Mabel L. Palm, 92, of 131 Meadowlark Lane NW died Tuesday June 2, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center after a brief illness. Services at 1:30 PM on Friday at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Rev. Elaine Jones will officiate. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Joe) Michaud of Iowa City and Karen Palm of Des Moines, two brothers, Levi Isenberger of Newton, and Maynard Isenberger of Garner; two sisters, Wilma Schultz of Florida and Mildred Alstadt of Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Mabel was born on Dec. 29, 1916 in Dixon, Missouri, the daughter of George and Minnie Dake Isenberger. She married Wentworth E. Palm on April 4, 1942 in Mason City. He died in 1999. Mabel worked at Killian's Dept. Store for 12 years in alterations, retiring in 1984. She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and volunteered at St. Lukes Hospital for many years. She enjoyed traveling with her many friends and especially time spent with her family. Memorial donations may be given to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mabel’s name.

Joseph Charles Petrak
Born in Linn County, Iowa on March 1, 1920
Departed on May 30, 2009. Resided in Hiawatha, Iowa.

Joseph Charles Petrak, 89, a resident of the Hiawatha Care Center, formerly of Ely, died Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. William Harnish will officiate. Burial with military honors in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Tuesday and at the chapel after 9:30 AM on Wednesday.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Doris, a brother Milo, and a sister Louise Bradley

Joseph was born March 1, 1920 in Linn County, Iowa to Charles and Mary Castek Petrak. He married Doris Zbanek on October 13, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died May 22, 2003. He was a WW II veteran serving in the Army Air Corps. He worked in assembly at Cherry Burrell for 31 years. He was a member of the Ely American Legion Post No 555, and VFW Post No 788. He enjoyed his dogs, gardening, traveling, and spending time agitating his nieces and nephews.

Military honors by Ely American Legion Post No 555.

Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Mercy Hospice Patient Care, Ely American Legion Post No 555, or to VFW Post No 788.

Arveda M. Pink
Born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 10, 1937
Departed on May 16, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Arveda M. Pink, 72, of 639 Crystal Dr. NE, passed away peacefully in her home Saturday, May 16, 2009, following a long illness. Memorial Mass will be held at 1 PM Friday in St. Matthew’s Catholic Church. Rev. Mark Osterhaus will officiate. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation with the family from 4 to 7 PM on Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home with a family sharing time at 6 PM.

Survivors include her children Shawn Pink of Watkins, Greg (Karen) Pink of Cedar Rapids, Alison (Mark) Winn of Manchester, Iowa, Laura (Terry) Rintala of Arvada, Colorado, Jonathan Pink of Seattle, Washington, and Leslie (Matthew) Dake of Cedar Rapids, a sister Kathleen Burnside of Frisco, Texas, and brother Fred Lewis of Las Vegas, Nevada. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Arveda was born May 10, 1937 in Cleveland, Ohio to Donald and Eva Geraghty Lewis. She married John J. “Jack” Pink August 11, 1962 in Medina, Ohio. She taught Fourth Grade at St. Francis Xavier in Medina, Ohio. She was a graduate of the St. Joseph’s Academy in Rocky River, Ohio. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church. She was an avid reader and historian.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Louis Chad Parsons III

Louis Chad Parsons III, 34, of Chicago, IL died Tuesday May 12, 2009 of complications of asthma. Memorial Services: 2:00 PM Saturday May 16, 2009 at Echo Hill Presbyterian Church 1700 B Ave NE Cedar Rapids, IA by Rev. Marti Montovani with visitation beginning at 1 PM at the church.

Shirley Kathleen Penn
Born in Detroit, Michigan on March 7, 1924
Departed on April 28, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Shirley Kathleen Penn, 85, of 6325 Rockwell Dr NE, died Tuesday April 28, 2009 in St. Luke’s Hospital following a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel today from 4-7 p.m.

Survivors include Russell, her husband of 62 years, her children, Gary Penn and fiancé’ Jean Medellin of Hayward, California, Sandra Minger and husband Mark of Cedar Rapids, Dr. Cynthia Penn-Duecker and husband Lynn Duecker of Piedmont, California, and Gregory Penn and wife Haydee of Sypris, Texas, a sister, Patricia Kirby of Novi, Michigan, 9 grandchildren, Ben Avis, Becky Smith, Kyla Avis, Byran Avis, Ryan Duecker, Jason Duecker, Angelica Villanueva, Marshall Penn, Jordan Penn and 5 great grandchildren, Mariza, Roberto, Juaquin, Haley, Charlotte. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Gordon Smith.

Shirley was born March 7, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Fern and Eleanor Marshall Smith. She married Russell Howard Smith there on September 7, 1924. Shirley worked for St. Luke’s Hospital as a central service technician. She loved to square dance, crochet, read and travel and her favorite was spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Andrew Fredrick Peters, Jr.
Born in Clinton, Iowa on September 5, 1944
Departed on March 29, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Andrew Frederick Peters Jr., of 1011 74th St NE, died Sunday March 29, 2009 in the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Joe Kane. Visitation is today at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. and after 10:00 a.m at the chapel on Wednesday.

Survivors include his son, Andrew (Angela) Peters of Anamosa, a daughter, Jennifer Geiger of Cedar Rapids, one sisters, Sue (Fred) Halcomb of Clinton, his grandchildren, Christina, Andrew, Nicholas, and a great grandchild Sydney.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters.

Andrew was born September 5, 1944 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Andrew Sr. and Gladys Peters. He attended the Iowa School of the Blind in Vinton, and furthered his career by attending the University of Iowa, receiving a Masters of Arts degree on August 20, 1991. Andrew worked at Mercy Sedlacek Treatment Center from 1993 until 2007.

A memorial fund has been established by the family instead of flowers.

Margaret Ann Phillips
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on June 7, 1920
Departed on March 16, 2009. Resided in Mesa, Arizona.

Margaret Ann (Stolba) Phillips, 88, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, March 16, 2009, in Mesa, following a long illness. Services will be held at 11 AM Monday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. William Harnish will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 PM Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and at the chapel after 10:30 AM on Monday.

Survivors include her children, William L. (Judy) Phillips Jr. of Mesa, Arizona, and Cynthia Miller of St. Mary’s, Ohio, siblings, Leo (Carol) Stolba of Marion, Leonard (Carllene) Stolba of Buena Vista, Colorado, Leona (Anthony) Pusateri of Cedar Rapids, Louis (Geraldine) Stolba of Robins, and Robert (Marcella) Stolba of Cedar Rapids, grandchildren, Diana (Marlowe) Buller, Gary Phillips, Jaime Looney, Lori (Mark) Vislisel, Tina (Wayne) Stephens, Gwen (John) Kottmann, Tracy (LeRoy) Ditton, Christi Phillips, Jeff (Tiffany) Phillips, Bruce Phillips, Carrie Phillips, Jason (Amber) Miller, Peyton (Jay) Walter, and Evan (Dr. Malathy Ramachandran) Miller, 24 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two children Shirley and Bruce Phillips, and five siblings Josephine Barcus, Emil Stolba, Milo Stolba, Adolph Stolba, and Mary Ann Stolba.

Margaret was born June 7, 1920, in Cedar Rapids to Edward and Anna Dvorak Stolba. She married William Phillips Sr. on October 8, 1938 in Iowa City. He died October 3, 1966. She was a production worker for Acme Graphics Inc. for 42 years. She enjoyed taking trips, riding hot air balloons, fishing, and her ATV rides with her grandson. She was a member of the Grand Temple Pythian Sisters.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
