James Wilson Schardan, 85, of Waterloo, died March 16, 2008, in Waterloo. He was born Oct. 6, 1922, in St. Louis, the son of the late John H. and Rose Schardan nee Schumacher. He was married to the late Stella Schardan nee Hekel. Mr. Schardan is survived by his daughter Pattie (Gary) Heath of Millstadt; step-son Ronald (Ruth) Henkel of Monroe, N.C.; step-daughter Betty (George) Banjak of Ashville, N.C.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; special friend Mary Aulbach of Arnold, Mo.; brothers Ronald (Danielle) Schardan of Hillsboro, Mo., and Henry “Babe” Schardan of Waterloo; along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Mr. Schardan was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg. He was a retired machinist for Laclede Gas in St. Louis and was a member of Gas Workers Local 11 in St. Louis. He was an avid golfer, with two holes in one to his credit. Visitation and a funeral service were at Lawlor Funeral Home, Pastor Joe LoRusso officiating. He is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or Canterbury Manor Nursing Center in Waterloo.

Nelda C. Allscheid nee Nottmeier, 95, of Waterloo, died March 16, 2008, in Waterloo. She was born May 24, 1912, in Fults, the daughter of the late Fred and Catherine Nottmeier nee Nagel. She was married to the late Albert J. Allscheid. Mrs. Allscheid is survived by her children Jeanette Lentz of Wentzville, Virlyn (Janie) Allscheid of Waterloo, Melvin Allscheid of Waterloo, and Yvonne (Richard) Lammert of Waterloo; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; along with sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter Darlene James; grandchildren Ted A. Lammert, Randy Lentz and Robin Krebel; great-grandchild Levi Voss; and 11 brothers and sisters. Mrs. Allscheid was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in St. Joe. She was also a member of Waterloo Senior Citizens and was a former member of the Ladies Guild at Zoar United Church of Christ in New Hanover. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service was at Zion United Church of Christ, Pastor Nancy Spier-Lee officiating. She is buried at Kolmer Memorial Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be made to Zion United Church of Christ in St. Joe.

Jesse G. “Jack” Williams, 83, of Waterloo, died March 16, 2008, in Ste. Genevieve, Mo. He was born May 3, 1924, in Trezevant, Tenn., the son of the late Daniel C. and Lessie Mae Williams nee Arnold. He was married to the late Mattie Sue Williams nee Moore. Mr. Williams is survived by his children Eulah Mae Williams of Dupo, Barty (Bonnie) Williams of St. Mary, Mo., Jesse Glenn (Sherry) Williams of Millstadt, and Penny Sue (Thomas) Dietz of Red Bud; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; brother Gayle (Kathy) Williams of Bertrand, Mo.; sister Faye Crum of East Prairie, Mo.; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, grandson Barty Williams Jr., two brothers and two sisters. Mr. Williams was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a former member of the Monroe County Farmers Market Association. Visitation and a funeral service were at Quernheim Funeral Home, Pastor Darrell Jones officiating. He is buried at Waterloo Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.

Dorothy M. Schreder nee Fults, of Valmeyer, died March 17, 2008, in Waterloo. She was born March 15, 1925, in Fults, the daughter of the late Henry J. and Marie D. Fults nee Schoen. She was married to the late Edgar J. Schreder. Mrs. Schreder is survived by her children Terry (Judy) Schreder of Waterloo, Edgar J. (Myrna) Schreder of Waterloo, Dorothy (David) Marquardt of Olney, Dennis (Jody) Schreder of Valmeyer, Gary (Susie) Schreder of Valmeyer, Christopher (Michelle) Schreder of Waterloo, and Hope (Richard) Wienhoff of Millstadt; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Brenda Schreder of Waterloo; sister Berry Ramer of Waterloo; along with sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Eugene J. Schreder, grandson Brian J. Schreder and sister Ruth Jarvis. Mrs. Schreder was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Valmeyer and St. Mary’s Mary & Martha Society. She was also a member of the Waterloo VFW Auxiliary. Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was at SS. Peter and Paul Church, Msgr. Thomas Flach and Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. She is buried at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery in Madonnaville. Memorials may be made in the form of Masses.

Marlene A. Mason nee Haas, 72, of Cahokia, died March 28, 2008, in St. Louis. She was born July 25, 1935, in St. Louis County, the daughter of the late Martin and Leona Haas nee Culp. She was married to Carol Mason of Cahokia. Mrs. Mason is survived by her husband; daughters Rhonda Kay (Rick) Gray of Dupo, Dawn Mason of St. Louis, and Lisa (John) Link of Waterloo; grandchildren Jason Gray, Jeremy Gray and Payton Link; sister-in-law Judy Haas-Broers of Wellsville, Kan.; nephews Brett Haas, Shane Haas and Ty Haas; along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Merle Haas. Mrs. Mason was a member of First Congregational Church in Dupo. She worked as an administrative assistant at St. Mary’s Hospital in East St. Louis. Visitation and a funeral service were at Dashner-Leesman Funeral Home in Dupo, Rev. Robert Lee officiating. He is buried at Lakeview Gardens of Memory in Fairview Heights. Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or the American Cancer Society.

