Verne Davis
Herrick
63 years old, Verne "Tom" Davis of Herrick died at 9:57 p.m. Thursday (July, 5 2001) at St. Anthony's Medical Center, Effingham. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 7 at 11 a.m. at Herrick Baptist Church, Herrick with Allen Ebbler, officiating. Visitation will be 5 until 8 p.m., Friday, July 6 at Herrick Baptist Church. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery, Bowling Green Township, Fayette County Illinois.
Verne "Tom" Davis was born Friday, March 11, 1938, in Bowling Green Township Fayette County, the child of George D. and Devona Marie (nee Emmons) Davis. He served 20 years in the United States Army attaining the rank of Warrant Officer. He retired from the Army in 1975. He married Barbara Joan Redman on Saturday May 13, 1972 in the Grace United Methodist Church, Decatur, IL. He was a graduate of the University of Omaha and the Southern Seminary of Louisville, Ky. where he earned a Masters of Divinity in 1981.
He was a member of the Herrick American Legion Post, Herrick Community Association and a past Board Member of the Herrick Village Board. He was the founder of the Gospel and Country Music Night at the Herrick Community Center. Tom has been in the service of the Lord until his death as an evangelist at many churches in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. A well known guitarist and soloist in the Herrick area, he offered his talents to many religious and civic events. Tom was interim Pastor of the Herrick Baptist Church since his appointment in December 2000.
He leaves his loving wife Joan "Toodles" Davis. Tom Davis was Father to Patty Beeson of Newburgh, Ind., David Taniges of Owaneco, IL. Grandpa to Jason Beeson and Jeremy Beeson of Pana. Stacy Vail of Oconee and Erik Taniges of Shelbyville, Ky., Great Grandpa to Jordan, Tara, Brock, Jared, and Jacob Beeson all at home in Pana and Dalton Vail at home in Oconee, and Brianna Taniges at home in Shelbyville, Ky. He is also survived by his very dear and special friend Jack Wise of Owaneco IL, one brother George Davis of Taylorville, IL., and three sisters, Lela Williamson and Mary Jane Woodard of Taylorville. Gloria Romine of Maricopa, Ariz. A half-brother, Jerry and three half-sisters, Bonnie Mary Lou, and Sara. Many nieces and nephews.

Lillian Griffin
Shelbyville
Lillian L. Griffin, 83, of Shelbyville, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday (July 8, 2001) in St. Vincent's Memorial Hospital in Taylorville.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday July 10, in the Lockart and Sons Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time on Tuesday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery
Mrs. Griffin was born Aug. 24, 1917 in Shelby, Co., the daughter of Lawrence and Edith Crook Foor. She married Wendell Griffin in 1938. He died in 1970.
Surviving are daughter, Virginia Davis and husband Jack of Cantrall, IL; grandchildren, Jill Nessler and husband Fred, Heather Schenck and husband Charles, Jack Davis, Rachel and Georgia Griffin; six great grandchildren; one sister, Helma Koslofski of Decatur; brothers, Ervin Foor of Decatur, Jess Foor of Paris, IL; sister-in-law, Betty Martin and husband Don of Tower Hill; special friend Clem Farrier of Shelbyville; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wendell L. Griffin, parents, son Jim Griffin in 1998 two sisters, Delilah Tynan and Lenore Shuff and one brother Rudy Foor.
She was a prominent business women in the Shelbyville and Mattoon areas. She owned and operated Griffin's Restaurant in Shelbyville and the Airport Steakhouse and Farmer's Store both in Mattoon. She was a member of Royal Neighbors.

Hilda Plowman
Lakewood
Hilda Plowman, 97, of Lakewood died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday (July 8, 2001) in the Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. Arrangements are incomplete at Lockart & Sons Funeral Home Shelbyville.

William Thompson
Decatur
William Wesley Thompson, 68, of Decatur died Saturday (July 7, 2001) in his home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery with full military rites provided by the Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church or DMH Hospice
Mr. Thompson was born in Shelbyville Jan. 8, 1933, the son of Henry Allen Loydd Thompson and Mary Elizabeth Askmis Thompson. William married Shirley Gordon on Feb. 26, 1956. They divorced, and he then married Genevia Aim Read. After she passed away, he remarried Shirley Gordon Bess on Dec. 18, 1987.
Surviving are his wife; son; Daniel Thompson and wife Angela of Bethany; daughter, Brenda Sudduth and husband James of Lakewood; nine step-children, Anna Fern Williams and husband Reggie of Tower Hill, Sue Davies and husband Gary of Clay Center, Kan., Rick Read and wife Ronda of Sullivan, Richard Tucker and wife Debbie, Thomas Tucker and wife Michele, Katherine Hughes and husband Carl, Brenda Johnson and husband Roger, Tammy Bradshaw and husband Marty, and Valerie Shields and Jim, all of Decatur; 34 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, LaVance Drake of Decatur.
He was preceded in death by a son; his parents; two brothers; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two step-children.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean war. He retired from Caterpillar after 33 years of service. One his favorite hobbies was pitching horseshoes. He will be sadly missed by all.

