Rose Matzenbacher, nee Mueth, 96, of Red Bud, died June 26, 2009, in Red Bud. She was born Oct. 10, 1912, in Waterloo, the daughter of the late Benedick and Mary Ann (nee Dugan) Mueth. She was married to Oscar Matzenbach-er. He died in 1991. Mrs. Matzenbacher is survived by her children, Vernon (Dorothy) Matzenbacher of Fults, JoAnn (Eldon) Roider of Columbia, David (Susan) Matzenbacher of Red Bud, Larry (Jane) Matzenbacher of Fults and Gary (Barbara) Matzenbacher of Red Bud; a daughter-in-law, Doris Matzenbacher of Waterloo; a sister; Gertrude Swanter of Bridgeton, Mo.; a brother, Patrick (Katie) Crook of Fairview Heights; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Edwin and Shannon Matzenbacher of Waterloo; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by a step-father; a son, Donald Matzenbacher; great-grandson, Bradley Matzen-bacher; sister, Mayme Hellmer; and a brother, Joe Crook. Mrs. Matzenbacher was a member of St. Paul UCC in Waterloo. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service was held at St. Paul UCC in Waterloo with Pastor Doug Roberts officiating. Mrs. Matzenbacher was buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo.

Louis Jay Dyroff, 67, of Dupo died June 26, 2009 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born May 28, 1942 in St. Louis, Mo. He was preceded in death by his father, Erwin Dyroff. Mr. Dyroff is survived by his mother, Pauline Dyroff of Dupo; and brothers David (Jo) Dyroff and Terry (Pat) Dyroff; along with nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Dyroff graduated from Dupo Community High School as president of his senior class. After earning a Bachelor's Degree from Southern Illinois University, he went on to teach U.S. history and civics at East Peoria Community High School starting in 1966. He retired in 1993 and later returned to Dupo. He was an accomplished singer and performed at many church, school and civic functions. In retirement, he was an active member of Christ United Church of Christ in Dupo, where he sang in the church choir and at many weddings and funerals. Mr. Dyroff's love of travel took him to every state in the Union and every country in North, Central and South America as well as others in the Caribbean, Europe and the South Pacific. He occasionally worked as a tour guide with his brother Terry during the summers. Mr. Dyroff was an active volunteer with several civic organizations including the Lions Club, Meals On Wheels and the Dupo Educators' Hall of Fame. Visitation was at the Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo. A funeral was at Christ United Church of Christ in Dupo the Rev. Kim Kelly officiating. Burial was at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville. Memorials may be made to his church.

Harlan Wentzel, 76, of Collinsville, died July 2, 2009, at his residence. He was born Aug. 16, 1932, in Gwinner, ND, the son of the late Karl and Magdalena (nee Quindel) Wentzel. He married Irene (Wolf) Wentzel in 1957. In addition to his wife, Mr. Wentzel is survived by his children, Loren (Debra) Wentzel of Troy, David (Lisa) Wentzel of Maryville, Carol (Brian) Hart of Waterloo and Ellen (Mike) Mikovich of Collinsville; a sisters Erna Greenwald of Wayne, Neb., Donna Bresemann of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho and Doris Burns of Troy, Mo.; brothers Herman Wentzel of Roseville, Minn. and Ernest Wentzel of Glen Carbon; and five grandchildren. Mr. Wentzel was a retired Collinsville school teacher, worked with United Spraying Service and volunteered at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. Visitation was at Herr Funeral Home in Collinsville. Funeral was held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo with Rev. Fred Kramer officiating. Mr. Wentzel was buried at the Waterloo City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, the American Cancer Society or Creation Science Evangelism.

Marion Ries, nee Gummersheimer, 78, of rural Columbia, died July 2, 2009 at her residence. She was born Jan. 27, 1931 in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Theodore and Alfrieda (nee Weltig) Gummersheimer. She married Harvey Ries in 1951. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Ries is survived by her children Diana Hamilton, Duane Ries (friend Ellen), Dean (Sharon) Ries, Donald (Debbie K.) Ries and Debbie (Rich) Koch; grandchildren Sondra (Mark) Hampton, Jeremy (Katie) Ries, Nathaniel Hamilton, Kimberly Ries, Amber (John) Quade, Amanda Koch, Timothy (Erin) Ries, John Ries, Shawn Koch, Mark Ries and Ben Gates; great-grandchildren Steven Hampton, Emrick Hamilton and Benjamin Kent; and sisters Iona Juengling, Evelyn (Kenneth) Stumpf and Jean (Marcellus) Eckert. Mrs. Ries was a member of the local Home and Community Extension for more than 50 years. She served on various offices on the county and state level, including state board president. She was also a member of St. Paul UCC in Columbia where she served as a past-president of the Women's Fellowship, a longtime 4-H leader; the superintendent of photography for the Monroe County Fair, a member of Monroe County Farm Bureau, was active in Modern Woodman’s Floraville Camp, Sister Cities of Portaloo and organized the local chapter of TOPS. At Marion’s request, her body was donated to the Washington University School of Medicine. A memorial service was held at St. Paul UCC in Columbia with Pastors Bob Goddard and Kris Avise-Rouse officiating. Memorials may be made to her church, Monroe County HCE, Monroe County Fair or 4-H Foundation.

