Daniel J. Barnes, 70, of Waterloo, died Feb. 4, 2011 in Waterloo. He was born Oct. 18, 1940 in Sidney, Iowa, the son of the late Louis and Frances (nee Means) Barnes. Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife, Kathleen (nee Sieli) Barnes; children Penny (Terry) Hill, Richard (Kathy) Barnes, Charles (Lorretta) Barnes and William (Monica) Bandy; sisters Pat (Jerry) Hume and Elaine (Gene) Smith; and sisters-in-law Margaret (Bill) Simmons, Frances (Mike) Hanners and Mary (Bill) Dowers; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by sisters and brothers. Mr. Barnes was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired union machinist at Southside Machine Works in St. Louis, Mo. Visitation is Monday, Feb. 7, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. at Hope Christian Church in Columbia with Pastor Darrell Jones officiating. Mr. Barnes will be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Monroe County.

Florence I. Hesterberg, nee Hoffmann, 82, of Maeystown, died Feb. 23, 2011 at her residence following a brief illness. She was born Sept. 3, 1928, in rural Maeystown, the daughter of the late Henry and Alma (nee Krone) Hoffmann. Mrs. Hesterberg is survived by her husband of 61 years, Wilbert "Whip" Hesterberg; children, Shirley (Allen) Stafford, David (Lauren) Hesterberg, Kathleen (Miguel) Engbring, Dean (Charlotte) Hesterberg and Lynne (Randy) Hicks; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren; along with nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Jamie Lynne Hesterberg; and a brother, Louis H. Hoffmann; along with brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins and many friends. Mrs. Hesterberg retired after 35 years of employment from the Monroe County Nursing Home. In recent years she was a volunteer at Oak Hill and Canterbury Manor Nursing Homes in Waterloo and the Valmeyer Elementary School. She was also busy every May during the Maeystown Homecoming. Florence was a lifelong member of St. John United Church of Christ in Maeystown where she was involved in the Women’s Fellowship and choir for 67 years. She was also a member of the Valmeyer American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Valmeyer Senior Citizens and Maeystown Preservation Society. Visitation is Friday, Feb. 25, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Saturday, Feb. 26, at 10 a.m., at St. John UCC in Maeystown with Pastor Patrick Poole officiating. Mrs. Hesterberg will be buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John UCC Choir.

Vernon Scott Marlen, 83, of East Carondelet, died Feb. 23, 2011 at South County Nursing Home in Arnold, Mo. He was born Jan. 16, 1928, in Dupo, the son of the late Edward and Nellie “Babe” (nee Fanger) Marlen. He married Betty (Small) Marlen in 1948. In addition to his wife, Mr. Marlen is survived by his children, Vernon Scotty (Toni) Marlen of Wichita, Kan., Donald Louis (Nancy) Marlen of Columbia, Deborah Lynn (Mark) Schmidt of Columbia and Kristin Kay (Scott) Wittenbrink of Columbia; grandchildren, Michael and Darren Marlen, David and Eric Marlen, Ashley, Tara, Brittney and Toree Schmidt and Savannah, Blair and Drake Wittenbrink; a sisters, Dolores Marie (Paul) Koblitz of Columbia, Della Imogene (Al) Groce of Dupo and Joyce Ann Holmes of Columbia; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rusty Marlen of La Verne, Calif., Pat Small of Columbia and Claude (Marie) Small of Cahokia; along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eddie Marlen; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bob Small, Katherine Small, George "Buck" (Dorothy) Maxwell, William "Bill" (Pauline) Small Jr., and Oliver "King" (Bernice) Hotto. Mr. Marlen was a retired purchasing director with McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis, Mo. where he managed the F-18 materials program. Vernon had played Minor League baseball for the New York Yankees. He was a charter member of Hilltoppers Swim Club in rural Dupo, the Dupo Khoury League, Dupo Quarterback Club, a former Dupo School Board president, a member of the Shriner's Ainad Temple of East St. Louis, Emeth Lodge 1030, AF and AM of Cahokia and the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Southern Illinois. Vernon attended the First Baptist Church in Dupo and was recently inducted into the Dupo Walk of Honor in the village park. Visitation is Friday, Feb. 25, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Dupo. Funeral is Saturday, Feb. 26, at 10 a.m., at the church with Pastor Roger Reid officiating. Mr. Marlen will be buried at the Valhalla Gardens Of Memory in Belleville. Arrangements were handled by Lawlor Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to his church’s building fund.

