WINDSOR - Irene W. Ferrell, 91, of Windsor, IL passed away Tuesday, (Nov. 13, 2001) at 12:00 noon at her residence in Windsor.
Mrs. Ferrell was born Sept. 29, 1910 in Windsor, IL the daughter of Harry Allen and Lucy Linvill Wallace.
She was a member of the Windsor Christian Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Eastern Star Lodge of Windsor and a former member of the American Quarter Horse Association. She raised her children and then taught in Windsor area schools for twenty-one and one half years.
She married Glenn I. Ferrell June 9, 1930 in Windsor and he passed away Dec. 1, 1991.
Surviving are a grandson, Lee Campbell and wife Stephanie of Windsor; great-grandsons, Gage Campbell and Mason Campbell; life long family friend, Frank Warren and wife Dorothy of Windsor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; sons, Arlie and Leo and her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday in Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home in Windsor. Rev. Richard Eident will officiate. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM Friday until service time. Burial will be in Windsor Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Playground Equipment Fund for the Windsor Grade School.
Geraldine Glasscock
GAYS - Geraldine M. "Jeri" Glasscock, 82, of Gays, died at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 14, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

Carl Johnson
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Carl L. Johnson, 94, of Charleston, Ill., formerly of Lansing, Ill., died at 5:36 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 13, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Roselawn Cemetery, with Pastor Robert Hackler officiating. No visitation is planned. The Caudill-King Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born Sept. 4, 1907, in Weir, Kansas, to Joseph and Martha Luke Johnson. He married Sophie M. Arlasky in 1934; she died on Oct. 26, 1996.
Survivors include a son-in-law, Fred Wolff of Charleston; two grandsons, Scott and Karl Wolff, both of Charleston; one granddaughter, Amy Galante of Stuart, Fla.; and six great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Carole Wolff in 1998; and several brothers and sisters.
Mr. Johnson had retired in 1972 as Yard and Transportation Superintendent for Wisconsin Steel Works in Chicago where he had worked for 47 years.
Robert Moore
MARTINSVILLE - Robert L. Moore, 89, of Martinsville, died at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday (Nov. 14, 2001) at Burnside Nursing Home, Marshall.
A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Martinsville. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Greenwell Funeral Home, Martinsville, at 8 p.m. Masonic rites will be conducted.
He was born Feb. 15, 1912, in Martinsville, the son of Joseph S. and Goldie Ward Moore. He married Mary Belle Bullard in 1932; she died in 1994.
Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Nan Friddle of Bondfield; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Moore was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Martinsville United Methodist Church, a more than 50-year member of the Farm Bureau and a more than 60-year member of the Clark Lodge 603 AF & AM. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Body of Danville, Ainad Shrine Temple, Clark County Shrine Club and one of the founding members of the Martinsville Agricultural Fair Board of Directors in 1945.
Memorials may be made to the Cancer Fund, Heart Fund or the Shriners Hospital.
WILLIE G. WRIGHT
CHARLESTON, IL - Willie G. Wright, age 98 of Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2001 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Services celebrating his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 17 (2001) with Reverend Bill Boaz officiating. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 5-7. Services and Visitation will be held at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston. Following the services, Interment will be in Kickapoo Cemetery, south of Charleston.
Willie was born May 19, 1903 in Wrightsville, Illinois the son of Samuel Nelson and Margaret Hannah (Nees) Wright. On March 5, 1934, he married Mary E. Balch in Charleston.
