Mary W. (Miller) Helmuth, 68, of Arthur, IL, entered into rest at 1:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 02, 2000 at her residence surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2000 at the family residence, RR 1 Box 169-B, Arthur, IL. Bishop Marion Miller will officiate.

Burial will be in the Otto Cemetery in rural Arthur, IL. Visitation will be anytime prior to the services at the family residence. Edwards Funeral Home 221 E. Main St., Arcola, IL is in charge of arrangements.

Mary was born April 22, 1932 in Arthur, IL, a daughter of William G. and Katie Ann (Beachy) Miller.

She married Albert D. Helmuth March 5, 1953 in Arthur, IL.

She is survived by her husband, Albert D. Helmuth of Arthur, IL; 7 sons, Ernest Ray Helmuth and wife Katie of Newaygo, MI, Mervin Helmuth and his wife Barbara Ellen of Arthur, IL, Stanley Helmuth and his wife Dorothy Fern of Arthur, IL, Glen Helmuth and his wife Rosanna of Belvidere, TN, Larry Helmuth and his wife Delores Ann of Arthur, IL, Willard Helmuth and his wife Dorothy of Arthur, IL, and David William Helmuth and his wife Esther Marie of Arcola, IL; 1 daughter, Betty Lou Helmuth of Arthur, IL; 32 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 4 brothers, Reuben Miller and his wife Fannie of Sullivan, IL, Jacob Miller and his wife Katie Ann of Arthur, IL, Harley Miller and his wife Martha Ann of Arthur, IL, and Elva Miller and his wife Edith of Pentwarter, MI; 1 sister, Lizzie Ann Herschberger and her husband Levi J.D. of Arthur, IL; 1 brother-in-law, Jacob D. Chupp of Arthur, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 grandsons, Robert Helmuth and a stillborn baby boy; 1 sister Alta Chupp.

Mary was a homemaker and was a member of the Old Order Amish Faith.

Edith Hite

PHILO - Edith Ann Hite, 29, of Philo died at 11:50 p.m. Monday (May 1, 2000) at Provena Covenant Medical Center.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Freese Funeral Home in Tolono with the Rev. John Shephard officiating. Burial will be in Locust Grove Cemetery in Philo. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

She was born Dec. 2, 1970, in Champaign, the daughter of Fred and Myra Campbell Hite.

Surviving are one son, Dustin Sears of Philo; one daughter, Autumn Sears of Philo; her parents of Philo; fiance, Mark Lee of Oakwood; two brothers, Raymond Hite of Fulton, Mo., and Eugene Hite of Springfield; two sisters, Cynthia Paeth of Pesotum and Michelle Lynn Outlaw of Urbana; maternal grandparents, Richard and Gloria Sampson of Oakland; and paternal grandmother, Edna Hite of Mattoon.

She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandfathers.

Ms. Hite attended Unity High School, received her CNA degree at Parkland College and worked at the Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Darold Key

CHARLESTON - Ollie Darold Key, 81, of Charleston died at 6:15 p.m. Monday (May 1, 2000) at his residence in rural Charleston.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Shrader Funeral Home in Arcola with the Rev. John Danford officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery in Charleston. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

He was born June 9, 1918, in Gamaliel, Ky., a son of Ollie and Ethel Shaw Key.

He married Vera Doty. She died in 1986.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Wayne (LaVoice) Swisher of Humboldt and Treasa Story of Charleston; one stepdaughter, Dale Lee Drumm of Arcola; one stepson, Sam Doty of Calif.; two sisters, Izel Hale of Gamaliel, Ky., and Lena Brandon of Mahomet; five grandchildren; one step-grandchild; four great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother.

Mr. Key was a retired carpenter and member of the First Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

LaVera Adams

LaVera Nada Adams, age 80, of Mattoon, passed away at 6:45 a.m. on Monday, May 1, 2000 at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Ronald Dickinson officiating. Burial will be in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. No visitation is planned.

LaVera was born in Chaplain, Saskatchewan, Canada on July 7, 1919, a daughter of Allen Prentiss and Altia Missouri Tate Owens.

Survivors include one son, Stephen M. Watson of Champaign; three daughters, Linda Broussard and husband Jerry of Houston, Texas, Sandra Purdy and husband Fred of Olney, and Susan McDevitt and husband Scott of Mattoon; seven grandchildren, Jerry S. Broussard II of Houston, Texas, Robert P. Broussard and wife Angela of Austin, Texas, Karen E. Craig and husband Jim of Houston, Texas, Scot E. Purdy of Olney, Kristine L. Rietz and husband Todd of Lawrenceville, Shane M. Louthan and wife Jamie of Mattoon, and Dustin R. Louthan of Mattoon; ten great-grandchildren, Brandi, Rachel, Michelle, Stephanie, Trey, Cole, Kameron, Tyson, Dylan, and Sherrie; and one great-great-granddaughter, Lexie.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lorri Watson, four brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Adams was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She liked spending time with family and friends and crocheting. She will be sadly missed.

Florence Allen

A memorial service for Florence Allen will be held on Sat., May 6, at 11:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 10 Charleston Ave., Mattoon.

Officiating will be Sr. Pastor, Dr. John P. Besore and Rev. Jan Kennedy, Assoc. Pastor.

A luncheon and time of fellowship will immediately follow the service.

Mrs. Allen, 91, died Fri., March 3, at Care Center of Champaign after a long illness. She was a longtime resident of Mattoon, in recent years residing at Mattoon Health Care Center.

