Shirley Schlemmer nee Carr, 82, of Waterloo, died Aug. 26, 2008 in Waterloo. She was born Feb. 14, 1926 in Waterloo, the daughter of the late Thomas and Dorothy (nee LaSource) Carr. Mrs. Schlemmer is survived by her children, Linda (David) Phillips of Coppell, Tex., and Perry (Lynn) Schlemmer of Waterloo; grandchildren Brett Phillips of Atlanta, Ga., Neil Schlemmer of Millstadt and Ned Schlemmer of Waterloo; a sister, Pam (Ron) Bode of Waterloo; and brothers Wallace (Lois) Carr of Waterloo; Thomas (Elaine) Carr of Plainfield, Ind., Hal Lee (Delores) Carr of Fenton, Mo. and Howard (Alberta) Carr of Champaign; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Schlemmer; and sisters Jacqueline (William) Sawchik and Geraldine Carr. Mrs. Schlemmer was a charter member of the Waterloo VFW Post 6504 Ladies Auxiliary. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home with the Waterloo Fire Department and VFW Post 6504 Ladies Auxiliary conducting walk-throughs. Funeral was at SS. Peter and Paul Church in Waterloo, Father Urban Osuj officiating. She was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Memorials may be made to the SS. Peter and Paul New School Building Fund.

Gina "Nikki” Embrich nee Herman, 45, of Waterloo, died Aug. 28, 2008, in Waterloo. She was born Oct. 6, 1962 in Belleville. She is survived by her husband, Keith Embrich; children Corey and Austen Embrich; step-daughter, Rachel (Kyle Jacob) Embrich; mother, Carol Wold; father-in-law, Leo Embrich; sister-in-law, Loretta (Bruce) Embrich-Migneron; brother-in-law, Terry Embrich; and uncle, Gene Heusohn; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by grandparents Fred and Marcella (nee Pieper) Heusohn; and mother-in-law, Colleen (nee Kabureck) Embrich. Mrs. Embrich was employed at Enterprise Bank and Trust in St. Louis, Mo., and volunteered for the American Cancer Society. Visitation and funeral were at Quernheim Funeral Home, with Pastor Matt Henson officiating. Mrs. Embrich was buried at St. John UCC Cemetery in Valmeyer. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

August "Gus" Koch, 81, of Columbia, died, Aug. 28, 2008. He was born April 11, 1927 in Burksville, the son of the late Charles and Minnie (Sickmeyer) Koch. He married Arlou (Weilbacher) Koch in 1949 in Columbia. She died on May 21, 2008. He is survived by sons Larry (Caty) Koch of Wilton, Conn., Marty (Janet) Koch of Arnold, Mo., and Kevin (Cindy) Koch of Columbia; and five grandchildren; along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by brothers Charles and Alvin Koch; and sisters Irene Lang and Bernice Beattie. Gus had been a Distributor of Shaklee Products, and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia. A memorial mass will be Saturday, Sept. 6, 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia, Fr. Steve Gira officiating. Mr. Koch gifted his body for scientific study. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception School Education Fund.

Steven Stahlmann, 48, of Columbia, died Aug. 29, 2008 at St. Louis University Hospital. He was born Sept, 19, 1959, in Red Bud, the, son of the late LeRoy and Helen (Eckert) Stahlmann. He married Joanne (Kish) Stahlmann in 1985 in Columbia. She survives him. He was a service manager with Water-Tech Irrigation Co., in St. Louis, Mo., was an avid fisherman and musician, and had a passion for cooking. Also, surviving are a sister, Sandra (Michael) Scruggs of Belleville; mother-in-law, Betty Kish of Columbia; uncles Robert Stahlmann of Lansing, Mich., Marc (Jean) Eckert of Columbia and Rich (Sue) Schmidt of Columbia; aunts Doris (Bobbie) Reece of Millstadt, Pearl Mueller and Betty Schmidt, both of Columbia; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerald Kish, Dennis (Nancy) Kish, Michael (Jeanne) Kish, Thomas Kish, Steven (Debbie) Kish, Patrick Kish, Albert, Jr. "Chip" (Patti) Kish, Mary (John) Olsson, Susan (Kenny) Settle, and Margie (James) Burns; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by father-in-law, Albert Kish, Sr.; sister-in-law, Rumay Kish; and aunt, Mary Ann Stahlmann. Visitation and funeral were at Lawlor Funeral Home. A cremation followed the services. Memorials may be made to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, Mo.

Matilda Crook, 89, of Bartonville, died Aug. 29, 2008, at her home with her family by her side. She was born April 10, 1919 in Waterloo to Edward T. and Matilda Mary (Brueggemann) Moffitt. She married Walter L. Crook in Waterloo on Nov. 20, 1940. He preceded her in death on March 15, 1989. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Henry Moffitt. Surviving are a daughter, Linda (Richard) Phillips; and grandchildren, Desiree (Todd) Colvin and Rick Phillips. Matilda was the owner and operator of the OK Motel in Pacific, Mo., before retiring in 1975. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Bartonville and its Women's Group. Visitation was at Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel in Bartonville. Funeral was at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Visitation and funeral services were also held at Quernheim Funeral Home. She was buried at S.S. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to the building fund at her church.