He is survived by Mary, his loving and caring wife of sixty-seven plus years; two sons, Bill Wright and his special friend Mary Rickelman of Mattoon, Illinois and Adrian Wright and his special friend Kate Campbell of Charleston; two daughters, Josephine Lee and her husband Bruce Sr. of Charleston and Jeanette Hornbeck and her husband Robert of Las Cruces, New Mexico; nineteen grandchildren, Bill Wright, Jr. and his wife Cora of Portage, Indiana; Mary Boyer and her husband Norman, Debbie Allen and her husband Bert and Tammy Quigley, all of Mattoon, Westley Wright and his wife Tina, Bruce Lee, Jr. and his wife Teresa, Tony Lee, Casey Hutchcraft, A.L. Wright, and Jan Scholes and her husband Greg, all of Charleston; Nancy Gire and her husband Jimmy of Tuscola, Illinois, Melissa Voreis and her husband Bob and Ronald Hornbeck and his wife Corrine, all of South Bend, Indiana, Julie Yarnell and her husband Bill of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Brent Wright and his wife Jennifer of Spring, Texas, Marc Hutchcraft and his wife Winnie of Kansas City, Kansas, Corey Hutchcraft and his wife Shanna of Gonzales, Louisiana, Sherry Kay Smith of Springfield, Illinois and Necole Leigh Wright of Tulsa, Oklahoma; thirty-five great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents; two brothers, Lewis Wright and Sam Wright; and six sisters, Dessie Finch, Sadie Steele, Ethel Hodge, Belle Campbell, Mary Wright and Gracie Wright.
Willie's life was lengthy and rewarding and his life's greatest rewards were those of his lovely wife Mary, his four children, fifty-nine grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; all of whom he was tremendously proud and all whom he dearly loved.
He was a member of Eagles Ambraw Aerie #3100 of Charleston, Charleston Moose Lodge #1388 and CASS (Catfish Anglers Social Society of which he was a Charter Member of the Illinois Group). He enjoyed fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting, and raising hunting dogs. His passion for the out-of-doors gained him a wealth of information relating to nature, flowers, birds and animals and he shared generously that knowledge with his family. Prior to his retirement, he worked in the carpentry and concrete industry, sometimes self employed, other times with companies, and he recalls having been involved in the construction of South Fourth Street along with several other projects in the Charleston Area that took place during the twentieth century.

JAMES "JOE" FERGUSON
Joe Ferguson, age 39, of Washington, D.C., was on American Airlines Flight #77 which hit the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, and died while traveling on a National Geographic-sponsored educational field trip to the Channel Islands.
Memorial services celebrating his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 16, 2001, at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Robert C. Clark officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Ferguson was a 14-year veteran of the National Geographic Society, where he most recently served as Director of Geography Education Outreach. He joined the National Geographic's fledgling Geography Education Program in 1989. Through his passion and dedication, Mr. Ferguson had become a creative leader of the Society team charged with enhancing the teaching and learning of geography in American classrooms. The thousands of teachers and students he worked with loved him for it.
Mr. Ferguson was one of the principal architects that designed the infrastructure of geography education, which resulted in the improvement of geography education throughout the United States. He personally directed more than 25 educational workshops, which trained 1,700 teachers, who in turn influenced some 150,000 teachers in this country alone.
As an example, this summer Joe worked with the JASON Foundation to establish a relationship between science and social studies teachers. In addition, he orchestrated a multi-year program to prepare teachers for educating students for the upcoming Lewis and Clark Bicentennial observance.
Born in Canton, Mississippi, in 1962, Mr. Ferguson later moved to Washington, D.C., arriving at National Geographic on temporary assignment as an intern in 1987. He was then hired as a researcher in the Educational Media department. Two years later, he transferred to the Geography Education Program.
Mr. Ferguson held a bachelor's degree in geography from the University of Southern Mississippi. He was working toward a master's in geography first at Southwest University in San Marcus, Texas before transferring to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, when he started at National Geographic. He was a Board Member of GENIP (Geography Education National Implementation Project) and a member of the National Council for Geography Education, the National Council for Social Studies, and the National Middle School Association. He also served as a long-time math tutor and mentor for students in his neighborhood middle school. He was an active member of the Unity Church of Washington, D.C., on Capitol Hill.
Survivors include his mother, Barbara Harrell of Durant, Miss.; his grandfather, Bob Noyes of Durant, Miss, formerly of Mattoon; his brother, Randy Ferguson of Pearl, Mississippi; and his dog, Winston, of Washington, D.C.

LILLIAN GOHRING
Lillian Jane Gohring, age 82, of Mattoon, passed away at 12:57 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2001, at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home.
