Bernard Q. Smith
10/04/1925 - 08/08/2005
Bernard Q. Smith, 79, of Kewanee, Il. died at 8:40 A.M. Monday, July 8, 2005 at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Il. He was born October 4, 1925 in Kewanee the son of Glenn and Alcie (Stegall) Smith. He attended Kewanee Schools. He joined the Navy at age seventeen and served four years during WWII in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.

He married Kay Williams June 22, 1952 in Kewanee. She survives along with one son Donald W. (Mary) Smith of Kewanee, one daughter Virginia (and Paul) Wurster of Des Plaines, Il., three grandchildren Shannon, Eric and Justin, three great grandchildren Caitlyn, Nadia and Camryn. Also surviving is one brother Kenneth Smith of Arizona and one sister Charlotte (Mrs. Harold) Matchett of Kewanee. His parents and four brothers Gerald, Don, John and Dean preceded him in death.

He was employed by May Electric and Nixon Electric in Kewanee until his retirement in 1987.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kewanee, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union for 50 years, Kewanee American Legion Post and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, camping with his family, stamp collecting and woodworking. He was honored by “Mechanics Illustrated” Magazine for a gun case he had made.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday, August 12, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Dr. Kevin Siscoe of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. to the time of services on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church of Kewanee.

Evelyn Gamble
12/08/1914 - 08/09/2005
Evelyn Gamble, 90, of Kewanee, Il. died at 1:10 P.M. Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at Toulon Health Care Center, Toulon, Il. She was born December 8, 1914 in Kewanee, Il. the daughter of Gust and Hulda C. (Larson) Norquist.

She married David F. Gamble May 4, 1941 in Kewanee. He died January 3, 1984. Her parents, three sisters Edna Karau, Alice Hoyt and Alma Steinwal and one brother Rueben Blain also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters Joy (and Bill) Todd of Cambridge, Il., and Mary Beth (and Bob) Jones of Kewanee, Il. Six grandchildren Jennifer (Tom) Black, Joselyn Todd, Shawn Todd, Amylyn (Ben) Robbins, Tanya (Jeff) Bohac and Ryan (Holly) Jones and seven great grandchildren Chelsie, Megan, Sidney, Taylor, Jordan, Addison and Tobias.

A homemaker, she was a life long member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Kewanee, Lake Calhoun Golf and Lake Club, Flemish American Club and American Legion Aux.

She enjoyed playing cards, golfing, sewing, the “Boats”, morning coffee with her McDonald’s friends and spending time with her family.

Cremation rites will be accorded and Private Family Inurnment will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. at a later date. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kewanee. The Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby C. Bailleu
12/24/1913 - 08/22/2005
Ruby C. Bailleu, 91, of Kewanee, Il. died at 10:03 A.M. Monday, August 22, 2005 at Kewanee Care Home. She was born December 24, 1913 in Kentucky the daughter of Elzie B. and Celia B. (Hanners) Barnes. The family moved to Kewanee where she married Walter Bailleu on June 20, 1936. He preceded her in death October 2, 1997. Her parents, two sisters Ora Mae Green and Juanita VanWynsberg and three brothers Lee, Willard and Chestine Barnes also preceded her in death.

Surviving is one sister Romona (Mrs. Eugene) Carlson of Kewanee, numerous nieces and nephews.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Church of Peace, rural Kewanee and it’s Women’s Guild.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending time with family.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. Friday, August 26, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee. Rev. Betty Hornback of the Church of Peace will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee. Visitation will be from noon to the time of services on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Church of Peace.

Floyd A. “Flip” VanWaes
11/26/1919 - 08/25/2005
Floyd A. “Flip” VanWaes, 85, of Kewanee, Il. died at 4:30 P.M. Thursday, August 25, 2005 in the emergency room at Kewanee Hospital. He was born November 26, 1919 in Kewanee the son of Bernard and Izelma (Hedburg) VanWaes. He was reared and educated in Kewanee. He served in the Army during WWII.

He married Daisy Jones in 1941 in Kewanee. They were later divorced. He married Emma Pauwels January 3, 1948 in Cambridge, Il. She died December 7, 1995. His parents and one brother Bernard also preceded him in death.

Surviving is a daughter Carol (and Bill) Brackett of Kewanee and one son Bill VanWaes of Kewanee. Eight grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren and one sister Donna (and Robert) Lloyd of Tucson, Az.

He was employed for 37 years at General Telephone in Kewanee working as Head Craftsman and retiring out of the office in 1976. He enjoyed woodworking and his dog “Trouble”

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Dr. James Breed of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee where military honors will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Kewanee Animal Shelter.

Elbert Robert “Albert" Craver
12/01/1942 - 08/25/2005
Elbert Robert “Albert” Craver, 62, of Danville, Il. and formerly of Kewanee, Il. died 2.35 P.M. Thursday, August 25, 2005 at the V.A. Hospital in Danville, Il.

He was born December 1, 1942 in Detroit, Mi. the son of Elbert and Irene L. (Westlund) Craver. He served in the Army during the Viet Nam War.

