Earl V. Welsh, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday March 23, 2012 in the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at All Saints Catholic Church by the Rev. Msgr. Russell Bleich. Burial: Mt Calvary Catholic cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. and after 9:00 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. A vigil service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife Ramona, his children; Diana (Mark) Powers of Cedar Rapids, Deb (Steve) Blood of Palo, Iowa, Patrick (Lisa) Welsh of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Michael (Loretta) Welsh of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, his sisters; Inez Welsh and Anne Garringer both of Williamsburg, Iowa, his grandchildren; Ben (Lindsay) Blood, Jenna (Cody) Jandik, Elizabeth Blood, Jessica Powers, Shaun Welsh, Riley Welsh, Janey Welsh and his great grandchildren; Kaelynne and Ryker Blood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Paul, Leo and Gene Welsh.
Earl was born December 21, 1930 in Iowa County, Iowa, the son of Patrick and Mary Bryson Welsh. He married Ramona Perrin on February 7, 1953 in Boston, Massachusetts. Earl worked for Iowa Electric as a supervisor retiring in 1992. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Mended Hearts and the American Legion Hanford Post 288. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Earl loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and the family gatherings. His family was very important to him. He loved to feed the squirrels, birds, listening to Irish music and taking family vacations. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Memorials may be directed to All Saints Catholic Church, Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy and Mended Hearts.

Sylvia Wolcott
Born in Near Reliance, South Dakota on May 7, 1909
Departed on November 20, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Sylvia “Mae” Wolcott, 100, went to be with her Lord on November 20, 2009. She died of old age, with complications of dementia. She was born May 7, 1909 near Reliance, South Dakota to Charles and Mary House, the 3rd of 7 children, who all preceded her in death. After graduation from Reliance High School in 1927, she obtained a teaching certificate and taught 2 years in a rural school near Hamill, South Dakota, after which she married Orville Wolcott in 1931. Their son Lauren was born in 1933. In 1945 they went for 1 year to the Houston Mission in Kentucky where Mae taught grades 1-4 and her husband worked in maintenance. They then went to Randleman, North Carolina where they worked for the Pilgrim Tract Society. In 1949 they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Mae, Orville and Lauren were participants in the formation of the Phoenix Reformed Presbyterian Church. Mae worked at Goldwater’s Department Store for 25 years where she advanced to head the gift-wrapping department through her artistic talents.
Her husband, Orville passed away in February, 1988. Mae continued her creative life in Phoenix until 2000 when, at the age 91, she moved to Cedar Rapids to live with her son Lauren and his wife Sandra. During her years in Cedar Rapids she had attended the Grace Brethren Church.
She is survived by her son, Lauren, his wife, Sandra, half-brother, Alden and 4 sisters-in-law, Esther, Virginia, Linda, and Eleanor.
Services will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday November 28, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Gary Austin and Rev. John Monger will officiate. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday November 27th. There will also be services at a later date in Chamberlain, South Dakota with burial at the Reliance, South Dakota cemetery.

Eddice Mae Weichman
Born in Rural Benton County on March 6, 1912
Departed on November 8, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Eddice M. Weichman, 97, of Evergreen Estates III, died there Sunday, November 8, 2009. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel by the Rev. Sonda Kirsteatter of Olivet Presbyterian Church. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 – 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Eleanor Weichman.

Eddice was born in rural Benton County on March 6, 1912. She was a secretary for the Cedar Rapids School Board for many years, retiring in 1974. Eddice was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church and was a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Olivet Presbyterian Church, 237 -10th Street NW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52405 or St. Luke’s Hospice at 290 Blairs Ferry Road, NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402.

Mary Lou and Richard would like to thank the caring staff at Evergreen Estates III, everyone at St. Luke’s Hospice, and Rev. Sonda Kirsteatter and church members for the loving attention given to Eddice.

Mattie Lorena Williams
Born in Toddville, IA on January 19, 1923
Departed on November 8, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Mattie Lorena Williams, 86, of 4417 Council St. NE died Sunday Nov. 8, 2009 at the home due to chronic health issues. Services at 1:00 PM on Wednesday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda Danley of Cedar Rapids, Betty Garrett (Steve Jones) of Mesquite, Texas and Sharon (Daryl) Zweigle of Walker, and two sons, Robert and Dennis both of Hiawatha. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Thelma Paine of Minnesota and Opal Inman of California and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Mary Crandall and two brothers, Leslie and Dale Hemphill.

Mattie was born on January 19, 1923 in Toddville, the daughter of Cleveland and Grace (Topliff) Hemphill. She married Ralph J. Williams on November 18, 1945 in Charles City. He died in 1990. Mattie enjoyed baking, crafts, crocheting, playing the organ as well as the Hawaiian guitar. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by her friends and beloved family.

