Alice Hrubes
December 4, 1915 - October 10, 2008
GARNER - Alice B. Hrubes, 92, of Garner died Friday (October 10, 2008) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with Fr. Brian Dellaert officiating. Burial will be at St. John's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner with a combined Rosary Society and Catholic Workman rosary at 4 P.M. and a Scriptural Wake service at 7 P.M.
Alice Barbara Hrubes, the daughter of James and Mary (Formanek) Rokos, was born December 4, 1915 on a farm northwest of Garner. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. Alice graduated from Hayfield Consolidated High School in 1934. On June 9, 1936, she was married to Frank Hrubes at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. They farmed south of Duncan until retiring to Garner in 1980. Alice also worked part-time in the Dietary Department at HCMH in Britt. She enjoyed gardening vegetables, baking, playing cards, going on trips and flowers, especially, roses. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Alice will be sadly missed by her family.
She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Rosary Society and Catholic Workman FCSLA Branch W51. She belonged to the Liberty Ladies' Club and was a past 4-H Leader.
Alice is survived by her son, Don (Donna) Hrubes of Spencer; daughter, Sister Janet Hrubes of Chicago, IL; three grandchildren, Deb (Alan) Hummel of West Des Moines and their son, Elijah, and Diane and Dan Hrubes of Spencer; a sister, Gladys Kudej of Britt; sisters-in-law, Helen Malek of Garner, Margaret Hrubes of Garner and Mary Trca of Britt; brothers-in-law, Clarence (Joan) Hrubes of Garner and Joe (Leona) Hrubes of Britt; many nieces and nephews; and close friends, Sisters Nila and Non Meyerhofer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; parents; sister, Lillian (John) Dolphin; sisters-in-law, Emily (Ernie) Trca and Elsie (Frank) Vavrik; and brothers-in-law, Bob Kudej, John Hrubes, Syl Malek, Arnold Trca and Ray (Darlene) Hrubes.

Gary Mestad
February 14, 1946 - September 20, 2008
GARNER - Gary A. Mestad, 62, of Garner died Saturday (September 20, 2008) at his home in Garner.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Garner with Rev. Keith Scott officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 P.M., Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Gary Allen Mestad, the son of Orval and Trina (Linne) Mestad, was born February 14, 1946, at Mason City. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1964. He continued his education at NIACC in Mason City and graduated from Mankato State University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. On August 15, 1970, he married Merikay Marth at First Methodist Church in Mason City. That same year they moved to Garner where Gary began teaching fifth grade at Garner-Hayfield Community Schools. The next year he moved to seventh and eighth grade social studies. He earned his MSE in Education Administration - Secondary in 1997 at Drake University. He enthusiastically coached both boys' and girls' middle school sports and varsity softball before retiring in 2001. Gary took two softball teams to the state tournament. Sports, especially coaching, was a major part of his life. Gary enjoyed collecting records and CDS, going to the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake and listening to many kinds of music. He was an avid Buddy Holly and St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.
He is survived by his parents, Orval and Trina Mestad of Clear Lake; a brother, Curtis Mestad of Clear Lake; an uncle, Henry (Donna) Linne of Coralville; and a cousin, Kathy Hanna of Boulder, CO.
Gary was preceded in death by a nephew, Adam Benish.

