Catherine A. Rohde, 83, of Cedar Rapids, died September 2, 2010 at Cottage Grove Place. A memorial gathering and reception will be held from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM, on Friday, September 3, 2010 at the Cedar Rapids Country Club-North Porch. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 4, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Thomas E.S. Miller of First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Surviving are her children, Charlie Rohde of Cedar Rapids, Sara Sauter and husband Jim of Cedar Rapids, and Christine Castner and husband Stanley of Evergreen, Colorado; 6 grandchildren, Katie and Anna Rohde, Patrick and Lizzie Sauter, and Sam and Joe Castner; a sister, Nancy E. Smith of Cedar Rapids; a brother, William (Joyce) Smith of Peoria, IL; sister-in-law, Susan Stroupe of Racine, WI; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles P., sister Mary Friend and brother David J. Smith.

Catherine was born January 23, 1927 in Dubuque, Iowa the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth (Pladna) Smith. She was united in marriage to Charles P. Rohde on June 23, 1951 in Dubuque. C.P. preceded her in death on February 13, 2002. She was a long time member of the Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary, volunteering in the gift shop, where she logged more that 4, 222 hours. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother, assisting at schools, Campfire, and many events. As a member of Cedar Rapids Country Club, she played many rounds of golf with friends and family. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with her husband. A favorite place to visit was the beach at Sanibel Island with her sisters and family. She was a darn good aim with a 20 gauge and the walleyes were never safe when she was in Canada. She will be dearly missed by her family.

Memorial donations in Catherine’s name may be made to the Rohde Endowed Nursing Scholarship through the Kirkwood Foundation at Kirkwood Community College, or to the Nursing Program at Mount Mercy University.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Cottage Grove Place and Hospice of Mercy for their dedicated and compassionate care.

Paul Thomas Raver

Paul Thomas Raver, 60, of Cedar Rapids, ended his 15 month struggle with brain cancer at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Tuesday, September 21, 2010. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew Catholic Church by the Rev. David Beckman. Burial: 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Oak Hill cemetery, Glendale, OH. A visitation will be held on Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, Iowa from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. A second visitation will be held at the Paul R. Young Funeral Home, Mt. Healthy, OH on Monday, September 27, 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Carole; sons, Andrew Raver and wife, Tory of Iowa City, Brian Raver and friend, Karen of Richfield, MN, and Jeffrey Raver and wife, Cathy of Ft. Stewart, GA; mother, Shirley Raver of Kokomo, IN; sisters, Barbara Maners of Carmel, IN, Rita (Greg) Sale of Kokomo, IN, and Beth (Jeff) Sikkema of Metamora, IL; brother, Mark (Brenda) Raver of Tipton, IN; and mother-in-law, Ailene Bell of West Chester, OH. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul J. Raver and father-in-law, William Bell III.

Paul was born on July 6, 1950 in Batesville, IN to Paul and Shirley Schultz Raver. He graduated with a BS from Purdue University in 1973. Paul was united in marriage to Carole Bell on January 29, 1972 in Cincinnati, OH. He was the purchasing manager for Genencor International Inc. Paul was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. He loved coaching his sons. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid sports fan; especially the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals and the Purdue Boilermakers. Paul will be remembered as an excellent husband and father.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association and the Hospice House of Mercy.

Robert James Rhame
Born in Raleigh Durham, North Carolina on December 5, 1948
Departed on September 26, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Robert James Rhame, 61, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Mercy Medical Center, Sunday, September 26, 2010. Memorial Services: 3:30 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Heather Hayes. The family will greet visitors at the church after 2:30 p.m. Friday. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; children, Joel Rhame of Iowa City and Laurel Rhame of Cedar Rapids; his father, John Rhame II of Glen Ellyn, IL; a sister, Kathy (Norm) Marquis of Evansville, IN; brothers, John (Kay) Rhame III of Portage, IN and Daniel (Cathy) Rhame of Wheaton, IL; and many nieces, nephews and loved cousins. Bob was preceded in death by his mother.

Bob was born December 5, 1948 in Raleigh Durham, NC to John and Ruth Steinke Rhame II. He married Barbara Pearson in Iowa City on July 6, 1985. Bob was a systems engineer for Rockwell Collins for the last thirty years. Bob was an Air Force veteran of Viet Nam.

