Thomas L. Bowen
Thomas L. Bowen, M. D., 72, formerly of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at his home in Solon, surrounded by his family.
Tom was born July 4, 1939, to Mildred and Kenneth Bowen of Oskaloosa. He married Judy M. Slay on July 29, 1961, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oskaloosa. Tom and Judy celebrated their 50th anniversary with family in Hannibal, Mo., in July of this year.
Tom and Judy lived in Davenport while Tom attended St. Ambrose College, where he earned his undergraduate degree. Their first born child Daniel Slay Bowen was born in Davenport in 1962. The family then moved to Milwaukee, Wis., where Tom attended medical school at Marquette University and achieved his Medical Doctorate Degree. Daughter Susan L. Bowen (Peace) was born in Milwaukee in 1965.
The Bowen family moved to Spokane, Wash., in 1966, where Tom did his internship at Sacred Heart Hospital. In 1968, Tom was drafted into the U. S. Army. After the family moved back to Oskaloosa, Captain Bowen was deployed to Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. During his deployment, their second daughter Brenda L. Bowen (Bell) was born in 1969. Upon returning home, Tom was stationed in Seattle, Wash., where Judy and family joined him.
The Bowens moved to the Springfield, Mo., area in 1972, where Tom worked in the Emergency Room at St. John's Hospital for five years before entering into private practice as a partner at Smith-Glynn-Calloway Clinic in 1977. The Bowens settled on 20 acres in Strafford, Mo., in 1974 where Tom and Judy saw all three children graduate high school. Tom was with SGCC until retirement in 1996.
Tom and Judy moved to Solon in 2010 where they could be near their grandchildren, Jack and Liam Bell.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bill and Steve, sister Helen, and son Dan.
Surviving family includes wife Judy and daughters Brenda (and Tim) of Solon, Susie (and Mike) of Strafford, Mo., son-in-law Bobby Dyson of Springfield, Mo., grandchildren Jack and Liam, brother Jack (and Karen) Bowen of Oskaloosa, sister Kay (and Max) Simpkins of Ankeny, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation was Monday, Aug. 22, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa. Private graveside service was at Forest Cemetery, Tuesday, Aug. 23.
Memorials in Tom's honor may be made to the Solon Recreation and Nature Area Fund, the Solon High School Sports Complex or the Discovery Center of Springfield, Mo. Online condolences and memories may be expressed to the family at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Home.

Mary E. Broere
Mary Ella Broere, 60, of Marion, passed away on September 10, 2012 in her home following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Jacobsville Cemetery in Jacobsville, Michigan.
Surviving are her husband, Gerald (Jerry) Broere of Marion; her children, Andrew Broere and wife Stefanie and their children Landon, Lillian and Liam of McDonough, GA and Emily Broere of Greenville, South Carolina; her sisters, Nancy Anderson of Fort Gratiot, MI, Virginia Lorencz and husband Joe of San Leandro, CA and Phyllis Bergh of Munising, MI; her nephews, Jeff Anderson and wife Lynn, Joel Anderson and wife Tammy all of Port Huron, MI, Ben Lorencz of Castro Valley, CA, Matt Sutinen and wife Lisa of North Dakota and Jeff Sutinen of Louisiana; her nieces, Nora Dee and husband John and Amy Sutinen all of Mohawk, MI, Bethany Hardy and husband Patrick of Dallas, TX and Rachel and Rebekah both of San Leandro, CA; her aunt, Jinny Wagner of Fort Gratiot, MI; as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
Mary Ella was preceded in death by her parents.
Mary Ella Broere was born on February 3, 1952 in Duluth, Minnesota the daughter of Russell and June (Newton) Bergh. She was a graduate of Finlandia University and Western Michigan University. She was united in marriage to Gerald Donald Broere on June 8, 1974 in Calumet, Michigan. Mary Ella had been an active member of Friendship Baptist Church as well as a member of Village Place Chime group and Aid to Women. She loved sewing for her grandchildren and held various offices with the local American Sewing Guild chapter. She also taught sewing at the Bridgehaven Pregnancy Support Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mary Ella’s honor may be directed to the family for a future donation to the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Music Department.