Hilda Plowman
Lakewood
Hilda M. Plowman, 97, of Lakewood died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday (July 8, 2001) in the Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday July 11, in the Lockart and Sons Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Memorials can be made to Donor's Choice.
Mrs. Plowman was born Aug. 23, 1903 in Lakewood, the daughter of Edward and Grace Roberts Specht. She married Kenneth B. "Stub" Plowman Dec. 10, 1921. He passed away May 19, 1993.
Surviving are daughters, Marjorie Kessel and husband Burl of Lakewood, Wilma Goleman and husband Lowell of Shelbyville, Joyce Lawrence and husband George of Rochester, Mass., Gwenda Cutler and husband Leon of Altamont, IL; son Kenny Plowman and wife Sherreye of Chilhowie, VA; twenty-five grandchildren; thirty-nine great-grandchildren; and fifteen great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her parents; a daughter Barbara Bullock; granddaughter, Suzanne Havey; brother, Lyle Specht and a sister Doris Kirk.
She was a homemaker, a member of Shelby County Home Extension and the Lakewood United Methodist Church.

Ina Hinton
Herrick
Ina Mae Hinton, 78, Herrick, died Tuesday (July 10, 2001) at Shelby Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Mound Cemetery, Cowden. No visitation. Arrangements are by Wallace & Carroll Funeral Home, Herrick. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Cowden.
Mrs. Hinton was born Nov. 21, 1922 in Cowden. She married Wednesday Howard Hinton in Missouri Nov. 21, 1940. He died Oct. 12, 1992.
Surviving are son, John R. Hinton of Herrick; brother, Charles Miller of Decatur; sister Erma Jenkins of South Roxana; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded by parents; husband, Howard; one daughter; two brothers; and two sisters.
She was a waitress for many years at Herrick Cafe and worked at Herrick Peace Meal as a driver. She was a member Herrick Christian Church and Ladies Auxiliary American Legion of Herrick.

Donald Grobengieser
Shelbyville
Donald Grobengieser, 75, of Shelbyville, formerly of Altamont, died 1:30 p.m. Tuesday (July 10, 2001) in his daughter's home in Shelbyville.
Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Union Cemetery, Altamont, with military rites and the Rev. Ty Stoneburner officiating. Kull Funeral Chapel, Altamont, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials can be made to donor's choice.
Mr. Grobengieser was born Nov. 27, 1925, in Peoria, the son of George Charles and Hilda Lezete Goers Grobengieser. He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church and a charter member of VFW Post 7676, both of Altamont. He married Margaret Emily Gilkerson. She preceded him in death March 12, 1998.
Surviving are his daughters, Linda Frederick and husband Michael of Shelbyville; Jo Ann Smith and husband Ruel of Moweaqua; Sara Foss and husband Joseph of Altamont; Ellen Heselton and husband Darrell of Shelbyville; brother, Gordon Grobengieser and wife Sandra of Vandalia; sisters, Gladys Zacha of Altamont; Bessie Benson and husband Glen of Tuscola; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Louis "Bud" Zacha.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Rhineland and Central Europe battles and campaigns with Company K of the 255th Infantry Regiment of the 63rd Division. While serving in France, Pfc. Grobengieser was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. While living in Altamont, he was a member of Altamont Volunteer Fire Department, serving as fire chief for 13 years. He was employed by R&H Plumbing and Heating as a master plumber and by the Frederking Construction Co. as a carpenter and plumber. He also worked for Kull Funeral Home and Furniture as well as A&H Implement Co. before his retirement. After his retirement, he moved to Shelbyville to live with his daughter and to be near his grandchildren.

Glenn Koss
Cowden
Glenn C. "Jimmy" Koss 95, of Cowden died at 1:50 a.m. Thursday (July 12, 2001) in the Shelby Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Lockart & Sons Funeral Home in Cowden with the Rev. Marvin Chalfant officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial is in Mound Cemetery in Cowden. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.
He was born May 15, 1906 in Champaign County, the son of Fred and Anna Myers Koss. He married Thelma Etheridge Aug. 22, 1933 in Shelbyville. She preceded him in death Aug. 7, 1997.
Surviving is one sister Eldo "Dode" Banning of Cowden and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother Elmer Koss and one sister Opal Christy.
He was a retired farmer and an avid horseshoe player. He was affiliated with the Lutheran Church.

Chester Mundy
Pana
Chester Calvin Mundy, 74, Pana, died at 11:10 p.m. in Heritage Manor, Pana.
Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time at McCracken-Dean Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Committal service Saturday at 2 p.m. in Kane Cemetery Kane, IL. Memorials can be made to donor's choice.
Mr. Mundy was born April 11, 1927 in Kane Township, Green County, IL., the son of John T. and Grace Singleton Mundy, deceased.
Surviving are children, Rodney Mundy and wife Connie of Pana, Chester Allen Mundy and wife Vickie, Gaffney of South Carolina, Gloria Palmer and husband Phil of Pana, and Renee Mundy of Pana; sisters, Virginia Grizzle of Jerseyville and Martha Carter of Carlinville; grandchildren, James Mundy, Evan Kyle Mundy, Stacey Battles, Sammy Baldock, Melissa Jophlin, Sean Strohl, Matthew Strohl, Robert Strohl, and Tyran Strohl; step-children, Michael, Shannon, Dana, and Nathan; four great grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by twin brother, Lester Mundy and brother, Benton Munday.
He retired from Prairie Farms where he was a milk hauler, working for them for over 30 years. He came to Pana in 1963 from Carlinville. Prior to that, he lived in Carrollton.
