Luana Steffenauer, nee Ostendorf, 68, of Waterloo and Columbia, died Sept. 19, 2010 in Waterloo. She was born Aug. 11, 1942 in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Elroy and Myrtle (nee Maurer) Ostendorf. Mrs. Steffenauer is survived by her children, Bret (Toni) Steffenauer, Traci (Maurice) Brown and Cristi (Carl) Bierman; grandchildren Joli and Kami, Arianna and Annie and Nicholas and Taylor; and siblings Fronda (Allen) Nobbe, Tom Ostendorf and Karla Albert. Luana worked for many years as a legal secretary for the Glennon Rau Law Office and was also a Columbia School Board secretary, She enjoyed reading, gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Visitation is Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Quernheim Funeral Home. A funeral will immediately follow at 7 p.m. with Pastor Matt Friz officiating. Memorials may be made to the Metro Dance Company.

Alice J. “Tubby” Crame, nee Halterman, 82, died Sept. 19, 2010 surrounded by her family. She was born Jan. 16, 1928 in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Thomas and Ellen (Hopkins) Halterman. Mrs. Crame married Ferdinand “Bud” Crame 64 years ago, on Sept. 28, 1946. She lived in Belleville for more than 50 years before moving to Waterloo to be closer to her family. She had obtained an accounting education, worked as an accounts payable supervisor and retired from Emerson Electric in St. Louis, Mo. after 33 years of Employment. During her retirement, Tubby enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing and traveling to Tunica with retirees from Monsanto, where Bud worked. She also made costumes, dresses, and outfits for her grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Crame is survived by her daughter, Susan (Bruce) Doyle of Columbia; son, Leonard (MaDonna) Crame of Naples, Fla.; grandchildren Alicia (Patrick) Oglesby of Columbia, Bradley Doyle of Waterloo, Steven (Renee) Doyle of Columbia and Kirsten and Kristel Crame of Naples, Fla.; and great-granddaughters Caylie, Taylor and Peyton Oglesby of Columbia. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary M. Mutchek; brother, Thomas D. Halterman; sister-in-law, Helen Crame; and a nephew, Joseph Crame Jr. Visitation is Friday, Sept. 24, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral is Saturday, Sept. 25, at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia with Fr. Carl Scherrer officiating. Mrs. Crame will be buried at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern.

Janice T. Jones, nee Mori, 69, of Joliet, died Sept. 22, 2010 in Joliet. She was born Jan. 14, 1941 in Kapaa, Hawaii, the daughter of the late Clarence and Jane Mori. Mrs. Jones is survived by Steven (Meg) Dougherty, Pamela (Robert) Chimmy, Ryan Dougherty (Elizabeth Carrington), Lexis Dougherty, Tyros (Mary) Mori and Suzanna (Joseph) Robinson; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Dougherty. Visitation is Monday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at DeFabio Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow. Mrs. Jones will be buried at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Waterloo.

Mark Richard Graves, 48, of Waterloo, died Sept. 22, 2010 in Waterloo. He was born Jan. 10, 1962 in Red Bud, the son of John Graves and Carol (Steve) Kipping. In addition to his parents, Mr. Graves is survived by his daughter, Gretchen Marie (Ian) Graves; step-mother, Pearl Graves; and siblings John Graves, Rhonda Carter, David Graves, Cindy O’Brien, Julie Brigance, Rejona Knobloch, Dawn Stapleton, William Graves, Elizabeth Graves, Kim Roland, Stephanie Muertz, Scott Kipping and Darla Stumpf; along with aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Mr. Graves was veteran of the United States Army. Visitation is Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 9 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. A memorial service will follow at 10 a.m., with Pastor Tony Troup officiating. Funeral arrangements were handled by Quernheim Funeral Home. Mr. Graves will be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Johnathon Freeman, 26, of Fairview Heights, died Sept. 23, 2010 at his residence. He was born June 9, 1984 in Dyersburg, Tenn. Mr. Freeman his survived by his father, David Cravins of Red Bud; his mother, Angela (Billy) Lettimer of Dyersburg, Tenn.; a brother, Christopher Freeman of Red Bud; and grandparents, Ron and Patsy Roberts of Fairview Heights. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Wayne Petty. Mr. Freeman was veteran of the U.S. Army, serving two tours in the Iraq War. He was a student who enjoyed computer networking. Visitation is Sunday, Sept. 26, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Welge-Pechacek Funeral Home in Red Bud. Funeral is Monday, Sept. 27, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Freeman will be buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo.

