Scott J. Janson, 46, of Columbia, died Sept. 27, 2006. He was born Nov. 18, 1959, in East St. Louis, the son of James and June Janson nee Schroeder of Columbia. He was married to Annette Janson nee Hargrave. Mr. Janson is survived by his parents; wife; children Kelsey Janson and Andrew Janson of Columbia; sister Angie (Kurt) Jehling of Columbia; Brett (Ami) Janson of East Peoria; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Janson was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was a self-employed carpenter and operated AKJ Construction. A private family service was held. He is buried at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Marie R. Steiger nee Woodside, 88, formerly of Columbia, died Sept. 27, 2006, in Las Vegas, Nev. She was born July 18, 1918, in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Walter W. and Rosie B. Woodside nee Green. She married the late Lester Steiger in 1939. Mrs. Steiger is survived by her daughter Darlene (Lawrence) Hong of Henderson, Nev.; grandchildren Kylene Hong of Madison, Wisc., and Ryan (Kate) Hong of Atlanta, Ga.; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Michael Woodside, and sisters Lillian, Margaret, Deloris and Elenore. Mrs. Steiger had been a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbia. Visitation was at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral services were at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Rev. Steven Theiss officiating. She is interred at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville. Memorials may be made to Intervarsity Christian Fellowship in Madison, Wisc.

Wayne Carl Behnken, 62, of Ames, died Sept. 28, 2006, in St. Louis. He was born Jan. 17, 1944, the son of Lena Behnken nee Sommer of Modoc and the late Carl Behnken. He was married to Sharon Behnken. Mr. Behnken is survived by his mother; wife; children Shawn (Stephanie) Behnken of Ames, Joel Behnken of Ames, Nick Behnken of Waterloo, and Christopher (Jennifer) Behnken of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; grandchildren Amanda “Mandy” Behnken and Michael Behnken of Ames; sister Wanda Dethrow of Chester; mother-in-law Melba Nicholson of Red Bud; sister-in-law Nadine (Alfred) Keckritz of Red Bud; dear friend Jason Henry of Waterloo; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father; grandparents Ferdinand and Emilie Sommer and Henry and Dorothea Behnken; godmothers Goldie Bollmeier and Lydia Behnken; and father-in-law Vernon Nicholson. Mr. Behnken was a member of S. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Red Bud. He was also a member of the Randolph County Farm Bureau and the Levee District of Prairie du Rocher. Visitation was at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home. A funeral service was at St. Peter United Church of Christ in Red Bud, Rev. William Graves officiating. He is buried at St. Marcus Cemetery in Red Bud. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association, the American Kidney Fund or St. Peter United Church of Christ in Red Bud.

Gerald A. Goudey, 74, of Columbia, died Sept. 28, 2006, in St Louis. He was born May 9, 1932, in Centralia, the son of the late Joseph and Elois Goudey nee Clouse. He married Darlene Goudey nee Thiele in 1952; she survives him. Mr. Goudey is survived by his wife; children Wayne (Janis) Goudey of Columbia, Rodney (Kili) Goudey of Columbia, Vicky Shlemmer of Columbia and Tracy (Rich) Sewell of Columbia; grandchildren Christopher Goudey, Jennifer Goudey, Monica Goudey, Abby Goudy, Ryan Fujiwara, Pvt. Jared Albrecht, Jon Albrecht, Derek Schlemmer, Dana Schlemmer, Darla Sewell and Richard Sewell. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Joseph Goudey and Leonard Goudey, sister Dorothy Oggero, father- and mother-in-law Henry and Frieda Thiele, and brother-in-law Earl Thiele. Mr. Goudey was a member of American Legion Post #581, Ducks Unlimited and VFW Post #6504. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was retired from Amex Zinc in Sauget. Visitation and funeral services were at Lawlor Funeral Home. He is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to Christ Community Church or the Humane Society of Monroe County.

Audrey O. Phelps nee Colley, 92, of Columbia, died Sept. 28, 2006, in Columbia. She was born March 24, 1914, in Southfork, Ark., the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Lillie Colley nee Richardson. She married the late Jack W. Phelps in 1936. Mrs. Phelps is survived by her children Louise (S.O.) Beren of Wichita, Kan., and Joe (Martha) Colley of Columbia; grandchildren Jeremy Colley, Elizabeth Colley, Nicholas Colley, Michael (Sarah) Radwan and Joseph (Tracey) Radwan; great-grandchildren Madelyn Radwan and Sophia Radwan; sister Lois (Louis) Lucas of Alton; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son James Phelps, along with three brothers and sisters. Mrs. Phelps was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she had been active with Ladies’ Aid and quilting. She loved sewing, arranging flowers and was a wonderful cook. Visitation and funeral services were at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Pastor Steven Theiss officiating. She is interred at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville. Memorials may be made to Garden Place Assisted Care in Millstadt.

William Snow, 76, of Columbia, died Sept. 29, 2006, in St. Louis. He was born Dec. 29, 1929, in Percell, Okla., the son of the late William and Ada Snow nee Cates. He married Mary Marie Snow nee Maxwell in 1951; she survives him. Mr. Snow is survived by his wife; children Steaven (Linda) Snow, Ronald (Sherrie) Snow, Sondra (Steve) Fields, Robert Snow, Angela (Jay) Boyd and Scott Snow; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters Vivian Roberson, Mary Chisolm and Lila May Farrenburg; and brothers Robert Glenn Snow and Joe Snow. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings. Mr. Snow was employed by Silkscreen Products as a printer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Visitation and funeral services were at Lawlor Funeral Home, Pastor Steaven Snow officiating. He is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to New Testament Baptist Church.

