942

After a courageous battle with cancer, Karen Ann Neal joined Jesus for eternity on Sunday, April 22, 2007. A Celebration of Karen's Life Service will be held at 6:00 P.M. Thursday at Spirit of Faith Family Church. Pastor Jay Eberly will officiate. Inurnment will be at a later date in Upton, MO. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4PM to 6PM and at the church on Thursday after 5:30 PM.

Karen is survived by her husband Robert Neal; daughter, Kristie Steepleton Marty; son Tony Johnson Tami; sisters, Beverly Ament and Betty Hepker; brother, Stanley See; grandchildren, Ashley and Alicia Johnson, and Mahlon Steepleton.

Karen is preceded in death by her mother, Marjorie Casteel, father Beverly Wayne See and step-father Merle Casteel.

Karen's ability to enjoy every moment of life and her love of people, she never met "a stranger", will be greatly missed by friends and family. Karen had a passion for music, dancing and professional wrestling. She enjoyed spending time with her family going to stockcar races, rodeos and playing games, especially thirty-one. Above all she loved being the #1 Nana to her grandchildren, Ashley, Alicia and Mahlon.

A special thank you to Hospice of Mercy for their care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Dennis P. Ochs
Born in Dubuque, IA. on December 30, 1959
Departed on January 11, 2004. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Dennis P. Ochs, 44, of 1349 Highwood Dr. NW, died Sunday, January 11, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Services at 11 AM Thursday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 8 PM on Wednesday with a wake service beginning at 7 PM.
Survivors include his mother Eileen Ochs-Binger of Cedar Rapids, his brothers and sisters Terri Liedtke and husband Gary, Tim Ochs and wife Judy, Andrea Ochs, and a brother Carl Ochs all of Cedar Rapids, and a sister Mary Ann Nielsen and husband Bill of West Chester, Pa.Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Kory Ochs with the US Navy in Newport News, Virginia, Cassie and Keagan Ochs, Rachel and Tim Liedtke, and Fred and Patricia Ochs all of Cedar Rapids, and Annie and Abbie Nielsen of West Chester, Pa. He was preceded in death by his father Patrick C. Ochs in 1987, and a nephew Samuel E. Ochs in 1999.
Dennis was born December 30, 1959 in Dubuque, Ia. to Patrick and Eileen Smith Ochs, and later moved with his family to Cedar Rapids. He graduated from John F. Kennedy High School and attended Kirkwood Community College. He worked at Edgewood Road Hardees for several years. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He participated in the 1974 and 1975 Special Olympics, winning gold and bronze medals in field and track. In 1994 he received a kidney transplant, with his brother Tim being the donor. His corneas were donated to the University of Iowa Eye Bank. Dennis loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, taking long walks in the evening, swimming, bowling, and playing pool. He also enjoyed watching WWE wrestling and attended shows whenever they came to Cedar Rapids. His quick wit and dry sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A memorial fund has been established. A very special thanks to Mercy Medical Center CCU, Zone 41, and the girls in Endoscopy, who all befriended him and made him feel like one of the gang!