Robert Rowell
Robert Rowell passed away late Sunday evening after a 3 year battle with cancer. A visitation is planned for Wednesday, February 6 at Cedar Memorial from 4 to 7 PM with the Masonic rites at 4:30 PM. The Celebration of Life will occur Thursday, February 7 at 11:30 AM at Echo Hill Presbyterian Church with Pastor Jim Langley officiating. Private burial with military rites will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Companion Robert Bishop Rowell, (Bob) was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on September 24, 1927, the son of Ray Bert Rowell and Lola A. Bishop Rowell. Bob had two brothers, Tom and Dick and one sister, Patty. Tom preceded Bob in death.
After graduation Bob served his country enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. For 37 years Bob worked at the Cedar Rapids Post Office.
Bob married the former Sally King (Flozella Mae King) at the 1st Methodist Church in Iowa City on April 21, 1945. To this union they raised 4 children, David, Lois, Mark, and Bill. Sally preceded Bob in death in May of 2003.
Bob leaves his children, grandchildren, and second wife, Roberta (Angell) Rowell as survivors. David and wife Therese (Reid) of Cedar Rapids, their child, Lindsay (Luke) Boeke and their two children, Ella and Addison of Round Lake, IL; Lois Ann husband David Bailey who made a career out of the Navy (21 yrs.) of Marion; Mark and wife Tami (Wilken) of Cedar Rapids, children Matthew, Katherine (both at Kirkwood College) and Taylor at Coe College; and Bill, and wife Sherry (Morris) who has one son, Jacob Mikkola (Iowa State University).
Bob was very active in Boy Scouts, was a Deacon at Knox Presbyterian Church and elected an Elder of 4 Presbyterian Churches in Cedar Rapids. Bob also served on the General Council of the Northeast Iowa Presbytery for several years.
After retirement in 1986, Bob volunteered at St. Luke’s, Mended Hearts and the V.A. in Iowa City.
Bob met the former Roberta Angell while at cardiac rehab and married in 2007.
Bob was been active in the Masonic Bodies since 1952. Mt. Hermon Lodge #263 AF&AM; Trowel Chapter #49; Royal Arch Masons where Bob served as High Priest in 1965, Palestine Council #21 Royal and Select Masters where he was illustrious Master in 1968 and Grand Master of R & S Masons for the State of Iowa.
Memorials may be made to The Ghosh Center or Hospice of St. Luke’s.

Leonard A. Dahms
Leonard A. Dahms of Cedar Rapids, died February 1, 2013 at the Hospice House of Mercy after a long battle with cancer. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Kenwood United Methodist Church at 175 - 34th Street NE by the Rev. Michael Metz. Private Interment: Maple Hill Cemetery, Gladbrook. Friends may call at the church after 9:30 a.m. Friday until time of service. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Leonard was born in Waterloo on February 27, 1922. His parents were Martha Gompert and William Dahms. The family moved from a farm near Finchford to Gladbrook in 1932. He graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Signal Corps from 1942 - 1946. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Electrical Engineering. On July 6, 1952 he married Dorene Allard in Gladbrook. He retired from Rockwell Collins in 1982 after 28 years.
Leonard enjoyed model railroading with his sons, gardening, repairing old radios and using his computer. He volunteered at the REACT Center in Hiawatha for the past ten years. He was a 50 year member of Olivet Lodge #436 A.F. & A.M. at Gladbrook and a member of Kenwood Park United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. He was a former member of the Cedar Rapids Camera Club and the Cedar Rapids Area Theater Organ Society. More recently he and his wife enjoyed ballroom dancing to Big Band music.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife of 60 years, Dorene and two sons, David W. Dahms of Windsor, CO, and Richard L. Dahms of Gladbrook.
The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Zenk of PCI for his compassionate care and to Rev. Michael Metz for his many visits while Leonard was sick.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Kenwood Park United Methodist Church or Camp Courageous.

Kathryn G. Brown
Kathryn G. Brown, 77, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa died Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital from a sudden illness. A funeral service celebrating Kathryn’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM Friday evening at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
She is survived by her loving husband, of 57 years, Alan Brown, two daughters Anna (Stephen) Strand of Marion; Lisa (Jim) Wichman of Sioux Falls, SD; a son Ron Brown of Marion; grandchildren, Kirk (Katie) Strand, Kyle (Staci) Strand, Kade Strand, April (Travis) Buysse, Andrea (DJ) Nelson, AJ Wichman, and Anissa Wichman; great grandchildren, Ethan Strand, Parker Buysse, and Mya Nelson; two sisters Ruby Hutchinson of San Francisco, CA; and Mable Hood of Galesburg, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Vernon Hutchinson.
Kathryn Brown was born March 19, 1935 in Chillicothe, MO the daughter of Oliver and Helen (Kasper) Hutchinson. She married Alan Brown on January 28, 1956 in Monmouth, IL. Her greatest job was as a mother and wife. Kathryn enjoyed sewing, collecting and selling antiques, bowling with her “Just an excuse” team and above all time with her family. She will forever be remembered for her kind smile and her love given to all. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be greatly missed.

Paul V. Downey Jr.
Paul V Downey, Jr. 12/24/1958 to 2/25/2013.
Paul, our dear brother, son, uncle, and friend joined his wife, Mary Catherine Downey and mother, Anne S. Downey on February 25th, 2013. A memorial celebration of Paul’s life will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 2nd, 2013 at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories.
He was born to Paul and Anne Downey on December 24, 1958 in Stuttgart Germany. He was married to Mary Catherine Neary on October 17th, 1992 until her death on June 13th, 1994.
Beloved brother of Missy Ragsdale, Peter Downey, Meg Erich; brother-in-law of Michael Ragsdale, Doug Erich. Dear uncle to Meghan, Michael, Heather, Braden, Shelby, Madeline, Bradley, Elizabeth, Anna. Faithful friend to many. Paul was Manager, Communications and Training – Employee Service Center for Transamerica of Cedar Rapids, IA.