Lucille M. Lenhardt, 95, of Waterloo, died Feb. 23, 2011 in Waterloo. She was born Dec. 28, 1915 in Waterloo, the daughter of the late Charles and Luella (nee Goeddel) Lenhardt. Ms. Lenhardt is survived by cousins and friends. Ms. Lenhardt was a teacher for 37 years. After completing a two-year teacher’s training course at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, she taught at Holcomb School in Coxeyville for eight years. Lucille continued her education with summer and evening courses, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree from McKendree College. She then taught third grade in the Waterloo Elementary School for 29 years, with the last year being in the then newly-built W.J. Zahnow Elementary School. In her later years of teaching, Ms. Lenhardt taught the second generation of students with many of the children stating she had taught one or both of their parents. Lucille also taught Sunday School for 54 years at St. Paul UCC in Waterloo. She was also active the church in the Quilters Circle and Women’s Guild. Lucille was also member of the Morrison-Talbott Library’s Friends Of The Library. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Waterloo with Pastor Mary Beth Hartenstein and Pastor Dick Sparrow officiating. Ms. Lenhardt was buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to her church.

Raymond M. Enke , 81, of Columbia, formerly of St. Louis, Mo., died Feb. 25, 2011 at Columbia Convalescent Center. He was born Oct. 19, 1929 in Bem, Mo., the son of the late William and Lydia (Pietraschke) Enke. He was married Katherine (nee Bell) Enke. She died in 1996. Mr. Enke is survived by his children, Susan (Steven) Oswill and Steve Enke, both of Columbia; grandchildren, Collin, Carter and Ava Enke; and siblings Arthur (Irma) Enke of Owensville, Mo., Arnie Enke of Owensville, Mo., Donald (Chirley) Enke of Owensville, Mo., Mildred (Donald) Treece of Cuba, Mo., and Marion Paul (Sharon) Enke of St. Charles, Mo. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Beulah Rutz. Mr. Enke served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a retired administrator with the U.S. Postal Service. Raymond attended Bethesda United Church of Christ in St. Louis, Mo. and was a member of the VFW Post 6133 in Owensville, Mo. Visitation is Monday, Feb. 28, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral is Tuesday, March 1, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John UCC in Bern, Mo., with Pastor Rick Oberle officiating. Mr. Enke will be buried at the St. John UCC Cemetery in Bern, Mo. Memorials may be made to Owensville, Mo. VFW Hall.

George C. Larsen, 94, of Waterloo, died Feb. 25, 2011 in Waterloo. He was born Feb. 9, 1917 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late Clarence and Anna (nee Becht) Larsen. Mr. Larsen is survived by his wife, Marie (nee Shatlain) Larsen; children Barbara (Jerry) Rachell and Terry (Pam) Larsen; grandchildren Mike (Jill) Larsen, Gary Larsen and Eric (Melissa) Larsen; grandchildren Reed Larsen, Jena Larsen, Steven (Lara) Schmidt, John Schmidt, Ryan Schmidt, Amanda (Patrick) Fromme, Raina (Dan) Lewis and Guinevere (Mike) Winschel; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death recently by his son, Kenny Larsen. Mr. Larsen attended SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo. Visitation is Sunday, Feb. 27, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Monday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m., at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo with Father Osang Idagbo officiating. Memorials may be made to the SS. Peter and Paul School Expansion Fund or Heartland Hospice.

Charles E. "Buddy" Miller Sr., 73, of Waterloo, died Feb. 27, 2011 in Waterloo. He was born July 13, 1937 in East St. Louis, the son of the late Ernest and Ida Belle (nee Follis) Miller. Mr. Miller is survived by his wife of 52 years, Billie (nee Isbill) Miller; children Darlene (Dennis) Farney, Christine (Mike) Brinkmann and Charles "Chuck" Jr. (Laura) Miller; grandchildren Blake Miller, Courtney Miller, Brendan Miller, Benjamin Farney, Will Farney, Lauren Miller, Nicole Brinkmann, Tyler and Dylan Brinkmann; and Abby, Davin and Mitchell Kohnz; great-grandchildren Jackson Miller, Myla Miller and Charley Funk; a brother, Billy Miller; sisters Helen (Tracy) Wilson, Donna Bodendieck and Diane (Paul) Stoneking; sister-in-law, Barbara (Norris) Lutz; and brothers-in-law Richard (Nedra) Isbill, Terry (Patty) Isbill and Douglas (Diane) Isbill; along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters Shirley (Jim) Lowe and Marilyn (George) Latimer, infant brothers Ernest and Sonny Miller; and brothers-in-law Paul Stoneking and Tracy Wilson. Mr. Miller attended Lafayette Grade School and then graduated from Dupo High School. He was a retired switchman after 28 and a half years with the Alton and Southern Railroads, later the Union Pacific Railroad. Buddy then worked for the Corps of Engineers Park System. His favorite past time was camping with family and friends and he was always ready for a game of pinochle. Visitation is Tuesday, March 1, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Wednesday, March 2, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Matt Friz officiating. Mr. Miller will be buried at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights. Memorials may be made to a local food pantry.

