Max Swan

OAKLAND - C. Max Swan, 87, of Oakland, died at 2:05 p.m. Monday
(July 9, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Mattoon.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Taber Funeral Home, Oakland,
with Virgil Haynes officiating. Burial will be in Edgar Cemetery, Paris.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service on
Friday at the funeral home.

He was born Dec. 25, 1913, in rural Newman, the son of Sanford and
Dochia Bell Swan. He married Virginia Marrs in 1981; she survives.

Also surviving are one stepson, Walter Liffick of Dingman's Ferry, Pa.; two
stepdaughters, Sherry Boughn of Chesapeake, Va., and Bonnie Sue Greger
of Oakland; six step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Swan had farmed in Edgar County for more than 70 years. He was a
member of the Edgar County Farm Bureau.

Memorials may be made to the Brocton Christian Church.

Ruby Wofford

CASEY - Ruby Ray Wofford, 83, of Casey, died at 2 p.m. Tuesday (July
10, 2001) at Heartland Manor Nursing Center, Casey.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Markwell Funeral Home, Casey, with
the Rev. Steve Green officiating. Burial will be in Janesville Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

She was born March 8, 1918, in Dover, Tenn., the daughter of James and
Mamie Green Travis. She married Harold Wofford in 1935; he died in
1973.

Surviving are two sons, Nathan Wofford of Casey and Leroy Wofford of
Peoria; two daughters, Mernal Black and Pauline Davidson, both of Casey;
one half brother, J.T. Travis of Detroit; 15 grandchildren; and 22
great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three sons, one brother and three sisters.

Mrs. Wofford was a former nurses' aide in Casey nursing homes.

Memorials may be made to Heartland manor Nursing Home.

Marguerite Clark

RANCHO BERNARDO, Calif. - Martha Marguerite DeVore Clark, 88, of
Rancho Bernardo, Calif., formerly of Mattoon, died June 30, 2001, at the
home of her daughter, with whom she had been living, in Rancho
Bernardo, Calif.

The Rosary and Mass of Resurrection was held at Immaculate Heart of
Mary Catholic Church in Ramona, Calif. Burial was in Ascension Cemetery
in Lake Forest. The Bonham Bros. and Lee Mortuary were in charge of the
arrangements.

She was born Sept. 3, 1912, in Mattoon, the daughter of George and
Sophia Doepel DeVore. She married Harry D. Clark; he died in 1994.

Surviving are one son, James C. Clark of Mission Viejo, Calif.; two
daughters, Jane Clark of San Diego and Lynn Visnack of Ramona, Calif.;
and two grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons and one grandchild.

Mrs. Clark worked for Illinois Consolidated Telephone Co. in Mattoon. She
was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the
Daughters of Isabella.

Memorials may be made to the Richard A. Visnack Golf Classic in
Ramona, Calif., a memorial set up in the name of her deceased grandchild,
proceeds from which go to Ramona, Calif., high school graduating students
to help continued education costs.

Mae Deames

GLENVIEW - Mae Dona Deames, 100, of Glenview, formerly of Brocton,
died at 6:25 a.m. Sunday (July 8, 2001) at Glenview Terrace.

A graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Payne Cemetery north of
Brocton with Virgil Haynes officiating. No visitation is planned. Taber
Funeral Home, Oakland, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born March 16, 1901, in Brocton, the daughter of Eugene Paul
and Anna Eliza Estes Deames.

She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Miss Deames began teaching in 1920. She taught in Brocton, Chillicothe
and Winnetka. She was a former member of the Brocton United Methodist
Church.

MARTHA POWERS

Martha E. Powers, age 86, of Charleston, passed away at 7:45 p.m.
Sunday, July 8, 2001, at the Hilltop Convalescent Center.

Graveside services celebrating her life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at
Rest Haven Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Jim Dona officiating.
The Schilling Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Martha was born July 14, 1915, in Fargo, North Dakota, a daughter of Lee
and Ethel Smith Turner. She married Edward H. "Bud" Powers on
November 17, 1940. He passed away on June 25, 2000.

Survivors include one niece, Lynne Coker and husband Glen M. of Canton,
Mich.; two great-nephews, Kenneth Coker of Westland, Mich., and Craig
Coker of Plymouth, Mich.; one great-niece, Kristen Elliott and husband
Carlos of Canton, Mich.; one great-great niece, Daisha Elliott of Canton,
Mich.; one sister-in-law, Betty Turner of Canton, Mich.; and one cousin,
Donna Warmoth of Charleston.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Turner and one
sister, Mary Endsley.

Mrs. Powers taught elementary school in the Charleston and Lovington
areas. She then worked as a bookkeeper for thirty-five years for the Kent
Lumber Company. After retiring, Martha and her husband Bud owned and
operated the Redstone Kennel in rural Charleston for many years.