Ronald Gulley, 57, of Columbia, died Aug.30, 2008. He was born Nov. 11, 1950, in East St. Louis, the son of the late Henry and Nina (Cleveland) Gulley. He was employed as an optician with Hoya Vision in Columbia, was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of Columbia American Legion Post 581. Surviving are daughter, Roxanne (Brian) Wheeler; sons Ryan Gulley and Ross (Kayla) Gulley; former wife, Renee (Riebeling) Gulley; grandchildren Jaydin Gulley and Keegan Gulley; brother, Dennis Gulley, all of Columbia; sisters Betty (Earl) Gummersheimer of East Carondelet and Patsy (Bob) Phoenix of Ava; brother, Terry (Wanda) Gulley, Moultrie, Ga.; and aunt, Bonita (Curtis) Wiechert of Dupo; along with nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation and funeral were at Lawlor Funeral Home, with Pastor Bob Goddard officiating. He was buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Family of Ron Gulley.

Pearl Schmitz nee Wienhoff, 78, of Waterloo, died Aug. 30, 2008, in Red Bud. She was born Nov. 3, 1929, in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Henry and Emma Wienhoff nee Rick. She was married to the late Clarence Schmitz. Mrs. Schmitz is survived by her children Sharon (George) Hoerr of Fults, Dennis (Brenda) Schmitz of Waterloo, William (Janet) Schmitz of Waterloo, Robert (Linda) Schmitz of Waterloo, and David (Tamera) Schmitz of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Ida Niebruegge and Lucy Fitzgerald; sister-in-law, Mildred Schmitz; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters Josephine Toenjes, Alice Belter and Alma Bernard; and brother Walter Wienhoff. Mrs. Schmitz was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Waterloo, Fr. Daniel Jurek officiating. She is buried at St. Patrick Cemetery in Tipton. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Southern Illinois or St. Patrick Cemetery.

Margaret Gummersheimer nee Hempe,74, died July 2, 2008 in St. Louis. She was the wife of the late Otto (Bill) Gummersheimer and was born in July 1934. Survivors include a daughter, Tina (Michael) Heusohn; a son, Tim (Lisa) Gummersheimer; and a sister, Rita Floarke; grandchildren, Shane, William, Ashley, Molly and Cecilia; other relatives and friends. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Kate Bollinger and a brother, Jack Hempe. A memorial mass will be celebrated July 19 at St. Justin’s Catholic Church, Crestwood, Mo. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Mercy Hospice.

Elsie Helfrich nee Janson, 96, of Columbia, formerly of Millstadt, died July 4, 2008, at Canterbury Manor Nursing Home in Waterloo. She was born April 15, 1912, the daughter of the late John and Bernadine (Weilbacher) Janson. She married Arthur Helfrich in 1946. He died in 2004. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Joseph Matlock; brothers Clarence Janson, John Janson, Andrian Janson, Lawrence Janson and Oliver Janson in infancy; and a sister, Hilda Heck. She is survived by her children, Elaine Matlock of Columbia, Eilene Helfrich of Phoenix, Ariz., Arlou (Doug) Bartlett of Anchorage, Alaska, and Bernita (Gary) Maurer of Waterloo; a brother, Br. Herbert Janson S.M. of San Antonio, Tex.; sister-in-law, Clara Janson; grandchildren Mark (Leslie) Matlock, Chris and Sarah Matlock, Jim Danielle and John Bartlett, Jamie (Joe) Kulessa, and Jason and Joshua Maurer; and great-grandson, Joseph James Matlock; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Paderborn, St. Ann Sodality and the Floraville Homemakers Visitation and funeral service was at Creason Funeral Home in Millstadt. Funeral was at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Paderborn with Father Carl Scherrer officiating. She was buried at the church’s cemetery. Memor-ials may be made to St. Michael’s Building Fund or Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Charles Robert Shackel-ford, 75, of Waterloo, died July 4, 2008, at Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Oct. 2, 1932 in St. Louis, Mo., the son of the late Clyde Marcus Shackelford and Eloise Smith. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Crandall; sons Robert Shackelford of Camdenton, Mo., Eugene (Carol) Shackelford of Stanton, Mo., James Shackelford of St. Louis, Mo., Gary (Michel) Shackelford of Ohio and Michael Shackelford of Granite City; stepchildren David White, Richard (Theresa) White and Robert White, all of Kimberling, Mo.; sister, Norma Mercer of Detroit, Mich.; and 11 grandchildren. Mr. Shackelford was preceded in death by his parents; a step-father; sister, Carol Davidson; and brother-in-law, Clyde Mercer. He was a member of AARP and St. Paul UCC in Waterloo. Visitation and funeral were at DeFabio Funeral Home in Waterloo with Pastor Mary Beth Hartenstein officiating. He was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. Memorials may be made to the family.
