Deborah H. West, 63, of Waterloo, died Nov. 19, 2013, in Waterloo. She was born July 2, 1950, in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late James and Wanda (nee Sands) West. Mrs. West is survived by her husband, Thomas E. Pautler; son, Brad (Elise) Finnerty; and granddaughters, Michaela Finnerty, Hannah Finnerty and Katherine Finnerty. Mrs. West was preceded in death by her first husband, Michael Finnerty. Mrs. West was a longtime employee of Human Support Services. She was a member of Retrievers Unlimited (Hunting Retriever Champion) and the Pink Whistle Society (President). Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tipton with Father John Kizhak officiating. Memorials may be made to Human Support Services, Pink Whistle Society, Monroe County Humane Society or the Robert "Odie" Mathews Local Families In Need Foundation .

Lynne Irene May, 79, of Gerald, Mo., died Nov. 21, 2013, at Mercy Hospital. She was born June 18, 1934, in Turlock, Calif., the daughter of the late Franklin and Genevieve (nee Sorenson) Mayes. Lynne married Lionel A. May in 1952, in Reno, Nev. In addition to her husband, Mrs. May is survived by her children, Judie Lynne Carter of Columbia, Debra (William) Marlene Horvath of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Michael (Sally) Jon May of Columbia; grandchildren, Tracie (Bryan) Girard, Sunnie Carter, Matthew Horvath, Todd Carter, Andrew May and Sarah May; great-grandchildren, Courtney Girard, Kyle Girard and Genevieve Eschmann; and sisters, Judith (Frank) Dutra of Livingston, Calif., and Susan (Wendell) Hammon of Merced, Calif.; along with nieces and nephews. Mrs. May was a volunteer with Meals On Wheels and the Gerald Public Library. She loved to travel and was of the Lutheran faith. Visitation and funeral were at Lawlor Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

Spencer Z. AuBuchon, 87, of Fults, died Nov. 21, 2013, in Red Bud. He was born April 6, 1926, in St. Louis, the son of the late Spencer E. and Ann M. (nee Griekshot) AuBuchon. Mr. AuBuchon is survived by his sister, Joan (Donald) Shelton; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Virginia Lyman, Evelyn Gremand and Marilyn Loehr; and brothers, Louis E. AuBuchon and Joseph AuBuchon (in infancy). Mr. AuBuchon attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Renault. He was a member of the VFW. At his request, there were no visitation or funeral.

James K. Hern, 75, of Waterloo, died Nov. 25, 2013. He was born June 8, 1938, in St. Louis, the son of the late Harry and Thema (nee Jackson) Hern. Mr. Hern is survived by his wife, Linda (nee Lupton) Hern; children, Kenneth Hern, Scott Hern and Tiffany (Michael) Chance; sisters, Iris (Dillard) Munsell and Cheryl (James) Jokerst; and his uncle, Vernon (Jane) Hern; along with grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Harry Richard Hern; and sister-in-law, Jackie Hern nee Bazzel. Mr. Hern was a member of the Your Friends In Christ Bible Study Group. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home with Pastor Dillard Munsell officiating. Mr. Hern was buried at the St. John Cemetery in Fults.

Charles William Theis, 75, of Millstadt, died Nov. 24, 2013, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. He was born July 7, 1938, in Union County, the son of the late William and Molly (nee Angell) Theis. Mr. Theis is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carolyn (nee McIntosh) Theis; daughters, Karen (Bob) Mueller and Angela Theis; his son, Charles Brian Theis; grandchildren Jason (Jamie) Mueller, Alyssa Theis, Carly Choate, Courtney, Austin and Zackary Thies, and Chelsie Lang; a great-granddaughter, Char-lotte Mueller; brothers, Howard Theis, Raymond Theis, Larry Theis and Gilbert Theis; and sisters, Emma Richardson and Marie Cupp; along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Leland McIntosh; brothers, Alvin, Carl, Ed, Norman and Otto Theis; and sisters, Elsie Davis, Wilhelmina Menees, Mary Louis and Lena Theis. Mr. Theis was employed for 25 years as a butcher at Hunter Packing. He later worked for the Millstadt Township and the Village of Millstadt. He was a longtime member of the Millstadt Union Fire Department. Charles coached all three of his children in Little League. He also volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels for the Millstadt Senior Center. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He especially liked his family’s summer gatherings around a bonfire at the lake. Visitation and funeral were at Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt with Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. At Charles’ request, he was cremated. Memorials may be made to the Millstadt Senior Center, Shriner’s Hospital For Children or the Millstadt Union Fire Department.

Mary Neva Marin, nee Granda, 91, of Columbia, died Nov. 28, 2013. She was born March 28, 1922, in Taylor Springs, the daughter of the late Joseph and Esperanza (nee Menendez) Granda. Mary married Emil "Meeshe" Marin in 1946 in Fulton, Mo. He died in in 2009. Mrs. Marin is survived by her son, David Marin of Columbia; a daughter, Vicki (Jan) Swickard of Bristol, R.I.; her brother, Julian Granda of Addieville; and nieces and nephews, Tina (Granda) Kopp, Donna (Granda) Schulte, Nephew, Keith, Joe and Jon Granda; along with her mother's family from Spain whom she visited and kept correspondence. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Blano Granda; and a nephew, Rick Granda. Mrs. Marin attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbia. She was a homemaker and also worked for many years at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. Mary was fond of sharing childhood memories of her family in Fairmont City, her parents' native country (Spain) and that she was at Times Square in New York City on V.J. Day in 1945. Visitation and funeral were at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbia with Pastor Steven Theiss officiating. Mrs. Marin was buried at Valhalla Gardens Of Memory in Belleville. Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church - Building Fund.