Leo G. Henke, 94, of Columbia, died March 19, 2008, in Belleville. He was born Nov. 29, 1913, in Waterloo, the son of the late Fred D. and Caroline Henke nee Stemler. He was married to the late Vera W. Henke nee Osterhage. Mr. Henke is survived by his children Curtis J. (Mary Ann) Henke of Valmeyer, and Audrey (Gary L.) Loos of Columbia grandchildren Kevin J. (Dawn) Henke, Gary Alan (Pam) Loos, and Mark K. (Wendy) Henke; great-grandchildren Quinn Henke, Adam Henke, Evan Loos, Cory Loos, Michaela Loos and Aryn Henke; along with nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, granddaughter, brothers Ted Henke and Emil Henke, and sister Alice Coats. Mr. Henke was past president and member of Zoar United Church of Christ in New Hanover, and was past president and present member of Zoar Church Fellowship. He was a member of Baum’s Cemetery Restoration and past board member and current member of Monroe County Farm Bureau. He was past member of the board of directors and past treasurer of Monroe Service Co., past member and past president of Waterloo Optimist Club, past member of IOOF Lodge in Waterloo, past member of the historical society and Footnotes Quartet, past member of Zoar Church Octet and Turners Society of Columbia, past member of Columbia Sportsman’s Club, past member of Monroe County Fair Association, and was a graduate of Baum’s Academy and School of “Hard Knocks.” Visitation was at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service was at Zoar United Church of Christ in New Hanover, Rev. Dwayne Dollgener officiating. He is buried at New Hanover Cemetery of Zoar in Columbia. Memorials may be made to New Hanover Cemetery of Zoar.

Beulah G. Valentine nee Valleroy, 88, of Valmeyer, died March 20, 2008, in Waterloo. She was born Jan. 17, 1820, in Modoc, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Louise Valleroy nee Wills. She was married to the late Welton L. Valentine. Mrs. Valentine is survived by her children Michael (Pamela) Valentine of Creve Coeur, Mo., Jeanne Mueller, and Anthony (Luzviminda) Valentine of Valmeyer; grandchildren Jeffrey (Dana) Mueller, Nicole Mueller and Heidi Valentine; nieces Viola Peters, Judy Hitzmann, Karen Buettner and Margaret Pierce. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and granddaughter Amy Valentine Buckner. Mrs. Valentine was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Valmeyer and the Altar Sodality. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 901 in Valmeyer. Visitation is Monday, March 24, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral service will be Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. at the funeral home, Pastor Matt Friz officiating. She will be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Monroe County.

William “Sonny” Stafford Jr., 80, of Valmeyer, died March 21, 2008 in Valmeyer. He was born March 27, 1927, in St. Louis, the son of the late William Sr. and Ethel Stafford nee Dearman. He was married to Vinia Stafford nee Losh. Mr. Stafford is survived by his wife; children William (Becky) Stafford III of Waterloo, Allen (Shirley) Stafford of Valmeyer, Marie (Ed) Schultheis of Valmeyer, David (Janet) Stafford of Fults, and James (Amy) Stafford of Hooker, Okla.; sister Willene Hennemann; and brothers Dale Stafford and Donald (Louisa) Stafford. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Stafford was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the VFW in Arnold, Mo; American Legion in Prairie du Rocher, and a former member of Waterloo Masonic Lodge. A graveside service was held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.

Dolores “Dolly” Buehler, 77, of Red Bud, died March 23, 2008, in St. Louis. She was born Feb. 17, 1931, in Prairie du Rocher, the daughter of the late Aaron and Isabelle Bievenue nee Vogt. She was married to the late Ivo “Red” Buehler; he preceded her in death in 1999. Mrs. Buehler is survived by her children Van (Marianne) Buehler, Antioch Buehler, Glen “Bugs” Buehler, Gail (Rich) Stefani, Iva (Jay) Krebel, and Lynn (Tom) Hubert, all of Red Bud; grandchildren Tammi Heizer, Terri Imming, Toby Stefani, Lenny Stefani, Wendy Klein, Erik Krebel, Sara Howell and Kale Hubert, Tara Hubert and Tyler Hubert; and great-grandchildren Seth Heizer, Ian Heizer, Pierce Heizer, Lacy Imming, Ronica Imming, Brendan Stefani, Mackenzie Stefani, Caleb Stefani, Kiersten Klein and Braeden Klein; and sister Ruth Menard of Ruma. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son Leon Buehler. Mrs. Buehler was a homemaker. Visitation was at Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. A funeral was at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Red Bud, Fr. Tom Stout officiating. She is buried at the church’s cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Alyda Eckert nee Wolfmeier, 92, of Columbia, died March 23, 2008. She was born Jan. 7, 1916, in Monroe County, the daughter of the late William and Wilhelmina Wolfmeier nee Otten. She was married to the late John J. Eckert; he preceded her in death in 2002. Mrs. Eckert is survived by her daughter Mareda Eckert of Kirkwood, Mo.; grandchild, Ulya Eckert of Kirkwood, Mo.; along with other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Elmer Wolfmeier. Mrs. Eckert was a member of Christ Community Lutheran Church in Columbia. Visitation and a funeral service were at Lawlor Funeral Home, Pastor William Groennert officiating. She is buried at St. Paul Evangelical Church Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to United Charity Network.
