Hazel Barnett

OLNEY - Hazel Louise Barnett, 74, of Olney, died at 6:20 p.m. Monday (Oct. 9, 2000) at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the Ingram Funeral Home, West Salem.

She was born Jan. 15, 1926, the daughter of Casey and Inez Mae Wynn Barnett.

Surviving are her mother, Inez Barnett of West Salem; one son, Ron Knakmuhs of Evansville, Ind.; four daughters, Jean Rinefort of Charleston, Camille Gaddy of Olney, Peggy Johnson of Washington, Ind., and Iva Richards of Albion; six brothers, Howard, Lloyd, Jim and George, all of Albion, Glenn of Spencer, Ind., and Neal of Mt. Erie; three sisters, Mary Schwartzlosc of Parkersburg, Elinor Bunnage of Mt. Erie and Mae Brandt of West Union; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and two brothers.

Carol A. Gowin

MATTOON - Carol A. Gowin, age 55, of Mattoon, passed away 8:35 p.m. Monday, October 9, 2000 at her residence.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 12, 2000 at the Immaculate Conception Parish Center, with Father Herman Niebrugge officiating.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 11, 2000 at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with Biblical Wake Service at 7:30 p.m.

Carol A. Gowin was born April 21, 1945 at Willow Hill, Illinois, a daughter of Floyd and Dorothy Piper Price.

She married Dean Gowin May 9, 1964 at Ste. Marie, Illinois, he survives.

Also surviving are her mother, Dorothy (Price) Ferguson of Effingham, two sons, Jason Gowin and his wife Theresa of Mattoon and Ryan Gowin and his fiance Andrea also of Mattoon. Three grandchildren, Alex, Ashley and Bailey Gowin also survive.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Mrs. Gowin was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and the National Restaurant Association. She was co-owner of Cody's Road House, Gowin's Restaurant and Catering, both of Mattoon, and Stix Food and Spirits in Charleston.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lincolnland Hospice.

Irma Knupp

TOLEDO - Irma Mae Knupp, 71, of Toledo, died at 4 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2000) at the Heartland Christian Village, Neoga.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Barkley Funeral Home, Toledo.

Burial will be in the Toledo Cemetery.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She was born Oct. 11, 1928, in Granite City, the daughter of Jess and Beulah Smail Reynolds.

She married Virgil Knupp in 1949; he survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Gail Randol of Sullivan; five brothers, Morris, Daniel and Ronnie Reynolds, all of Decatur, William Reynolds of Macomb and Barry Reynolds of Farmer City; three sisters, Helen Paul of Weldon, Mary Smith of Mountain View, Ark., and Anna Bronovic of Mt. Zion; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one daughter.

Mrs. Knupp was a retired postal clerk at the Toledo Post Office and was a member of the Toledo United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to the Heartland Christian Village.

Dr. Raymond L. Koch, Ph.D.

CHARLESTON, IL - Dr. Raymond L. Koch, Ph.D., age 66, of Charleston, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2000 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Memorial services celebrating his life will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 13 at the Bible Center Church, 2605 University Drive, Charleston, Illinois with Pastor John Best officiating.

A visitation for immediate family will precede graveside services at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston.

Ray was born June 26, 1934, in Mankato, Minnesota, the son of Helmuth and Nora (Williams) Koch.

He married Janet Y. Cole on June 6, 1959, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

She survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Robin Noriega and her husband Marshall of Riverside, California; one son, Rian Koch of Redlands, California; three grandchildren, Heather Noriega, Cody Noriega and Kendra Noriega, all of Riverside, California, and two sisters, Marilyn Lender of Easton, Minnesota and Linda Gilbertson and her husband Robert of Rockford, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ray was a member of the Organization of American Historians, American Historical Association, E.I.U. Panther Club and served as Advisor to Eastern's Historical Fraternity, Phi Alpha Theta. He retired from Eastern Illinois University in 1995, after having served for twenty-nine years as a Professor in the History Department. History will remember him as a Professor who was respected by his students and peers and who cared deeply about those whom he taught.

Ray received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Northwestern in Minneapolis and his Masters and Doctorate from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He enjoyed sports, with baseball being his favorite.

Memorials in honor of Ray may be made to the Bible Center Church in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, Illinois 61920.

George Schumacher
SHELBYVILLE - George C. Schumacher, 90, of Shelbyville, died at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Hospital, Decatur.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, with Dr. Bruce Owens officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville.

He was born Aug. 15, 1910, in Altamont, the son of Charles George and Emma Matilda Ehlers Schumacher.