Deron W. Patton, 41, of Columbia, died Nov. 29, 2013, at St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Louis, Mo. He was born June 2, 1972, in Belleville, the son of the late Melvin and Candace (nee Wilson) Patton. Mr. Patton is survived by his daughter, Kaitlyn Patton of Columbia; a sister, Kim (Tedd) Bacott of Columbia; a brother, J.D. Patton of Mascoutah; grandmother, Grace (Merril) Loyet of Highland; aunts and uncles, Debbie (Louie) Janik of Columbia, Denise (Ritch) Keller of Columbia, Craig (Kim) Wilson of Greenville, Larry (Diane) Patton of Belleville and Lynn Brower of Columbia; nieces and nephews, Ryan, Caitlin, Ashley, J.T., Emma, Brittni, Kadence, Beau and Berlyn; and great-nephew and great-niece, Jayce and Ellie Mae. Visitation and funeral were at Lawlor Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Patton officiating. A cremation followed. Memorials may be made to the Deron Patton Memorial Fund.

Catherine Menke, nee Schmidt, 98, of Waterloo, died November 30, 2013 in Waterloo. She was born March 15, 1915 in Kidd, Ill, the daughter of the late William and Augusta nee Schmidt. Mrs. Menke is survived by her children, Ervin (Donna) Menke, Shirley Williams, Orville (Beverly) Menke, Robert (Mildred) Menke and Larry (Reba) Menke; daughter-in-law, Shirley Menke; grandchildren, Teresa Rusteberg, Pat Killingsworth, Michelle Gummersheimer, Dawn Kelley, Mike and Tim Williams, Kathy Bujnak, Shryl Hamilton, Wayne Menke, Shelly and Nicole Menke, Susan Stratman, April Kirkley, Danny, and Millie Menke, Steve Menke and Heather Griffin; 37 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; brother, William C. (Lorene) Schmidt; sisters-in-law, Jean Menke and Maxine Schmidt; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herman P. Menke; son, Vernon Menke; son-in-law, Elmer Williams; grandchildren, Diane and Donna Menke, Brian and Bradley Menke, Tina Renee Hoggard; two great-grandchildren; brother, Elmer Schmidt. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. Mrs. Menke was buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Maydell D. Huetsch, nee Schilling, 82, of Waterloo, died Nov. 1, 2013, in Waterloo. She was born May 5, 1931, in Waterloo, the daughter of the late Martin Schilling, the late Louise (nee Einwich) Burg and the late Charles Burg (stepfather). Mrs. Huetsch is survived by her husband, John O. Huetsch; children Jay M. (Mary Ellen) Huetsch, Steven C. (Kim) Huetsch, Lynne M. (Randy) Duren and Randy L. (Julie) Huetsch; grandchildren John C. Huetsch, Mark A. Huetsch, Michael C. Huetsch, Amy E. Huetsch, Jessica N. Thompson, Meaghan L. Huetsch, Christopher J. Huetsch, Matthew K. Huetsch and Alex R. Ford; a great-grandson, Randy E. Thompson; sisters Irene H. (Vernon) Heine and Myrtle Laurent; a brother, Leroy N. Schilling; and sisters-in-law, Delores F. Guebert, Mary Ann Rensing and Helen E. Hon; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert J. Schilling; sisters-in-law Helen H. Schilling and Dorothy M. Karban; and brothers-in-law Marvin Laurent, Herbert B. Huetsch, Norman L. Huetsch, Herman J. Huetsch and Ardell A. Huetsch. Mrs. Huetsch attended SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo. Visitation is Sunday, Nov. 3, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral is Monday, Nov. 4, at 10 a.m., at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo with Father Osang Idagbo C.M. officiating. Mrs. Huetsch will be buried in the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the SPPS Education First Fund or Hospice of Southern Illinois.

William H. Schmidt Jr., 83, of Waterloo, died Nov. 6, 2013, with his family by his side at Oak Hill. He was born June 26, 1930, in Waterloo, the son of the late William Sr. and Amanda (nee Kraft) Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt is survived by his wife, Mary Kay (nee Notter) Schmidt; children, Connie (Charles) Lutz, Rhonda (John) Maurer and Wendy (Perry) Skaer; grandchildren, Christopher (Brittany) Lutz, Cara (Brian) Kettler, Caleb (Sarah) Lutz, Craig (Pam) Unger, Brian (Jessica) Unger, Melissa (Cory) Meyers, A.J. Skaer and Alec Skaer; and a sister, Ruth Matzenbacher; along with 12 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Bernard Unger; and a brother in infancy. Mr. Schmidt attended St. Paul UCC in Waterloo. He was a member of the Waterloo Rotary Club, Beaver Lake, Coon Lake and the Waterloo American Legion. Bill was a retired car salesman. He was a talented clarinet player, having played in several local bands, including the Waterloo German Band, New Hanover Deutschmeisters, Waterloo Municipal Band and Bud Light Brigade. Bill enjoyed fishing, especially with his lifelong friend Whitey Herzog. Mr. Schmidt was a standout athlete during his days at Waterloo High School. He starred on the baseball and track teams. He was voted into the inaugural class of the WHS Athletic Hall of Fame. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral was at St. Paul UCC in Waterloo with Pastor Thelma Burgonio-Watson officiating. Mr. Schmidt was buried at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or St. Paul UCC’s General Fund.