She was born Dec. 24, 1908 at McAlester, OK.

She married Dr. S.H. "Doc" Allen May 9, 1930 in Tulsa, Okla. He died in 1978.

Surviving are her daughter Koralie and husband, Andy Hunt of Champaign. Her sister, Frances Adams lived in Vero Beach, FL.

Mrs. Allen is also survived by three grandchildren and their families: Tom Taylor; Shirley and son, Jackson; of Sausalito, CA, Kurt Taylor, Barbara, son Larry and daughter Hannah of Englewood, FL; and Jackie and husband Mike Styles of Houston TX.

Mrs. Allen was a homemaker. She was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday School, was active in Rebekah Circle and served as an elder.

She enjoyed nature, gardening and music. She liked cooking and baking, especially cookies.

Audrey Alvis

Audrey Alvis, age 88, of Mattoon, passed away at 11:09 a.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2000, at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

The funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Henry Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Audrey was born in Jefferson County on September 5, 1911, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Martha Haney Littrell.

She married Billie Alvis on May 31, 1930 in Salem. They raised ten children. Billie preceded her in death on June 12, 1986.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Charles Robert Alvis and Kenneth Richard Alvis, and one granddaughter, Rose Martin.

Survivors include seven sons, James Ronald Alvis and wife Diana of Deer Creek, Billie Joe Alvis and friend Jean of Camache, Iowa, David Lee Alvis and friend Mary of Mattoon, Jerry Wayne Alvis and wife Linda of rural Charleston, Donald Loyd Alvis and wife Johnadine of Mattoon, Gary Edward Alvis of Ocala, Florida, Darrel Gene "Butch" Alvis and wife Carla of Allenville; one daughter, Sally Ann Wilcoxon and friend Bill of Allenville; twenty-seven grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Alvis retired from Montgomery Ward in 1974. Audrey was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

John Gayle Barbee

WESTFIELD - John Gayle Barbee, 81, of Westfield, died at 10:26 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the United Methodist Church, Westfield, with the Rev. Joe Grozik officiating. Burial with graveside military rites by Westfield American Legion Post 609 and Casey VFW Post 5762 will be in Richwoods Cemetery, Westfield. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Markwell Chapel, Westfield, Illinois.

He was born July 3, 1918, in Westfield, Illinois, the son of John Edward "J.E." and Rachel M. Daughhetee Barbee.

He married Maxine Fern Golladay April 23, 1946, in Charleston.

Surviving are his wife, Maxine Barbee of Westfield; one daughter, Roberta Ann Ring and husband Larry of Streamwood; three grandsons, Jon, Dan and Jeremy Ring; one granddaughter, Amanda Ring; one great-grandson, Zachary Ring; three great-granddaughters, Serena, Jeanna, and Morgan Ring; one sister, Gladys Robinson of Westfield; four foster children, Carolyn Barker of Henderson, N.C., Marsha Poole of Boultz, Fla., Ronnie Moore of Charleston, and Helen Williams of Gridley, Calif.; and several foster grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, three sisters, Grace Fitzgerald, Goldie Staley and Jean Barbee, and one brother, Glen Barbee.

Mr. Barbee was a farmer, a member of Westfield United Methodist Church, Casey VFW, Disabled Veterans, and Westfield American Legion. He was also a Voiture 594 U.S. Army 37th Division veteran of WW II, a member of the Illinois Farm Bureau and International Showman's Association.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association.

Viola Freeman

TOLEDO, OHIO - Viola M. Freeman, 90, of Toledo, Ohio, formerly of Mattoon, died Thursday (April 27, 2000).

A private funeral will be held. There will be no visitation. The W. K. Sujkowski and Son Funeral Home, Toledo, Ohio, is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born Aug. 9, 1909, in Holton, Mich., the daughter of Frederick and Nettie Peek.

Surviving are her children, Ellen Clark, Fred Gilbert, and Lottie Gilbert; 19 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Willard Freeman and Ted Gilbert, five children, three grandchildren, and one brother.

Mrs. Freeman had worked for Maxine Furniture and Home Furniture.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio Hospice.

J. Harold Jones

SULLIVAN - J. Harold Jones, 85, died at 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2000, in the Eastview Terrace, Sullivan.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Christian Fellowship Church of God, Sullivan. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the McMullin-Young Funeral Home, Sullivan. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery, Sullivan. Memorials: Christian Fellowship Church of God; or the Alzheimer's Association.

Mr. Jones was born on August 24, 1914 in Clay County, the son of Omer and Cena Cruse Jones.

Mr. Jones was a retired school teacher in the Sullivan School System after 29 years. He was the assistant superintendent of schools in Moultrie County from 1973-1975. A member of the Christian Fellowship Church of God, Moultrie County Board, Board of Directors CEFS 1980-1986 and Chairman of the Board of Directors 1984-1986, Governor's Task Force on Education 1964-1965, Illinois Teacher of the Year - 1964, Corp. Board of ECIAAA 1984-1990.

He married Lila May Henderson on December 24, 1936 in Effingham, and she survives.

Also surviving are a son, Marvin H. Jones of Cleveland, Ohio; daughters, Nancy Davis and husband Stephen of West Lafayette, Ind.; Kathy Kelly and husband Chuck of Chatham; sister, Helen Woods of Lake Placid, Florida; and 6 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