Bob Rhame was a terrific father, a patient and loving husband, a great brother, and a famously interesting and funny friend. He was a gifted chef and gardener, wine connoisseur, bridge player, and raconteur. His dry sense of humor constantly bewildered and amused his family and friends. Bob loved public TV, Bill Moyers, a good political discussion, and a fine display of fireworks.

The family was overwhelmed by the generosity of spirit and professional care shown to them by the staff of the Oncology floor at Mercy Medical Center.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Perrine Oncology Center in Robert’s name.

Staci Nicole Rettenmeier
Born in Cedar Rapids, IA on August 19, 1988
Departed on November 5, 2010. Resided in Hiawatha, Iowa.

Staci Nicole Rettenmeier, 22, of Hiawatha, died at home, Friday, November 5, 2010 from complications of leukodystrophy. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton by the Rev. Neil Manternach. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. and after 9:30 a.m.Wednesday at the church.

Survivors include her parents, Dale and Debra Rettenmeier of Hiawatha; her sister, Amy Rettenmeier of Hiawatha; grandparents, Dorothy Pool of Cedar Rapids and Howard (Shirley) Rettenmeier of Dyersville; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Staci was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Robert Pool.

Staci attended Bowman Woods and Hoover Elementary Schools as well as Taft Middle School and Jefferson High School. Staci graduated from Jefferson High School in May 2009 with perfect attendance for her final four years there. Staci was involved with The ARC of East Central Iowa as well as Options of Linn County.

Even though Staci had dealt with the symptoms of her disease for many years, she always maintained her smile and cheerfulness. She was a joy to her family and friends and inspired those around her.

We are so thankful to the caregivers, friends, neighbors, family and educational staff who have worked with her and made her life so fulfilled and happy.

George D. Rusk Jr.
Born in Belle Plaine, Iowa on January 6, 1920
Departed on November 14, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

George D. Rusk Jr., 90, of Crestview Acres died there on Sunday November 14, 2010 from complications of old age. Memorial services at 1:00 PM on Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories where friends may call after 12:30 PM. Rev. Dr. T. Edwards Breed will officiate. Inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery where there will be military rites. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Verlien, his children; Ron (Teri) Clarke of Cedar Rapids, Jackie (Nancy) Clarke of Castle Rock, Colorado, Sheila (Jackie) Miller of Marion, James Rusk of East Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, George III (Pam) Rusk of Center Point and Cynthia (Bill) Thomas of Anamosa. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Geraldine and a great grandson, Michael.

George was born on January 6, 1920 in Belle Plaine, the son of George and Eva VanDoren Rusk Sr. He married Verlien M. Sigmund on September 25, 1948 in Iowa City. George was a machinist at Cherry-Burrel for over 22 years, retiring in 1982. He proudly served in the Navy during WWII aboard the USS Laffey from 1943 to 1945 in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

“The family would like to thank the staff at Crestview Acres, Mercy Hospital and Hospice for the wonderful treatment and care they provided in his last five months. Again thank you from the bottom of our hearts. May God bless you all.” George will be greatly missed by all, being the close knit family as we all are.

James Henry Robinson Jr.
Born on October 2, 1962
Departed on November 25, 2010. Resided in Iowa City, Iowa.

James Henry Robinson, Jr., 48, of Iowa City, IA passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 25, 2010 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 3, 2010 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (380 Lincoln Hwy, Mt. Vernon, IA). Neil Gilbert will officiate with burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 PM Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

James H. Robinson Jr. of Iowa City, IA has passed away from a sudden illness on November 25, 2010 in his home.

James H. Robinson Jr. was born October 2, 1962 to James and Freda Robinson. His survivors include two daughters Melissa Robinson and Kaylin Robinson; son Corey Robinson; siblings Valerie (Tim) Willard, Donna (Brian) Palmershiem, Kevin (Jessica) Robinson; nieces Anna Robbins, Desiree Bettmeng, Ava and Gretta; three grandchildren Mercedes, Allyson and Anthon; two dogs Snowy and Buddie that he loved very much.

Jimmy was an outspoken person who loved the holidays and to sit back and watch Christmas shows and sing Christmas songs. Jimmy also loved to go fishing.

Though this life may be gone, you will forever be alive in the hearts of those who love you and will live forever in heaven until we see each other again in the presence of our Holy God and Savior Jesus.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