He married Gretchen L. Duncan in 1940; she survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Barbara Schumacher of Quincy and Jane Lively of Bretwood, Tenn., and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Edna Marie Ballard. Mr. Schumacher was a teacher in Fayette County, helped form the Schumacher & Ballard Dairy in Altamont, farmed in the Shelbyville area, and co-hosted Home Extension Tours and Rural Route Tours with his wife.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, United Methodist Men and Shelbyville Lions Club, and a former member of the Effingham County Fair Board and Altamont School Board.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville or Shelby Memorial Hospital Building Fund.

Kenneth Williamson

SHELBYVILLE - Kenneth H. Williamson, 83, of Shelbyville, died at 6:29 a.m. Tuesday in Shelby Memorial Hospital, Shelbyville.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, with Rev. John Schmeling officiating.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville.

He was born Jan. 29, 1917, in Windsor Township, the son of Charles and Mabel Chase Williamson.

He married Helen M. Dagen in 1939; she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Gary Williamson of Ashmore and Rodney Williamson of Neoga; one sister, Beulah Donnel of Decatur; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Mr. Williamson operated the Williamson Garage in Findlay for several years and also farmed.

He held pilot, aircraft and engine mechanics licenses, and was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

Memorials may be made to the Peace Meal Program c/o Shelby County Senior Citizens Center, 319 N. Cedar, Shelbyville, IL 62565.

Mary Cook

YALE - Mary Esther Elizabeth Cook, 86, of Yale, died at 5:22 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 8, 2000) at her residence.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Barkley Funeral Home in Greenup.

Burial will be in Hunt Cemetery, Crooked Creek Township, Jasper County.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

She was born June 8, 1914, in Rose Hill, the daughter of Thomas and Catherine Whitsel Kibler.

She married Joe Cook in 1931; he died in 1986.

Surviving are one son, Earl Cook of Des Moines, Iowa; two daughters, Karen Wadle of Milo, Iowa, and Linda Blake of Yale; one sister, Chlorine Brackett of Newton; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Cook was retired from E.R. Moore and was a member of the Cummins United Methodist Church.

Merrell Davis

MATTOON - Merrell T. Davis, 89, of Mattoon, died at 9:45 p.m. Friday (Oct. 6, 2000) at Mattoon Health Care Center.

The funeral was 2 p.m. Monday at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald G. Dickinson officiating.

Burial was in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Visitation was one hour before the service at the funeral home.

He was born Jan. 7, 1911, near Oakland, the son of Jesse and Faye Davis.

He married Amanda E. Weber in 1940; she died in 1994.

Surviving are one son, Maurice W. Davis of Mattoon; two brothers, Max Gwinn Davis of Lebanon, Tenn., and Verlan Davis of North Glen, Colo.; one sister, Irene Jiles of Oakland; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and special friend, Kathy Hartley of Charleston.

He was also preceded in death by one sister.

Mr. Davis was retired from General Electric.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Lincolnland Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Ruth Newlin

WHEELER - Ruth H. Newlin, 69, of Wheeler, died at 7:25 a.m. Monday (Oct. 9, 2000) at her residence.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Wright Funeral Home, Dieterich, with Carroll Ross officiating.

Burial will be in Scott Cemetery, rural Dieterich.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

She was born Sept. 19, 1931, in Clarksville, the daughter of Herman and Clara Hutchings Hinkle.

She married Ezra D. Newlin in 1951; he survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Wayne Newlin of Oconee, Steven Newlin of Oakland and Bruce Newlin of Effingham; eight daughters, Naomi Rohlfing of Franklin, N.C., Phyllis Rohlfing of Effingham, Susan Newlin of Wheeler, Dianna Keefer of St. Louis, Rachel Kreke of Dieterich, Beth Upton of Lerna, Lora Cunnea of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Clara Koester of Effingham; six brothers, Rex Hinkle of Rossville, Dean of Charleston, George of Rossville, Nolan of Indianapolis, Don of Catlin and Kenneth of Collinsville; two sisters, Lorene King of Rockhill, S.C., and Rosalie Huddleston of Joliet; 22 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister.

Mrs. Newlin was a member of the Winterrowd Christian Church.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Geraldine Paul

CHARLESTON - Geraldine E. Paul, 53, of Charleston, died at 11:29 p.m. Friday (Oct. 6, 2000) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

No service is planned.

The Caudill-King Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born Dec. 29, 1946, in Hammond, Ind., the daughter of Charles L. and Berniece Grabor Follrad.

She married David Paul in 1966; he survives.

Also surviving are one son, Justin David Paul of Taylorville; two daughters, Susan Lynn Patterson of Decatur and Erika Leslie Davis of Oakland; one brother, William Follard of Michigan City, Ind.; one sister, Bernedette Dancer of Hammond, Ind.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one grandchild.

Mrs. Paul was a homemaker.