Cora Clara Esther Muskopf, nee Zahn, 86, of Millstadt, died July 1, 2009, at Oak Hill in Waterloo. She was born Oct. 18, 1922 in Columbia, the daughter of the late George and Clara (nee Otten) Zahn. Mrs. Muskopf is survived by her children, David (Sandra) Muskopf of Millstadt, Dianne Mehrmann of Waterloo and Debbie (Gary) Helfrich of Millstadt; special friend, Warren Baltz of Belleville; grandchildren Joshua Musk-opf, Randall (Renee) Mehrmann, Dustin (Sarah) Mehrmann and Brian Helfrich; great-grandchildren David Mehrmann, Randi Mari Mehrmann and Riley Mehrmann; and sisters Emma Schmierbach of Glenda, Ariz., and Violet Carter of Kentucky; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Emil Muskopf; son-in-law, Robert Mehrmann; and a grandson, Aaron Adam Helfrich. Mrs. Muskopf was a bookkeeper for her husband’s petroleum business and also worked at the Millstadt Liquor Store. She was an active member of Zion Evangelical Church in Millstadt, where she quilted and participated in the Women’s Fellowship and Zionette Kitchen Band. Visitation was at Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt. Funeral was at Strauss-Leesman with Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. Mrs. Muskopf was buried at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery in Millstadt. Memorials may be made to the Millstadt Senior Center, Zion Evangelical Church of Peace Lutheran Church in Belleville.

Robert J. Schilling, 83, of Millstadt, formerly of Valmeyer, died June 17, 2010 in Belleville. He was born January 3, 1927, the son of the late Martin and Louise (nee Einwich) Schilling. Mr. Schilling is survived by his wife, Elsie J. Schilling, nee Tylka; children Robert Paul (Debbie) Schilling, Barbara Ann Gaubert and Dennis (Dorothy) Schilling; 10 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters Irene (Vernon) Heine, Myrtle Laurent and Maydell (John) Huetsch; and a brother, Leroy Schilling; along with step-children, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen (nee Mechler) Schilling; and son-in-law, Richard Gaubert. Mr. Schilling was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church in Waterloo. Visitation is Friday, June 18, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Saturday, June 19, 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Matt Friz officiating. Mr. Schilling will be buried at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Irene H. Sickmeier, nee Heller, 88, of Waterloo, died June 17, 2010 in Red Bud. She was born July 29, 1921, the daughter of the late Joseph and Ernestine (nee Schleifer) Heller. Mrs. Sickmeier is survived by her children, Norma (Robert) Coffel, Gloria Sickmeier Goddard, Jerry Sickmeier, Gail Ray (friend Brian Springton), Steven (Carolyn) Sickmeier, Lynn (Craig) Yearous and Roger (Angie) Sickmeier; 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Verna Heller; along with nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe O. Sickmeier; brothers William and Albert Heller; sisters Lydia Mueller, Emma Harms, Frieda Mennerich and Anna Heller; and son-in-law Donald Goddard. Mrs. Sickmeier was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Visitation is Sunday, June 20, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Monday, June 21, at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo with Pastor Matt Clark officiating. Mrs. Sickmeier will be buried at the Waterloo City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Family Hospice.

Adelia E. Stunkel, nee Lindhorst, 96, formerly of Wood River, died June 17, 2010 in New Athens. She was born Feb. 25, 1914, the daughter of the late John L. and Elizabeth C. (nee Mirgain) Lindhorst. Mrs. Stunkel was married to the late Edwin Stunkel. Mrs. Stunkel is survived by a daughter, Janice (Charles) Schmidt of Marissa; grandson, Gary (Mindy) Schmidt of Waterloo; great-grandchildren Isabella Marie Schmidt and Brayden Mathew Schmidt; and a sister, Viola Spicer of Granite City; along with other relative and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Dina Lindhorst, Bertha Schneider and Rose Eberhart; brothers Emil, Edwin, Heinrich, John, Arthur and Charlie Lindhorst. Adelia was a member of Eden United Church of Christ. Visitation is Friday, June 18, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home in Columbia. Funeral is Saturday, June 19, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Gail Geisel officiating. Mrs. Stunkel will be buried at Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to Eden Church, the Alzheimer’s Association or Passages Hospice.

Charles L. Yarbrough, 80, of Waterloo, died June 18, 2010 in Waterloo. He was born Feb. 17, 1930, the son of the late Charles and Minerva (nee Nickelson) Yarbrough. Mr. Yarbrough is survived by his wife, Imogene (nee Fries) Yarbrough; son, Craig (Nancy) Yarbrough; granddaughter, Sarah A. Yarbrough; great-grandson, Easton Rayfield; and sisters Bertha (Leroy) Hoffman and Blanche (Robert) Schneider; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Yarbrough; brothers Joseph, Robert, Alvin and Rolland Yarbrough; and sisters Helen Todd and Ruth Tauber. Mr. Yarbrough serves in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Paul UCC in Waterloo, Metzger-Crook VFW Post 6504 and Morris Lodge 787. Visitation is Sunday, June 20, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is June 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul UCC in Waterloo with Pastor David Gerth officiating. Mr. Yarbrough will be buried at St. John Cemetery in Valmeyer at a later date. Memorials may be made to his church.

Joan Y. Schneider, 72, of St. Louis, Mo. died June 19, 2010 in St. Louis. She was born July 23, 1937, the daughter of the late Fred and Elenora (nee Mehrtens) Schneider. Mrs. Schneider is survived by her siblings, Marion (Ray) Westholt, Vernell Rippelmeyer, Bob (Gloria) Schneider, Willard (Ann) Schneider, Marlene Cripps, Marvin Schneider and Sharon Schneider; along with nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, a great-great-niece, a great-great nephew and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brothers Glen and Ronald Schneider; a brother-in-law, Melvin Rippelmeyer; sisters-in-law Nadine and Donna Schneider; and a nephew, Sean Schneider. There was no visitation. A private graveside service will be held at St. John Cemetery in Valmeyer with Pastor Matt Friz officiating. Quernheim Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