He was a self employed printer in Kewanee for many years prior to retirement. Surviving is one sister Roxanne Ullman of Michigan, cousins Donald (Jean) Lucke, Dick (Edna) Day, Maryann Klavohn, Carol (Mike) Durnel all of Kewanee and Joe, Robert, Richard and Mary Potvin all of Lansing, Michigan.

His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 29, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Dan Craig will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, rural Kewanee where the Kewanee Veterans Council will accord military honors. There will be no visitation.

Alfred Paul “Al” Brown

Alfred Paul “Al” Brown, 80, of Kewanee, Il. died at 10:30 P.M. Sunday, September 4, 2005 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Il.

He was born March 13, 1925 in Mattoon, Il. the son of Elmer and Lorena (Basham) Brown. He graduated from Humboldt, Il. High School. He married Betty M. McNaught November 24, 1949 in Kewanee. She survives along with a daughter Marcia (and David) Sunquist of Sun Lakes, Az and one son David Brown of Kewanee. Also surviving is a grandson Justin Brown and one sister Louise (and Russell) Wiley of Mattoon, Il. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Floyd Brown, infant daughter Carol Suzanne Brown and Son-in-law Eric “Rick” Kull.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving January of 1946 to April of 1947 stationed in Japan and Korea. Following his service he moved to Kewanee where he was employed by his uncle at Lilly’s Auto Supply. He later worked at Demler Manufacturing, sold insurance and retired from Martin Engineering in 1990.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kewanee and had served on various boards of the Church. He was also involved with the Boy Scouts, Jaycees locally. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf, wood and metal working, and playing cards with family and the “card club” that met monthly for nearly 50 years.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 8, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens, rural Kewanee where military honors will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Wednesday, September 7th at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church, Macular Degeneration Foundation, Inc. or the American Red Cross Hurricane Fund.

Harold T. Johnson
08/02/1908 - 09/05/2005
Harold T. Johnson, 97, of Punta Gorda, Fl. and formerly of Kewanee died Monday, September 5, 2005 in Fl.

He was born August 2, 1908 in Kewanee the son of Axel and Anna (Fosberg) Johnson. He was reared and educated in Kewanee. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a military police officer. He married Dorothy Adelaide Bates in 1948. She survives along with a cousin Loyd Bowman of Galena, Il.

Harold was the sheriff of Henry County, Il. from 1950-54, 1958-1962, 1966-1970 and served as chief deputy from 1954-1958 and 1962-1966. Following his retirement, the couple moved to Punta Gorda in 1970. He had served as president of the Illinois Sheriff’s Association. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kewanee, a life member of the Kewanee American Legion Post #31 and a charter member of the Punta Gorda Elks Lodge 2606. In his younger days, he was active in football, basketball and baseball and was a star softball pitcher. He was an avid bowler and golfer until the age of 90.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 12, 2006 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. K. Bruce Rushing of the First United Methodist Church of Kewanee will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Kewanee, Il. where military honors will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Friday. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Randall E. “Randy” Spring
03/24/1953 - 09/06/2005
Randall E. “Randy” Spring, 52, of rural Neponset, Il. died at 4:15 P.M. Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at his home. He was born March 24, 1953 in Macomb, Il. the son of Sam and Joyce (Caldwell) Spring. He graduated from Alexis High School in 1971. He married Nancy Nelson May 25, 1974 in Elmira, Il.

She survives along with his parents of North Henderson, Il., two brothers Chris (Lynne) Spring of Oneida, Il., Jr. (Dee) Spring of Rockford, Il. three sisters; Pam (Stuart) Bjorgan of Detroit Lakes, Mn., Sally Logsdon of Madison, Mi. and Michele (Brett) Jones of Tampico, Il. Nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents and one nephew.

He had farmed in the Neponset area and earlier had worked for Elmira Twp and Hatzer & Nordstrom Equipment Co. in Annawan. He was a member of the Stark County Farm Bureau and the Kewanee and Galva Bowling Associations. He enjoyed bowling, was a St. Louis Cardinal and Green Bay Packer fan and loved spending time with his family.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 10, 2005 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. Rev. Terry Lancaster of the Mineral United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Osceola, Il. cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 P.M. Friday, September 9th at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Neponset Fire District or the Kewanee Hospital Foundation.

Doris Aileen Davis
09/12/1926 - 09/09/2005
Doris Aileen Davis, 78, of Kewanee, Il. died at 7:55 A.M. Friday, September 9, 2005 at Royal Oaks Health Care Center in Kewanee. She was born September 12, 1926 in Toulon, Illinois the daughter of John Hardy and Ethel (Buskirk) Porter. She was reared and educated in Toulon.

She married Robert Ellis Davis. He preceded her in death November 13, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother James Porter.

Surviving are two sons Thomas E. (Marge) Davis and Robert M. Davis all of Kewanee. One daughter Beth A. (Mrs. Paul) Wiese of Sheffield, Il. Three grandchildren and one great grandchild and one brother Bob Porter of Wyoming, Il.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a Nurses Aide and later Activities Director for the former Leisure Hills and Kewanee Convalescent Center now Royal Oaks.

She enjoyed NASCAR and was a Dallas Cowboys fan.

Graveside services will be at 9:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 13, 2005. Pastor Dan Craig will officiate. There will be no visitation. The Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Il. is in charge of the arrangements. A memorial fund has been established and contributions may be left at the funeral home.