Funeral services celebrating her life will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Schilling Funeral Home with the Reverend Ron Dickinson officiating. Burial will follow in the Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held from Noon until service time on Friday afternoon at the funeral home.
Lillian was born October 19, 1919, in Kankakee, a daughter of Henry G. and Helen Brazier Baird. She married Donald C. Smith in 1940. She married William A. "Herman" Gohring on January 16, 1960 in Chicago. He passed away on April 22, 1978. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Ray Baird.
Survivors include one daughter, Paula Zinschlag and husband Ed of Mattoon; one son, Thomas Lee Smith of Shreveport, Louisiana; one stepson, W. J. Gohring of Galesburg, Indiana; seven grandchildren, including Derek Smith of Shreveport, Louisiana, Kari (Zinschlag) Wofford of St. Louis, Missouri, Gretchen Zinschlag of Tempe, Arizona, Kristina Zinschlag of Mattoon; and one great-granddaughter, Tiffany A. Wofford.
Mrs. Gohring graduated from Kankakee High School with the Class of 1938. She was employed with Kroehler Furniture in Kankakee and Brunswick Corporation in Chicago, from which she retired in 1976. She was baptized a member of the First Methodist Church in Kankakee was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mattoon, the Rebecca Circle at the Church, Women of the Moose in Kankakee and Mattoon where she served as Senior Regent in Mattoon, Elks Auxiliary, Toastmasters, and American Business Women's Association.

Carolyn E. Wallace
STRASBURG - Carolyn E. Wallace, 80, of Strasburg, died at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2001 in her residence.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Strasburg with Rev. Gary Fortkamp officiating. Visitation from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home, Strasburg. Burial will be in Windsor Cemetery, Windsor. Memorials may be given to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Donor's Choice.
Mrs. Wallace was born on December 1, 1920 in rural Strasburg, the daughter of William and Caroline Diepholz Lenz. She worked in the local grocery stores in Strasburg for many years and recently retired from the Wal-Mart in Effingham where she was a greeter. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Strasburg. She married Clyde "Jim" Wallace on October 22, 1940. He died on December 22, 1960.
Surviving are her son, Donnie Wallace and wife Pat of Strasburg; daughters, Carole Miller of Dwight, Nancy Hill and husband Tim of Collinsville, Maxine Winter and husband Curt of Stewardson and Janet Wallace and friend Dennis Elson of Caseyville; 12 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, John William Wallace; two brothers, Erwin Lenz and Martin Lenz; one grandson, Michael William Latch; and two son-in-laws, Roger Hill and Jerry Miller.
Dale Atkins
CASEY - Dale Atkins, 91, of Casey, died at 9:25 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 10, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Mattoon.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Greenwell Funeral Home, Martinsville, with the Rev. George Nika officiating. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
He was born March 14, 1910, in Clark County, the son of Jesse and Lillian Barr Atkins. He married Evelyn Sharp in 1937; she died in 1991.
Surviving are two sons, Bernie Atkins of Casey and Tom Atkins of Kirkland, Wash.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one sister.
Mr. Atkins had retired from Marathon Oil Co. He attended the Moriah Church of God, the Martinsville Bible Church and Calvary Baptist Church in Findlay, Ohio. He was a member of Clark Lodge 603 AF and AM.
Memorials may be made to the Martinsville Bible Church.
Patricia Elder
SULLIVAN - Patricia Kay (Katie) Elder, 45, of Sullivan, died at 11:31 p.m. Friday (Nov. 9, 2001) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home.
She was born March 10, 1956, in Sullivan, the daughter of George Dale and Evelyn Carnine Elder.
Surviving are her mother of Sullivan and three brothers, Gerald C. Elder of Shelbyville, Thomas W. Elder of Sullivan and Les Elder of Milton, N.H.
She was preceded in death by her father and one brother.
Ms. Elder was a CNA and attended the First Christian Church in Sullivan. She was a member of the Ladies American Legion Auxiliary Post 68 of Sullivan.