Memorials may be made to a charity of donor's choice.

Robert White

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Robert Finis White, 79, of St. Petersburg, Fla.,
formerly of the Mattoon and Charleston area, died Tuesday (July 3, 2001)
at Woodside Hospice House.

The National Cremation Society of Clearwater, Fla., was in charge of the
arrangements.

He was born in Moulton, Ala.

Surviving are two sons, Stephen of Austin, Texas, and Christopher of
Pinellas Park, Fla.; three stepdaughters, Kathleen of Severna Park, Md.,
Jennifer of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Josephine of San Jose, Calif.; one
brother, Frank of Orlando, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Mr. White was an instructor of English at Emory and Cornell University,
and a professor for 24 years at Eastern Illinois University, where he was
also chair of the English Department.

LOIS BARKER

Lois M. Barker, age 83, of Mattoon, Illinois, went to be with her Lord at
9:36 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2001 at her home.

Funeral services celebrating her life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday
at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Henry Graham officiating.
Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery at Cooks Mills. Visitation
will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Lois was born April 23, 1918 in Cooks Mills, a daughter of Lossie and
Margaret Williams Janes.

Survivors include a son, Charles Armantrout of Mattoon; three grandsons,
Michael Brabec of Urbana, Jeffery Armantrout of O'Fallon and Mark
Armantrout of Chicago; one stepson, David Barker of Springfield; two
stepdaughters, Janice Lang of Reserve, New Mexico and Joanna Kolff Van
Oosterwyk of Princeton, Texas; three sisters, Cora Dodd and Wilma
Newlin, both of Mattoon and Frances White of Kansas; several step
grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and
many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two husbands,
Dr. Lowell Newlin and Lewis Barker.

Lois was a member of the Mt. Zion General Baptist Church, northwest of
Mattoon. She was a homemaker and worked in Dr. Newlin's office.

It was her request that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to a
charity of the donor's choice.

May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be in everyone's life. God Bless All.

Earl Brannin

ATWOOD - Earl L. Brannin, 66, of Atwood died at 5:21 p.m. Saturday
(July 7, 2001), at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hilligoss Shrader
Funeral Home, Atwood, with the Rev. Mitch Flesch officiating. Burial will
be in the Arthur Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at
the funeral home.

He was born March 2, 1935, in Danville, the son of Floyd and Mildred
Smith Brannin. He married Christine Hogue in 1956; she survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Randy Lee Brannin of Shreveport, La.,
and Ronney Wayne Brannin of Humboldt; two daughters, Cathy Dallyn
Bragg of Arcola and Patricia Ann Brannin of Decatur; eight grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Brannin was a former trucking company dock worker in Chicago and a
park superintendent for the City of Arthur.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Jack Bruner

MATTOON - Jack L. Bruner, 78, of Mattoon died at 7:45 a.m.
Wednesday (July 6, 2001), at Mattoon Health Care Center.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception
Church with the Rev. Herman Niebrugge officiating. Burial will be in
Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the
Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home in Mattoon.

He was born Jan. 17, 1923, in Mattoon, the son of George and Mary Foley
Bruner. He married Wanda L. Taylor in 1942; she died in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, Michael J. Bruner of Bonita Springs, Fla., and
John D. Bruner of Shiloh; one sister, Sister Regina Marie Bruner of St.
Catherine's, Ky.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and special
friend Marsha Jennings of Mattoon.

He was also preceded in death by one brother.

Mr. Bruner was a conductor with the Illinois Central Railroad from 1942
until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the Immaculate
Conception church and served in World War II.

Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church in
Mattoon.

L. E. "Gene" Chaplin

ROCKVILLE, Ind. - L. E. "Gene" Chaplin, 84, of Rockville, Ind., formerly
of Mattoon, died Friday (July 6, 2001), in West Central Community
Hospital at Clinton, Ind.

A graveside service will be held at11 a.m. today, in the Dodge Grove
Cemetery in Mattoon. The Gooch Funeral Home, Rockville, Ind., is in
charge of the arrangements.

He was born Aug. 10, 1916, in Mattoon, the son of Charles and Harriet
Allen Chaplin.

Survivors include two sons, Gene Chaplin of Rochelle and Jack Chaplin of
Los Angeles, Calif.; one daughter, Angel Brawner of Dickinson, Texas; one
sister, La Vance Montoyne of Springfield; three grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one grandchild.

Mr. Chaplin was a retired railroad conductor having worked for the NYC
Railroad for 42 years and was a musician. He was a member of the
Musician's Union of Indianapolis, Ind., Rotary Club in Charleston,
Plainfield, Ind., Elk's Club, and had served 13 years as the vice general
chairman for the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.

Memorials may be made to the Gideon Living Bible Memorial Plan.