Drahos, Frank J.
Frank Drahos, 86 of Cedar Rapids died Sunday, August 5 at Mercy Medical Center after a brief illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 9, 2007 at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Burial to follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, where there will be a 6:30 p.m. vigil.
Frank was born January 5, 1921 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Frank and Amalie Plotz Pospisil Drahos. He served in the US Army during World War II in Germany. He married Maxine M. Barnes on May 16, 1950 in Cedar Rapids. Frank worked for many years at Rockwell Collins until his retirement. He loved spending time traveling and being with his family and friends. Frank had been living with his daughter in Center Point the past three years, but he and Maxine lived on Circle Drive NE in Cedar Rapids for many years.
Frank is survived by his son Richard (Mary) of Cedar Rapids; daughters Cathleen “Cathy” (Larry) Martinson of Center Point, and Paula (Marty) Kloska of Reno, NV; grandchildren: Larry L. (Diane) Martinson, Dale A. (Tammi) Martinson, Christine (Guy) Kelly, Chris (Krista) Drahos, Deanna (David) Brewer, Jeff (Emily) Gollaher, James (Lori) Gollaher, and Amy (James) Steele; greatgrandchildren Amanda, Kurt, Forrest, Kelsey, Wyatt, Calista, Brent, Haley, Jake, Alex, Taylor, Lilly, Brook, Brett, Matthew, Michel, Alley, and James; a sister Alice (William) Mosby of Marion; brothers Stanley (Irma) Drahos of Betram, Wes Drahos of Cedar Rapids and John (Barb) Drahos of Postville, as well as many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Maxine of over 49 years, who died October 13, 1999; two sisters Molly Mach and Julia Lawrence; two brothers Ed and August Pospisil; and a grandson Allen Frank Martinson.
Memorials may be directed to St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Rex Honey
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Rex D. Honey, 65, who died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, was held Thursday, Oct. 28, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial was at Ridgewood Cemetery, North Liberty.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the University of Iowa Foundation for the Center for Human Rights, 1 West Park Rd., Iowa City, IA 52246.
Rex was born March 8, 1945, in San Diego, Calif., the son of Alan and Alice (Cain) Honey. On Aug. 28, 1965, he married Sandra Martino in San Diego. Rex and Sandra had dated since they were in the ninth grade. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Riverside. Rex received his MA and Ph.D. in geography from the University of Minnesota.
Rex was a professor of Geography at the University of Iowa since January 1974. From 2006 to 2010, he served as director of the Crossing Borders Program and for many years was the director of African Studies. He was past chair and served on the board of the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights. Rex held a wide range of academic positions throughout the world and received many awards and honors including Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award, International Programs at the University Programs at the University of Iowa. He authored numerous articles and grants. In 2009, he was one of two geography representatives to the Science and Human Rights Coalition of the American Advancement of Science. Rex was a Fulbright Scholar in New Zealand and Nigeria and was awarded Fulbright-Hays grants for group projects in Nigeria, Bangladesh and India.
His memberships include the Association of American Geographers, International Geographical Union, the National Council for Geographic Education and the Geographic Alliance of Iowa. Rex served as past president of the Triangle Club, as well as Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence and was a long-serving member of the Program Committee of the Iowa City Foreign Relations Council.
Rex was passionate about his work and family. The consummate geographer, he was adventurous, loved to learn and worked hard to make the world a better and more just place. He traveled so often that he had not spent an entire year in the U.S. since 1976. He was generous to others and loved to teach, educate and mentor students. He will be greatly missed.
Rex is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sandra and their three daughters, Larisa Honey (Jon D'Uva) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Rochelle Honey (Michael Arcement) of North Liberty, and Ngaire Honey (Adam Eckert) of New Orleans; his siblings, Roger Honey, Ali (Jim) Jarvis and Betty Honey, all of San Diego; his father-in-law, Albert Martino, mother-in-law, Evelyn (Bob) Sprague and sister-in-law, Suzette Martino, all of San Diego.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Helen Young
Helen J. Young, 96, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital. Services were held Oct. 30 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Graveside services were held Oct. 30 at Locust Cemetery, Locust, Iowa.
Helen was born June 18, 1914, in Spring Grove, Minn., the daughter of Ole and Mame Blegen. She married Lester Philip Young on Dec. 17, 1936, at the Locust Lutheran Church. She was employed at Sun Mart Foods until she retired. She liked to do volunteer work at church, where she had been active with the Home Missionary, Mary Martha Guild and Joy Group.
Survivors include her sons, Leslie (Carolyn) Young of Solon and Mark (Maryjayne) young of Boca Raton, Fla.; her grandchildren, Michelle Young of Charles City, Deneen (Paul) Ritter of Charles City, Michael (Mary) Young of Iowa City, Tali Carpentier, Jeremy Young and Jeff Young, all of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jamie (Russ) Skiye of Atkins, Tim (Jessie) Trpkosh of Madison, Wis., Sean Howell of Boca Raton, Fla., and Gwen (Lestan) Quintanilla of Newmarket, N.H.; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a special person in her life, Ginnie.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester; her parents; a sister, Ruth Matter; and a brother, Orlando Blegen.
Memorials may be made to the Locust Cemetery.

LaVerne Aubrecht
LaVerne Aubrecht, 78, of Tiffin died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at the Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville.
Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 25, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin. Burial will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Tiffin. Visitation was Sunday at the church, with cremation following the visitation. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in LaVerne's memory for Grace United Methodist Church, Iowa City Hospice or the charity of your choice. E. LaVerne Slade was born May 17, 1932, in Tiffin, the daughter of DeWayne and Donna (Oakes) Slade. She graduated from Tiffin High School in 1950. On January 22, 1950, she married Robert J. "Bob" Aubrecht in Tiffin. The couple and their family made their home in Coralville for many years before LaVerne and Bob moved to Tiffin in 1996. LaVerne was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin, the North Liberty Saddle Club, active in Johnson County 4-H, enjoyed the outdoors with her family, camping and fishing. LaVerne had worked a short time for the University of Iowa, she and Bob owned and operated Wool & Wear for a number of years, but for LaVerne she was most proud being wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was a lifetime of love for her.
Her family includes daughters Margaret Rios (Benny) of North Liberty and Marcia Dolezal (Mike Gatto) of Cedar Rapids; sons Terry Aubrecht of Tiffin, Tom Aubrecht (Michelle) of Iowa City and Tim Aubrecht (Cindy Elmer) of Rockford, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; sisters Donna Dietrich (Darren) of Cedar Rapids and Reta Bream of Oxford; and sister-in-law Vickie Slade of Tiffin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bob; son, James; her brother, Vernon Slade, and brother-in-law, Bill Bream.