Arline Bertha Emma Boehm, nee Vollmer, 88 of Smithton, died Sept. 23, 2010 at Oak Hill in Waterloo. She was born Sept. 12, 1922 in Marissa, the daughter of the late Henry and Emma (nee Sinn) Vollmer. Mrs. Boehm is survived by her son, Ed (Bev) Boehm of Avon Park, Fla.; her daughter, Nancy Witthoeft of Dallas, Tex.; grandchildren Kevin (Amy)Boehm, Keith (Lori) Boehm, Andrew Boehm and Alan Witthoeft; great-grandchildren Logan, Garrett, Jessica and Justin Boehm; a brother, Albert Vollmer of Millstadt; sister, Judith Jacobs of St. Louis, Mo.; and aunts Viola Sinn of Columbia and Irene Hoff of St. Louis, Mo. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin F. Boehm; and her sister, Shirley I. Eckert. Arline was a homemaker who lived in Mill for most of her life. She was a member of the Ladies Aid at Trinity Lutheran Church in Millstadt, IL., the Millstadt American Legion Post 502 and the Millstadt VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Visitation is Monday, Sept. 27, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt. A graveside services will be Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Marissa City Cemetery with Rev. Michael Kumm officiating. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Millstadt.

Clifford W. Haberl, 86, of Columbia, died Aug. 1, 2010 at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo. He was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Columbia, the son of the late Frank and Irene (Dollar) Haberl. He married Florence (Metter) Haberl in 1946 in Columbia. In addition to his wife, Mr. Haberl is survived by his son, Eugene (Jackie) Haberl of Columbia; a grandson, Jeffrey (Emily) Haberl of O'Fallon; great-grandchildren William and Grace Haberl; and sisters-in-law Merle Haberl and Dorothy Haberl of Columbia, both of Columbia. He was preceded in death by a brothers Vernon "Buzz" Haberl and Howard "Tiny" Haberl; and a sister, Marcella "Soupie" Crowder. Cliff served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany. He was a prisoner of war for seven months and was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Mr. Haberl was a 65-year member of Columbia American Legion Post 581. Upon his return from military service, he operated Clifford W. Haberl Plumbing and Heating Co. for 32 years. Cliff attended St. Paul UCC of Columbia, was the last active charter member of the Columbia Lions Club, was a Life Member of the Great South Western Illinois Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors, served on the Board of Directors at Magna Bank in Columbia and was a member of the Columbia Senior Citizens. Visitation is Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Lawlor Funeral Home. Funeral is Wednesday Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul UCC in Columbia with Pastor Bob Goddard, officiating. Mr. Haberl will be buried at the Evangelical St. Paul Cemetery in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Columbia American Legion Trust Fund or his church’s elevator fund.

Frances Irene Dowland, nee Wardle, 96, of Waterloo, died Aug. 3, 2010 in Belleville. She was born Sept. 7, 1913, in Pierre, SD., the daughter of the late Oswald Arthur and Ruth Adelia (nee Megenson) Wardle. Mrs. Dowland is survived by her daughter, Karen Tolan; grandson, Scott (Cheryl) Tolan; and great-grandchildren Megan and Lauren Tolan; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Michael J. Tolan; a brother, Cyril Donald Wardle; and a sister, Velma McClintock. Mrs. Dowland graduated from Jacksonville High School and retired from Thrifty Drug. She was a member of First Christian Church in Alton, the VFW Auxiliary and Eastern Star Rebekah Lodge. Mrs. Dowland resided five years at the Garden Place in Millstadt. According to her wishes, there were no services and a private family gathering will be held at a later date.

Ruth A. Dailey, nee Walker, 67, of Red Bud, died August 4, 2010 in Red Bud. She was born February 3, 1943, in East St. Louis, the daughter of the late Herbert Waldo and Dorothy Margaret (nee Davis) Walker. Mrs. Dailey is survived by her children, Rita Kennedy, Robyn (Jim) Hurley, Daniel Dailey (Debra Schell) and Melissa Dailey; grandchildren Johnny (Jennifer) Kennedy Jr., Steven Kennedy, Becky Kennedy, Craig and Corey Hurley and Danielle and Racquel Dailey; three great-grandchildren and one on the way; siblings Jimmy (Cheryl ) Walker, Tom (Karen) Walker, Johnny (Tammy) Walker, Rita (Dan) Walker, Diane Siebert and Barb Hoock; and special friend, William Schaller; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband; Bobby Leroy Dailey. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements were handled by Quernheim Funeral Home.

Joseph Barry Courtney, 75, of Red Bud, died Aug. 5, 2010 at the Red Bud Nursing Home. Mr. Courtney was born Oct. 16, 1934, the son of the late Foster and Mary (Schutzenhofer) Courtney. He is survived by his wife, Kay (Kocher) Courtney; children Jill Cason (George Hick), Mary Kay (Steven) Harrison and Kristen (Joel) Schutt; grandchildren Craig and Alex Hick, Jeff and Spencer Harrison and Ty and Courtney Schutt; a sister, Mary Ann (William) Ross; and a brother, James G. (Julie) Courtney; along with nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by an infant son, John Courtney. Joseph was an ironworker in Local 392 for 40 years and a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association. He was very close to his fellow ironworkers and was his happiest while horseback riding, including participating in rodeos and horse shows. Visitation is Sunday, Aug. 8, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Koch-Liefer Funeral Home in Red Bud. Funeral is Monday, Aug. 9, at 9 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church in Red Bud with Msgr. Dennis Schaefer officiating. Mr. Courtney will be buried at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund or Gibault Catholic High School.