Elsie R. Herrmann nee Allred, 78, of Millstadt, died Sept. 20, 2006, in Millstadt. She was born October 24, 1927, in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Elsie Allred nee Langford. She was married to the late Lilburn L. Herrmann. Mrs. Herrmann is survived by her children Martin T. Herrmann of Millstadt, Madonna R. Herrmann of Millstadt, Angela Herrmann of Millstadt, Patricia (Robert) Schuetz of Odenton, Md., and Lisa (Greg) Dalzell of Plymouth, N.H.; grandchildren Joshua Voland and Elisa Voland, both of Plymouth, N.H.; cousins Elsie May Uhlemeyer of St. Louis and Mary Ellen McManus of West Point, Calif.; nieces and nephews John Allred of East Carondelet, Janene Allred of Dupo, Mike Allred of Collinsville, Michelle Allred of Belleville, Tom McGeehan of Dupo, Sharon Wier nee McGeehan of Mascoutah, Theresa Murdock nee McGeehan of New Athens, Mary Katherine Pinkerton nee McGeehan of Belleville, Charles Allred of Goreville, and Sharon Wier; sisters-in-law Maryann Allred of Collinsville and Mary Kay Gibson of Goreville; goddaughter Linda Wilson nee Chaudet, the daughter of Marie Chaudet, her best friend of more than 60 years, many great-nieces and great-nephews; and many great devoted family friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers James Edward Allred, Charles Andrew Allred and John Martin Allred; sister Joan Lucille McGeehan; and her childhood friend Jane Jenkins nee Sims. Mrs. Herrmann attended St Teresa’s Academy in East St. Louis, and completed her high school diploma at Belleville Area College. She started working at the Kroger warehouse and store in St. Louis, and later worked as a telephone operator at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in East St. Louis. She retired as a telephone operator for the Illinois Department of Public Aid in East St. Louis. This was her career after working as a housewife and raising her family on farms in both Columbia and Millstadt. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Millstadt, and a former member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. She enjoyed baseball, golf, football, basketball and hockey. She was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Tiger Woods, many of the other professional golfers in the PGA, the St. Louis Rams, the Fighting Illini and the St. Louis Blues. She enjoyed her pets: her goldfish Fishy Foo; her cat Hollergut; and her dog Daisy. She also enjoyed attending concerts, especially James Taylor and the Irish Tenors, movies, and shows at the Muny Opera, as well as traveling and celebrating occasions of all types with her family and friends. Her family and friends will be eternally grateful to Dr. Peter Weiss and all of his staff at both St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, Mo., and the Siteman Cancer Center at BJC in St. Louis, for the professional and wonderful care they provided her in the last five years of her life. Visitation was at George Renner and Sons Funeral Home in Belleville. A funeral mass was held at St. Peter’s Cathedral Catholic Church, Msgr. James Buerster officiating. She is buried at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery in Belleville. Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Hospital Life & Hope Fund, BJC Hospice, or in the form of masses.

Ruth M. Offermann nee Nobbe, 82, of Waterloo, died Aug. 1, 2006, in Waterloo. She was born Jan. 10, 1924, in Monroe County, the daughter of the late William and Frieda Nobbe nee Stemler. She was married to Theodore G. Offermann. Mrs. Offermann is survived by her husband; son Larry (Karen) Offermann of Waterloo; grandchildren Brian Offermann and Amy Offermann; brother Roy (Alice) Nobbe of Waterloo; sister Edna (Ervin) Rabbermann of Waterloo; and sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by his parents, brothers William Nobbe and Louis Nobbe, and Esther Stumpf. Mrs. Offermann was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Waterloo. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. Funeral services were at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Waterloo, Pastor Mary Beth Hartenstein officiating. She is buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the American Cancer Society.

Samantha Susan Casey Popham, 17, of Dupo, died Aug. 1, 2006, in Swansea. She was born July 23, 1989, in Belleville, the daughter of John (Juanita) Popham Sr. of Illinois and Steven Utt of Missouri. Ms. Popham is survived by her parents; siblings Shelly Brown, Michael Brown Sr., Sharon Popham and John Popham Jr. of Dupo, and James Utt and Brian Utt of St. Louis; nephews Michael Brown Jr. and Eric Brown; grandmothers Irene Casey of Dupo, and Wand Popham of Cahokia; great-grandparents John and Leona Popham of Herrin; and aunts, uncles, cousins and all those who loved her. Ms. Popham was attending Beck Vocational School and belonged to the Barbizon Modeling School. Visitation and funeral services were at Dashner Funeral Home, Rev. Dan Batchelor officiating. She is buried at Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Edward J. Polacek Jr., 44, of Waterloo, died Aug. 2, 2006, in St. Louis. He was born May 24, 1962, in Red Bud, the son of Ruth Ann Polacek nee Shields of Waterloo and the late Edward J. Polacek Sr. He was married to Teresa Polacek nee Kelley. Mr. Polacek is survived by his mother; wife; children Neal Polacek and Kaitlyn Polacek, siblings Stephen Polacek of Waterloo, Randy (Sandy) Polacek of Waterloo, Catherine (David) Schreder of Waterloo and Glen (Kim) Polacek of Waterloo; and sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father. Mr. Polacek was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Tipton. He was a carrier for the Belleville News-Democrat. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral mass was at St. Patrick’s Church in Tipton, Fr. Jose Jacob officiating. He is buried at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Tipton. Memorials may be made to the Neal and Kaitlyn Trust Fund.