Pauline R. Fortner, nee Loyd, of Waterloo, died March 1 2011 in St. Louis, Mo. She was born Dec. 20, 1927 in Fisk, Mo., the daughter of the late Ted and Ida Bell (nee Sanders) Loyd. Mrs. Fortner is survived by her children, Barbara Boyer (Glen Roberts) of Waterloo, David (Pat) Fortner of Waterloo and Brenda (Dan) Vande Riet of Shiloh; grandchildren, Jason Lewis, Daniel (Carolyn) Vande Riet Jr., Matt (Meagan) Vande Riet, Sarah Vande Riet (fiancé Drew Gerhart), Carrie (Jeff) DeRousse, Jennifer (Andrew) Tsung, Josh (Kayla) Boyer, Tim (Donna) Roberts and Kevin Bevins; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Campbell, Christopher Vande Riet, Daniel Vande Riet III, Dominic Vande Riet, Rebecca Vande Riet, Steffen DeRousse, Austin DeRousse, Isaac Tsung, Lydia Boyer, Ashleigh Roberts, Devin Jones and Adriana Roberts; sisters, Christine (Don) Aydelotte and Mary (Jim) Beyer; and brothers, Cletis (Gloria) Loyd, Kenny Loyd and Ray (Joan) Loyd; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her Dave A. Fortner; and brothers Walter (Eileen) Loyd and Ralph (Dee) Loyd. Mrs. Fortner attended New Life Church in Waterloo, and was a homemaker who loved animals and flowers. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home with Pastor David Echstadt officiating. Mrs. Fortner was buried at Waterloo City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Canterbury Manor Nursing Home.

Lester O. Boehm, 86, of Millstadt, died March 5, 2011 at Canterbury Manor in Waterloo. He was Oct. 28, 1924 in Stookey Township, the son of the late Arthur and Emma (nee Haas) Boehm. Mr. Boehm is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley (nee Blick) Boehm; a daughter, Denise Boehm of Millstadt; his son, Dr. Dwight (Dr. Liz Vollmer DVM) Boehm DVM of Waterloo; grandchildren Mitch and Emma Boehm; and sisters-in-law Gloria Boehm, Irma Hecke and Goldie Boland, all of Millstadt; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Becky Lynn Boehm; bothers Alfred, Wilbert, Raymond, Elmer, Arthur, Edwin, Harvey and Lorraine Boehm; and a sister, Florence Mitchell. Mr. Boehm served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired after 30 years as a repair man for Peabody Coal. Lester was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Millstadt, the Millstadt VFW Post 7980 and Millstadt American Legion Post 502. He loved to play Kloepper and belonged to the Wartburg Kloepper league, where he taught his son, Dwight many of his secrets to mastering the card game. His son was once crowned the King Of Kloepper. Lester also enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting and gardening. Visitation is Monday, March 7, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt. Funeral is Tuesday, March 8, at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Millstadt with Rev. Michael Kumm officiating. Mr. Boehm will be buried at Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Millstadt. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Millstadt, Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg or Heartland Hospice.

Patrick C. Sondag Sr., 51, of Valmeyer, died March 5, 2011 in Valmeyer. He was born Jan. 16, 1960 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late Glennon and Caryl Fay (nee Meyer) Sondag. Mr. Sondag is survived by his children Parker and Patrick Sondag Jr.; siblings Doug (Rhonda) Sondag, Zoe Ann (Lyle) Schwarze, Glenda (Steven) Sexauer and Barb (Kathryn Porterfield) Sondag; aunts and uncles Helen Sondag, Margie May, Ted and Pauline Sondag and Joe and Evelyn Sondag; nieces and nephews Amber (Craig) Manville, Jennifer (Jeremy) Eckenfels, Ashley Sondag, Jonathan Schwarze, Allison Schwarze, Zeke Sexauer, Auggie Sexauer, Andreas Zodhiates, Ariel Zodhiates and Alexandra Zodhiates; and great-nephew, Camden Manville; along with cousins and friends. Mr. Sondag was a lifelong farmer with his brother Doug, who operated a fourth-generation farm in rural Valmeyer. He was a member of the Monroe County Farm Bureau and St. Mary Catholic Church in Valmeyer. His passion included family and cooking. Visitation is Monday, March 7, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Tuesday, March 8, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Valmeyer with Father Urban Osuji officiating. Mr. Sondag will be buried at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to the Parker and Patrick Jr. Education Fund or masses at his church.
