Dante G. Scarpelli, M.D., professor and former chair of pathology at the Medical School, died Sept. 12 [1998] at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service for Dr. Scarpelli, 71, was held at the Northminster Presbyterian Church in Evanston.
Dr. Scarpelli joined the Medical School faculty in 1976 and served as chair for the next 16 years. He previously had served as chairman of pathology at the University of Kansas from 1966 to 1976 and was a member of the Ohio State University faculty from 1960 to 1966.
He was a member of 20 professional societies, published more than 130 papers and served on various national committees, serving as chair of the advisory committee for the Registry of Comparative Pathology since 1978.
Dr. Scarpelli, an accomplished cancer researcher, aimed his efforts at uncovering the chemical causes of cancer and identifying human genes susceptible to cancer mutations.
A native of Padua, Italy, he was honored with a Gold Medal for ³Paduans Who Have Honored Italy.²
Dr. Scarpelli received a bachelorıs degree from Baldwin-Wallace College and masterıs, medical and doctoral degrees from Ohio State. He completed residency and fellowship training at the University Hospital in Columbus and the Postgraduate Medical School in London.
He is survived by his wife, Harriett; a son, Michael; two daughters, Harriett Trangucci and April Mosser; and five grandchildren.