Memorial donations may be given to St. Lukes Hospital in Mattie’s name.

Harmon Russell Wisted
Born in Dunn County, North Dakota on December 17, 1930
Departed on October 28, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Harmon Russell Wisted, 78, of 1640 34th St. NE, died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, in his home, from cancer. Services with military honors will be held at 1 PM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. T. Edwards Breed of St. Andrew Lutheran Church will officiate. Entombment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Saturday.

Survivors include his wife Sharon, two son’s Timothy and Gerald, two daughters, Dorothy and Kathleen, sixteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, two brothers: Elmo and Norman, and sisters Evangeline, Norma, Selma, and Evelyn. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene, two daughters Christina and Marie, and brothers Arland, Kermit, and Ike.

Harmon was born December 17, 1930, in Dunn County, North Dakota, to Iver and Esther Wendt Wisted. He lived a quiet life of love and friendship. He never strayed from the values he was taught on the family’s North Dakota farm. His philosophy was to treat everyone as you would like to be treated. He had a humble belief in God, a veteran’s love of country, and above all else, he loved his family and friends.

Harmon retired from Rockwell Collins in 1989 after 27 years as an Electrical Engineer. He was a veteran of the Korean war, serving in the United States Air Force. He was a lifetime member and supporter of the American Legion, a golfer, who like all golfers, sought personal excellence in his game, and as a bowler, who’s league career spanned 50 years. He enjoyed playing cards, a good game of cribbage, and a cocktail with family and friends. He married Sharon K. Klimesh, in Cedar Rapids on May 30, 1986. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend. If you knew him, tell his story well, that we may all remember the warmth, love, and laughter of his life.

Military honors will be provided by Hanford American Legion Post No 5.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Anna Grace Walker

Anna Grace Walker, age 92, died peacefully at home on Monday, October 12, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. Services: 11:00 A.M. Friday at St. James United Methodist Church, where friends may call after 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Beth Straw will officiate. Burial: North Walker cemetery in Sperry, Iowa. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Anne was born August 26, 1917, in the town of Little York, IL, to the late John Clay Bruner and Lois K. Cordell Bruner. She attended rural schools in Illinois, Biggsville High School, and graduated from Wappello High School in Iowa. She graduated from Western Illinois State Teacher College in Macomb, Illinois with honors. She married Dwight McAllister Walker on May 24, 1942, and was a devoted and caring wife until his death in September of 1990.
Anne taught school many years and later was employed by Link Belt-Speeder for 29 years before retiring. She was an active member of St. James United Methodist church serving on the board, and teaching Sunday School. She was active with the U.M.W and Silver Club.
Anne was a well loved and faithful servant of our Lord and a dedicated member of St. James United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She has made a tremendous impact in the lives of many people that will truly be recognized into eternity.
Anne is survived by her son, Richard Walker of Marion, her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Joseph McCollum, Jacksonville, FL; two grandchildren, Melissa Hadden and husband, Moo Hadden of Jacksonville, FL, Matthew J. McCollum and wife Ashley of St Johns, FL; two great-grandsons, Jackson and Grayson Hadden, Jacksonville, FL; sister, Betty Moore of Lexington, KY; brother, William Bruner and wife, Shirley of Moberly, Missouri. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Anne is preceded by a brother, Jim Bruner, a sister in law, Florence, a sister, Ida Johnson, brothers in law, Verlin Johnson and Rev. John K. Moore.
Memorials may be made to St. James United Methodist Church or Discovery Living.
The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers of Mercy Hospice for all of their care and support of Anne over the past months.

James Norman Wood
Born in Earlham, Iowa on August 26, 1926
Departed on October 7, 2009. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

James N. Wood, 83, died October 7, 2009 in his home following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Perry Fruhling of St. Mark’s Lutheran Faith and Life Center will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, on Friday, October 9, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Entombment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.

Surviving are his children James C. Wood and wife Paulette of Cedar Rapids, and David N. Wood and wife Polly of Alburnett; grandchildren James M. Wood and wife Candace of Marion, Tina M. Naaktgeboren and husband Erik of Cedar Rapids, Amber Knickerbocker and husband Justin of Wichita, KS, Nicole Wood of Des Moines, and Cortney Wood of Alburnett; and great grandchildren Tate, Jimmy, and Kane.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Evelyn, and sister Patty.

James was born August 28, 1926 in Earlham, IA the son of James S. and Nellie (Boat) Wood. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during WWII. He married Evelyn Jesnick on December 26, 1948 in Newton, IA; she preceded him in death in 2003. He worked for the Social Security Administration, and retired after 35 years of service as Manager. He was a member of Downtown Kiwanas, St. Mark’s Lutheran Faith and Life Center, and was a Mason. He was previously active with the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed fishing, golf, and above all time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the memorial fund established in James’ honor.
